While Foreigners cannot legally own land in Thailand, there are ways for a foreigner to secure land via a 30 lease, lifetime Usufruct or put land in a company name. Many foreigners enjoy owning a house while leasing the land land here in Thailand. Hi Joe ,Gift, i bought the land here in the mountain of Chiang Mai way back in 97 built the house,got married in 2000 ,never looked back still together after all these years and im'e coming on to 71 so where i will end my days. Good Luck you guys.

We moved from Bangkok to near Chiang Rai for the same reasons as you Joe! We purchased 9.6 Rai of farmland about 39 km NE of the city. We filled three Rai with 1.25m of dirt and dug to large ponds on one Rai behind the house. Enjoying the cooler weather and nice breezes.

This will be interesting to follow, as my wife and I did the same thing, but we did it all long distance. Having a house built in Thailand while we are in America was challenging, but with the help of a good friend we got it done. We were there when it got finished in Dec 2019 to handle the paper work, then the "situation" hit right after that so we couldn't get back earlier but now looking forward to starting my retirement there this year. The house is in my wife's name but my name is on it too so I'm protected but I trust my wife 100 percent so shouldn't matter.

For the last 30 yrs I've been a home inspector and insurance adjuster. So I know a TON about the mistakes and failures people make in construction.
