I tried selling cars in my early twenties. I had just gotten out of the military and was trying to find my way. It was truly the hardest job I’ve ever had. I was at the dealership by 8am Monday-Saturday and rarely ever left before 10pm. We had a flat commission of $250 a car new or used didn’t matter. I was lucky to sell 2 cars a week. I was horrible and nearly starved. Only one salesman ever really got sales because he was the hometown salesman. Everyone knew him. He felt sorry for me and gave me some overflow at a split which saved me most weeks. Never again.

As a minor professional athlete during Covid when most sports teams weren’t playing I needed to do something to make money for my family. While training in the early morning I sold cars from 12-6 at a local dealership having no prior experience or knowledge in sales or the auto industry. I made $150,000 in 8 months and loved my co-workers. When COVID restrictions lifted and I went back to being a professional athlete the dealership kept me in a part time remote position and has continued to treat me like family. There are bad dealerships out there, but the blanket stigma about the job simply isn’t true. I’m blessed to have fallen on hard times and found some great people and great opportunities.

it's fascinating that what you're saying really tells us more about you than about the job. you're competitive, and you like your pay to match your work effort more than anything else. a lot of us are not like that.
for myself as an example: as long as my pay is enough to cover the bills and let me have fun, I don't care how much it is. what I need in work is to have fun and feel like I'm doing good things for others, and sales doesn't do that for me. I'd actively tell people not to buy stuff that won't actually improve their lives.
the effort I put into my work isn't determined by my pay, and it won't ever be. instead, I put effort in when I care about the place I work for.
i worked at a shop that didn't take care of me and didn't care about me, and actually getting work done was the hardest thing in the world because I just wanted to go home the whole day. where I am now, the shop takes care of me in a handful of ways, and I care about the people that I work with. I put extra effort in so that the people around me have less that they have to do. instead of wanting to be making more than everyone else, I put extra work in so that we all go home happy.

I have been in the Automotive sales industry for over 22 years. The lowest YTD was around $85,000. I have been in management for the past 15 years. When I first became a Manager I averaged around $125,000 a year. For the past few years the lowest YTD is around $200,000, this year i am on track to make $250,000. I have no college degree, dropped out of high school 12th grade. Ended up getting my GED! Honestly the automotive industry is fun and exciting.

It sounds corny to say, but I really believe sales is a life skill. I know some people think it's useless but hear me out. In almost everything you do there's a sales aspect. I gotta convince a girl to go out with me, she's obviously not going to say yes unless I can sell myself to her, to make me seem more appealing. I get pulled over, I convince the cop to not give me a ticket. And then there's the inverse, which is you as a consumer. Which we all buy things, but now you know how to respond to a sales pitch, either you're interested and want a better deal, or you're not and want them to go away. It's nice having the skills to deal with it. I agree with you Russ I work in sales and it's changed my life. I can walk into a room with people 10-20 years older than me and keep their attention. People take you seriously when you know how to sell yourself.

I work at a dealership as a detailer, I dont make much money but I do like cars. Ive been thinking of maybe doing car sales because I feel like Im good at customer service and interacting with people and because I like cars I feel like I can speak with confidence about it. But the last sales job I had was door to door and I absolutely hated every second of that job. It was purely commission and because I didnt sell anything in the week I was there I made nothing after working 12 hour days. I might have talked to over 300 different businesses and some did want to buy but due to various reasons they didnt want to close right then and there. My managers said they had confidence in me after training but I got bills to pay and responsibilities and so my time is limited. I would like to maybe try out car sales but I am worried if I might not be good enough at it and end up getting into debt to pay me bills.
What might be some good advice so I might think more about it
