Pixel 8 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro Max: 6 Months Later, Who Wins? 👑

  • Just over six months ago I picked up a launch-day iPhone 15 Pro Max. And, a couple weeks later, because that's just how I roll, I also bought a Pixel 8 Pro.
    For the past half a year I've used these two a LOT -- most of the time, one or both of these have occupied my pockets. I've taken them to six countries, shot thousands of photos and videos and used each of these alongside their respective ecosystem of accessories.
    So this one's going to be a really tough choice, but as always we have to pick an overall winner...

      Pixel has always had the better still camera performance IMO. Google's photo science is just more natural and has better HDR performance. The only area I think Apple has done better is with portraits but Google does better with zoom quality. Apple still is king for video recording by far though. Pixel>iPhone for photography.

    Thanks Alex for this very nice video! I also have both phones, and I'm fully with you. For me also the Pixel 8 Pro for photos and the 15 Pro Max for videos. Battery life is still the best on the 15 Pro Max. But I also have the Pixel Fold, which I also going back to all the time. Photos and videos are also decent! Only battery life is less on the Fold. Keep switching all the time! Keep up the good work!! 👌👍

    I did return the 15PM when it came out because I kept going back to the pixel. It is just one of those phones that just feels right. It was hard to say which camera was better. I liked the 24MP photos detail from the 15 but I preferred the colors on the Pixel and Pro mode allowed for very nice 50MP photos when needed.

      Am so glad it's not just me. About a month ago I upgraded to 15 Pro Max. I already have the Pixel 8 Pro but my plan was to give my Pixel to my wife as she also needed a new phone (her Huwaei P30 Pro stopped working) and for me to keep the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Regardless, ever since receiving it, it has been a nightmare for me deciding which to keep. Firstly, I think the novelty factor of the iPhone plus the battery lasting quite a bit longer makes it more appealing but I just kept wanting to use my Pixel 8 Pro even more. After taking several photos I decided the Pixel 8 Pro was just too good and ended up swapping with my wife. She now has the 15 Pro Max and I am back to my Pixel 8 Pro 😆

      Tbh, as someone who has both, and have used both for quite some time, it really depends on your OS…..I seriously can’t decide between android or iOS, so I keep both…..but there are a few people who would want some features in particular and for them android would be the most obvious pick, and then some for whom iOS will deliver the best of the best, cuz at the end of the day, both sides are extremely powerful and will fulfill almost any task you throw at them, no one phone is soo much better than the other that you really have to change your OS to get “that one thing”

When you take a picture of somebody or something which moves, the focusing of the pixel pro is very slow and even with good lighting the object is blurred. My previous phone a modest samsung a50 has a much faster shutter speed. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Any advice welcome!

    The photographic styles on iPhone can be used to tweak the look on the photos. Use the tone slider to make the photos more vibrant or more moody. Unfortunately there's no way to make the photos more colourful by default if you like that Samsung style boosted saturation but fortunately its easy as pie to boost the colours in post by hitting edit, the magic wand and then moving the slider left and right to tweak the image to your liking.

    I tried a whole bunch of Android smartphones this year hoping to find something that would make me switch back to Android, even though I am 100% in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, Mac mini, iPad).
    The only one I found that could replace my iPhone is the Pixel 8 Pro. I didn’t encounter the same issues I usually find with Android smartphones. The voice command works perfectly (unlike other Android devices where, for some reason, I can never get the voice command to work on the Gboard keyboard). Additionally, when setting up a new phone, you can have an exact copy of your old Pixel, just like you can with a new iPhone.
    This isn’t the case with Samsung, etc., where you end up having to put all the apps back into folders yourself, reorganize everything, etc.
    In the end, I found that the photo and video quality were not as good as on the iPhone, so I kept my iPhone 15 Pro Max and returned the Pixel. However, I’m still looking forward to seeing the Pixel 9 Pro XL. I would be very happy to see Google reclaim its crown as the king of photography.
    They have the resources and talent; I don’t know what’s missing for them to achieve it.
    Having a disability, voice command allows me to write very quickly without exhausting myself, so it’s indispensable for me. Additionally, I don’t understand why, when copying data from an old Android smartphone to a new one, you don’t get an exact copy of what you had on the old one. You have to reorganize everything, redo your folders from scratch, etc. This is a basic feature, and Android is advanced enough to have this functionality. I will never understand this.

    Alex, I have seen/ read/ enjoyed many of your articles and reviews at various outlets over the decades but I need to call this out.
    At 10:28 did you forget the iOS update that completely bricked thousands and thousands of users' phones requiring a visit to an Apple store to rectify? (iOS8/ 2014 I think). And a quick search pulls up many more recent threads of iOS updates bricking phones too. (up to 17.4.1 of Nov 2023). While you may never need to use command lines to fix - with Apple being locked you will have to take time off and book a visit to a store instead (assuming you have one close) or send it away as you can't fix it yourself. That comment was just unfair.
    Same with the comment about lack of polish - possibly less flair/ delight (that Apple does very well) - but I've had few experiences with any Nexus/Pixel phone of things not working.
    The idea that Android is buggy, beta software has been wrong for over a decade.
    Plus - Apple has never apologised for nerfing performance on older phones for "battery reasons" that was used to coerce people into the idea that their old, perfectly functional phone was on it's last legs and they should upgrade.

    Gemini doesn't work well in Australia at least. In regards to Pixel updates I doubt that any revolutionary AI functions will come to the pixel 8 pro in say two years so the years of updates will be redundant as the pixel 8 pro will look dead compared to pixel 10. With all the faults I still like my pixel 8 pro

    I have the 14 pro max ( not much difference between the 14 and 15 imo ) and 8 pro , as always they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
    Although I’ve been an android boy since 2012 with mostly galaxy notes as my common android phone, for the past 3 years I’ve also joined the dark side , and yeah I have warmed to the big iPhones.
    Just me but I prefer the iPhone as a carry around, I like the MagSafe and even some of apples apps like notes for example are good to use , the eco system , Apple, updates , apple manages to get updates done all around the world usually in 24 hours , if any android devices even nominate a month they are going to have an update in your doing well, and even then it can be a patchy mess with some countries not getting the updates till days or even weeks later depending on the brand.
    For happy snaps straight out of the box yeah I think the pixel has a slight edge , but not always .
    Yesterday I took 4 photos of the underside of my bike which I was modifying with pixel , and the light was poor , I also took 4 photos with my 14 pro max, surprisingly the pixel photos all came out a darkish blurry mess , I took exactly the same care taking the identical photos with my 14 pro max, and the pro max camera took an extra second to adjust the exposure then take the shot. All 4 pics from the iPhone were excellent, all 4 of the pixel pics went in the bin.
    In the end for general happy snaps on decent light the iPhones and pixels are not bad.
    Another plus for me on the iPhone is the keyboard , for my biggish mitts , the keyboard on the iPhone seems easier to use , and I think the iphone keyboard also just has a better basic functions.
    It is a bit luxurious to have 2 galaxy’s a pixel and 2 iPhones if I get board using on or the other 😊, again the 14 pro is my carry around.

      @jc0155 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think you’re the first person I have ever seen say that the iPhone keyboard is better for them than Gboard.
      It’s literally one of the main reasons I’m looking at the pixel nine pro or XL or whatever they’re going to call it.

      There's a S24U vs P8P comparison on Toms Hardware, the reviewer chooses photos solely based on which photo is brighter and pretty much nothing else. I preferred the more contrast image the Pixel does in most examples.

    Since I'm not married to any OS I went for the pixel 8 pro and I'm loving every single picture I get out of this phone. The pixel might be under power compared to the iPhone but that's only noticeable if you play mobile games.

      The difference in specs don't really translate to diminished experience on the P8P. Only time the slower SOC shows itself is whole exporting a video.

    • @vernon44427
      @vernon44427 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's about real world experience not numbers....I have both phones. Pixel 8 destroys the iPhone in use ability. Every time the iPhone updates it gets slower. The P8P gets more fluid and faster. Phew pixel 8 pro destroys everyone in camera experience.... The iPhone tends to make everything more color saturated and almost looks fake like a sticker. Video I have it to the iPhone it's a little more fluid but the pixel is about right here. iPhone is just so locked down can't even download apps outside of the app store where android you can download from anywhere
