  • In this review, Jill Ciminillo gets behind the wheel of the new 2022 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX Hybrid for the first time. She discusses the new engine, a towing test, real world MPG numbers, pricing, and driving impressions. Based on the numbers alone, the Hybrid looks like a winner, but what about long-term ownership factors? Tell us what you think in the comments!

While I get the idea of putting someone with little to no towing experience to review towing with this truck, I would have loved to hear feedback from someone that tows regularly with various trucks and drivetrains to get more experienced critiques of the way this iForce Max tows. Hope to see some additional reviews from y’all.

The added cost and complexity will never be recouped, especially by a customer base that often uses their pick-up as a commuter car and rarely ever as a tow vehicle.

No me. I want more HP, torque, and towing ability. I don’t understand the focus on mileage in the luxury truck segment. If you’re gonna pay $70k for a truck built for off road ventures, which has higher insurance premiums and routine maintenance cost, what is a few more dollars for gas? The difference in the gas money is minimal. I fully understand it for a work truck, but a TRD Pro and as Capstone is not a work truck

Just saw a SR5 in person (finally) yesterday. Really nice looking, IMO, because that Fu Manchu “chrome” grill outline component was red like the rest of the truck. MUCH less busy, much more polished than anything else. Seeing one in person made me cancel my F-150 order. It’s fine for what I need, as long as the reliability is still there.

Time will tell if Toyota has been able to maintain their reputation for quality and durability. I would likely be looking at a non-hybrid 4x4 Platinum or a 1794. 13:40.
I want to say I enjoyed your video. Great review. As a current Tundra V8 owner my issue is the entry cost. I paid $48,800 for a 2021 TRD Pro Tundra double cab and I can tow 9900 lbs, 1450 lbs cargo weight, and average 15.5 city and 18.7 highway. These are my lifetime numbers according to my onboard computer.
To get the Limited Trim TRD Off Road 2022 Which I think is relatively similar package as what I have in the 2022 model, and then speced it out as generic as I could minus the off road items that I have on my TRD Pro, and the price is $59,762. That is an $11,000 difference and that is with the regular 3.5L TT6. To get the Hybrid you bring that price to $63,162. That difference is $14,362.
I would have to drive 257,000 miles to break when comparing the combined mileage on the 5.7L V8 to the 3.5L TT6 and 315,000 miles to break even on the Hybrid Iforce Max.
This goes for any V8 truck if you can get it for less than $49,000 which I highly recommend you do.

I’m taking the wait and see attitude since having a 2016 Tundra and not being in a hurry to upgrade. My extent of repairs has been standard maintenance such as tires, brakes, oil changes period. This throw away truck does not come anywhere near a diesel truck in term of towing.

    • @icare7151
      @icare7151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@troyb4533 In terms of only torque, the Toyota Tundra hybrid does have a torque curve of a diesel which is only 15% of the “why” people purchase diesels and diesels for towing.
Toyota is NOT going to sway any measurable amount of diesel users to switch to this underperforming hybrid system.
In fact the hybrid system cost vs the disappointing small gain in fuel economy is not worth the additional cost, weight and complexity of the hybrid system. Toyota has already lost many of their v8 customers, including our organization.
For current diesel owners, fuel economy, long term durability, reliability and true towing capability, diesel owners will keep and repurchase their and our Ford PowerSstroke’s, GM Duramax’s, Ram Cummins’s for all their and our towing and heavy payload applications.
Toyota’s huge mistake for USA V8 customers:
if we want more torque, complexity expensive system than our Toyota v8, we are switching to a diesel counter part that has more hp & torque, superior fuel economy, durability and longevity., than the new Toyota Tundra, Sequoia and 4Runner hybrid systems.
To replace our 4Runner, we are going with the GM 3.0l Duramax Diesel.
To replace our Toyota Tundra’s v8, going with Ford F-250 PowerStroke, and Ram 1500 & GMC 1500 diesels.
In conclusion, the Toyota Tundra hybrid for towing is a total joke. The huge additional cost for the Toyota Hybrid Tundra, Sequoia and 4Runner doesn’t justify the ROI. A diesel from Ford, Ram and GM DOES. A scientific data fact Toyota clearly is 100% ignorant and arrogant about.
-Nothing personal, just business it’s the “ROI stupid”

In my opinion it seems that Toyota was content to keep the Tundra a niche player with the direction they went, especially with the Hybrid. Yeah it drives nice when towing, but unless you are towing something on the small side on a regular basis you are going to get a HD truck.
I hope they go the other direction with the new Tacoma, the powertrain in the Sienna would be great in it. Just make sure it has significantly more room in the back seat.

Considering the batteries cut off at a very low mph, I wasn't surprised at the numbers and I don't think they are that far off the F150. With the Hybrid you are carrying around a huge battery pack in order to get full power out of the engine on those rare moments (and a little city driving assistance). The problem is I want 437 HP and 5XX Ft-Lbs of torque! When my neighbor points to his Silverado with the 6.2L V8 engine and starts bragging, I can say lets get on the highway.

I waited for this truck and I am really disappointed. I don't know who Toyota is listening to. For people who offroad you don't put tow hooks. For people who use it mainly on road, you don't improve fuel mileage enough. I think the Hybrid hurts the payload to much to really tow the trailers that people want to tow with these trucks. The only reason I still am even considering this truck is reliability.

I think that the main customer base of Toyota Tundra cares more about the reliability than the other things Toyota did not offer with the gen 2 Tundra compared to the trucks Big 3 have offered.
I bought 21 Tundra and inside the trucks it feels like it was designed 20 years ago. Why did I still choose that new, but old truck? Because I care about reliability more than other things. I guess some or more of the Toyota customers will wait and see whether that new engine is reliable and the truck is overall reliable too. I am not a hater of the new Tundra, but it is a very ugly truck. Look at the new Sequoia, it is a beautiful SUV and looking at it, I can take the risk of having a V6TT, but I would not do that for the Tundra.

You have to ask yourself, what's the point? 11 MPG towing at 50% capacity? That's horrendous. ANY truck made in the last 25 years will do that. Power? Any 3/4 ton diesel on the market will trounce the shit out of this hybrid engine. Reliability? Small turbo engines in pickups have proven to be unreliable compared to N/A engines in the same trucks and also have less average longevity. Just ask Ford about that. So what exactly is the point here?
