  • Here is a video explaining the aluminium bearing housing and the hardware installation kit you get specifically for the ally bearing housing, and why you should use it. Enjoy.

    What a great channel! I got a crash course on reading compressor maps as well as you saved my ass on an EFR 9280 build. My current 9180 was purchased as a complete kit from a highly regarded kit builder and it came with iron chra install hardware! In putting together a new setup I purchased the same install kit for the 9280, assuming the last place knew what they were doing. Thanks!!

    I've always been impressed by these Efr turbos since their release. I was about to pull the trigger on a 7670 years ago but I couldn't find a turbine housing to fit my application. Now.. I could've had a new manifold and downpipe built but the cost turned me away. If I ever do another turbo build I'll be forming the process around one of these. You can run a much higher capacity turbo without sacrificing spool... These really are the best. There's a k24 civic time attack car making 900hp with a 9180, and it's got a massive power band. You just can't get that with any other turbo on the market

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly right Kalyn - all back to the compressor map and its width - which relates to the massive power band

    There apparently isn't an option for the efr7163 aluminum housings as they are 4 bolt and the bolt and plate kits you reference in the video are only compatible with the 5 bolt housings. Any reason in particular that you see why there isn't an option for the efr7163?

  • @mkivst180

    Thx for the video. What's the torque spec for the arp bolt ?
    Also, what's the main real benefit of using Alu vs Iron housing ?
    better water cooling than iron housing?
    transfer heat better - yes,
    lighter - yes (but what if weight is not a problem ? )
    Alu bearing housing will fret over time, why not use iron instead ? just trying to weight the pros and cons of each and find out what's most important things to consider when deciding
    If my current setup the dump pipe has got no flex joint, would Alu chra become a weak point ?

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoying the content - The torque specs are 17.6nm + - 1.1nm I would aim for 17nm and be safe in the middle.
      Aluminium in the correct grade and hardness (heat treated) with the correct tension load applied through the fasteners will not fret.
      Pro's are cooling, light weight, and more. Always install flexible joints in any exhaust system, no matter the materials used.

    Do you know the weight difference between 8474 ally vs iron cores and also for a long term road car would iron be a better option? Thanks

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We havent weighed the two side by side - if you have a demand on cooling, or you live in a very hot climate, consider the aluminium option.

  • @RyCoMurphy

    When purchasing an EFR7163-F(V) there's a optional SX-E style compressor housing. What's the benefit of this housing over standard? For an EA888.3.

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The housing is physically smaller, and has no solenoid or DV installed -

  • @St0RM33

    Something that's i've noticed and thought you might know a bit more about it. Even on the high boost actuator it states not to exceed some max pressure like 35psi; If i want to run a higher boost pressure than that what do i do? Get the turbosmart actuator? Even that one has max working pressure..

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reason they state not to exceed the 35PSI rating is because the spring rate only works (compresses and moves the actuator rod) up to this pressure. Anything higher bottoms out and you will experience boost creep and potentially break an engine.....

    • @St0RM33
      @St0RM33 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TurboDirectSA thanks for the reply. Is there an aftermarket actuator/solution that will work with those higher boost pressures?

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@St0RM33 Yes absolutely - Tial make one, and there are a number of other companies who do the same - for massive boost, i would suggest using an O2 can with an ECU control to manage the valve position - pain i know, but it does work well.

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dagger22 Exactly right buddy - the smaller turbos aren't as susceptible to the fretting as the weight is much less and alot less leverage being exerted as the turbo is physically smaller.

      All turbochargers are oil lubricated, and oil obviously cools at the same time. The EFR range have water cooled jackets on the bearing housing also.
