👶🏼 Is the Ketogenic Diet Safe in Pregnancy? (Very Important)

  • There's nothing more joyous than the birth of a beautifully healthy baby. Expectant mothers and women trying to get pregnant want more than anything to have that healthy, happy baby. Diet plays a big part in that outcome. Please share this video because so many don't know...
    The diets that a dietitian or doctor might recommend to such a woman would probably include lots of whole-grain, fruit and fruit juices. Problem is, there is no meaningful research showing that these diets are safe in pregnancy. So we are left searching the research and our human past to discover the best way of eating in pregnancy.
    There are certain nutrients that developing babies need. These nutrients are essential and the newborn will suffer if these are not included in mom's diet. Here is a quick video that goes into some detail about this very important topic.

      Well Doc, you and I disagree about "greens and or vegetables" that Did Not exist 2 1/2 Million years ago when Homo Sapiens were Obligate Carnivores. Why should there "suddenly" be a nutritional requirement for gestating mothers and their fetuses for excess SUGAR derived from plants? I would suggest that Gluconeogenesis would compensate for any needed Glucose for both the fetus and mother. Added Carbohydrates only cause excess Glucose and excess Insulin in the bloodstream. Both cause cardiovascular damage.

      @@KenDBerryMD I did keto during my last pregnancy and still had to deal with constipation and a few varicose veins - I'm guessing related to the fiber. Once I cut out the fiber post-partum, the constipation ceased immediately. I've been carnivore for over a year and plan to continue with the next pregnancy, but I will take some liver to make sure my folate is optimized.

    I'm in week 39 now and I've done keto the whole pregnancy. I can't speak for anyone else but I am absolutely sure keto has helped me have a very healthy pregnancy. No sleepless nights, no pelvic issues, no swelling in feet/hands, no mood swings.. The list can be made very long of things I have been safe from compared to "normal" diet preggy's. I can also admit that I did get some preggy issues when I cheated on sugar/carbs.
    During pregnancy my blood values has also been outstanding, esp blood sugar. I keep getting comments from friends and medical staff that my case seems to good to be true. To avoid confrontation I have chosen not to mention I'm doing keto. Instead I say I skip sugar and focus on good nutritious foods! I have yet to go through labour, so I can give the full keto-pregnancy review then!

      @MelanieAnneMusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @kamibess This is sooo cool! I would love love love to hear a follow up on how your labor went!
      I've been on Keto for 7 months (not pregnant) for diabetes and I've just about cured myself and got my numbers down to an almost non-diabetic range without any medication!!
      My husband and I have started the kid talk and I really want to stick to Keto and have been trying to find real stories of people who have done keto their whole pregnancy. If you don't mind sharing after you have your little baby I'd looooove to talk to you!! Hope you have a great delivery!!!

    • @Kamibess
      @Kamibess 5 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      Update!
      My baby is now four weeks old and we're still on keto! Labour was painful but normal, no complications. My baby is very healthy and everything is normal. After labour I've had a huge weight loss, approx 15 kg since labour (and I didn't gain any weight during pregnancy at all, I was already over weight so Keto kept my weight in check). I've also had a very very quick recovery in my body.
      I'm now breastfeeding. My milk supply is endless and almost too much, so no shortage here. My milk also seem to be more fatty and nutritious since my baby don't need to eat as many times or for as long as other infants, still she shoots up in weight and hight well above expected numbers. Also - she seem to be really early on a lot of cognitive and motor skills. All in all - keto for pregnancy and breastfeeding is not only recommended in my opinion, it's a complete life changer!
      Side note: my weight loss before pregnancy and after now total 27 kg since the start of my keto journey in February 2018. Could talk about this for hours cause my list of pros is very very long. Keto has completely changed my life.
      DM me if you wanna know more!

    I will pull from my own experience here folks. (Because I had my first 6 kids in 7 years). Yes, I know, it sounds insane, but we were told for some years that we would probably have to adopt. So we were ecstatic when all the plumbing issues were rectified and the babies started coming. I cooked exclusively from scratch. We all ate fatty meats including liver, lots of eggs, butter, whole milk, homemade full fat yogurt and buttermilk with homemade wholewheat breads, pancakes and cookies from freshly milled w.w. flour. It was all we knew. We lived in Idaho with abundant farms, dairies, beef cows, artisan cheeses, and raw milk delivered to our doorstep...FULL fatty foodstuffs for the taking. I only wished I had known about the benefits of coconut and avocado oils back then. Butter and olive oil was our favorite. We did eat potatoes often also. (but we lived in Idaho for heaven sakes). THE KIDS WERE BLESSED WITH KEEN MINDS AND HEALTHY BODIES.

      high fats are what is making me sick. I cant even stand to look nor smell eggs, nuts are giving me not only a stomach ache but horrible acid indigestion, I have been eating cheeses and cream cheese. Those two things I can eat. Most veggies make me sick as well except for starchy ones like sweet potatoes or red potatoes. I was able to eat a little bit of broccoli the other night and I can eat some green beans and spinach sometimes earlier in the day. I am having a ton of acid issues with veggies that I normally don't experience and that is making it very hard for me as well. I also dont think this is going to randomly subside. I only have 4 months left in my pregnancy and its been like this consistently for the past 5 months. I plan to go back low carb after I have the baby and my body gets back to normal, but I can not force myself to eat things that are making me feel sick, its awful.

I do not take anything for my diabetes because I was able to control my blood sugar when I cut sugars and carbs out and didn’t see why I would need to continue with the medication. I started taking vitamin B12 and was feeling so much better than when I was just told I needed metformin and that there was nothing I could do to get rid of type two diabetes.. In just three months of being on the diet my A1c went from a 6.7 to a 6.2. I fear with eating how my dietitian has told me to eat that my numbers are going to go back up. This diet was curing me. I was nervous about getting back on it in the middle of my pregnancy, since the dietitian said it could be unsafe.Thank you for this video, it really helps a lot with making my decision.

    My doctor who actually is Keto, wont let me be in ketosis as there is not enough evidence saying that it will help. But she did say that I can do keto but add fruits to make sure I am not in ketosis. So Keto diet with more fruit intake and up the veggies.

      Today's weightloss is 26.4 lbs since starting KWOE and I had the yummiest treat tonight. I thawed 8 large blackberries, sprinkled them with Truvia, then added 1/2 cup full fat Fage plain yogurt. It tasted so good after 7 weeks of keto basics. I know I'll be fine, will likely lose at tomorrow's weigh-in, because the snack was under 6 net carbs! Yay!!

    An important caveat to this is that if you fast too much OR if you are too thin, it can definitely mess up your cycle. I had two miscarriages on keto and IF, but two healthy pregnancies prior to changing my diet. I don’t know what I will do now but probably will stop keto for a little while and see if I have more success. I perhaps lost too much weight and my body was not signaling that it was safe to continue carrying the babies.

    So here’s something interesting: I went in for my 26wk prenatal appointment today. But here’s the backstory: before pregnancy I had gone to a carnivore lifestyle- then got pregnant and for the first trimester I couldn’t stand the taste of meat/cheese so I ate whatever I could keep down which sadly was mostly junk food.. I ended up gaining a ton of unnecessary weight at this time as was evident by the doctors scale and my generally crappy overall feeling. Finally at 24 weeks the food aversions subsided and I went back to strict carnivore. Fast forward to today, at 26wks I weighed in six pounds less. The doctor hadn’t mentioned weight before, but now asked if I was feeling nauseous or having a problem keeping food down. She noticed the weight decrease. I told her that actually I was feeling better now than I had all pregnancy and am finally able to eat a healthy diet. Lol! First carnivore pregnancy for me- and ready to finish strong. BTW- baby measured beautifully with a strong heartbeat! All good.

    I'm 7 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. With my first two I was sooooooo sick all the way through pregnancy (not hg, but still no joke), so I decided to try keto for this one. I'm not saying I'm not sick at all, but at least it is manageable now. I dropped keto for one day and felt it the next 24 hours, so I'm back to keto again. As a side note, I'm not eating any fruit either, because of the sugar. Morning sickness (haha, just the mornings, right? pfffff) can be so debilitating, so I'm doing anything I can to prevent it.

    I'm in my last month and mostly have focused on Paleo/Keto throughout my pregnancy. I've had no cravings aside from craving steak my first trimester which I most certainly indulged in. The times I did occasionally have some sugar or processed food, I felt horrible. I feel more satiated on a higher fat diet and my blood pressure and glucose levels are great and my thyroid levels have stayed consistent throughout my pregnancy. I was on this diet before I was pregnant and I have no doubt it helped us conceive; my best friend however consumes a lot of sugar, processed foods and carbs in general, they have been trying for the past year with no success. It's really appalling that they still push the standard diet for pregnant women - in pretty sure that's what leads to gestational diabetes and labor complications (despite what some nurses want to say to avoid hurt feelings, what you eat and your lifestyle does affect it). I'm so grateful for people like you and the functional doctor I worked with that helped changed my lifestyle and diet, it has helped my pregnancy be so smooth and I hope to maintain it with our baby as well so she starts with better nutrition than I did as a child 😊

  • @ipaycloseattention

    I think I need to disagree with you here, Dr. Berry. When I was pregnant with my now six-year-old, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I decided to go on keto for the remainder of the pregnancy. First, my fasting blood sugar stayed over 100 every morning and had to go on insulin. That made no sense to me until I found out keto raised my cortisol. Now, because of all that cortisol in my and my baby's bodies, she has a very bad temperment. Never happy. Cranky. Whiny. None of my other seven children are like this. So while I agree about the need for high fat in pregnancy (it promotes progesterone), I disagree with ketosis.

    Oh, and how about the combination of keto and IF (16:8 perhaps)? I'd love a video on that. There is little research nor evidence on this; on forums we can see women saying it worked for them or they started it because of gestational diabetes. I also read - without evidence - that IF during breastfeeding was detrimental because it reduces the quantity of fat in the mother's milk. Why could that be? isn't that why pregnant women store fat during pregnancy? Thanks for any insight!

    Dr Berry, I have a question please? I'm now almost 9 weeks pregnant & have not been keto since I found out. I'm having a food aversion to meat & mostly everything really as the thought of eating anything makes me nauseous. Allowing myself to be hungry also makes me nauseous. However, before the meat aversion, I really enjoyed eating liver & I'm anemic & I feel great when I consume it. I read somewhere that I should not consume it during pregnancy since it contains high levels of vitamin A & this vitamin can cause me to have a miscarriage. I'd like to try it, to see if I can stomach it, but I'm scared to as I don't want to change losing my baby. What is your advice on this please?

    I noticed folate wasn't mentioned which we know is needed to avoid neural tube defects at birth (exposed spines to open air). In addition why do we always say "oh this is what they did thousands of years ago" what was the birth mortality rate(death at birth) at back then? While I can agree to eat whole foods telling others to eat diets lacking in fiber and the like just doesn't sound like good medical advice on a nutritional basis. That excess fat from keto is also more than likely going to cause CVD issues 10 to 20 years down the road. Most people hear these videos and don't eat sensible keto diets because those guidelines aren't exactly known, fat bombs and all those other fad things are of course going to follow this fad diet.
