They definitely should have polled current tundra owners on this! I think they dropped the ball. That could have been a great wow factor item for the truck’s reveal. Maybe that will turn out to be a carrot in the near future to keep sales up.

Agreed it was a miss to only have 400watts of 120v. I'm not needing 2000 - 7,200 watts all day long like a contractor; that is a better use case for a generator. But 400 watt isn't enough for most thing like running power tools for a short period of time, or charging electric motorcycle batteries or boat batteries as you drive down the road (mine draw about 600 - 1,200 watts). So at least put the 1,500 inverter from the Toyota minivan in. I'm sure they will for next year. Toyota either just didn't have time to design it in, didn't want to deal with it, wanted some features to add later, and just get people hyped about it. Toyota's comment about owners not needing it and to use a generator was short sited. I don't want to load, unload, secure a generator for small jobs or needing power while driving. And you don't always know when you'll need the power and so may not have generator along. They will get the message and add something for the second model year is my guess.

Live in Texas and face power outages multiple times a year. I have a $500 generator just sitting in my garage taking up space. Really wanted a tundra and was hopeful they would compete with Ford in the onboard generator category. They don’t understand their target market very well which is really sad since in general they make great vehicles. I will be buying a Ford specifically for the generator capabilities

I don't get whats not to understand unless they just live under a rock. You don't have to do a survey, just look at the comments and the stories of people powering their homes with their F150! They either didnt think of it until ford did it and have to do more R&D before debuting their own, or they're just stubborn like they were with not putting a rear diff lock on the current Tundra.

Next the info center would go blank more times than I liked. Ford said it’s under warranty and did not turn a wrench on anything. Long story short I dumbed it at 15k. I depend on them when working long distances from the house. However, many of them tend to be awkward and unnecessarily heavy, due to the excess weight from a larger battery. If I have some onboard power, I think I might replace some of those battery operated ones with corded versions.

The Pro Power on the F150 is a game changer for Boondocking. I was amazed to find out Toyota did not do the same thing as the Pro Power. Toyota really messed up on that. Toyota is known by boondockers and for them to not think of the outdoors people is absolutely amazing to me. The Pro Power for my camper is the exact reason I'm going with the F150 over the Tundra. It's a game changing feature, and I bet Toyota does it on the 2024 model, but unfortunately I don't want to wait two more years or more for it.

ALSO you are slowly killing all your electric tools by running them on a lower power. When there is not enough power supplied to the tool it will run hotter and eventually destroy your armature. I would run a light bulb off of that but not my power tools especially at a extended period of time.. Toyota does make a quality vehicle just years behind in technology. My belief is they stay away from cutting edge tech to keep the reliability up, so it’s a trade off on what you want… But glad to see your going for the Tundra, I’m looking forward on your reviews on this vehicle, good and bad.

Tim, you are right about Toyota not bothering with fleet/commercial Tundra sales. I work in mechanical construction and I never see Tundras being used period! Ford on the other hand pretty much owns commercial sales and makes affordable, functional trucks. Just remember all the equipment on your last F150: like the work bench tailgate, the work table console, all the tie downs, and of course the 7.2 KW generator. That is what is needed to run an air compressor all day for a framing crew along with worm drive saws. Tundra is a high end Suburban home owner, commuter vehicle, weekend warrior, truck and is simply not equipped to serve as a basic job site work truck. Toyota makes an excellent product, it just serves a different purpose and is equipped as such.

Not true. The base Pro Power Onboard configuration is a 2.0-kW system only available on gas-powered Ford F-150 models equipped with either a 2.7-liter V6, a 3.5-liter V6, or a 5.0-liter V8. The only engine that does not offer the Pro Power Onboard system is Ford's 3.3-liter V6.
With the 2.0-kW system, the engine sends power to a pair of 120-volt, three-prong outlets in the truck bed. This system provides up to 2,000 watts of power to anything plugged into them, which is a significant upgrade over the 400 watts of energy available from most truck bed outlets.

I've been able to charge the battery at home using a Level 2 charger then driving to the track in hybrid mode (saves the battery with capacity of 8 kwh). Takes 2 days of camping to deplete the battery from cooking and charging ebikes and other batteries. In 20 mins I'm able to use the gas in the car to charge back the 8 kwh battery with minimal gas. The Ford Powerboost is the closest thing to my SUV while I'm sure the Rivian and future Cybertruck will be able to do the same. Sure I could just get a gas generator but campers have to turn those off at 11 pm while I can use my car all day and night to keep things charging including my Go Sun 1.1 kwh tent battery which keeps our fridge going.

My calculations could be off, but that’s around 3 or 4 amps max at 120V, 400W. That’s not much. The fuse in the vehicle for that circuit is probably less? Maybe not. Point being, it’s better than nothing but way less than great. Ford is certainly innovative with the PowerBoost and Toyota definitely missed an opportunity. Plus, and as a side note, I’m not very keen on the battery being inside the cab under the rear seat on the new Tundra. So I asked - how do you like it? He personally liked it. As the local fleet manager he said Toyota said they could get us trucks so that is who we went with. ( I dont know when they started the process or how long or exactly how many but it seems like they got about 300 total for the state. I do not think all at once.) He said it rides well, its the base model but he has already been 4x4 to do some work (which is where I saw him) over some decently rough land and that except for the addition of their radios and cabin computer arm to hold the laptop, they were stock and doing great. But Ive always found it strange companies do not talk to Toyota.

I totally agree, if I’m gonna buy a hybrid tundra, it should be abled to run my camper & have everything the competitors have. My 2013 tundra can charge batteries/laptops...etc so what’s really gained? Was hoping Toyota would do the built in generator like Ford, guess I’ll have to keep waiting. Plus I stay away from any 1st year of new engine anyway

  • @Responder117

I disagree that it was a miss opportunity. Personally speaking, it’s not something I would use hardly ever. Would it be nice to have it added as an option… of course, I can’t argue there. However, I think the amount of tundra owners who would use this would be an extreme minority of their sales.

  • @funboyrule
    @funboyrule 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Shouldn’t be difficult for Toyota to add in coming years, this would be a minor change. Importance for them was the structure and engine powertrain, all while a global pandemic vastly changed how they were able to operate and work while developing. I think most people today don’t need it, as you said, but the power onboard is extremely convenient. However, you can but a 1500 watt battery pack with a solar panel to charge it for around $2k, which adding to your new tundra still undercuts the f150 on price

  • @TheModelmaker123

Good discussion. I guess if I were a salesman for the new tundra I would purchase a couple of predator inverters. If a customer complains about the lack of a good inverter, i would pull one out, put it in the back of the truck and say that's not an issue any more. The sales commission on a 60,000 truck has to be decent. enough?

  • @budfox711

I was very dissapointed with Toyota for not offering more choices in the bed of their new Tundra.
They could have come up with some form of step assist to make it easier for owners to hop on the bed of the new Tundra when the tailgate is open, like Ford and GM.
And you are right, by not taking advantage now in offering a power generator in the new Tundra, resulted in a missed opportunity for Toyota to compete more with Ford.
Toyota should have asked themselves the question, do we want to be the best, or do we want to be number one.
And you are right, it will take Toyota at least another 15 years to make a new total make-over of their Tundra.

Impossible, it’s a completely different solution. This is essentially a $40 Walmart inverter changing 12vdc to 120vac… the Ford system is changing 400vdc to 240vac.
