But it's not like it matters since Sonic X's story isn't canon. But despite Gamma's previous defection, Eggman created Badniks in Gamma's likeliness in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Battle, and Gamma's successor, E-123 Omega.
Yeah, nobody even knows he died, besides the 2 birds and they wouldn't even be able to tell anyone. And even if they could, nobody would really care that much, he didn't leave an impact on their lives, everyone saw him like 1 time (besides Amy)
@Cheese Wizard Think about it this way, Gamma IS the flicky but imprisoned and encased in metal and wires; and the flicky's consciousness has been overridden and its previous memories no matter how vague, were wiped by Eggman in order for it to serve his every command; yet the innocence of its soul still existed within the flicky and Amy gradually reminded it of its family and life prior to capture through their brief interactions without even knowing it. Thus, eventually the flicky regained its ability to think for itself, even if those thoughts had to be manually converted into digital images for the robot shell to process. The flicky realized its kin had all met with the same fate and had simply not had the will to oppose Dr. Eggman's orders; so it set out to free them from their mobile robotic imprisonment. Beta was programmed to carry out its orders to the bitter end, presumably as Dr. Eggman intended by design. That programming decision was what indirectly freed Gamma's flicky; because it's not inconceivable that Eggman would intentionally omit a self-destruct mechanism from Gamma's and the other robots' design. Gamma never really "died", because Gamma was never truly alive, rather, it was the flicky imprisoned within that made all of those decisions. Although, the game creators hammed up the moment to make a point; that family is important and worth fighting for. It's been a long time since I played Sonic Adventure, and I never realized just how deep Gamma's story really is. I remember feeling his ending was off-putting, but it does make much sense.
i love this game, even the awkward deliveries that seem like the lines were recorded without context. Amy is watching Sonic attack her new robot friend, but she says "stop it, sonic" like he wont stop poking her.
After seeing your post on Twitter, I gotta say I love Creepy Bad Endings! I never want them to stop. They're entertaining and introduced me to some games I'd never heard of!
I remember seeing the Sonic X cartoon/anime do a similar story with Gamma, from what I remember my impression was that Gamma is himself but upon seeing the other birds the bird inside became excited/happy or something similar which caused Gamma to "feel" an emotion deep inside him. So Gamma is "feeling" an emotion not of his own but given to him. So I like to think of Gamma and the bird as their own entity but the bird was like his foreign subconscious, at least that's the theory I always thought of. You know that saying where emotions can drive people to do things they normally wouldn't do? I think the bird is that "emotion" within Gamma. Upon feeling it, he may have not understood it but he felt the birds strong urge to help...save. In the cartoon it was made more clear Gamma and the bird was separate when Gamma got reset but Amy was able to help turn him back to his old self who then proceeded to free the bird inside him and no Gamma did not survive. One last thing I believe the Birds feelings to save his friends touched Gamma, "I want to free my friends from Eggman", for the bird if the E-seires are destroyed then the birds would be free. For Gamma if they are destroyed then they would be free from Eggman's control. I like to go back to the scene where the other E robots are eliminated when they failed and Gamma thought back to that before he turned coat, indicating he didn't like Eggman's cruel treatment of them. Two different goals but in the end the "emotion" drove both of them to their goal. But you could also say Gamma experienced feelings and Visions from "his past life." In reality it was the bird's memories. In the end I still found it kinda unsettling, Gamma may have just followed feelings not entirely of his own.
The shocking thing about Gamma in Sonic X, though, is that he's not voiced by John St. John, but he's instead voiced by Andrew Rannells, who also played Decoe, one of Eggman's robot lackeys in Sonic X
You've always written your captions in a way that provides an entertaining narrative voice in my head to read along. To put it lengthier, I enjoy your written humor and its different to see all-game content, accompanied by no literal narrative voice delivering humor and information quite as creatively and consistently. 👍 Love your 'creepy bad endings' series. Stay safe and live long.
I love concept of robots as characters because they have a very different perspective on life than us humans. The way I tend interpret them in one of my stories called cells, is as characters driven by goals and purpose often times even on a higher level than even humans. in a world almost entirely devoid of humans and with no need for sustenance or fears of death from age, they feel compelled to find purpose and goals. Without one they feel empty and incomplete.
7:18 - it’s interesting that you mention that. I was thinking the same thing a few months ago, so I looked up his English VA. Apparently he passed away shortly after this game due to cancer... sad we didn’t get to see more of his work.
To this day, still my favorite character and honestky one of the reasons why I do like Adventure 1 - especially over 2. Like I recall starting this mission from scratch and liked playing as Gamma as well as fighting the other E-100 Series robots in order to save them. Surprisingly, I like to think that Eggman still had fond memories of him and used his design as the basis for Omega, even if Omega ended up both betraying him and hating any other creations that Eggman did make after leaving him abandoned in a warehouse to guard Shadow. Godspeed, Gamma.
Oh no I don't blame you. The music design in Gamma's story was so good at filling the emotional side of his story, ESPECIALLY the sad undertone his entire motif had. The way they used it in the end was the biggest part of it all, just the sad, slow finishing notes of his motif trailing off as the song of his life story comes to an end. This along with [S] Remember have been the only two things in ANY fandom to make me tear up. Plus, you can see the original intent involving the Gamma Suicide theory in the moment before he fights Beta, meaning even if Beta hadn't shot Gamma then it probably would've happened.
Even with the janky graphics, that final cutscene with Gamma remembering who he is and simply accepting it and letting his consciousness fade… it’s one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire series!
I have a recommendation for creepy bad endings. Fatal fury 1 - lose and get kicked out of the window to your death KOF 97 new face team ending - the bad guys win There’s a lot of bad endings in snk in which I recommend to check out and maybe make a video :)
Gammas story makes the game for me. Maybe that is just my bias for sentient non-living things like robots and golems though. Still, I'll always remember this tin can. It's a very special tin can.
There's a creepy bad ending that has been haunting me since I first saw it. In the third person shooter "Metal Arms: Glitch in the System" from 2003 you follow the conflict between two factions of sentient robots: the Droid rebels and the Mil empire. In the third mission, if you try to advance to the next area before clearing the previous one, you will be warned by your commander to return immediately. If you continue anyway a cutscene plays. In that scene, Mils pose over the corpses of destroyed Droids and take photos with their severed heads, while survivors are put infront of a wall and shot just off-screen while the Mils are laughing. I wasn't sure if it was even real, so I went back and checked, but yes it is real. I also noticed that the scene seems to use pre-release 3D models which adds to the uncanny creepiness. The game is pretty lighthearted otherwise only a bit vulgar, so this bad ending really sticks out. Great video as always.
I remember a weird story about my brother playing through SADX until Big and Gamma stories; while I did Big's for him because fishing, I told him to play Gamma's because of the story and ended up throwing a tantrum...yeah. The next day I saw him after finishing Gamma's story (the credits were playing). Looks like he had finally taken my word :)
Yes, and it was the most successful Sega Dreamcast game in gaming history. And the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA was also dubbed in English in honor of the North American release of the game, too.😃
No dude, I'm sure you're not the only one with that bittersweet feeling with this ending. By the way, Gama's explosion was bigger than the rest of the E-100 series.
I know the focus is on Gamma here, but Amy is wasted on Team Sonic. She should join the diplomatic corps. First she convinces a robot to change sides, then she talks Shadow into fighting in SA2. Girl missed her calling as a diplomat.
Well, E-101 Beta took E-105 Zeta's role in the Sonic X anime, primarily with the mission of finding Froggy. However, E-105 Zeta did make an appearance in the 31st episode, and he's already turned into a large machine.
What's sad is I think even if Gamma survived he probably would end his own life to save the animal inside him anyway. Hence why when he said "Units remaining: Gamma." He was seriously thinking of ending his own life. At least that was the implication.
Sonic Adventure... I have a love-hate for this game. On one hand, it introduced Chaos and the Adventure formula. On the other hand, the story was a bit barebones and most of the characters just...rubbed me off the wrong way (Big and Amy especially). Oh, and the Tails story is my favorite in the game, mainly because Tails finally gets out of Sonic’s shadow. If only Tails’s character in the Adventure games was brought back for his Modern incarnation...
I know right? These days, even Tails is too afraid to fight CHAOS 0 where he previously fought Chaos 4. Like it's sad when you remember how formidable Tails was since Sonic 2 but these days, he is just Mr. Exposition
For me, the biggest issue I had with the story was how disorganized and confused was. Individually, the stories were fine and be summed up as: Sonic vs Eggman, Tails gains confidence, Knuckles does his job, Amy learns how to stick up for herself, Gamma rescues his family by destroying them (all in a day’s work!), and Big tries playing Cat & Mouse with a frog. But collectively, it’s a mess. And when you said the characters “weren’t themselves”, that’s probably because this is the first time an official Sonic game uses voice-acted cutscenes, so the writers and actors probably weren’t sure how the characters should act. They’d fix characterizations a bit by Adventure 2, but still has problems. Also, I’m not a fan of how Tikal’s story just interrupts other characters’ scenarios when they could’ve, oh I don’t know, be after-credits cutscenes! And it’s even more baffling when Gamma & Big are shown this, who, in the collective story, have nothing significant to contribute! That’s pretty much it in terms of story issues since gameplay-wise, I enjoy this game enough, 2/3 of the gameplay styles are fun for me! Those being: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Gamma. Big was unnecessary and Amy is the worst for me.
@@georgecortes3416 I know you shouldn't need a workaround, but, have you ever tried to keep jumping as Amy? It seems she builds up speed faster in the air, which lets you reach top speed more easily, allowing you to spam that Hammer Vault move and actually have fun. At least, it works for me x) Damn, I wish they'd bring back this gameplay style for the main trio, they're a blast in this game.
@@VonFirflirch Yeah, I know, that’s how I did Amy’s Rank-A Missions after all. If I could change Amy’s gameplay, I’d make it so she plays like a fusion between her Adventure & Adventure 2 counterparts and with some differences by making her slightly slower than Sonic in terms of running speed, replace the Homing Attack with a Double Jump (NOT THE SONIC 2006 DOUBLE JUMP TO CLARIFY), her Piko Piko Hammer can be swung around while moving and won’t break any flow, and she would be a somewhat more mundane version of Sonic in being a bit slower and no Homing Attack or Spin Dash, but can do quick mobile hammer swings to compensate. But yeah, I’d want a remake of this game someday, rework the script, give Tikal better implementation, fix the gameplay, good & bad, make things like Big’s story and the Chao Garden completely optional and not required for 100% completion (basically, no Emblems to collect from these), and differ the “repeat” boss fights (Chaos 4 especially) to decrease the monotony. Though if I wanna get more ambitious, maybe there can be a feature to allow every Story Mode character to go through all the different levels like a traditional Sonic stage, even if they don’t do so in Story Mode! Imagine Tails going through levels that don’t end in a minute or Knuckles using his abilities to the fullest like in Sonic 3 & Knuckles by going through full levels! Or maybe extra unlockable postgame characters, where I wrote ideas for a playable Metal Sonic (not as a skin, but his own character), Silver Sonic II, and I even brainstormed a gameplay style for Honey the Cat from Sonic the Fighters!
@@georgecortes3416 Amy was pretty sweet in Heroes, too, she could hover with her hammer. And actually had speed. ;) This formula really was a goldmine I feel, too bad nowadays, it's all Sonic and boost. I'd like to see how characters like Cream and whatnot would handle in the Sonic Adventure style. A Free mode sounds amazing. Getting, say, Eggman in other levels in SA2, for example, is way too much fun to be strictly a mod thing x)
Weird how I literally just replayed the whole game recently and this video is made, Gamma is probably my second favourite story in Adventure with first being sonic obviously, I never knew about the original ending being Gamma shooting himself in the head...god that’d be really dark so I’m glad that didn’t happen.
And this is why Gamma's story is my favorite episode in Sonic Adventure, as well as why Beta takes the #1 spot on my list of the game's best boss battles.
It's really weird how i seem to get more attached to robots than humans sometimes. K2SO was my favorite character in the whole rogue one squad for example.
Gamma is one of my favorite Sonic characters, I would love if Sega pulls something to bring it back maintaining his personality, and not just as an empty shell like in Sonic Battle.
This ending is bittersweet & I still always had that feeling Amy figured out what had happened with Gamma & the Pink Flicky. But, that ending didn't make me cry, but Shadow's storyline in Adventure 2 is very sad, especially the ending; THAT was the 1st Sonic game to make me shed a tear... 😢
Finally someone acknowledges how good the Gamma story is. also I liked how you showed how all of Gammas victory animations because its weirdly good for how terrible the rest of the animations are
Gamma is my favorite Sonic character in the games. I always liked Tails, but after Adventure and how surprisingly deep Gamma’s story got, I couldn’t help but elevate him a bit more. I’ve never been more invested in a Sonic character’s story since. And his legacy left us with Omega...who isn’t NEARLY as good or interesting
I wonder how is it that both red robots of the E-100 series betrayed Eggman. Maybe he should stop using that color for building more of the E-100 series.
If you're too emotional? Well, let's say that after the draining clusterfuck that was Corpse Party, it's nice to just have a cheesy (albeit buggy and dubbed bad though at the very least not Sonic 06 bad, lol) game to see its end, lol.
I'm not entirely sure if this counts as a Creepy Bad Ending, but to be honest, I don't care at all. Gamma's story was one of the most powerful experiences with Sonic Adventure, and I am glad to see it is getting the highlight that it deserves. I miss when Sonic Team's development of their stories was so deep that it moved you, as Gamma's has done. Forever a hero, Gamma. *Blue Blurs for Life!*
The old days on my sega dreamcast, I have to say that gamma's story was always weird to me, the feelings and the music for the cut scenes... just make you feel bad and sad for the robot that for some reason, just wants to save his brothers... and himself :c
It would have been very dark if after defeating E-101Beta, E-102Gamma does a countdown while hardly walking to take shelter due to the damage suffered, as it confirms the targets destroyed, it proceeds with the E series remaining, when it finds out it is the only one remaining, it looks at its hand, has a quick flash of the birds, proceeds to point it's gun at its head/body, no music plays, only the sound of the waves, the camera goes away from Gamma, after a brief pause a gunshot sounds, and in a fading voice we hear "Target E-102 Gamma... destroyed... "
I remember seeing a scrapped idea that for Sonic Adventure 2, that Gamma was going to be the Hero side shooter character at first. It would have been interesting to see how that would have worked. Maybe the Flicky wanted to continue helping and asked Tails to rebuild the robot and he would pilot it. Would have felt a lot more natural than having Tails as the shooter stage, even if such a path would relegate him to a supporting cast role.
I've got an easy suggestion for you. Dreamweb. It's freeware now, it's a forgotten 90s classic. It's surprising how modern it feels, mainly because of the gore, sex, and cynicism. It feels like the game everyone wanted to make in the 90s.
I think E-102 “Gamma”'s story was just the right length, and wouldn't have benefited from better graphics or fancy directing. The simplicity was part of what made it so memorable and emotional. It's “show, don't tell” in perfection. You never really get to see into Gamma's mind (or whatever there is of it), only a few glimpses at a few crucial moments-but by his consequent actions you can tell what conclusions he arrives at. The key moments of the story are mostly silent and conveyed through simple gestures (e.g. Gamma looking at his own hand as he realises there's a bird he needs to free inside of him), and the ambiguity lets you dwell on the events. Were his decisions the product of his own logic, or was he affected by the flicky inside of him? When the picture of the bird family flashed before his cameras at the end, did he find fulfillment before his destruction, or did he choose to disengage his Auto-Recovery System? It's a beautiful tragedy either way. (Incidentally, a completely unrelated robot looking like Gamma and being made of his spare parts appearing in Sonic Battle felt like desecration of a corpse to me.)
For (kinda?) bad ending, you should play The battle for wesnoth, the add on called "bad moon rising". The end of either the prologue or either the chapter 3 are pretty dark.

It's been a long time since I played Sonic Adventure, and I never realized just how deep Gamma's story really is. I remember feeling his ending was off-putting, but it does make much sense.
10:52 That’s why there’s this green orb around the animals. It’s a shield that keeps them alive while being inside a robot.
i love this game, even the awkward deliveries that seem like the lines were recorded without context. Amy is watching Sonic attack her new robot friend, but she says "stop it, sonic" like he wont stop poking her.
"Mission complete."
14:12 The End of Evangelion (1997, colorized)
I love this interpretation a lot
The shocking thing about Gamma in Sonic X, though, is that he's not voiced by John St. John, but he's instead voiced by Andrew Rannells, who also played Decoe, one of Eggman's robot lackeys in Sonic X
i really love gamma's storyline. design, theme music. all of them
Bruh, gammas death is sadder then the titanic. I legit felt so sad
Even sadder than Mufasa's death in The Lion King, too
You've always written your captions in a way that provides an entertaining narrative voice in my head to read along. To put it lengthier, I enjoy your written humor and its different to see all-game content, accompanied by no literal narrative voice delivering humor and information quite as creatively and consistently. 👍
Love your 'creepy bad endings' series.
6:01 "I'VE COME TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT-"
These cutscenes physically hurt me watching them.
funny how sonic adventure was in a very short development hell and yet it was still rushed. classic sega lmao.
Yes. This Story was One of my favourites in all videogames
7:18 - it’s interesting that you mention that. I was thinking the same thing a few months ago, so I looked up his English VA. Apparently he passed away shortly after this game due to cancer... sad we didn’t get to see more of his work.
When i was a child, i always wondered why there's animal we can't pick-up after defeating E-100 series bosses
And now.. i get it 🙃
You can it your right next to the E-Series robot your destroyed
@@braintwo3398 ooohh... okay, thanks 👌
Of course... 👌👌
It’s sad Amy didn’t realize gamma was the pink bird
Sonic adventure might be buggy but it has a better plot and play's better than sonic 06
*Sonic Boom has entered the chat*
That's not saying much, sadly. However, it'a really good game!
It's not even that buggy, the pc port has problems that the og dreamcast version doesn't
@@nothingtoseehere2224 Oh well that verison counts
To be fair that's not a really high bar.
An inevitable sad goosebumpy ending
Fun fact: Eggman programs his robots with both a sense of fear and pain receptors.
Sorry, did I say fun? I mispoke
First Emerl then Gamma, why does the Sonic games make me feel emotional for robots?
This just shows how good Amy was in that game. The girl was really the heart of the team. Something later writers forgot.
1:45 I like how on the Tails version of this cutscenes Sonic didn’t even bother to open up the capsule
Fatal fury 1 - lose and get kicked out of the window to your death
KOF 97 new face team ending - the bad guys win
There’s a lot of bad endings in snk in which I recommend to check out and maybe make a video :)
Gammas story makes the game for me.
Maybe that is just my bias for sentient non-living things like robots and golems though. Still, I'll always remember this tin can. It's a very special tin can.
1:50 Somebody finally put to words the reason why I actually like Sonic Adventure's cutscenes!
1:18 Give it your best Ohno
At 9:55, you can see that Gamma's flashback of Amy still uses the Dreamcast version models. Oops...
I beat sonic adventure when i was in 4th grade and seeing beta being taken apart FREAKED ME OUT.
I know i was 8 back when i played this game for the first time... But i actually cried when i reached Gamma's ending.
Yes, Sonic Adventure Is such a fun time! And it has actually aged very well in some parts
Yes, and it was the most successful Sega Dreamcast game in gaming history. And the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA was also dubbed in English in honor of the North American release of the game, too.😃
I really like Gamma's story, the end made me sad a little, but I guess it makes sense :,)
Dear god, this robot deserve’s more love.
You forgot to mention that E 105 was also altered to be some sort of sentry that cannot move, i guess
Well, E-101 Beta took E-105 Zeta's role in the Sonic X anime, primarily with the mission of finding Froggy. However, E-105 Zeta did make an appearance in the 31st episode, and he's already turned into a large machine.
I think people only hate Sonic Adventure so much because DX is apparently a bad port.
They hate it because it' very dated. But it's still a great game,
@@MarsofAritia this game just isn't for everyone, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I loved this video, it made me remember how great Sonic Adventure really is, even with its list of flaws.
You did good, Gamma. You did good.
Meanwhile, I see Lub Lub's shadow!
@@georgecortes3416
I know you shouldn't need a workaround, but, have you ever tried to keep jumping as Amy? It seems she builds up speed faster in the air, which lets you reach top speed more easily, allowing you to spam that Hammer Vault move and actually have fun. At least, it works for me x)
Damn, I wish they'd bring back this gameplay style for the main trio, they're a blast in this game.
@@georgecortes3416
Amy was pretty sweet in Heroes, too, she could hover with her hammer. And actually had speed. ;)
This formula really was a goldmine I feel, too bad nowadays, it's all Sonic and boost. I'd like to see how characters like Cream and whatnot would handle in the Sonic Adventure style.
A Free mode sounds amazing. Getting, say, Eggman in other levels in SA2, for example, is way too much fun to be strictly a mod thing x)
Weird how I literally just replayed the whole game recently and this video is made, Gamma is probably my second favourite story in Adventure with first being sonic obviously, I never knew about the original ending being Gamma shooting himself in the head...god that’d be really dark so I’m glad that didn’t happen.
i love gamma, he is my favorite sonic character, i got emotional when he died in sonic x as a kid.
7:24 - She can't... This is a family game, Gamma.
And this is why Gamma's story is my favorite episode in Sonic Adventure, as well as why Beta takes the #1 spot on my list of the game's best boss battles.
Why is everyone's idle animation them humping the air?
Because the air is...
_hot?_
I love how he has a unique death animation in Sonic Battle that self-destructs, and I will always remember the line that accompanies that.

It's really weird how i seem to get more attached to robots than humans sometimes.
K2SO was my favorite character in the whole rogue one squad for example.
"give it your be-oh no" a funny line
Of course your not crazy, Gamma is still my all time favorite Sonic character, almost no competition.
Gamma is one of my favorite Sonic characters, I would love if Sega pulls something to bring it back maintaining his personality, and not just as an empty shell like in Sonic Battle.
i wouldnt. it would take away all the punch his character had.
Finally someone acknowledges how good the Gamma story is.
also I liked how you showed how all of Gammas victory animations because its weirdly good for how terrible the rest of the animations are
12:24
I see Sonic Mania took a bit of inspiration from Sonic Adventure.
Git is on a roll with the videos.
There are rumors going around that it was originally intended to end pretty exactly as you described, but they felt it would be too dark.
Another creepy thing about Gamma, is his theme song.
The garbled/machine-sounding voice has lyrics which say:
"It's my pleasure... Ready to die..."
You should do a creepy good endings on this game, considering what gets glossed over in the main ending.
Oh I'm curiousa and can't remember, what gets glossed over?
16:01: I understand that feeling, brother.
Fortunately, unlike E-102 Gamma. Number 5 is alive!
What's even sadder is that, in the Sonic X anime (more specifically, the 31st episode), Amy is the only one who witnessed the deaths of Gamma and Beta
I've got an easy suggestion for you.
Dreamweb.
It's freeware now, it's a forgotten 90s classic. It's surprising how modern it feels, mainly because of the gore, sex, and cynicism.
It feels like the game everyone wanted to make in the 90s.
The flickys were purely power sources so no he really is just gone
I love ur vids it's really good and I love your creepy bad endings
