    It's not the Flags, it's the shrill sound of the horns... it's hurting their ears and they have no idea what it is.. take it from someone who has ridden in lots of parades.. I learned young, after being placed in front of bands, fire trucks, giant tow rigs FOR fire trucks, all with sirens blaring of course, loud speakers, dogs barking, balloons blowing in front of my horse, kids running behind and literally bumping into my horses rear, but the ultimate shocker, was at my hometown Gold Rush Parade the parade route loops through town which is dissected by railroad tracks. During the middle of the parade, with probably a hundred or so horses and mules right in downtown, a train came through. There were horses losing their MINDS, several that broke away and took off for the wild blue yonder. My husband and I dismounted and held our horses reins, spoke to them, let them face it, and they were both fine.. I learned then to always pack their ears with cotton batting (the stuff you fill pillows or a homemade comforter with) if we took them to a parade. If it hurts your ears.. it's REALLY hurting theirs.. theirs are more sensitive. The big question is.. who plans these parades.. why put a very loud band BEHIND horses? why schedule a parade in a town where you KNOW the train runs at 1:05 every single day??? Why not schedule the darn parade to start at 2:00??? If common sense were common the World would be a beautiful place

      Note to anyone entering a parade on horseback, MAKE SURE YOUR HORSE CAN HANDLE MUSIC, FLAGS, FIRE TRUCKS, POLICE CARS AND LOTS OF COMMOTION. IT IS NOT THE PARADE ORGANIZERS JOB TO PUT ON A HORSE FRIENDLY PARADE.

    I read quite a few comments. As a musician, drill team (& parade rider) and horse trainer...I have this to say.
    No one ever considered that all this fuss occurred right between 2 tall building!! That highly magnifies everything the band is doing...volume, ECHOing and criss-crossing more weirdly to a horse than any human can imagine.
    The band leader walks BACKWARDS most of the way to watch THEIR group & are unaware of what happens down the street. Probably not critter-savvy enough to have stopped anyway.
    Once a horse spooks, any number of the other horses can spook simply because they're trying to figure out what monster is after the 1st horse. It doesn't matter what amount of training you do, things happen.
    The flag handlers were inexperienced to me. Ok, yes, take the flag but IMMEDIATELY roll it up so it's not flapping & causing more problems!! The wind was also a SCARY factor here that everyone ignored. NEVER chase a horse with a wind-flapping flag! 🙄
    2 horses should have ridden back to get on either side of the Paint who was so scared it didn't want to walk. You NEVER leave someone behind for appearance's sake! Doing so is a good way to send the rider to the hospital...& you never know when it might be You & Your horse who needs some moral support.
    I totally agree...the parade organizers totally messed up by putting the band so close. If they had no choice, they should have had people watching out for this very thing.
    Glad no one got hurt.

    Perfect example on why it is better with these home grown holiday parades you always put the horses either between quiet exhibits or at the end of the parade.
    The secondary reason you put them at the end of the parade is obvious - if they take a dump while walking down Main Street, the band members don't go marching through it as that causes treat consternation to the band members who can't step over it in time.

  • @xojennxo84

    For people saying it’s not the flags... what?! Look at those horses reactions literally every time a flag comes near them and they back from it in fear. I have 2 of my own. Live on a farm with 35 and have ridden, trained and worked with horses for 30 years. It’s the flags.

    • @xojennxo84
      @xojennxo84 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also of course the band started It. But the flags are definitely a secondary issue. We do parades and had the organizer put a band behind us one year and giant bulls the next. We said hard no to both and were moved

  • @Philippalumley143

On the third day of riding my dad told me "make sure the horse is comforted with you riding him" I didn't understand and when I did an jump I fell and I said why is it so hard? I though it was easy seeing my dad riding chip and though it was so easy. It wasn't. It was very complicated. The fourth year was hard. I struggled to make an perfectly jump. That day I was proud of myself and chip. We had done what we had to do long ago. Now my next step is beauty n the beast at a show with chip. I'll be exided for tomarows champ!

    • @amazing7633
      @amazing7633 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed. Police horses have no such problems. They are trained (just like police officers) to deal with crazy situations. They will ignore gunfire, will walk through a blazing fire, can help control a riot, and can even act as weapons if necessary. Recordings for police training your horse are available, and if used properly can make the horse better able to handle unexpected sounds.
      I have been told that a century ago and before, when armies used mounted cavalry, the infantry would use snare drums to scare the enemy's horses.

Some guys that were on the side watching but they were BLASTING a music and my horse was the most close to them and these guys thought it was a good idea TO PUT THE SPEAKER CLOSE TO MY HORSE’S EAR!!!! And what do you know my horse reared and started to freak out. Here is something for people who don’t know DON’T PUT LOUD MUSIC NEXT TO HORSES!!!!! Those horses reacted like that because the music was so loud in their ears.

Luckily we had worked with her and loud noises so besides a bit jumpy was able to hold on and stay seated. But she was covered in sweat after that one.

      The horse was acting out because the loud music, the shrill horns hurt its ears. I used to get invited to do a lot of Simi local parades (within 100 miles) and I learned to pack my horses ears with cotton. It muted the sound for them and I didn't worry so much.

    • @mmfleshman
      @mmfleshman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      k95831 Maybe it doesn't occur to you that It does not matter how much practice and conditioning to sounds & people etc.. ANY HORSE can have an off day. The rider was trying to maintain the horse and should have dismounted when the rider realized that the horse was beyond the rider's ability to control. HOWEVER, your blanket statement about "stupid riders" is offensive to those of us that have worked with horses for many years. As another person commented (in horse person language) There is no 100% Bombproof horse.
      If anyone was "stupid" it was the person who organized the line up for the parade participants. That person should have taken into account the horse clubs and not placed them so close to the very loud sounds a damn marching band.

    A good parade horse is desensitized to be what is called Bomb Proof, and horses spook sometimes for the strangest thing like a string across the road. The rider or horse owner if they continue to ride in parades now knows that they should visit school marching band practices and desensitize the horse to that. I still believe it was other things that made the horse spook.

    No matter how much you try to desensitise a horse to sounds having shrieking trumpets behind them cannot be prepared for anything - you can radios but it won’t actually imitate fully what they can hear as they are more sensitive! The main priority is keeping the horses away from the crowd and trying to get them calm
    But any organiser should understand that you don’t put animals near loud music - they don’t understand!!!

      ωнιѕкєу seriously? No.. if you notice, at the beginning, all of the horses, including the pretty sorrel pinto are standing quietly, until the BAND starts playing. It has NOTHING to do with the flags, they were just a aggravation. This is why you see absolutely no change in behavior when the flags are taken away. Had the flags been the source of its fear, once it was gone, you should have seen the horse instantly start to calm, not progressively get worse by panicking and backing into the crowd!!
      It was the SOUND, that spooked the horse, not the flags. I have been working with, training, breeding, showing and owning horses for three decades. Watch the horse... he/she is completely confused by what the noise is, and where it is coming from. It is causing him pain, so he try's to back away from it, and fails.. he is making all the classic evasive movements he is trying to get away from pain. He wasn't the only horse misbehaving... there were several others reacting as well, their riders just did a better job turning them and getting them going in the other direction.

      Melissa Pate - The sound. Yes, exactly. We were invited to bring ponies to a church event. They put us next to the bandstand, and suddenly a loud band, honking and thumping, started playing. The ponies remained calm, but they all went on strike. Apparently they are union members, and the Pony Union has a rule, "No loud bands, or we won't work." They were asking me, "We go home now? How do we get out of here?" After an hour the band was replaced with a really mellow Mexican band, and the ponies returned to work.

    Never a good idea to have a band playing behind horses or to have fire engines either. I was in a parade once & I was walking my horse & there were fire trucks behind us & would spray every once in a while! Needless to say that it made my horse ansy!! I never was so glad when that parade was over & done with!
    My horse would’ve been fine if not for these trucks that were behind us plus they would sound off the siren to!

    That idiot on the ground only made it worse. There is a reason why I have more respect for the riders of the queen's guard as they leave the riders to it and so there is less for the horse to focus on

  • @loisferell

    Done that, not fun. Parade organizers don’t get it. Not many horses can ignore the sound of drums, horns, and all the stomping feet of a marching band. So much better to have the horses coming up behind the bands.

    It's not the band. I hate to be the one to day it's the lack of desensitization of the horses. You should prep your horse better before entering a parade. Most parades put the horses right in front of the sirens of emts and firetrucks be lucky you just had a band. I also use to use my .are to Carrie a flag in front of my marching band we were the Trojans and our colors red blk and white. She was a wild leopard appy. Never had this issue.

    it pisses me off that parades think its best to put a horse in front of a band.. no not a good idea horses have a fright and flight instinct, that could put the rider as well as others in danger.. i ride horses, and from the years of experience i have i know that they need to fix this issue with putting horses near the bands.

    Why don’t they have a signal for ‘fall silent’ we did, whether it was something like this, or 1 person out riding their horse. Also damn daft idea to put a loud marching band in close proximity to animals 🤷🏼‍♀️ organisers…it’s not rocket science to do that for the safety of everyone
