Full-time RV Living has many wonderful benefits, but it can be lonely at times. The need for connecting with "old friends" helps us reenergize. What are some of the things that you do to stay in touch with good friends and keep your spirits high??

Thanks Mark and Trish. The tips you gave for maintaining golden friendships are spot on. My wife, Crisha, and I have been saying "see you later" for our whole adult lives. We married at 19 and have been moving every 2.5 to 3 years thanks to the privilege of being able to serve our country for 24 years in the US Navy. I say "we" and "our" because even though I was active duty Crisha and our kids served every bit as much as I did. It's never easy maintaining friendships, however, you find out which friendships are real though the "see you laters". With us preparing to resume our nomad lifestyle, full time RVing, we remember how quickly "silver" friendships can turn into golden "see you laters". The effort is always worth the reward. Looking forward to seeing you on the road. See you later, TheKampForce - Finely Home.

Part of the reason for us to start full time RVing is we really had no "gold" friends when we hit the road. Oh we had plenty of "friends'" but one of the struggles we had was so many said they were friends but then had no time to keep a friendship going. It was very wearying to spend a lot of time pushing ourselves into other people's lives only to find out they were just being nice. LOL!
When we left, we really only had one home friend that started as a "Silver+" friend but since we hit the road they got inspired by our story and now they have truly become "gold" friends and even took the time to meet us on the road in their RV. Now that we've been on the road for nearly two years we have collected a few other friends, some who have become Gold friends and some "only" silver. But the simple fact that we actually HAVE friends now is a huge step for us and something we were looking for when we hit the road. (We had a couple life-long friends across the country, but no one at home.)
The trick for us to keep our friends is to simply call them. Texting, emails, messages... not good enough. CALL. There's nothing like a random phone call to bring your lives together again. Oh, and to make that call? That means you have to call enough to know how their life and schedule is going. If you don't call enough to know what's going on with them, you need to step it up. That's what we preach to ourselves anyway. 😁
And don't forget to thank them for being your friend. Let them know they are special. Especially if they are single. We tend to forget that honest upstanding single middle-aged people sometimes have the hardest time making friends too. If you know one of those, be extra careful to keep in contact with them. Both of us were married late in life and we know how it feels.

For all you fellow RVer's out there I feel I must post this. Just so you know I am a professional firefighter who this morning at 04:00 responded to a fire just outside an RV in a camp ground. Hot ashes in a plastic pail caught their deck on fire just outside the only door to the occupants RV in which they were sleeping and unaware. Fortunately others in the campground called 911 got the occupants up and out so no one was hurt. I cannot stress enough the need that RV's have at least a 20lb ABC fire extinguisher in their bed room (I keep mine under the bed and a second one by the door) so you at least have a chance to escape. The occupants used the tiny extinguisher from the RV which had NO EFFECT. This RV park was 3 min away from the fire department their RV is a total loss but the owners can continue their dream simply because some one wasn't sleeping well and got up early. Sorry to be the messenger but people must be aware of the risks.

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Sage advice! People should have an ABC extinguisher in ANY room where they sleep, be it an RV, mobile home, tiny house, or sticks & bricks. Kind of you to not only warn others, but also tell them what they need in order to have a chance at survival.

    • @slbd7900
      @slbd7900 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you for this reminder. Also, to be safe, hot anything should never be put into anything plastic. So often we think ashes may be burned out but no so. My heart is happy for the folks who made it out, and for firefighters for whom this, any much worse, is a daily story!

We are Germans living since 9 years in the US. Now soon our American life comes to an end (work) We love it here and we made new friends. But we also have long friendships in our home country or wherever we lived and it is like you said, when we get together its like we split yesterday. If you are a traveler you have to just keep in touch with the ones you love. And here to say - real love doesn’t know time and space.
So now! We sold our house in Wisconsin, bought an Airstream and a truck and have a year to travel this beautiful country before we move back to Europe where family, kids and friends are. Our elderly dog-lady Nelly will be with us. She already came from Portugal (rescue) via Germany to the US.
Learning lots from you guys and enjoy your happiness and the way how you organize yourself living full time in your rolling home.
    Danke!
...Oh and see you on the road 😉

You hit the nail right on the head with this video! Friends are SO important in your life. We just returned from an amazing 6-week camping trip out west celebrating our recent retirement: 41 days, 17 campgrounds, 7 National Parks, 12 states and almost 6,000 miles. At first, we has so much planned that we were too busy to be lonely. It wasn't until we started our 4 day back home trek that we noticed friends gathering around their campsites, laughing and having a good time. It was at that point when we realized how much we missed our friends. Between this COVID "stuff" and our big trip, we haven't seen (OR HUGGED!!) most of our close friends since March. I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind on my daily quota of hugs and I don't like it. Now that it's getting cooler here in Michigan, having outdoor socially-distancing BBQs and gatherings are out of the question. We're going to have to get creative so we can see them soon! Even though we're not full-time RVers, we are experiencing loneliness so I can only imagine how you guys feel. It is so important to stay connected with those close to you. Getting and giving hugs is the BEST. FEELING. EVER!! Thanks for sharing this video. Take care and hugs to Charlie!! Safe travels & happy camping!

I can relate to your bumper damage story, as a new class c owner we took a trip up to Door County, WI after two months of ownership. We don't have a tow vehicle so we drive the rv when we go out to eat. Long story short, I forgot to bring in the awning and wrapped it around a stop sign while pulling out of the campground. I wasn't on camera so I said a few choice words, I'm impressed with how you kept your composure. In an unrelated story, my younger brother Kory is the Director of ticket sales for the Milwaukee Admirals, small world.

Love your videos. We are only part-time, but when we are gone for 3 and 4 months at a time we lose friend connections also. We send postcards once a week to each family member. Before we leave, we buy Birthday cards for everyone who will have a birthday while we are gone so we can send them from where ever we are at that time. We also make plans on trips to meet up with friends we have met all over the US. We also plan trips and meet up with other couples at certain campgrounds or RV parks; doing campfires and game nights.

Those rubber mats are a game changer for the levelers. You put those down so that the tire will immediately drive onto them, then put the levelers so that the tire will make contact with them after about an inch of trailer movement, and the weight of the tires then holds the mats in place, and the grip between the two stops them from sliding. The first time or two my levelers slid and I used those mats, I was amazed how there was zero movement. Definitely get them.

As a person that traveled all over the US and Canada, camping during my summers off from teaching, what you said is so very important. As a person that tends to be painfully shy by nature around strangers, I had to force myself out of my shell to meet people along the way. The easiest opening line was always, "Where are you all from?" followed up with, "Where are you all headed?" Then you get around to comparing notes and you can become instant friends with lots of wonderful people. Campers are the best for that, but like you said, then come the good-byes and you're off on a new adventure. While you talked about your only lives, you never mentioned how the kids deal with the loneliness. That would be a great episode to explore.

We got the rubber pads from Andersen and they tore on the gravel the second time we used them. As a replacement, we bought a thick rubber “Welcome” mat from Walmart for $12, cut it into 4 strips, and now we use that under our levelers on pavement, gravel, or other loose stones. It works great and, so far, is holding up really well.

Good video. I'm sure there are however a few of us who enjoy solitude as well and are more introverted than extroverted; to each their own :-). Wife and I are retired, live in the middle of nowhere off a dirt road on 5.5 acres. We enjoy each other's company, have never liked large crowds, partying or drinking. Our four grown children and seven grandkids are our golden friends I guess. I'm not saying that this is for everybody, but different strokes for different folks. My idea of a beautiful RV Park is parking our Airstream by a trout river where I can fish all day and my wife can enjoy relaxing in a chair and read a book. Keep up the great videos.

I still live in the community I grew up in. So meeting new people is very hard for me when we go out on the road. I'm not an open person to meet new people. But what I have done is make trips to be near Aunts and Uncles that I never see anymore and reach out to them to visit and hear old stories from their youth and old stories they remember about our families growing together. Hey Mark I watch your driving and especially your backing up and at times I sit here critiquing what you do. But as a former semi-truck driver the 2 tips I would give to you is: As they say stop and smell the roses! Slow down! Driving with a trailer is not a race! Just slow down a little. And 2nd look ahead sooner and more often. Being successful navigating a campground, a service station etc. is planning it in your head first. Lines separating lanes are for cars not for vehicles pulling trailers. Use the whole space available in a safe manner obviously, but use the whole road! A lot of times you want to swing in close to your camping site and as you start going past it swing swing out but not too soon. Get the rear wheels of the trailer just past your campsite. And always back in where your watching in the mirror on your side. Just picture at that point the back end of the trailer is now the truck pulling straight in your spot.

Thanks for sharing about friends. You inspired me to write this poem:
    You, my friend, are Gold.
You make me rich with love.
    It’s years we’ve spent together,
    A match made from above.
We meet, though time has passed.
    It’s like we were together
    Because we shared some laughs.
Today I met some Silver folk,
No not their hair, just new.
Our eyes sparkled at each other,
As we shared a cup of brew.
We’ll grow to love each other
    Turn silver into gold,
    We’ll tread our paths together
As each of us grows old.
    Friends old are Gold.
    Friends new are Silver.
    Friends kept are precious.
    True Friendships that we’ve made
    Great memories that never fade,
Will keep us as we travel,
    Until we chat again.
    Love your channel!

Can’t tell you how much we enjoyed this video guys. So relatable on so many levels.
The bumper - while we don’t personally know you Marc, it was clear that you were UNHAPPY. Thanks for sharing this vulnerable moment.
Friends and connections - what a treat Is was to see you demonstrating how you do this and do so successfully.
Sharing all the highs, or actually reaching out - what a GOLDEN NUGGET of advice. We practice this, but have certainly fallen into the trap of sharing our “mountain top and flag” pics with friends, while looking past the simplicity of just asking “how is...”
We really appreciate you guys so much. Your channel has been inspiring us for months, and “thanks” just doesn’t seem to adequately cover it.

My son can sympathize with you with the thumb, my late husband accidently shut my youngest's thumb in the tractor door and latched it! Not fun at all. Glad it wasn't to bad for you. Memphis has the worst roads I've ever been on, they are awful! They were working on them when I was there, but was told that has been a work in progress for years, so go figure. lol What a great video, I love how you keep touch with your "tribe" of friends when ever possible. I can imagine saying good byes are really hard though. So many things to think about! Thanks for all the advice, you guys always have great advice. Hugs, Brenda PS-sorry about the RV bumper.

I totally agree with you. Everything doesn’t always work the first time around. That’s me too. I have to learn and try. But there’s no one telling me I can’t or I’m not capable. Only me and I’m always learning. Never too old to try something new. Lol

We converted a box van to an RV over last winter and have been testing and fine-tuning over summer. Just said "See Ya later" to our closest friends before heading from our longtime home on the Oregon coast and start our adventure journey as full timers. Sad face. I made sure we did video chat test runs and I had to promise to get our TH-cam channel up so they can enjoy our adventures.

This was a great video tonight. Loneliness while full-time RVing is a big issue for many people. It’s awesome to spend time with your partner, spouse or significant other, but you do need your core friends as well.

Your description of coming home and fitting back in is spot on. Military spouses go thought this every time they return from deployments. Both with friends and especially their families. They are off protecting our freedoms, yet for their loved ones life has continued...haircuts, doc appointments, birthdays, school events, etc. The military members returning have to reintegrate into their own friends and family’s life. Sometimes this is hard to do, especially after a tough deployment. God bless our troops and thanks for sharing your adventures and lessons with all of us.

You don't need the mat for the andersons, there is a trick! What you do is use a mallet to tap down yout board about 1/2 inch before the tire. Then you shove the anderson's lip in there and hammer it down with your mallet. That actually puts a 45 degree force when you bring it forwards and makes you not drag the board, then the anderson nicely fits over the board. I have to do it every time i park it at my house haha. Saves me money.

oh guys I love your videos, I love your dream to drive through the USA and visit all the beautiful places. I also started here in Germany. I had restored a 1969 trailer and my wife and I started traveling. Unfortunately, a neighbor burned it down. Now it's time to save on a new one and then explore the world against. you always remind me of the importance of sharing time and memories with family. I would like to thank you very much for that. best regards from Germany. Love you guys

The good news is the chrome bumper is just bolted on, and isn't terribly expensive. I agree, bad things happen why you're forced to choose between bad decisions.
Don't forget, it can be lonely at home also.

Boy do I ever feel your pain with that back bumper incident.
Coming out of a gas station on an angle trying to get back on the highway caused the back bumper to carry the majority of the trailers weight.
    Not a pretty scene.
Love your adventures and Thanks for taking us along via TH-cam.

A very good topic... and one that can be challenging. We have a couple that we take trips with... longer ones occasionally and shorter ones also.
During a short trip to Colorado in June we found that they had left their National Parks passport in the rear seat pocket of our truck... just before the wife and I left for our anniversary trip.
With no time to return it, we did the next best thing... we took pictures of the passport of different parks and sites we visited... along with funny captions... such as “ Passport misses you. Wishes you were here”. It was a great deal of fun, and our way of letting them know that we “ missed” them, and were thinking about them.
Might make this a ritual with both friends and family. Just because we are having fun, doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking about “you”.

Yes you can have those bad things happen while RVing. Our last trip was terrible I wasn't straight when I unhooked and about dropped our 5th wheel on the truck. My fault. Then Hurricane Sally decided to come in while we were in Gulf Shores, Alabama and had to get out and head home. But things happen as we've been RVing for a lot of years and there is more good things, memories and wonderful people we've met to totally offset a few bump in the road. Happy and safe travels! Brand new to full time RV’ing, 3weeks in but have been following you for some time. Raced from California to Texas to wait for grandchild #9 to be born and it is feeling kind of lonely. We can’t go too far away exploring in case something starts to happen. When it finally does that’s our plan to go see old friends who have moved to other parts of the country and see more of this great country of ours. Feels kinda boring now but hope to soon be on our new adventure. Love you guys. and you make it look easy but I know it is not. Keeping Our Daydream. Rick and Barb

A tip to reduce fatigue when driving at highway speeds. Drop your hands from 10 and 2 to somewhere like 8 and 4 or even a little lower. Takes the big muscles around your shoulders out of play.

There’s one thing I can’t wait for the most is Sundays not just a day off of work that I can relax and go to church but I can also sit back and watch some great adventures with KYD and some ideas to put together for my trip hopefully I am still debating if I should start my own TH-cam channel when I do this but I am doing a cheap RV living and everything I’m getting is through trades for free or for the most cheapest price I can get stuff for I am setting up a lot of my stuff through things like KYD communities that are giving me stuff for free to start my adventures thank you to everybody and I look forward to seeing not just a KYD community on the road but much other groups and I do watch and subscribe to and I always look forward to watching this TH-cam group weekly
