  • I finally got a replacement for my faulty iMac Pro from the Genius Bar. I'm still mad.
    Uncut conversation with the Apple Store managers - • Full Apple Store VESA ...
    The Apple Store Genius Bar destroyed my iMac Pro. After I made a huge fuss about it, they finally replaced it. But it sure wasn't easy to get it done and I'm still mad at Apple for their lack of "pro" customer support.

      Legally, the computer was repaired and was unusable after the repair. Replacing it and spending $5k was actually cheaper for Apple than to face charges and be forced to replace stands and screws for the entire product line.

    A few years ago I bought a top of the line MacBook Pro to use with architecture software.
    Once I installed everything and started to use it I had a massive runaway RAM issue, where all Ram would be used within 10 mins and then essentially freeze the laptop.
    Took it into Apple store and within a couple of hours they provided me with a brand new replacement Mac. This was because no one could explain the issue of the runaway RAM and it was put down to an internal RAM error.
    Found out a couple of months later via a software update that it was an, at the time, unknown program error that caused that piece of software to consume all RAM.
    Having seen this I realised that Apple had in fact given me a brand new Mac for no reason as the original one was completely fine!
    After finding this out I felt so bad that I went into the Apple store and explained the situation to the same manager that had helped me out with the replacement. He said don’t worry at all, and that the reason you buy with Apple is exactly that reason. They will always help. I have been a Mac owner for over a decade now and have nothing but good words for both the product and the service they provide!

    So what I'm getting from the conversations with the Managers is that... Manager 2 (idk about how much Manager 1 knew of the situation) not only knew about what his geniuses had done to try and repair the iMac, he had allegedly said that what his "geniuses" were trying to do wasn't going to work but let them continue anyway? and then allowed the item to leave the store in a state that he knew wasn't acceptable... Also something to bear in mind, the Managers seem to be trying to be super friendly and helpful but i wonder how much of the blame they are trying to shift off of themselves and on to the Geniuses...
    That's just shoddy and poor business practices

    Dell will provide on site support for a $450 laptop! but for my $3000+ Retina Macbook Pro i need to travel to an apple authorised service center (which is 110KM away ) visit them minimum 2 times for a single issue and make 30 phone calls for status updates. And my Dell XPS is still working fine after 10+ years. The original adapter still working fine. I replaced MagSafe 3 times in first 6 months. And my RMBP screen anti glare coating went off and found several dead pixels. Got screen replacement under warranty with Apple care + (now $3500+ for F__RMBP). Now i have a white spot on my screen for last 6 months. Apple care expired 3 months ago. I never call them for this issue. because i was practicing Yoga! If i decide to replace this screen under Apple care i need to shout , make 50+ calls , 200+KM travel 2 or 4 times , several days waste , many emails and so on..

    The 173 down votes are from Apple or what? The disgusting part of this whole incident is the Apple store did such a bad job to repair it and even worse they tried to hide it from the customer. For a $5000 product, Apple should provide equivalent services or no business with Apple in future, otherwise how dare they price it so high? Apple is becoming such a greedy profit oriented company nowadays. I hope the class action of the faulty keyboard design of Macbook pro 2016 can win to teach Apple a lesson. It is NOT OK to blame everything on the customers, and it is a big NO for future Apple products if Apple still acts the same way.

    I've worked for a contractor who was doing repairs for HP Pro devices 10 years ago - We always had videos that showed the disassembly of the products, recommended tools, Dos and Do-nots, and the works. We did repairs onsite for products that were in the Pro line and, tbh, rarely were owned by Pros.
    HP gave us Contractors a very wide birth regarding warranty repair. They basically said that, if at any point we saw parts that required repair that wasn't mentioned, to repair those parts or order new ones.
    I actually got praise, from HP and my boss, for taking the initiative to order someone a new button panel/Keyboard that was damaged outside of warranty (mostly because the customer was very happy to see me call him back a few days later and ask if he'd like his keyboard/button panel fixed, and he contacted HP directly).
    Why do I mention this? Because that's an out of warranty item, and HP is willing to overlook the specific warranty terms for their pro-product to ensure customer satisfaction. So it's really important to HP to treat their Pro customers as Proffessionals.

    As for Apple replacing the machines of the average Joe, I’ve witnessed it time and time again, from iPhones to MacBooks. For me personally I’ve had 3 iPhones, one MacBook 12”, 5 MacBook Pros, 1 iMac, and 1 iMac Pro completely replaced after the return period. For the Macs, the 12” MacBook and one of the MacBook Pros was even replaced with a brand new next-gen model.

    • @snazzy
      @snazzy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Thanks for watching, Andru! I’d agree that on the whole, Apple support is pretty good. This whole iMac Pro thing though is bizarre. It’s almost like a curse word where everyone gets nervous when you mention it. I think it’s because Apple hasn’t adequately trained anyone. It’s weird.

    • @Andru
      @Andru 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Completely weird. I had an issue with my iMac Pro that was something that any of us would consider to be minor. Enough to complain about due to the price of the machine, but minor enough that it should have been fixable same day (a regular iMac certainly would have been.) They literally did the same thing and swapped it out for a brand new model.
      Surprisingly, I have a 10-core, 2TB, 128GB, with the 16GB graphics card. They don't sell these in the stores, and yet had one there to swap out for me. Very odd to make and sell machines but not have the parts to fix them. Usually that applies that things that are selling so quickly that you are backlogged on deliveries and therefore all parts are going into the production of new machines - but I think it's safe to say that iMac Pros aren't flying off shelves.

    • @Pepperoniman776
      @Pepperoniman776 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Andru you've now had ELEVEN apple products returned and replaced, yet you still buy their products when so many of their products need replacing? I'm assuming that the iMac Pro is bought for professional workloads, I'm at a loss why you would trust a company with such a bad track record for replacements with what is probably critical tasks.

    • @Andru
      @Andru 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Poopatron Poopatron I had products fail from every company that you can name. Out of the roughly 40 iPhones I’ve purchased, 3 needed to be replaced - and that’s the thing - Apple REPLACED them outside of the warranty period when there was no more coverage. They didn’t charge me for a replacement or a repair. Just took the old and gave me a new.
      No other company - not one of the many that I buy from and deal with - has ever made that so easy. Zero. Hell, I had an issue with a Dell computer recently that is not only in the warranty period, but also within the RETURN period and I can barely get them to respond. Apple? I go to the store, show them what’s wrong, and I’m taken care of each and every time.
      I’ve been buying their products since 2001, and I’ve bought everything they’ve released in that time period - many of them multiple times. I don’t expect perfection from any company - Apple or otherwise. The companies that get my repeat business are the ones that go above and beyond to take care of me when imperfection with their products comes up.

    I'm a trained IT analyst (operations, not dev) and work for a fortune 500. You NEVER want something as cheap as screws to be the fault on a product that no expense has been spared in so many other areas. I'm over the whole Apple/PC debate, I just take each product for what it is good or bad. As a matter of fact, living in a windows android world I actually use a mid 2014 macbook pro. I use it because in my opinion it's the last "good" one they designed. Poor engineering is poor engineering, and for a company that holds vanity in such high regard you'd think they would go through insane testing on any product that's going to have their name on it. It sounds like this didn't happen, and believe me slip up happens for a company that's operating at that scale. However, where Apple fails is humility (see my point about their own vanity). They fail to be humble when they falter, and fail their end users because of their own self placed pedestal. It's unfortunate, and I hope they come back to reality at some point, because they've designed some of the best computing hardware in the world (for end users) in the past and I truly wish, and hope they get back to that soon. Sincerely - An IT guy who's in the biz

      @Ironclaw XII The point is it should have never gotten that far. All I hear are excuses and they did the work knowing it was faulty. Please take your fanboyism somewhere else, because you Have to know this is shoddy work and definitely not the quality Apple portrays. Personal attacks on me isn't going to deter me from speaking the truth. The reality is this could have been a perfect storm of events but how they handled it and how they specifically asked him not to post this video....come on. You can't honestly think Apple can do no wrong...or perhaps you've sipped the Kool aid and you do in fact think that.

      @Ironclaw XII also specifically to your point about my employment. The reason I mention that is we buy a piece of equipment that expensive it better not be due to screws or the person who decided to approve that equipment for company use is going to catch a lot of flak because when down time cost you thousands or more per minute you don't want to tell someone oh yeah the equipment was unusable because a piece of mounting hardware damaged it

    Apple continues to stumble and fumble their way in all areas - design, qa, not updating products, poor software planning, lifestyle pricing. Sooner or later, people will walk. How do I know? I'm one of 'em, and between slow processors, poor qa with keyboards, downright silly pricing and poor migration support for us Aperture users, it's clear that Apple prioritizes how to squeeze $1.10 out of a dollar instead of creating quality products.

      you mean $0.01 the cost from a extreme cheap screw to a very cheap screw is nothing buying in bulk. Even more so when you consider they are only making a few thousand of these adapters. And charging 80$ for a 2$ part in total including the box it was put in.

    • @LoociferZ

      Maybe we should just all agree that Apple and their products are shit let alone their ability to service them. Building a computer and soldering half the components on to the motherboard when something could need upgrading or repair is criminally stupid although I've met alot of Apple users and a whole bunch of them weren't exactly kicking the door marked "SMART" down.
      Apple is IN YOUR FACE producing products that have a best before date on them and stupid Apple users suck them up like a female porn star on her first day who wasn't told you don't have to swallow all ten guy's cum because that would be cruel and indecent.
      You use them until they get slow and you throw them out. Or they fail and you throw them out. Upgrades? Right, if you want to pay 4x market price and void warranties if you even EYE a screwdriver next to a Macintrash.
      Sorry, started apple, converted to PC and my life visibly became no only easier but I ended up with a whole lot more money in my pocket for more performance.

      I don't think the screws are the problem. These tiny little screws alone are supposed to withstand the shear that is caused by the heavy case and are therefore heavily stressed. A proper design would prevent the screws from being exposed to this stress. That means that the mount has to be either extremely formfitting so that less stress is directed to the screws or you better design the mount in a way that no stress is directed to the screws at all in regards to shear. The design Apple chose is plain garbage.

    Well, at least you got a normal manager, and NO they don't do this for everyone.
    I had an macbook pro repaired at Apple store,
    And when I returned for another problem few months later, I've been told that whoever opened the laptop previously
    (they did) caused damage (screws were not in place, and they used electrical tape to "secure parts", tape came undone, causing problems).
    and that the logic board replacement would be $900.
    Manager then told me that I either opened the laptop myself or that I took it to a third party repair place (false and false),
    and that he can't help me.

    Apple has been going down hill for years. Now Apples only real claim to fame is second to none marketing.
    I worked for an Apple store many years ago, they were great, if a little pricey.
    Same with repairs. Apple products usually needed less repair (probably due to less user tinker-able/serviceable parts in side) but when they did need repair they were usually pretty good, if a bit pricey and a little slow.
    Now its all gone to hell, but they have a very loyal following that is ready to turn the other cheek (ready for Apple to slap it again). Oh, and their marketing department is still first class.
    I got off the Apple train years ago and I've never looked back.

    I just gotta sit here and laugh because Apple's support used to be SO GOOD, and now they're getting shown up by even the likes of Dell. Like, Dell's Pro support is ridiculously good and the one time a friend had to use them...they sent someone to his house to replace the display on his laptop. Overnight. All on the house. Apple makes you drag it into a store and there's no telling if the "Genius" working on your equipment even knows what they're doing.
    Maybe it's just me but I've noticed the decline happening around the time Ron Johnson left Apple, and said decline rapidly accelerating since Ahrendts took over. Not a fan of Apple's end-user support anymore and honestly it isn't even a consideration when buying Apple products now.

      I used to work for a large innovation company from 2011 to late 2015. Supporting users in a mixed windows/OSX environment. For Windows we used HP. They would also send somebody over same day (if called before 2PM) to service your machine. Apple you need to make an apointment at a Genius bar. (which sometimes could take 2 weeks) Never are they ready for you when you are there on the apointed time (add+15-25 mins) They would disregard my diagnosis, make me wait on avarage 15-30 mins before they get to the same conclusion I did before accepting to repair it. Then I have to waste even more time picking it up myself once ready. Every Macbook that needed getting repaired costed me on avarage an additional 2,5 hours time during office hours. Nevermind the fact that HP's enterprise support package was 70 euros per unit and Apple care 300 euro's for worse support.

    • @abubakrakram6208

      Here's my issue. In some cases, an issue is well known, and Apple can handle it remotely, like when my right AirPod became quite than the left. However, in most cases, Apple needs to physically determine whether to not they can handle the issue at hand. For example, if you buy a $40 silicon case, it gets buffed up, and you want to replace it, Apple WILL do that! But they need to see it in person to determine that. If you claim a speaker's messed up on your machine, they need to hear that. And so on and so forth. These things require going to the store. Guess what? Even in a major city (Houston), we don't have stores everywhere! It's a hassle driving $35 minutes away for something like this. They need to either expand, or offer on-site support. I know it's not feasible for everyone, but perhaps for higher end products, or Apple Care customers.

    Apple is digging their own grave. Between repeated media exposure of their shady planned obsolescence, poor design choices, and draconian control over consumer software options (Apple Store), Apple users are starting to "think different" about what their next computer/phone should be. For the premium Apple products charge for current generation performance, consumers really expect something special in return. Simply getting an Apple logo on your pretty new device isn't cutting it anymore. Apple is falling behind in innovation, their products do not stand out like they once did anymore.

    2:07 LOLOL. Imagine the same scenario at a dealership. You take your new car to the dealership for an oil change. They return the car and inform you, "Okay, we changed your oil but we scraped the side of the car as we were getting it off the lift. It runs fine though, it's just some scratches."

    Throwing a kicker here since you mentioned HP support... I still own a HP HDX 9494nr.... don't use it, but still have it for the nostalgia.
    When I got it I noticed the included Blu-ray combo drive could not burn DVD's, so I contact their support. And discovered they had a specific support department just for my line of laptop. This is not a pro system... it was a media center laptop, but according to HP it warranted it's own support team. And they delivered big time. HP is one company who's customer support as well as personal support tools I have always admired and wish other companies could live up to.

    Seriously, they produced an inferior product, then scratched up your machine and they only offered to make it right because of pressure from Social Media? That's unacceptable. Thanks for posting this one.

    10 years from now I doubt Apple will be selling computers. Their number one priority is cell phones and watches. Their computers have been on the back burner for years now. That's why they started using a lot of the same parts as PCs so they don't have to spend much time on PC/Laptop/Server development.

      Apple's whole gimmick is how compatible their products are with their other products, if you have one apple product like the phone and no other apple product then you'll see how annoying their tech is but people who buy all of apple's products love how easily they synchronize with one another. As an Iphone user with a pc I have no intention of getting another Iphone when I'm done with this one but maybe I'd be thinking differently if I had a mac, apple watch, and an apple tv (Products that I currently don't have a need for).

    This is not a "pro" machine, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they don't support it like one. Real professional gear has high performance, expandability, and easily servicable modular parts. The MacBook Pro and the iMac Pro have none of these.
    Anyway, glad you got it sorted out, and good luck with the new one.

      no IT technician uses Apple, lol. I come from the IT. And i hardly know a developer uses Apple to develope. I know one and he just did that because he was forced by his company, they needed an iOS App.

    • @dcast777

      I work for an MSP and plenty of the tech's use Macbook Pro's. In IT you have to support both so having an Apple to test on is beneficial. You can say you work in IT all you want but again, you probably worked a level 1 helpdesk somewhere.

    • @dcast777

      Because I know plenty of video editors and people in IT and many of them use MacOS. It's not the majority but there are plenty that use them.

      Sure, but he doesn't expose what _he_ did wrong. Only what Apple did wrong. As if a big company having bad employees was a new thing. Also, I don't understand how a bad VESA mount is Apple's fault, since they are not the manufacturer.

      @@Simboiss It's a fucking screw. You stick it in, rotate your screwdriver counterclockwise until it is secure and the screw is not jutting out, and it just *works*. The screw is literally one of the Simple Machines, so having it be *this* fucky is not normal.
