  • ✒The story of USS Liberty
    📍Bali, Tulamben
⚓The USS Liberty was build in 1918, in New Jersey. Measuring 125 meters.
⚓The Liberty served in the U.S. Navy during World War I as an animal-transport ship, moving cavalry horses to the front line in France.
⚓When the war ended, the ship was retaired, but returned to the military in 1940 as part of the U.S. Army defensive service.
⚓In 1942, a Japanese submarine torpedoed the ship, which was carrying cargo from Australia to the Philippines.
⚓The ship rapidly took on water, rendering attempts to tow it to port were unsuccessful. ⚓Eventually, the boat was beached on the shore at Tulamben so that intact cargo could be salvaged.
✒But this was not the end of the USS Liberty’s story.
⚓In 1963, the volcano Mount Agung erupted, and violent tremors sent the ship off the beach and into the ocean, where it finally came to rest just meters from shore.
🐟Since then, corals have grown all over the ship’s surfaces, creating a habitat for countless marine species, and the shipwreck became 1 of 10 best shipwrecks for scuba diving.
🐟On our dive, we were lucky to see all sorts of interesting animals. My favorites were garden eels; I had never seen them before, and they are truly fascinating creatures. They extend their bodies out of the sand to feed on things drifting in the water, resembling a mesmerizing dance💃.
We saw a couple of turtles, one feeding on corals growing on the remains of a shipwreck, and the other even swam into a part of the wreck, which really surprised me. I guess she had some secret snacks hidden there🤔. Many colorful fish added to the beauty, creating a striking contrast with the black volcanic sand.
