thanks so much. saved my skin. thought i'd attempt a quick fix of the internal button which had worked its way loose and today fell off. looked fairly doable until i totally misunderstood how the spring went back on afterwards. happyu to say its now fixed having watched your video. thanks again for making this.

Nothing special, just what I have in the garage cupboard.... which is currently Lithium Grease, which I got from Toolstation, but will be available at Screwfix, B&Q, Wickes, Homebase, Halfords or any car shop.

Hello, my front door is currently locked shut with the night latch and I can’t open it. Do I need to call a locksmith or can I do something from the inside? Thank you.

If it is a modern latch, the retaining screws are likely to be concealed whilst the door is shut as they are usually on the side where the actual latch is. If it is an older one you may have visible screws, in which case you may wish to have a go yourself to overcome the immediate problem.

The lock button is usually only a simple slide device that then impedes the operation of the main lock. Have tried to move the lock bottom whilst manipulating the main opening knob to see if this releases any excess pressure/resistance on the lock ?

Thank you for your reply. The screws are indeed inside and I can’t access them. The ‘barrel’ is stuck halfway between being open and closed.

Sounds potentially like a barrel problem. So the key can't turn at all? Perhaps try squirting some WD40 oil into the key hole and try jiggling the key a bit.
Failing this it looks like you'll need to get a professional in.
