Chaos at the Washington International Horse Show!

- EDIT: Good lord y'all. "Chaos" is being used sarcastically. Try to calm down.
Oct 26, 2011 - NAVONA GALLEGOS riding VATRICIA in the Adult Open Jumper short course falls, horse runs wild and free-jumps a water obstacle backwards.
The old man was my husband, Jay Shuttleworth, horseman, famous bit maker and love of my life. He had ridden every kind of horse good and bad his whole life, trained them, showed them, taught and later in life made custom bits for everyone, including the international teams - you can read articles about him if you look him up. I found this clip by accident - he had always been the one to throw himself into a dangerous situation to help with a horse and it lit my heart to see him still trying to do this just about a year before he had to stay home permanently because of early Alzheimers. I love that you all noticed him - thank you. Jay died in 2019.
My condolence your husband certainly showed his horsemanship skill's with his calm manner.
So sorry for your loss
He sounds like an amazing man. I'm sorry for your loss. 💗
Good bless Him❤
God Bless him 🙏🏻❤️
I love how the old man comforted the horse
Agreed. He was the best.
Phlox Koopman that was my very first thought too
Phlox Koopman he looks like a nice old man😊
Has probably been around horses all his life!
Yes!
The old man absolutely saved the day.
Kaitlin Brooke your so right that’s what I was thinking?
how he did that
How old is he?
Yup, he knows horses alright. The fact that he reached first for the neck for example
Slow & steady!
Horse: Don‘t panic, I got this! I will finish this round for you! *jumps and sees rider*
Wait, what are you doing on the ground?
Funny that was the only jump where the horse hit a bar. So I guess the rider is useful in completing a clean run.
Freacks
oh u play sso same
BAHAHAHHAHA-
Kind horse…
The horse recognized the Senior gentle gentleman's energy as calm , assertive and kind. The seniors guiding the juniors. Beautiful example of love and compassion 🙏💜
Hello Lynn how’s the weather over there
Indeed
Ma compassione per che cosa ?
Now that Old Man is a true horseman, can barely walk but rock solid qualmness.
My sentiments exactly. Gotta love that team though, and that dear old gentleman
That older gentleman is showing us how its done. The rider was having a very nice go prior to the mishap
What's qualmness lol
I agree. I had tears watching him. He goes to the horse's shoulder, not its head and you can bet he was talking to it a calming voice. And did anyone else notice how the horse jumped that jump far better without rider or bridle?
mark warnberg qualmness? That isn’t even a word you idiot. Just because you can walk up to a horse does not a horseman make. Get a clue.
She is a great rider, this fall had nothing she could prevent also. But I love the horse, when he changed direction he also changed leads, he was like "now mommy says when we go this way we have to be on the right lead so I will change"
I noticed him change leads too, very cute!
charina All falls are caused by the rider, she must have done a minor slip up that caused the horse to get nervous, she is a good rider she just messed up, I mean hey a little fall never hurt anybody, unless your a wimp I guess
Yeah, because riderless horses NEVER slip and fall; it must be the rider's fault...
Kathryn Litherland Your right, now that im looking back at the video the horse did slip, I apoligize.
you are very wrong, a lot of falls are not caused by the ruder
For all angry that the horse could have gotten tangled- he was spooked! It isn't the rider's fault and it isn't the horse's fault. The horse tripped unexpectedly, the rider fell, the bridle came of and pony got spooked. So he ran. That's what horses do.
***** in which case was a fault of the course and not the rider
My horse does not he just stand there and look at me like I am a idiot
Emma Mathisen so does mine... But some don't 😂😂😂😂
My pony goes over to my trainer to tattle on me.😂
This is why they're called accidents because nobody is to blame. Could it have been prevented? Why sure it could have, just as most accidents could be avoided, if only,... you fill in whatever fits. Courses are meant to be tough and hard to navigate for the Open Jumper competitions. They test a riders skills and timing abilities to the max. A rider should know their surfaces in order to avoid such a spill, but then there are always those anyway. Always will be.
I don't think I would call it chaos. I would call it a sweet moment when a horse connected and calmed down with an old man. It's heartwarming.
Hello Stephanie how’s the weather over there
Tutto quello che volete, comunque il cavallo si era gia' calmato😊
Just found this clip now. First thoughts were of the lovely elderly man that seemed to calm this horse down instantly. He even walked away leaving others with all the glory. What a man !! Rest in Peace, no doubt tending to horses in the heavens. My horses are up there so maybe he is💞
My applause goes to the old guy who helped
Yes!! 🥰🥰
If your still interested there is a super sweet comment by the wife of this old man at the top of this video.
I love how he gets his leads, circles before the gate and then poops😂
He was finishing his course, just like he knew how lol. Kind of brilliant really
it really is! its like so cute!!
agreed XD
AND does a jump😂!
thats all horses do is shit
Shame :/ She was having a beautiful round too. It could have been a lot worse though and it's just one of those things you have to move on from. I knew something was going to go wrong from the title but the round was going so well that I thought I had clicked on the wrong video. That was really unexpected and I hope she didn't take it too hard.
I know, I've never competed before, but it was looking good to me. It took a while for the 'chaos' to happen so I was wondering if something bad was going to happen or not or if it was just the horse's name!
Um. The title says it so...
@@cherryblossom801 The title doesn't understand the meaning of chaos! 😂😂😂
Yes I was trying to figure out which fence it would be since her round was going so well, then that unfortunate stumble happened. Anyone who actually rides knows stuff like this happens, generally when you least expect it :) It wasn't "chaos". The horse was pretty laid back even when dealing with the bridle. That's the only thing that gave me a few bad moments.
@@cherryblossom801 clickbait of course
That older man is an absolute legend. Great presence and knows how to approach.
Hello Julia how’s the weather over there
Bless the elderly man that helped with that gorgeous horse
Such a beautiful round up until the trip. It happens. Glad it wasn't a major fall.
Beautifully ridden, talented jumper... was heading for a perfect trip, and boom Sad. I always hold my breath watching jumping in indoor arenas. Courses are tight and the footing can be slippery. Glad no one got hurt.
I love how the horse finishes the course, does his hunter circle, then walks up like "Ok, I'm done now. You can let me out now."
Hello Erica how’s the weather over there
Love that little old man. Calm and quiet. Glad horse and rider were fine.
My heart stopped for a moment when I saw him starting to get tangled in the bridle. So happy he managed to get free, and didn't suffer any (apparent) injuries. Also glad that the rider was okay.
Poor girl! Such a beautiful round too! Nothing was her or the horses fault! I hope that neither you or the horse was hurt, but I think that bridle might need a bit of a clean...
Pff.. A real rider knows when it's s time to run and when it's time to slow down... She didn't... She was too fast..
Dude, the horse tripped. She is a real rider. She was doing fine. The horse lost balance, that's like me saying "oh if you were a REAL human you wouldn't have tripped and fell on your face!" People fall, animals fall, it happens . It has absolutely nothing to do with how good you are. Mess ups HAPPEN. So stop gatekeeping.
Valentina Giglio shut up “real rider”
Valentina the horse TRIPPED. She wasn’t “too fast.” That was an incredible round and you clearly don’t know what a good rider is if you think she is bad
@@Valentina-vd2lz well I don’t see u out there competing
I Love how when the horse spooked and bolted, they didn’t try to chase or corral him/her!
They just let the horse run itself down and once it calmed down, they slowly approached it ♥️
She’s a great rider. I ride too! That fall had nothing to do about her riding skills and she could not prevent that to happen!🥺❤️
I love that old man 😭❤️ so cute and he didn’t think twice, stepped right up and helped the horse.
He even changed his lead across the diagonal without a rider! What an adorable horse 💓
Hello Claire how’s the weather over there

Yeah, I love how he hobbles over and the horse is like "Well hello there..."

Rip bridle
+JumpingAround omg hahaha ! the horse was like : I AM FREEEEE !!
liz goesviral the horse was more like "shit, was is this thing under me, chassing me". He was a littel bit in Panic. It's normal and good that nothing happend :)
Lol, that's what I was thinking
JumpingAround . You are right.
I am glad it was the briddle which died, not rider
I have watched this clip or video twice over again...I am glad the Horse & the ride is ok...it is amazing that my horses always stood there ground when I came off not once did they run off they always stood by me and nudged me to see if I was ok horses are such Spiritual and Loving
Hello Denise how’s the weather over there
I LOVE the old guy "catching" the horse! The horse probably thought yay- he's not scary
No offense but their are way to many uneducated people on this site. If anyone didn't already notice, I'm almost positive that this rider was using a hackamore, yes I've seen jumpers using them so don't say that they are either illegal or never used in this level of show jumping or sj in general. People saying that this horse spooked at something is completely false, it was a minor stumble and he got right back up and even proceded to jump another fence. And people who are commenting saying that the rider is an idiot for askin her horse to make that sharp of a turn is also false, in show jumping you need to make tight turns no matter what, and they get tighter and tighter as you proceed through the different levels. This horse was clearly capable of making that sharp of a turn, or else it would have been much more drastic if he wasn't. This is in no way chaos, nor a rider error, the horse stumbled and the rider fell off, and the horse even proceeded to jump another fence because he knows what his job is and enjoys it, or else he wouldn't have done what he did. It is no ones fault, it's simply and error and an accident, it happens.
AND ENJOYS IT! HOW IDIOTIC!!!yes I'm sure the horse ENJOYS all that pounding pressure on his front feet, OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
@@susanflowers7425 hunny. its a horse. theres a reason they use SAND AND SHOES in the show ring. a horse of this caliber, can have scope up to 2m. (if you even know what scope is?? considering you know n o t h i n g.)
And not to mention, the horse was free on his own and jumped the fence without being asked. hes fine.
It's the hunters I'm pretty sure can't use martingales
@@susanflowers7425 it's a freaking horse. They're built for that. Their hooves are shock absorbers. Moron🙄
So unfortunate. It looked like it was going to be clean.
From what I can see the rains look nice and loose! And I spelled it rains instead of the other way because I am speaking instead of typing haha

Love that the horse saw the old man and stepped closer to be safe :)
This was handled extremely well, in my opinion. Everyone stayed quite and didn't try to stop the spooked horse, the let it run itself out, then, they calmly gathered it up. It's always nice to see people that understand horses and how to be responsible around them, if that hadn't been the case, the horse probably would've spooked more and gotten injured. Props to everyone there!
I love horses so much ❤. Did I just see that horse take a jump by himself? What beautiful animals that they are! Nice to see everyone comforting the horse.

Hello Michelle how’s the weather over there
That horse is absolutely gorgeous.. that movement was so smooth. Great round until the trip. And kudos to the older man who comforted the horse!
Djk34💘💖😘🥰💖 he is single how long you are
Oh bless. They were doing such a beautiful round. Just took that turn too tight and they slipped over. They may have recovered, had the bridle not slipped and panicked him.... sweet how the old boy calmed him and brave of him to enter the arena knowing such a large horse was frightened and excitable, yet he just shuffled upto him, put his hand on him and thus allowing another person to 'catch' the horse. Some people really have a natural touch with them. My nan was the same. Xx
That elderly gentleman was such a calming presence to the horse. The rider appeared to be ok physically, thank goodness, and I hope the horse was, too.
The rider is like "well, there goes my expensive bridle"
Thats why I dont buy expensive bridles. 🤣
Me every single time a new volunteer joins and finds a rope halter 😅
Well handled! Kudos to the rider for getting up, not freaking out and helping to get the horse... and not smacking it after!
EternalFreewill yup and I have spotted a camera man behind the jump he has spoken the horse with the three legged camera stand !
@@leonnZawodowiec The cameraman has "spoken" with the horse?
That sweet old man first out to try and catch the horse
Not exactly CHAOS. a horse slipped and cantered round a couple of times, as they do
Beautiful round until the accident! I love how calmly the situation was handled by both audience AND workers
I’ve been to this show many times and the arena is so small with obviously terrible footing. It used to be used as a basketball court, hockey rink and concert venue also.
Why are people so concerned with how the word "Chaos" is used? Jeez, hold your horses (pun intended).
I know, right? Geeeeez.
I'm pretty sure words like "Chaos" are relative anyways. On the girl's point of view that was probably a huge event for her, so for something as simple as that to go wrong, must have been pretty chaotic. Nevertheless, there's no reason for people to be freaking out so much about it xD
Ranisimo I think it could be because the bridle came off. Because that can really hurt the horse
I thought at first Chaos was the horse's name.
Because saying things that are not true in your title are a form of dishonesty, and tacit acceptance of dishonesty as normal in social media ruining our politics, our economies, our health, our climate, and our lives.
I love the old man on the end of the video
Me too! That is the only reason I read any of these comments lol
ShilohSwifty same here :)
The horse must have known the old man. That's why he turned around and went to him. That shows respect and love on the horses part, and a gentle voice on the part of the old man. Love it.
Ines Aboal Barreiro Very touching. You can see how smart the horse is and how wonderful the connection with the man. Gives me faith in the human horse bond.
That lovely old man who got the horse💖
I love this horse! A great rider too - the horse wasn't tense at all, and recovered very well from the panic of being entangled. So many times we see horses absolutely loose their minds when things go wrong, switch to total wild prey behaviour, and gallop like mad through, over, under and on top of obstacles and people, injuring or killing themselves in the process. This is an indication to me that the horse has been under pressure, and there's no bond of trust between mount and rider or driver. So this is really lovely to see and absolutely not chaos!
That horse was AMAZING, imagine your freaking out because you slipped up but your hearts so big you'r still trying to please humans...what a horse!
Beautifully ridden, shame about the sand causing the horse to slip. These accident happen, well done.
Horses slip on grass too. So it's not the surface.
The sand didn’t cause the horse to slip it was the turn
That horse is so honest! Bless that old man:)
Needs the 95-year-old guy to save the day....the horse probably felt safe and went to guy with the lowest heart beat!
And that beautiful old gentleman...horse felt his energy was drawn to him
It was good to see everyone wait for the horse to calm down and not chase it. Approaching calmly when it stopped, that was beautiful
Sad to see the fall, but I noticed that at 1:10 that the horse jumped a fence on its own - the horse appears to be very competitive.
What a round of jumping before that ,BEAUTIFUL
Horse: "You are too perfect, LET ME SHOW YOU HOW IT"S DONE!"---*Gets a pole down*---- Horse: "F*ck"
I have to say, this is anything but chaos. All involved behaved beautifully. Rider, calm, waiting out her horse knowing the bridle is freaking him out, horse going around the course to settle and in the meantime shakes free the bridle, then trots to exit, all done let's go, and elderly gentleman coming out to keep him there and horse responding in kind. Perfect reactions all around.
Goodness all the hateful comments. I just enjoyed seeing the horse jump so effortlessly and glad the rider wasn't injured. Thank you so much for sharing a precious part of your memories. A widow too. You were very generous. Thank you again and God bless you.
That old guy
Awhh what a sweetie :) she's a lucky girl! It was obviously an accident people, no ones fault so no need for the ignorant blame game. And that's funny it was a English hackamore, I thought bitters bridal we're illegal! I think they should be allowed, anyways it was pure luck for horse and rider here. Great and entertaining round :)
If I'm not mistaken, hackamores are allowed in the jumper ring, but not the hunter ring. I do wish they were allowed in hunters...
See the reaction of the horse to the old man...
Kind, wise, old gentlemen have a calming affect on me too. Bless him
That older gentleman had the magic touch. He calmed that horse down immediately with a touch . . . from a hand on a human who houses LOVE within himself in a CRAZY WORLD.
Chaos is a big word. Sad the horse tripped, not his fault, nor the rider's. Good horse.
+Maddie Velez I think he bolted because the bridle hit his feet.
+Maddie Velez He bolted because the bridle got caught between his legs
lol I know. the question originally asked why he bolted in the first place. the bridle clearly made him more scared.
Maddie Velez You'd bolt to if something started attacking your legs
Chaos has only 5 letters so it’s not really a big word (unless you’re illiterate of course 😂)
What an over achiever :) jumping on his own and showing off!
He did hit one of them down tho
th-cam.com/video/4TAUdHjYB1U/w-d-xo.html
Horses know a true horseman when they see him ;)
Watched it 10 times in a row, still waiting for the "chaos" to happen. Looked like a normal day to me....
For everyone going on about this rider, can just point out a few things I noticed.
1. CONGRATULATIONS ON USING A HACKAMORE! BRAVO 👏 👏 👏
2. I don't see an issue with the bridle coming off 🤷♀️ If he did get his leg caught, it would break. And definitely less pain than what a bit would be imposing over the whole course.
3. She DID NOT pull it off his face! Yes she didn't let go of the reins straight away but sorry that's natural. We all try to save ourselves in the moment!
4. He shook it off the rest of the way. So do you know what that means? It has been put on CORRECTLY! Bridles/Hackamores are NOT ment to be on so tight that they don't come off. When they are to tight, that's when they restrict the horses natural movement to be able to do what they need. Especially in jumping.
Bloody good horse & Bloody great rider 🥰
I thought it looked likena hackamore but wasn't 100%. That horse must be amazing to do those jumps and tight turns in just a hackamore probably works more off leg and is really good at yielding to pressure.
Their round was going so well!! :( I'm glad no one was injured, though.
Djk34💘💖😘😘🥰 are you single how old you are
I think she's going to need a new bridle
I love how the horse pooped when he finally stopped
That incredible old man taking matters into his own hands ♥️
Such a good horse, he calmed down so quickly after the bridle was off!
Glad she wasn't hurt. Love how the horse even jumped the fence anyway lol.
I'm like: Wow! So graceful! :o Then I'm like: Oof.
That old man in the suit is at every freakin horsebshow
So glad the horse didn’t trip on the bridle while running around and that the rider was able to get right back up
What a great round until it wasn't. Glad the horse and rider are ok. Beautiful mount - very graceful!
Ahh what a shame!!! Going so beautiful till then!!! Sweet horse great rider!!
"Chaos?" …… apparently you've never watched other horse videos here on TH-cam lol
Don’t know much about this sport or incident but it seems to me like it was handled very well. Both rider and horse okay to ride again another day.

Chaos: Best name for a Horse, Ever.
What a sweet man! Comforting the horse. This is proven to not be the horse or riders fault. If anything it was a problem with the footing or just a trip like usual.
When I fall off, my horse just stands there and looks down at me like “you good mama?” Then when I get up her glares at me and is like “idiot mama, you could’ve stayed on my back”
That old man is a horse whisperer
That course was too tight!!!
She was doing so well though
0:53 " when you are about to get caught watching TV instead of cleaning your room so you run around in a panic" lol
That’s not chaos, that’s just a typical horse reacting to something unexpected happening. He calmed down pretty quickly once he spotted someone to help him.
I hate it when a piece of tack falls off and is still attached luckily the bridle came right off
When the bridal was caught on the horses legs it gave me Anxiety
Bridle
you call that chaos? it was a horse fall with just a little run around, no chaos lol!
chaos is a word used a lot by equestrians in any situation causing distress, usually sarcastically.
get with the program! *joking*
What a sweet horse!! Definitely not chaos. The fall wasn’t too bad bc she fell close to the ground and the bridal got a little tangled between his legs but of course the horse can snap it easy peasy. And plus that adorable old man 😭❤️
Someone who finally lets go of the reins. 🙌🏼👏🏼🙌🏼👏🏼good job. Also a stunning horse !!
it was such a beautiful round until the slip happened
