I know I am way over the max towing #'s but I have went way over the recommended #'s since I bought the truck new and it towed like a champ then and it still tows like a champ nearly 8 years later.
Forget about fixing it yourself or even by your local mechanic after it is out of warranty. With late path of manufacturers to make sure that things do not last past the warranty period, this cool truck can be a money pit.
I still feel hybrid ice engines are going to be the future with hydrogen eventually replacing fossil fuels just because conversion is easier than widespread replacement of entire vehicles.
Great video and thank you for that back seat scene. I had a good laugh! Looking forward to reviews of the other trim levels and hopefully a Sequoia soon.

Amazing how hard it seems to get screens right. They're all either too small, too big, not intuitive, has too many functions like HVAC, etc. Though I get it; the look is "aesthetically pleasing" to keep it symmetrical and not tilt it towards the driver.
I really, really like the Audis and a few other luxury vehicles that have "screens go away now" folding buttons or whatever. Another failure point long term, but sure makes the interior better when the screens arent required.
none of the screens look aesthetically pleasing, every single vehicle interior with a screen will be dated by that screen. quality switch gear/knobs/dials will always be superior in use to a touch screen for functions like HVAC.
I don't understand why the giant tablet in the center has to be symmetrical and face directly forward. For who? I'm the driver. I'm the one who needs to interact with it and see it. I want some cars to copy the "fighter jet cockpit" motif/style that cars like the Lincoln Mark series perfected. Everything tilted, catered to, and directed towards the driver for his comfort and convenience.
I agree with everybody. Of our 2 cars, 1 is new and has a screen, the other is old and does not have one. I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having a screen, other than the 'convenience' of android auto
Hey great review as always guys. Next time you review a Toyota, try to get in contact with The Car Care Nut on TH-cam. He's a master technician at a Toyota dealership in your area. He's very knowledgeable. I think you guys could work really well together.
I'm very excited for all this new tech and design. I saw a Tundra the other day and it looked great, and seemed very fast. I'm personally more excited for the Sequoia though.
Toyota and Lexus are very intelligent. They let their whole lineup get ALMOST to the point where they look so outdated that people start to second guess buying them. Then they use all the data and info over the past years of what has worked and hasn't worked for the other manufacturers and use that information to redesign their vehicles. It is definitely a winning strategy in my book. As a consumer, I never feel like if I buy a new toyota or lexus vehicle, then it will be outdated looking in a year or two because they've released 15 new models and redesigns like some other car manufacturers (**cough** KIA\Hyundai). I just can't afford to upgrade that fast. When I buy a new vehicle, I want it to look new (as in not look like an older model) as long as possible. Otherwise I would just buy used. I just REALLY hope that Toyota doesn't look at Kia\Hyundai's success and start adopting these rapid refreshes edesigns.
They've pretty much ironed out any of the initial issues with the ecoboosts, even then they weren't that problematic. What is your experience "working" on them? The borg warner turbos on them aren't giving out at 50 miles like the Tundras are.
JBL and Levinson are just different heads on the Harman Audio hydra, and in the non-automotive space Levinson is positioned way more as a high end amplifier company while JBL is speakers-at all price points and with a big “value” presence but their JBL Synthesis line is $$$$ for proper high end/installation rich-people home theater stuff. Which is a long-winded and confusing way of me saying that it wouldn’t surprise me if the same team at Harman worked on the audio for both cars, and/or if a lot of the underlying tech and equipment is largely the same minus the “JBL” or “Mark Levinson” on the speaker grilles.
I don't understand why the giant tablet in the center has to be symmetrical and face directly forward. For who? I'm the driver. I'm the one who needs to interact with it and see it. I want some cars to copy the "fighter jet cockpit" motif/style that cars like the Lincoln Mark series perfected decades ago. Everything tilted, catered to, and directed towards the driver for his comfort and convenience.
I don’t like that Toyota only allows people to option the hybrid in the upper trim levels. I’m sure there’s plenty of people who would like more torque for towing, but don’t want a “luxury” truck. They also dropped the ball by not matching ford with a better onboard power system with their hybrid. 400W max. I think even their minivan has 1500W? And I’m beating a dead horse, but I still can’t get over the fact they finally gave people a locking diff but took away recovery hooks. Amongst some other issues, like not offering front bench seats or making the cab smaller, it just goes to show the truck was an afterthought when they designed this land cruiser platform.
I certainly like this truck, and that high end version is pretty with an eye-watering price. I bought a 2021 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel late last year, though, and am 100% happy with that truck even with the recent inexplicable rise in diesel fuel prices.
The size of this thing is just something to behold, and it's not even considered to be "heavy duty". Moving away from this truck, when I saw that the current ford ranger was the size of an early to mid 2000's F-150 when it came out I knew trucks where only going to keep getting bigger. We need more Maverick-sized trucks (The fact that you don't think it's a truck doesn't matter here), to catch on in our market so we can start moving back down to reality in terms of vehicle sizes.
@@jimthumerzs2301 am sure they will eventually offer the hybrid on the lower trims, am not sure we'll even get another all new tundra they will just keep refining it for at least another 15 years
@@jimthumerzs2301 agree. The short bed won't work for people who aren't interested in luxury. We want the Toyota for reliability, but Toyota has learned the economic benefits of upsetting higher trims.
A detail I can't get over (and is a growing trend among a lot of automakers, unfortunately) is the exposed painted metal of the interior window frames on the doors. The lack of trim on these used to be common on and a signifier of the cheapest cars available, for good reason. Most automakers covered this up, even as pedestrian as Honda and Toyota. Now, it's common on $40K, $50K, $60K vehicles to not cover this part of the door frame. It is an obvious cheapening and cost cutting that just looks bad. They will spend more money on wood inlays and fancy stitching on the dash, but not put a basic rubber or plastic moulding to cover exposed painted metal on the interior. I don't get it. It may be nitpicking, but Mark's comment on how the wood inlay meets the edge is equally as nit-picky. Maybe this will be the next trend in vinyl wraps; covering window frame metal LOL.
Huh. I can barely see the paint in the creases of the door on my 2000 4Runner. But then the 2016 4Runner my mom has you can see the paint while sitting in the back seat. It's a grey car with a black interior so to be honest it's not that noticeable. But I will stare at and think why can I see that and also how thick the pillars are in modern cars. That car feels liek a tank everything is so bulky.
Every vehicle I've ever been in has not had those metal window frames covered, this includes a lexus and a bmw. Oddly enough the 2018 camry has them covered, I think it's more unusual to have them covered but a good thing when they are.
Were you guys driving through Cary in the truck too? I recognize all of the footage locations filmed further north, and was pretty sure I saw the truck near CGHS while taking my son to soccer. Great review, appreciate the video and looking forward to the Sequoia

Took a break with a jag..... i want to go back tundra, but i can't help but leaning towards maverick especially if they release an ST like rumored, or even the new canyon of our comes out good. I totally missed that. These guys have so many subtle jokes, I love it.
Omfg. I missed that.
Really wish they found a way to pair that 10 speed to the 5.7 V8.
They can easily do that from an engineering side, it’s the marketing & Gov Regulation sides that prevent it
@@trp2413 maybe so. But I think the gains in fuel economy would still be very noticeable, enough to at least give us the option. In the recent fuel economy tests on TFL, it got beat I believe by the ram 5.7 with a nine speed.
Great review. I am wondering how this compares to the Ram 1500 in overall ride quality? The 1500 seems to be the benchmark for ride quality.
I'd bet the toyota outlasts the ram. I still see tons of early 2000's toyota's in socal
@@messijr5145 That has nothing to do with his question.
@@alh06 Your comment has nothing to do with his question either. LOL. Stupid reply on it's way, let's hear it can't wait
@@messijr5145 No, the reliability of the Tundra has nothing to do with its ride quality. It is amusing to see your outrage as me pointing out this fact though.
@@alh06 none of these comments have anything to do with OPs question......
That was a really good review. Thank you for doing that. I’m looking forward to you reviewing the upcoming Toyota Sequoia. I drive a 2012 Sequoia with 250,000 km on it. Original owner. It’s been bulletproof and a fantastic vehicle. It’s also an amazing tow vehicle. I look forward to you hopefully doing a review on the new generation Sequoia. Thanks from all the way up from Canada.
Ok, seriously, that interior looks GREAT...I'm WAY not a fan of "cloud" stuff in cars, though.
reminds me of mazda!
@@henrik1743 Lots of them are doing it now. It's ridiculous. Hell, BMW is charging a "subscription fee" for you to be able to use stuff like your heated seats and whatever, last I heard...completely ridiculous.
@@rmp5s No I meant interior looks like mazda
@@henrik1743 Ah.
The yassification of the Tundra.
I'll take the old V8.... this thing will be a nightmare when it gets old.
I have a 2015 Tundra 1794 Edition. 180,000 miles on it. I towed over 12,000lbs last week for nearly 70 miles in rural WV. I know I am way over the max towing #'s but I have went way over the recommended #'s since I bought the truck new and it towed like a champ then and it still tows like a champ nearly 8 years later.
You’re horribly underestimating Toyota
I drive a 2019 tundra limited and absolutely love it and I’m excited to get one of the new tundras someday
I'll keep my v8 until the end of time!
Amen.
Agree
Been waiting for this review, not dissapointed💪🏻
Overland expedition to Lululemon had me dying.
The audio quality of this video is insane
Forget about fixing it yourself or even by your local mechanic after it is out of warranty. With late path of manufacturers to make sure that things do not last past the warranty period, this cool truck can be a money pit.
I don’t know I’m a Toyota fan boy all day , but I would really have to think about a gmc sierra denli at this price point,
I still feel hybrid ice engines are going to be the future with hydrogen eventually replacing fossil fuels just because conversion is easier than widespread replacement of entire vehicles.
it already is the present. . . toyota sienna is hybrid only, all toyota models pretty much have a hybrid version
@@ciello___8307 yeah all trucks now except nissan have a hybrid offering i think now
Great video and thank you for that back seat scene. I had a good laugh! Looking forward to reviews of the other trim levels and hopefully a Sequoia soon.
Everytime Savagegeese uploads a new video my T levels go through the roof
Someone was getting a little excited in the review mirror there at 4:58 hahahaha
Think I'll keep me 18 Tacoma with the NA V6. Just can't get behind the turbo craze, especially when it's so difficult to work on.
Not all of them are as tough to work on as this one, and they've been around for years now without many problems.
@@markmiller3279 EcoBoost owners would disagree. lol. And even still, the N/A V8/6 motors are just proven better. I'd sacrifice econ for reliability. I understand the need to turbo everything, but who are we kidding, it won't even matter in ten years as everything with be EV. The turbo and NA debate will be like talking about wired vs wireless home phones.
I have driven Toyotas since 1983 and currently own a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR. I agree with you on the V6. I'm a little sketchy on a turbo 4 cylinder but I am interested in a hybrid Tacoma .I wish they would make a Tacoma Prime minus a turbo.
@@JH-mt3pp I'm also interested in that! Rumor has it that the next gen Taco will be a hybrid system .
hey nice audio idk if you changed it but its very clear and loud
Tens of diesel fans cried out in pain
That black and white interior is insane.
I think a slight tilt towards the driver looks cool. But yeah, I get it.
These videos are just on another level from what everyone else is doing
Mark discussing the interior simultaneously felt super informed and analytical but also like a conversation with a trusted friend.
I just REALLY hope that Toyota doesn't look at Kia\Hyundai's success and start adopting these rapid refreshes
edesigns.
Nah I’m for the refreshes
@@yerpster i would be too if i could afford to upgrade that often
That steering wheel looks incredible.
This thing is dope, way cleaner look than the Chevy.
GM is trash. They make more expensive vehicles while simultaneously cheaping out on everything.
Ttilting/pivoting screen would have been icing on the cake.
With what I’ve seen with working on the ecoboosts motors no way in hell this thing can ever live up to the reliability of the v8 or the na v6s
But that's Ford
@@Turshin if ford still can’t get it right after 11 years maybe it’ll take Toyota 5 😂
Most of todays V8s with cylinder deactivation are garbage absolute garbage.
They've pretty much ironed out any of the initial issues with the ecoboosts, even then they weren't that problematic. What is your experience "working" on them? The borg warner turbos on them aren't giving out at 50 miles like the Tundras are.
@@Terminxman cam phasers, timing chains, coolant leaks, carbon build up, exhaust manifolds, wastegates, and turbos just to name a few
I ordered a TRD Pro and can’t wait. I’m very excited.
The platinum and 1794 trims are equally as nice as this capstone trim,no need for this capstone trim to exist
Unless you want more chrome and 22's
Everything tilted, catered to, and directed towards the driver for his comfort and convenience.
you guys reallly put out good stuff. thanks
Give it time. It’s a Chrysler /Stellantis product.
@@Justin-lc1xz lol you're not entirely wrong.
It looks like you guys are driving a room with windows.
Something about the interior design makes the cabin look huge.
It feels smaller than the previous generation.
Sweet truck and badass video as always. How will cold weather affect the drive quality? Debating going YOLO and buying the hybrid.
5:48 exactly how I’m trying to be in someone’s 50k + truck.
Sugar Shack…so many Easter eggs in this vid. Love it
The size of this thing is just something to behold, and it's not even considered to be "heavy duty".
American commentary?
@@15longway Yeah, I should have mentioned specifically the American market.
6:10 "I see you've gotten used to our infotainment button placement. Would be a shame if someone moved it"
The hybrid system is perfect for towing, hope it's available on lower trims.
Unfortunately it’s only available on the limited and above
They need to offer the hybrid with the 6.5 bed - on the SR.
Didn't work worth a sh!t for Andre's Ford at TFL
Test drive the platinum with my Dad. He’s on a waiting list…9 months.
No full-time 4WD is a major fail. What exactly have you been working on for 14 years Toyota?
Not even that. Where is their all electric Tundra?
5:00 delicately showcases my affinity towards Mark.
I never noticed it until I started watching a lot of videos where the camera angle shows it.
Were you guys driving through Cary in the truck too? I recognize all of the footage locations filmed further north, and was pretty sure I saw the truck near CGHS while taking my son to soccer. Great review, appreciate the video and looking forward to the Sequoia
I dont remember where we were driving the Tundra. Its possible.
Had a 15 Tundra. Took a break with a jag..... i want to go back tundra, but i can't help but leaning towards maverick especially if they release an ST like rumored, or even the new canyon of our comes out good. Or i think there's arguments for basic ram being better. Granted i don't tow, need more of a commuter/ utility vehicle. Bed for light landscaping/ appliances.
get a passat TDI and a small trailer
Awesome review fellas! Enjoy that back seat!!! LOL!!!!
Man I’ll tell you, I am so happy to hear we are consistently moving towards “greener” vehicles. Because, personally, I prefer driving vehicles powered by coal - over gasoline. But that’s just me….🤷🏽♂️
