    I love my BHP. It's a 40 S&W version and has been extensively modified. I have the BH Spring Solutions SFS System, the BH Spring Solutions spring optimization kit, BHS Recoil Buffering System and I removed the magazine disconnect. This is a very shootable and accurate pistol. The BHP is a very fine pistol straight out of the box, but now it's perfect for me.

    I have two Browning HP’s in 40 S&W...I think it is a great combination. I have Novak carry night sights installed, the mag disconnect hazard device removed, and the hammer bobbed to eliminate bite - very similar to your setup. I love them.

    Not all of us have the luxury of choosing which caliber we carry. I have carried a .40 S&W for over 20 years due to someone else's decision. Since my mind was made up for me, I carry it, practice with it, know it's benefits and limitations and carry it with confidence. Would I feel just as confident with a 9mm? Sure I would. Given the choice after so many years, I will shoot and carry a .40 S&W.

    It is about as concealable as a 1911, which I carry every day, so, I'd say, "Yes."

    Saying that the Hi power was the final vision of where the 1911 was going to be is spot on.
    If the Hi Power had been adopted by the US instead of mostly Europe. You'd have your Hi Power in .45 ACP.
    But Im happy with .40 S&W anyway. Cheers.

    I have this gun in .40, I love the feel and the weight of it. The one criticism I'd give it is that it is a very snappy recoil. There's a reason this design was first chambered in 9mm. When I went to the range, I shot my Sig Sauer p226 9mm, my Mil-spec, Rock Island Armory 1911 and my Hi power in .40 cal. The least accurate one I shot was the browning, my most accurate was the 1911. I shot over 100 rounds down range with each pistol. I found that the recoil of the hi power was more snappy and harder to rebound from than the 1911, which to me was surprising. Can't beat 1911s for me.

    Great review, i just ordered a BHP standard in 9mm. I think this gun would see a big jump in sales if they chambered it for 45 like you said, that would really be the successor to the 1911. Too many guys just dont like the 40 because its snappier and its the "middle child" of common auto calibers. I wonder how much longer this gun will be in production; I think it will eventually go the way of the Colt Python given its high price.

    People asking about this gun for lefties. Well the mk III onwards comes with ambi safety. You don't need a slide release, just pull back on the slide and release it. Re the mag release, just use the tip of your lefty trigger finger. There's a theory that J M Browning was a lefty. Designed the gun this way at prototype level, for himself., and thinking it safer, as when you change mags your finger is away from the trigger by default. Cos you are using it to pop the mag out. Lefty's are fine !!

    Now that there is a .40 S&W Hi-Power offering, does anyone make a drop-in barrel chambered in .357 sig to complement the beefier slide? Furthermore, I think a designated magazine would be needed, as I have been told that they are not reliably interchangeable, as people have discovered in barrel switching Glocks.

    Don't trash the 9mm. lol Back when I was a paramedic, the bulk of handgun shooting calls I went on was with 9mm and down. I seen some 40sw, never saw the elusive 10mm shotting. I think a lot of that has to do with popularity, which is drastically effected with price. More people that commit crimes like that, are pushed economically into the smaller and less expensive stuff. I cast and shoot a lot of 9mm, which is cheap and will stop someone, especially if you fire enough rounds. lol

    To Duelist1954. Re 9mm. You're a big guy. What say you wander down range about 30 yards and i'll put one or two hollow points in your chest eh? It's such a feeble round, you'll hardly feel it, surely? There's plenty of dead men been hit by 9mm. Prob more than .45ACP actually...

    • @duelist1954
      @duelist1954  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Andrew, I don't want to get shot with a .22 LR either, but that doesn't mean that it would be my first choice as a carry gun. I own and shoot a bunch of 9mm handguns, and there are a couple of compact one's that I carry if I can't conceal a bigger gun. I agree that there are probably more dead men with 9mm lead in them than there are with .45 ACP. The question that matters more to me than did they eventually die is, did the first hit end the confrontation? I shoot either caliber equally well, so, if I have a choice, I'm going with the bigger bullet.

      9mm is a dumbed down round in the US due to the plethora of garbage 9mm pistols on the market. If you want to have an informed conversation about the 9mm or comparing 2 different chamberings, then it's necessary to start talking about specific loads, as the duelist was. If you can't post bullet types, weight, and FPS, then you are not well enough informed to engage in such a topic. I'm not sure, but I suspect that if you two were at a range, or met on BLM land, you would not pose the question you posted. 9mm NATO spec (124gr@1299fps) is a very capable round, but it lacks power as it's only a 124 grain 35 caliber (.355 caliber nominal). This is why US marines are going back to 45, and every other service is now looking at .40S&W. The .45 was created as the US was going against drugged up Filipino fighters in the american-philippine war, and they wanted something more than a .38 long. It's not that the 9mm or 38 special won't kill, it's how fast it gets the job done. In a hand to hand or self defense situation, seconds count. The military already had the .38 since 1892, then they looked at a 9mm luger. Older officers started using their old .45 colt peacemakers, so the army introduced the M1909 .45 DA revolver. They knew they needed power, but they wanted more round capacity, and reliability. The M1911 was the only choice in early 1900's. Now I'm not a fan of the .45 or the 1911, but one must think that the US marines might know a thing or two about why they select certain calibers.

    • @ZFlyingVLover
      @ZFlyingVLover 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      rejracer If the logic is to have a round that also breaks bones then why not deploy the 10mm? At least that would be a gun that holds 15 rounds and the only thing stronger would be a 44 mag.
      The 9mm is a very controllable round. If you cannot be bothered with putting rounds where they need to go and just depend on wildly targeting in hopes of slowing down the attack by hitting a leg bone and breaking that bone then go with a 45. John browning didn't think the 9mm was dumbed down. And a 10mm is basically a slightly larger but much heavier 9mm round.
      Imho. Today. A military issued 45 MUST HOLD 12 rounds minimum. Twice the capacity of a revolver. Less reloads means less opportunities to be caught defenseless. The age of the 1911 has passed. Make the 45s hold minmum 12 rounds going forward.

  • @993isgawd
    @993isgawd 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    What you say about the power of .40S&W is true if you're only considering ball ammo as your carry load. With modern defensive loads the performance differences is not what it used to be. Bullet design in the defensive arena has made major advancements in the past decade or so, to the point that there's little gained anymore in upping the caliber to .40S&W or 45AUTO from 9mm. Arguably you could say that you're actually losing by going up in caliber because of number of rounds (and potential entry wounds) being sacrificed as a result.
    Unless you live out in a rural area it behooves the conscientious gun owner to load a good hollow point round in his or her carry weapon, what with the pitfall of zealot prosecutors and civil lawsuits that await if ball ammo is used. Through and throughs are generally not good things, unless you can get the zombies to align just right or you just one of those weird types who judges how well they do by the size of the exit wound. For every other circumstance, particularly in urban areas, you're taking a big risk when it comes to collateral damage. This was true then in 2011 as it's true today.
    In case you're wondering, I EDC a Gen4 G23 and shoot .40S&W pretty well with this gun. I switched to it from 9mm several years ago because I too was lured by the potency of the round, and I figured that losing two rounds from my previous carry G19 isn't really that bad. But lately I've been considering going back to my G19 after seeing just how good modern JHPs like Federal HSTs are, particularly in +P loads. The possibility of making a couple of extra wound cavities if the need arises is not lost on me anymore, not with the increases in multiple bad guy home invasions and assaults.

    i like the hi power, but the 1911 is better imo,

    • @rejracer
      @rejracer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In terms of design the Hi-Power is superior in simplicity and reliability. The 1911 had some design flaws. For example the grip safety was added because there is a flaw in that if you dropped it, it could discharge. Browning addressed this design flaw in the Hi-power. The only reason the hi power was not released before his death is he was waiting on the 1911 patents he sold to colt to expire. Unfortunately he expired before the hi power was fully completed and his partners finished the magazine design (first double stack!) and released it. The only downside of a hi power is the magazine disconnect.
      In terms of power, the clear winner is the 1911
      so what's better? Magazine capacity or terminal ballistics? Both are very reliable, slight edge to the hi power, but slight. No mag disconnect on the 1911! I think it depends on application and the person shooting it.

    @douglasfulmer5483 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 9mm Hi Powers will be more durable, and easier to use than the 40 Smith and Wesson Hi Powers, simply because all 9mm handguns chambered in 40 Smith cannot take the pressures. Hence Berreta 96s, based of the renowned 92 design, blow up in your hand after about 5,000 rounds.
    Also, as previously stated, 9mm is not a weak round.

    • @jbrewster4577
      @jbrewster4577 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Douglas Fulmer The construction of the hi-power was enhanced to function with the .40 S&W, thus it will not cause durability issues. Furthermore the improvements are included in the new 9mm versions, which were having premature wear & failures from hot 124gr nato FMJ ammo.
      Durability problems with some guns chambered in .40 are due to lazy manufacturing & poor product development.

    • @douglasfulmer5483
      @douglasfulmer5483 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** A heavier hammer and slide spring doesn't make up for the fact that this gun shouldn't be chambered in an over pressure round.

    • @rejracer
      @rejracer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The .40 hi-power is an all new design of frame, slide and barrel. Nato spec ammo is +P which is what the 9mm hi power was designed for. Of course if you dumb either the 9mm or .40 down then it will show increased service life. If you use the proper 9mm ammo (+P) in the 9mm and the proper .40 ammo then the reliability of the 2 is the same. If you want to know the difference, get both in your hands at the same time and compare, the .40 has much more heft in the frame, slide and barrel.
      Edit: To be clear, we are discussing the factory .40 Hi-power, not a 9mm hi-power with an aftermarket .40 drop in barrel. The .40 drop in barrels in a 9mm frame are NOT safe imo and will show a much reduced service life.

      Really? Why is it unsafe...because the bullets will come flying out of your computer screen? Where else can you get the perspective of being shot at, but in a way where you are in no actual danger, besides my videos.

    It has ambidextrous safety. The mag release is on the left side as well as the slide lock. but I believe you can swap out the mag release to the opposite side.

    Love the video, but hey, I like all of your videos. Any chance a Jericho 941 (aka Baby Desert Eagle) might be in the works for a review? Thanks!
