6:02 Yasss thank you! People often forget that etiquette is there to guide you to be considerate, and be mindful of other people around you. Not just for you to show off. Some people use it like an offensive weapon to make feel people inferior, when the whole point of it is to make people around you comfortable by being kinder so not to offend. There might be a slight difference between good manners and ettiquette but it can make a huge difference!
That's how it *should* be, but some etiquette rules are more like habits. For example, I don't think it makes any difference to anyone if the bread plate is near the edge of the table or not. Or how you hold a champagne flute. I also think people should be allowed to have a bathroom break during a long formal dinner. It's rules like these, that don't make any sense, that are often used as weapons or means of power, too, because you can't deduce them. You have to be told.

Well since 90% of the first Princess Diaries film was the misadventures of a 16 year old girl discovering that she is actually a princess, etiquette mistakes were legion. The mistakes by the people who were supposed to have been steeped in protocol however, are less forgivable.

I think, the couples sitting together despite it being against etiquette has a simple reason:
The film makers wanted to make sure that the audience understood, who belongs together by showing them next to each other. This is especially true, because the movie is made for children and teenagers, too, not only adults who are able to figure out how people are connected by listening to their conversations and hearing their names and stuff like that.

Women not crossing their legs at the knees was a Victorian era thing. Only crossing your legs at the ankles was acceptable. Maybe Genovia is just really old school in that respect. 😀
It also makes it so nobody is likely to trip when walking past you.
Will never understand the pressure of the people at the table. This would be like answering an exam with live scrutiny every time one would have any meal.

It's so silly. It's not like this rule is in the Bible, like God ordained it or something. I think even Royals would understand if you had to go. They're the ones with the power in this setting, too, they could just decide to change that rule.
You are expected to take care of that before the meal, if you truly had a medical emergency you would simply excuse yourself and no need to explain why unless you needed a doctor’s care.

@@monmothma3358 There are four primary schools of table etiquette which you use based on what country you’re in, American, Continental, European, and British. Continental is your best style to use to be diplomatic, since it’s a combination of American and British styles. It’s main feature is always keeping the knife in the right hand and the fork in the left hand and not switching.

I think the more "correct" phrase would have been "How do you do"
It's more the fact that in Europe, people great each other with one/two kisses on the cheek, while americans just go around shaking everyone's hands, that's very businessman-like.
No, not the upper classes or aristocracy. They say, ‘how do you do’. The middles or working classes might say, ‘Nice to meet you’.

Can you do "What a Girl Wants?" That was one of my guilty pleasures as a teenager, and it's kind of along similar lines.
Remember the book was written by an American, about an American 12 year old that discovers in middle school her dad was a prince in a European country so yes, decorum will have its unique differences. That includes Napkin Rings.
You don’t have to be European to know that you shouldn’t crawl under a table during dinner.

Probably. And however you are doing it now, you're doing it wrong.
Probably just use the same consideration of others in your wheelchair as when you would walk. Such as being careful and deliberate, using good posture, and not running and bumping into others. Not bouncing up and down and correcting her slump was the main things Mina had to learn in the movie.

I love this movie! Part of the reason I love it is she's so awkward trying to learn how to be a princess but she still has fun trying to learn how to do it.

Nice video, this gave me even more of an appreciation for Princess Diaries. I know that may not have been your point but I loved that Mia didn't become the Perfect Princess immediately. She had tremendous fumbles and she knew she still had a long way to go but it didn't stop her from accepting her fate as Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia.

2:52 technically it is a state dinner, considering that they have many official guests that flew in, that were not genovians.
This guy is pointing out all the reasons I didn’t like this movie as a kid but didn’t fully understand or couldn’t articulate why. I also didn’t like Anne Hathaway because she was so over-the-top and had no self awareness and was like “I’m so quirky and relatable!” Except I couldn’t relate to her at all because she acted like a toddler.
I loved your desconstructing. I watched this film one saturday night of winter, i loved it to have fun but like film ... i love Julie Andrews, she is wonderful, but like a queen, she was not natural, she was forced a little. Anyway, these tipes of films are great to relax. Thank you.
