  • Today is one year since we started the build! We received the kit in late July last year, but didn't actually start the build until August 29th.
    Made better progress today. Got the spacers done and fit up (they still need priming) and the stringers fit and rivet holes drilled and clecoed to the stringers.

    A good round up of the year, it is good to reflect on the progress made, the skills learnt and the fun had.

    I know you are past this now, but I tweaked the tabs a little for alignment. 4130 steel is fairly ductile so a few degrees of bend should not be an issue. The powder coat is one indicator. If the powder coat cracks, you may have gone too far. If not, you are likely fine. I bent a couple of tabs maybe 3-4 degrees without issue.

      Yeah, later on, we bent some around the boot cowl.

    Yes yes Happy Anniversary! Your project manager is So on top of this! great team work. as far as the steel tabs go - minor bend adjustments? as long as the bend is not right on the weld I wouldn't think that would be problematic? however would be prudent to listen to wiser minds than mine.
    Keep up the great work.

    Did you have to trim your upper side spacer strips to clear your window frames? It looks like you placed yours a little farther forward than I did as when I read that they should be aft of the tube, I read that as the front edge of the spacer strip being at the aft-most extent of the tube which placed the cage tab holes almost in the center of my spacer strips. This, unfortunately, caused about 1/4” of overlap with the front edge of the window frames.

    • @s-21project92
      @s-21project92  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, we didn’t need to trim. Had maybe 1/16” gap on ours. If I recall, we put the spacer strips aligned with the front edge of the strip with the front side of the tube.

      @@s-21project92 You may have had a later manual than I have. Mine said to have the strips “aft” of the tube. I interpreted that to mean the front of the strip could not be any farther forward than the aft extend of the cage tube.

    Happy anniversary. Where did that year go? Anyhow great build. I’m on the bubble if I want to build the S-21 or build a Murphy Rebel. Your vids are helping me get closer to making a decision. Keep up the great work.

      Tell me about it! The year really flew by. I never looked at the Rebel. We were almost going to get a Zenith 750SD, but a friend recommended the S-21 (we hadn’t heard of it at that point) and it really checked all the boxes in our 90% flying. We’ve been really impressed with the accuracy of the CNC on all the parts. Very little deburring or adjustment needed (a little here and there, but nothing major).

    Happy Anniversary! I did slow the video down to 1/2 speed in places to understand what you were saying. You probably didn't think it was important but I wanted to hear it.

      @@s-21project92 Not necessary. I was able to understand it once I slowed it down and the segment is kind of long. I'm not building an S-21 so it's not that important to me. I am building a different aluminum airplane.

    Looks like great progress for a year! You might consider thinking about doublers for the various antennas going back in this area. I added a few in the top corners that tie in to the stringers and spacer strips. (th-cam.com/video/iDhzy7eUthE/w-d-xo.html) I don't know how others go about it, but it looks like its gonna work out good for me!

      Just discovered this morning that your comment was in review hold because of the link. I forgot that they get held and just saw this.
      Yeah, we’re doing doublers for all the antennas and flashing beacon. Been heavily using your videos for reference! 👍
      Also been looking at Pat Hatch’s build log. Lots of good info there too.

    So how do you think you are doing hour-wise? My wife and I are about to un-crate our 21 and curious if you feel your progress is in line with your expectations?

    • @s-21project92
      @s-21project92  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is our first build. I think Rans says it’s about a 500 hour build. I figured double would get us in the ballpark. We’re a little over 500 hours in now, so I think we’re on track for 1,000 hours. Calendar-wise, I was hoping to have it flying by Feb/Mar of 2022 (and get through phase-1 in time for Oshkosh), but we haven’t gotten up to the hangar nearly as much as I had hoped, so we’ll have to see how far off my initial estimate of 18 months is. Should have a closer idea when we get into winter.

    • @lesdobbe2487
      @lesdobbe2487 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@s-21project92 Is the 500 hour 250 hrs each or 500 of time on the plane? I'm assuming it's 500 hrs of time on the plane single and/or both counted as a single hour.

    • @s-21project92
      @s-21project92  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s 500 both of us working, so technically 1,000 man-hours. And those hours include time researching. Really it’s the hours we’ve been at the hangar minus visitors and lunch breaks. There have several instances of her standing around waiting on me to finish something that only one person can do. Two people sure helps when it comes to prep, riveting, and moving things around.
