After struggling with infertility for over 2 years, we decided to just focus on getting healthy and went keto. Dr. Berry said in a video “if you are a woman of child bearing years and aren’t using any barriers, you will end up pregnant on keto”. I thought “yeah right not me, fertility treatments didn’t even help”. Bam the next month, pregnant. I’m 36 weeks right now and have followed both Lily Nichols and Dr Berry throughout pregnancy. So excited to see this collaboration!

You made this video for me! Your my favourite keto dr and I looked for this video a month ago when I discovered I was pregnant. I ended up stopping keto because I couldn’t find information, now I am back on the wagon and found this video in a keto group and I am super happy!
I was conceived, born and raised on lots of organic, locally raised protein that was generally BEEF. My roots are farming and ranching… For my entire life (I am 34F) I have rarely gotten sick or had any issues when other people who were raised otherwise did. If it’s not broken don’t fix it.
I was raised on raw milk and beef from our dairy farm. I wonder if that's why I was pretty healthy in spite of all the other junk I ate. We had sugar, but my mom always fed us home cooked meals. Having a freezer full of beef and gardening and canning is normal for us.

Im Watching this at almost 20 weeks pregnant. I was doing ketovore before becoming pregnant. The first trimester I was given a guideline and also suffered horrible meat aversions so i conpletely went off course and ate horrible..basically the foods on the guidline.. so alot of carbs.. I'm finally feeling alot better and have switched back to carnivore/ abit of keto. I should mention that since I did go off course during my first trimester I have gained a TON of weight already. Baby is doing fine but my weight gain is too high for where im at. I'm now trying to maintain it by being in carnivore...and keto. So I truly believe carbs are just not for me.
Absolutely agree with you Dr Ken.. I eat 3 raw eggs every Day . And I'm cryptic pregnant. Cooked eggs make me feel sick. Dr says my bloodwork is fantastic. Never caught salmonella from any egg . Only had upset tummy from eating a neighbour's eggs from chooks which seem slightly neglected. Raw eggs keep me feeling healthy. The Government Safety guidelines for pregnant women around avoiding raw/ partially cooked eggs , eg, soft boiled, needs to change!
I am 66. Stopped having periods at 48. I had PCOS at 23, never had regular periods and had endometriosis . No doctor ever talked about metabolisn and insulin resistance. My husband is 35 and wants babies. I was vegetarian and vegan for 48 years. He got me eating beef. It is probably hopeless but I will try the fasting and carnivore diet first of all to be healthier. I had pre eclampsia in labor. My obstetrician told me every whatever you want. You are eating for 2 now. I found out I had a severe vitamin B 12 deficiency.
What are your opinions about vitamins and supplements before and during pregnancy? Can you do a video about prenatal nutrition, something similar to but easier to understand than Dr. Catherine Shanahan's Deep Nutrition?
Ugh...I wish this was out several months ago. Currently 32 weeks pregnant....so glad to hear about being able to eat eggs any way I want...I have only been eating them scrambled so they're fully cooked...but man I miss sunny side up and over easy eggs.
I’m 36 weeks and been eating my over easy eggs the whole pregnancy after Lily Nichols had mentioned it was ok in a video. My eggs are also pasture raised so it doesn’t worry me at all.
All the TH-cam videos I have found with Lily Nichols are four or five years old. I hope she is well and successful in her family and in her career. With the recent inauguration of the American Diabetes Society (August 2024), I hope that information about gestational diabetes, how to avoid it, how to reverse it, is part of the educational work of ADS. Lily Nichols seems wonderful. She speaks thoughtfully and politely. I would like to hear more about published science studies of prenatal care. Please provide more web links to published articles.
Yes thank you for this interview. I clearly was measured for protein requirements. It was so difficult to limit this limit that didn’t make sense. They said my baby Witold be big and he was only 6lbs 7 oz but had too much insulin in him because of my sugars. I tried so hard to get it under control but the limits were so unnecessary. It’s so much easier to eat meat and veggies.
I was doing zero carb before pregnancy and supplementing with folate, cod liver oil, vitamin c. When morning sickness rolled around, I couldn't stomach the scent of meat and puked up whatever I ate. I ended up losing 12 pounds in the first trimester. The meat aversion lasted until the end unfortunately. I still ate some in the second and third trimesters, but generally I hated everything I normally eat in exorbitant amounts like eggs, checked, steak, etc..
@@User-s868 I’m currently in my third trimester and tried to go zero carb in my second trimester when I started to feel a little better. It wasn’t easy as the meat aversions came back towards the later half of my second trimester. Instead of cooking up meats, I switched to drinking bone broth, eating salami and hard cheese, seafood, raw oysters, eggs, pork rinds, foods that I felt would not have such a strong gamey meat smell...before I finally could eat meat again. Another thing was to ensure I was getting my electrolytes either through lemon juice and real salt or a supplement to prevent myself from feeling moody and losing my appetite. If you can find raw milk or grass fed milk that isn’t heavily pasteurized, it would be good to include that too to make up for loss calories from eating less meat.
I find that really interesting that in the beginning of pregnancy most of the women will feel nauseous and I could stand meat either till second trimester. But that’s when we need all the nutrients that we can get ! Why does that happen I wonder from evolutionary point.
I was keto pre-pregnancy and then I was scared by my doctor and dietitian and moved on to their diet. Now I am on week 21, will my child suffer the effects? I am moving onto KETO ASAP! I cannot believe they still recommend I have oatmeal when any amount of it spikes my sugar to about 170s-200s, super scary.
They simply won't go against the grain of common "scientific" conviction. We are lucky that it's a free world to decide on the basis of our own experiences what's best for us.
In France, they actually advise to eat raw vegetables but only the ones you know were very well washed with water... so it’s not advises to eat a salad in a restaurant or not made by you basically.
This video has been a God-send. It's such a relief to hear that my favorite fish (salmon) is safer than what the mainstream claims. As a dairy-free pescatarian (out of necessity - I'm allergic to dairy and nearly all meat except eggs and seafood), it's nice to know I can add natural sources of fatty protein back to my diet and cut back on the processed vegan meat substitutes.
My children were all gifted and I didn’t know a thing about Keto then but loved meat always and spent lots of time in the sun. D3. I always was a pool person. I also married the smartest man I could find. My advise is lurk in the sun ☀️ as much as possible.

My sister got a handout that says to avoid fish oil and liver because of the vitamin A. I heard that liver is recommended in the video. What about fish oil pills?
Wish this video came out when I was in my first trimester... I’ve been doing pretty well though and I’m lucky my midwife ordered Hemoglobin A1C even though I had no idea what that was.
Hey Dr. Berry, since I just got pregnant and happened to be lucky carnivore for the passt 3 months and I like to stick to it now and forever. Do I really need to take a folic acid my doc is advising me? Thanks and greetings from Germany 😊
I couldn't eat anything for 12 weeks except 1 piece of white bread and salt as my nausea was so bad. I have MTHFR so it was the worst thing to do as our bread is fortified in Australia.
I have MTHFR too. Compound hetero. I can't tolerate methyl donors anymore. My liver is severely fatty. Im getting so skinny, can't tolerate food. Do you know anything I may not? Feel like I'm dying here.
@@stephenienoel106 Oh no that sounds so hard. Definitely seems like you should see a GP who specialises in MTHFR, or at least a naturopath if you aren't already - you might have other health concerns that are linked to MTHFR but that are undiagnosed. It's no good to lose weight without meaning to. I hope you get better soon. It can be difficult to find practitioners who take you seriously.
I know you mentioned to eat your liver etc but I wish you went more into depth about eating liver while pregnant as a simple google search all says to avoid eating liver while pregnant because of the high levels of vitamin A and can cause birth defects. I am currently 10 weeks pregnant, I eat mostly carnivore to ketovore and would love to include liver in my diet as pretty much my prenatal but I get worried because of what I read. To add it also mentions that liver has too much copper which it states is also toxic while pregnant.
In the early eighties my mum was recommended by her doctor to eat liver while pregnant for vitamin A. My brother and myself were born healthy and have not had any problems growing up.
I’m pregnant and just found out that I am actually type 2 diabetic. My A1C is 10.90. I’m terrified! I started keto today and was wondering am I able to bring my A1C down during pregnancy??
Your vitamin D3 needs to be increased or the baby's teeth could really suffer from not getting enough vitamin D3. If your lacking than your milk will be too. He has a video about vitamin D3 for any woman in child bearing years taking extra vitamin D3.
Thank you. I did hear that, it just seemed like it was mentioned so quick. It is rare to find information on the postpartum time. I wondered if nutritional needs differed or increased. And optimal foods to help heal.
I'm a very natural minded person and I grew up in a community that did a lot of natural birth and pregnancy stuff. It hurts me when I had a pregnant roommate . How do I just told her not to eat anything fresh because of the risk of germs and so she didn't have any fresh fruits or vegetables which I was appalled that but nowadays I have learned that maybe fruits and vegetables aren't all they are cracked up to be
Yeah it's crazy how long it has been since we have changed the food guidelines. And medical professionals prefer to ignore it and not teach it. It's interesting you say that it's going to change but in several years. And I believe that it's going to be by demand of the people because we are trying different diets than the government recommends and finding amazing results
@21:09 I sooo love eggs and runny yolks, but right now I can't even stand the sight. 😭 Wishing so much to enter my 2T and be able to eat eggs and bacon again. 😅 Also can't down, tuna, chicken or pork. Beef only in an specific way, I was full carnivore before the pregnancy, and suffering the loss of appetite for meat. 😔 Gonna try sardines and salmon though they are quite expensive where I live.
From childhood I was grossed out by fat gristle and skin. I'm not sure if it was because I was taught this or it grossed me out. Maybe both. I'm doing a good job eating them a lot more often with the mindset that they are very good for me
Same here. I struggle with the texture, the flavor is fine. So I am learning to save bacon grease and the fat cuts from the meat and cook them into liquid and save them in the fridge and use them for cooking. Not only is it delicious, but I am getting more fat. Have pcos, and looking to get pregnant in next year or two. Great video.
The egg thing is an amazing point! If it's not cracked and it doesn't stink then it's fine! That's what I've always thought but I always had that thing in the back of my mind that raw eggs are bad bad bad bad
I’ve been carnivore for 5 years and my ldl hit over 500 now being pregnant doctor wants me to take a monthly cholesterol lowering injection medication :(
I developed gestational diabetes during my pregnancy while I was eating keto and omad, low carbs before and during my pregnancy. So hormones that affect the work of pancreas during pregnancy is the only reason for this not the diet itself. You can eat healthy and yet developed this side effect of being pregnant. It is something that goes away straight after you deliver a baby so how else can you explain it?
My Dr said to not eat any organ meat whatsoever during pregnancy due to the high levels of vitamin A and said it can cause birth defects and miscarriage - what are your thoughts on this?
So is the collagen the really tough white parts that are hard to chew? I have a hard time eating that because I don't like to eat things I can't chew up. I see what she's saying maybe cooking it more in a slow cooker would help
Real sun actually sulphates cholesterol/hormones and helps the liver. Food sources don’t always activate all the enzymes. & food sources of vitamin D are preferred over synthetic sources.
I take 6000 units of D3 per day with added K2, in a capsule of omega 3. Almost 32 weeks. Feeling amazing, baby is doing very well too. Definitely take! Do not forget to add in your omegas, lots of DHAs in particular. I probably supplement around 2500 DHA per day, and get more through my diet. Then iodine and foliate ............ and lots of salt! Also probiotics .... and much more, adding to this a diet like the one Lily and Ken talk about above. Diet should anyway be in the centre. The rest is important insurance :)
What if I am already diabetic type 2? I have been on keto for almost 2 years so far. I reverse diabetes. Mu AC1 is normal. When I get pregnant can I continue with low carb? Please a video about this. All are for gestational diabetes but not when the person already is diabetic thank you
I would think it's even more important to maintain a low carb diet when you've had T2DM previously. If low carb has made you healthy, there's nothing to contradict that you and your future baby would continue to develop healthily during pregnancy. When pregnant, our insulin is raised naturally since it helps build tissue. Simulatiously, babies brains need ketones to develop apparently, according to some studies, spoken about by dr Lily Nichols.
I am 7 months pregnant and a carrier of the genetic mutation haemochromatosis. I ended up in-taking too much iron while leaning towards a keto diet earlier in pregnancy which caused terrible constipation, a metallic taste in the mouth and major fatigue. Any specific recommendations for me? I am still trying to get as much protein as possible while balancing my iron intake, but am struggling.
@@An0nAm0nda That could be! It's funny, by the time I am reading this today, I am obviously not still in the same pregnancy, but am pregnant again and having similar concerns...and actually am craving fats, specifically dairy. So it's interesting to see your comment now, thank you!

They now want me to take insulin or metformin. FYI my A1C was 5.8 a month ago. I know I need to change my diet. Any alternatives you recommend to lower my fasting glucose levels so I don’t have to take any meds? Please help!
I went on Keto is my third trimester of my last pregnancy due to gestational diabetes. It was a rough 3 days while I adjusted (I didn't feel well and lost a little weight). But then everything was fine. I continued with Keto after as well, I gave birth at a lower weight than my previous pregnancy and shed the baby weight faster.

Dr. Berry, would you know of any reputable doctors in my area that I could go see? I live in Northfield, nj atlantic county. My primary doc to is one of those Drs that tells you lies! Please help?
! Oh my gosh I swear my mom taught me all wrong! And my dad was right about food! Dad liked runny eggs and encouraged us to eat the fat and gristle and my mom told us that all of that was gross and unsafe
I have a question. im curently 27 weeks in my pregnancy and decided 3 days ago to switch to keto for the remainder of my pregnancy and breastfeeding/post partum my gestational diabetes test was 4.7 hour after the glucose drive. my question is .... Is there any benefit for me to do keto for the rest of my pregnancy since i react well to carbs and am not pre diabetic. thanks

Thank you very much! I very much appreciate the recommendations and the honesty!
Lived is not a substitute for a prenatal. It doesn’t have even half of the things a prenatal contains.
I’m pregnant and just found out that I am actually type 2 diabetic. My A1C is 10.90. I’m terrified! I started keto today and was wondering am I able to bring my A1C down during pregnancy??
No liver in the 1st trimester is because it's dangerous or because of the aversion to meat? Need clarity on this.
Is this what you recommend for postpartum and breastfeeding also? Is there anything specific that you'd add or change while breastfeeding?
Your vitamin D3 needs to be increased or the baby's teeth could really suffer from not getting enough vitamin D3. If your lacking than your milk will be too. He has a video about vitamin D3 for any woman in child bearing years taking extra vitamin D3.
Ashley Ague at the end of the video he says it’s true and covers the breastfeeding period
Thank you. I did hear that, it just seemed like it was mentioned so quick. It is rare to find information on the postpartum time. I wondered if nutritional needs differed or increased. And optimal foods to help heal.
@@mamabenzing5872 Thanks!
You can get her book. It has an entire chapter on postpartum.
Wow, Dr Berry, you keep making these great videos 👍😊❤️
I'm a very natural minded person and I grew up in a community that did a lot of natural birth and pregnancy stuff. It hurts me when I had a pregnant roommate . How do I just told her not to eat anything fresh because of the risk of germs and so she didn't have any fresh fruits or vegetables which I was appalled that but nowadays I have learned that maybe fruits and vegetables aren't all they are cracked up to be
This video is solid! Thank you!!!
Ken! How about postpartum nutrition? Maybe a short video on that?
She has an entire chapter in her book on postpartum nutrition.
Thank you for sharing this incredibly helpful video!
I heard salmon roe was really healthy. Is this a good choice in pregnancy?
Gold! Getting both of your books!
Great video! Ordered the book🙂
Also can't down, tuna, chicken or pork. Beef only in an specific way, I was full carnivore before the pregnancy, and suffering the loss of appetite for meat. 😔 Gonna try sardines and salmon though they are quite expensive where I live.
This information is so appreciated.
I’ve been carnivore for 5 years and my ldl hit over 500 now being pregnant doctor wants me to take a monthly cholesterol lowering injection medication :(
This is amazing info! So thankful for people like you guys!!!! 😀💗👍
Maybe its this and that..
You did omad while pregnant? That is not good, fast anyother time is great but not while pregnant. Maybe that was the problem
My Dr said to not eat any organ meat whatsoever during pregnancy due to the high levels of vitamin A and said it can cause birth defects and miscarriage - what are your thoughts on this?
Following too
I cannot eat eggs during pregnancy. The WHOLE pregnancy and a bit beyond. I have had the most horrible aversion to them both pregnancies.
So is the collagen the really tough white parts that are hard to chew? I have a hard time eating that because I don't like to eat things I can't chew up. I see what she's saying maybe cooking it more in a slow cooker would help
Hi, fr, Al. Love you and appreciated you sir. Thank you.
Dr berry what can a pregnant woman do if they are on blood thinners Lovenox. Can we take Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3?
Is starting a prenatal with folate at 5 weeks too late? Can one catch up or need to?
Hi,Dr should we take folic acid or folate during pregnancy I heard these are 2 types , thanks
Folate
Is folate the same as methyl folate?
you need both types actally. do your research
I would love to see that baby lead weaning collaboration video
Dr Berry- can we check hba1c and c peptide in third trimester? What shud the values be?
Which study do you reference citing increased protein in pregnancy?
What is the effect of glycation of eating too much carbs with Protein?
Dr. Ken should ( or can ) pregnant women taking vitamin D 3 ? With k 2 ?
Yes. He has an older video about that. They should take even more.
Then iodine and foliate
............ and lots of salt! Also probiotics .... and much more, adding to this a diet like the one Lily and Ken talk about above. Diet should anyway be in the centre. The rest is important insurance :)
Dang Coppock Never take D3 without K2
The doctor took my a1c with my bloodwork 1st trimester
I am 7 months pregnant and a carrier of the genetic mutation haemochromatosis. I ended up in-taking too much iron while leaning towards a keto diet earlier in pregnancy which caused terrible constipation, a metallic taste in the mouth and major fatigue. Any specific recommendations for me? I am still trying to get as much protein as possible while balancing my iron intake, but am struggling.
Maybe need more fat!
@@An0nAm0nda That could be!
It's funny, by the time I am reading this today, I am obviously not still in the same pregnancy, but am pregnant again and having similar concerns...and actually am craving fats, specifically dairy. So it's interesting to see your comment now, thank you!
@@erinb6369 That is funny! I didn't take note of when your comment was posted, congratulations a second time! I'm about 7 months pregnant with my first and having a really tough time getting all the nutrients I need and keeping my blood sugar under control.
Hi Dr. Berry! I’m 6 months pregnant (3rd pregnancy) and I’ve been monitoring my glucose levels. My fasting levels have been elevated (over my hospital’s recommended 90), usually around 110. They now want me to take insulin or metformin. FYI my A1C was 5.8 a month ago. I know I need to change my diet. Any alternatives you recommend to lower my fasting glucose levels so I don’t have to take any meds? Please help!
Hey how did it go ? Did you avoid medication for the gestational diabetes?
thats the one million dollar question no one and no doctor has solved so far
Hilarious how the Dr used the term knocked up I love his Chanel but that was funny.
I’m 6 months pregnant and insulin resistant.. is it safe to do keto while pregnant?
I went on Keto is my third trimester of my last pregnancy due to gestational diabetes. It was a rough 3 days while I adjusted (I didn't feel well and lost a little weight). But then everything was fine. I continued with Keto after as well, I gave birth at a lower weight than my previous pregnancy and shed the baby weight faster.
Doctors refuse to give me a hba1c test here in the UK, is there anything else I can do to check? I’m 13 weeks pregnant they have been refusing to give it since 6 weeks pregnant
In the US, we can self order test through sites like Ulta Lab.
49:20 checking blood sugar protocoll
Thank you, thank you thank you!
I am from India and I am suffering from fatty liver and joint pain and obesity please help me please please 😢
Slowly transition to carnivore ❤ pain was the first to disappear for me.
Dr. Berry, would you know of any reputable doctors in my area that I could go see? I live in Northfield, nj atlantic county. My primary doc to is one of those Drs that tells you lies! Please help?
He has a video on how to find a doctor near you. I found one near me and have an appointment later this month!
Is kito diet safe in pregnancy
The safest, but remember high saturated fat!
Doc berry, what if the mother is under keto but the husband isn't, is it safe to get pregnant?
Im 8 weeks pregnant and have horrible meat aversion and eggs aversion.
42:00 elevated...
The liver doesnt have to be raw, does it? 😭
! Oh my gosh I swear my mom taught me all wrong! And my dad was right about food! Dad liked runny eggs and encouraged us to eat the fat and gristle and my mom told us that all of that was gross and unsafe
Would love to hear some info on vegan keto/low carb.
Read her book!
I don't think you'll probably like what she has to say as you cannot get the nutrients you need from plants alone.
It makes so much sense!!! A baby is made out of water, fat and protein…so that’s what you should eat 😀
I have a question.
im curently 27 weeks in my pregnancy and decided 3 days ago to switch to keto for the remainder of my pregnancy and breastfeeding/post partum
my gestational diabetes test was 4.7 hour after the glucose drive. my question is .... Is there any benefit for me to do keto for the rest of my pregnancy since i react well to carbs and am not pre diabetic.
thanks
So obgyns push hard prenatal vitamins , but they are all synthetic what do you recommend
I take Ancient Nutrition prenatal vitamins (Dr. Josh Axe's brand). They have liver and folate in them. Pricey, but well worth it.
One option to drink NORA tea daily. It's contains so many natural vitamins. I also take a folate supplement on it's own.
Thorne is excellent! I need real folate, not folic acid and its amazing. The smell could be better but I put up with it because the vitamins make me feel so good.
If you go to her website she has a list of recommended prenatal vitamins. Thorne is one of them.
The recommendations I got was eat lean meat , avoid liver , avoid lunch meats, take prenatal .
That’s because your OB is going by standard and outdated guidelines.
Cool.
Knocked up 💀😂
🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😵😵 I don't think that's very professional. Usually derogatory. Oh well
