Knocking Ford Mustang 4.6L 2v Complete Engine Teardown | Avoidable Mistake or Random Failure?

- Today were tearing down the modular 4.6 2v out of my mustang drift car to find out what failed. It made on a tune with only basic bolt-ons such as an intake and headers around 260hp. The car was fine until after a spark plug and coil pack cleaning due to the common issue of water getting down in the spark plug wells on these engines. once it was started after this it began to knock severely, you can watch more about it in my other video on it : • When Good Engines Go B...

100% dropped something down the spark plug hole. These engines are indestructible
Its the only thing i can think happened just weird it didn't mark up the cylinder more
The 4.6 or 281 Ford motor is not a hotrod motor from the factory, with only 231 hp in average,it a good motor that holds up with very little maintaince, my has 241000 on it,it burns clean, and after looking inside the cylinders with my scope, the top of the pistons were clean, very little carbon, used no oil,and no leaks.
hmm thats weird for not being a hotrod motor it seem to have came in a muscle car, not only that the block is almost identical to the 4v that came in the mach one and cobra, and shares the same architecture as the newer coyote. I beat the piss out of it Im not too upset it was a matter of time! glad to hear yours is still running well.
Looks like the piston over extended into the head, excess play in connecting rod bearing or wrist pin.
how do i prevent this
That water pump is no joke!
I remember replacing mine. I’m like all the bolts are out this thing should just fall off. 4lb sledge didn’t do anything then I figured out it slides in and out 🤦♂️ really shocked nothing broke.
Check out the stroker kits for the 4.6
I have a older non pi engine that just recently has a spun bearing
If I remember correctly the typhoon intakes made less power than the oem P.i intake
thats a real possibility but i bought it mainly because the all aluminum design stops from having the plastic intake breaking issues
You were running lean. Your tuning. Intake leak maybe.
Looks like it gave it ring wash too. Why the top of your pistons had a little section that had no carbon build up on them right at the walls.
And you had a good amount of fun with it.🤣
Id agree but its like the ring was crushed, afrs were fine there was no weird break up or anything my only conclusion is something fell in but idk
That kinda damage is normally and usually from detonation
yeah detonation is defiantly a possibility
My guess excessive rpm Piston kissed bottom of the head and kablooey
Timing thrown off these are interfaces engines
its on stock limiter so idk what could have happened other then something falling in
Is that the Triton engine found in some Econoline vans?
nope 4.6 2v that was put in crown vics and mustang gt's
