@ I was just using a wheel bearing grease. Just try to not over fill it. And you could clean out the bearing with brake clean and dry it out good before adding the grease.
Not so! Did this a while back and quite as a, well, its still silent! Can you imagine if I had cleaned it out properly as well? I have done lots of these on cars I have owned, and they usually (But they could fail) run for years! Only had one that lasted maybe a year and I had to buy a new one.
some say swap the bearing. I have switched to amsoil synthetic water resistant grease. i'm finding snowmobile bearings that 1-2 seasons would kill em now are lasting forever. I pull seals every 2 years and repack, I dont even have to clean them anymore they are staying so nice. People laugh at me, but 4 sleds, 10-12 bearings each... you do the math! good qualtiy grease and no reason a bearing can't outlast that truck.
You are so right! This just works out if you have already torn stuff apart figuring out what is wrong, & now you can't drive to the parts store. (& as you saw, really, this costs nothing if you have a grease gun. It will probably outlast the car)
@@carltongossett2282 Just clean out the bearing with some brake clean and dry it out first before adding some grease. (Although they seem to just be happy with some grease, period)
These wheels are cheap, but if your chasing down a noise & come across this, the car is now disabled. But a quick little bit of grease, and your back on the road!

Just buy a new one instead. Worth it instead of doing a quick fix. But this isn’t too bad if you don’t have the money even though it isn’t an expensive part
@@khalilyounger519 True. Sometimes no one has them in stock, or you have everything apart and no second vehicle to be get a part. Most of the time, a quick clean up and a little dab of grease and this part will never be an issue again.
$25 here in Canada, and if you have already taken everything apart to diagnose it, a bit of grease will get you back on the road for the next 100,000 miles & if you want, you can go buy the part!
@@CoachFrank-m3x Yes, of course you can! If you think about it though, the bearing is sealed from both sides so almost impossible for dirt to get inside unless you introduce dirt when you disassemble it. But yes, it won’t hurt!
Yes. As I mentioned to another commenter, if someone at home had it apart to diagnose it, much quicker to do this, than put it all back together, driver to buy the part, get back home, tear it down again, & replace the wheel. If you already have the part, yes just replace it. (Although, it didn't cost even a penny of grease to fix it)
Or if you’re really good you could press the bearings out and press new ones in and have them run for even longer……if your not a total hack that’s looking to kill your vehicle with a catastrophic failure
These wheels are cheap. I bet they are usually under $20. As for killing yourself, most new vehicles this belt is just running the air conditioning and the alternator. Even f it does run the power steering, you can still control the vehicle if the belt breaks.
I swear if someone comes in asking for a grease service on idler bearings imma find you 😂😂
You could charge them for your time! Time is money. You probably would come out ahead! Thanks for watching.

But what type of the grease would you recommend for bearings?

@@unclemarksdiyauto Thanks for the reply!
I needed those tips about cleaning too! 🙏🙏
This is a great cost saving tip 😎
It saves a couple bucks per wheel, but hey, it’s recycling and it is cheap if you have some grease!
Right .. put the pulley back in to make noise in a week again.. once a bearing is bad it’s bad..

Why not clean and then grease it, people just rack up dirt and it wears out from the friction

Done lots of these. No reason why it should sling grease, as grease is sealed behind that dust cap.
