Try riding a bus sometime in the middle of summer, there are people on there that smell so bad of BO it'll make your eyes tear up. The stinch is embedded in your nose for hours!
Most people smoked back then. You don't smell it when you smoke. I don't remember being aware as a kid that adults stunk. It was everywhere. In hospitals, on planes & trains, in cars, everywhere.
Clark Gable was one to talk, he was known for very bad breath. Mostly attributed to false teeth and smoking. Lot of folks these days don't understand how prevalent smoking indoors was up until the 1980s. Open a door to a bar and you might think it was on fire from all the smoke that came out. I lived in Italy and the cigarettes I think mostly came from Egypt and they were very strong. I would come home after a night on the town, strip and toss my clothes in the washing machine. If I put them in the hamper, they would still stink up the place.
After your morning shower, when you eat water-logged fruits such as cantaloupe, honeydews, etc., (& nothing else), then work-out a bit later, your body scent is surprisingly pleasant. Don't believe me? Just try it...
I had a professor in college tell someone not to come back to her classroom without bathing. She waited while they left. Evidently, they figured out who they were. I thought at the time, maybe they are homeless. I never turned around to look. The whole thing was uncomfortable. I was seated in the front row.
Certain foods can also alter a person's body smells. Garlic, wine, asparagus and many other foods can alter the body's pH. Also, back then, air freshners and heavily scented detergents and deodorants were not as common as in today's market.
It shouldn’t be surprising that these actors had these issues. It still exists with actors in Hollywood today. Remember that back then these actors had to hide a great deal.
Hygiene standards are different around the world. Not every stench is correlated with mental illness or rudeness. Foreign actors imported to star in U.S. movies are sometimes "problematic" regarding to odor.
When the summer Olympics were in Atlanta the city had billboards reminding people how hot and humid it is there, encouraging the Europeans to use deodorant 😂😂
You gotta love the low key Hollywood style of of actors saying that their co-stars were suffering from a high degree of swamp @ss , "They were very professional and tremendous to work with on the set. However they were quite the naturalist when it came too their personal hygiene".
I've been around it to know that make up has very little odor and doesn't get funky smelling under hot lights. Also, there's a huge difference between the smell of hairspray and horrible BO from lack of bathing. I've been around people who didn't bathe regularly and or didn't use deodorant and let me tell you, I'll GLADLY take the strong smell of hairspray or perfumes etc., over nasty unclean pits, ass and crotch, ANY DAY! And there is also a difference between the smell of clean sweat and funky unbathed sweat as well.

@naradaian I definitely was not. However, I just find it strange that he wanted to live "all natural", but regularly tripped on unnatural, man-made chemicals.
People in general are wacky and out of balance I would say actors fall into this category pretty frequently and its inconsiderate to stink around people you work with and yes I am sure they all knew they reeked I would never work with anyone who were to lazy to bath
I had a male friend who smelled bad even after showering and putting on deodorant. People complained. It turned out that he had mild gout which caused the odor. It wasn't his fault. It was later treated.
I don't understand that. I used to suffer from major gout (now treated). It's an arthritic condition caused by a buildup of uric acid in joints (mainly toes, knees, ankles etc). It doesn't make you smelly. It certainly didn't cause any body odours issues for me. I'm a bit of a clean freak and would've been mortified if that was the case.
You are lucky it didn't affect you that way. My poor friend smelled like urine, and he actually had tiny crystals of uric acid stuck to his armpit hairs. He had to completely change his diet including eliminating red meat and certain vegetables. They also gave him a medication to take. After awhile, his body chemistry changed and the body odor was greatly reduced. True story!
@@melissapinol7279 That's fascinating. I used to have incredible pain due to gout. I probably did everything wrong diet and alcohol-wise (still do) but now I take a simple pill every day and haven't had it for over eight years.

Vivien Leigh was fanatical about being clean including a routine for placing her clothes under a special cover ready to be cleaned, she was also very particular about her white gloves, ensuring they were immaculate and changed them several times a day. In all the research I’ve done and the biographies I’ve read I have never heard of any person commenting on her personal care. Obviously she did suffer from severe depression therefore it is unforgivable that she is included in this video!
I just posted about Vivien Leigh. Thank you. When I read what they said I became infuriated that they would say such a fallacy. I too read much about her and I was shocked. It's bothered me that such garbage would be said about her. THANK YOU❤
It should have been noted that it was normal for people to bathe once or twice a week especially until the 1950's when most people didn't have running water, let alone hot water, and they washed their clothes when they got dirty. Hotels didn't have private bathrooms. It was a different time and it wasn't uncommon to meet people with unappealing personal odor which was probably less unappealing to people from their own "tribe." The people who were complaining probably didn't smell so good themselves.
Anyone who’s been on or even near a film set will tell you how unbearably hot it can get. Add makeup, elaborate costumes and wigs to the mix and anyone would reek after 12 hours or more. Hygiene would be a top priority, you would think. Joan Crawford showered constantly and insisted her sets be refrigerated, not so much for comfort or limiting sweating, but to keep her makeup fresh.

He replied he had been living at his girlfriend's place and had no clean clothes but had the next three days off and was going to clean up, do laundry, and clean his apartment. Three days later I walked into the locker room, and it stank, I had to go around two corners to get to the lockers and there he was. That evening at quitting time I noticed he wasn't in the locker room. Later I asked a coworker that seemed to know everything going on at the resort about him. They fired stinky shortly after I told him he stank. The guy had been sleeping on the streets of Denver for three days shooting heroin.
@@KourtneeMonroe No, I didn't help him lose his job. I wasn't a supervisor that could fire him. I didn't know he spent three days destroying his life with heroin or whatever. To be fair in the Veronica Lake hair case, many women didn't wash their hair daily as we do now. They would go for a wash and a set once a week at the beauty parlour.
You could have added Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Tallulah Bankhead and Lupe Velez who were also Notorious Non-Bathers. I was very surprised to see Joan Fontaine on this dubious list. A lot of these actors were born and grew up when regular bathing / hot n cold plumbing wasnt accessible, it was not an uncommon habit to take a bath once a week, usually on Saturday night. One would wash one's pits and privates (maybe) during the week. Also, women had a dubious habit of applying another sprinkle of body talcum and face powder. We take heaps for granted these days, especially in North America. What would we do in the Developing World and Tropical climates...? Im glad some commentators made to correlation between excessive Smoking and the body odor. Im not surprised that many stars stunk to high-heaven after four or five packs of unfiltered schmokes.
Several of these people had the right idea of avoiding toxic chemicals and eating natural/organic foods; unfortunately, the naturalist ones didn't think of using natural soap and shampoo, daily. The natural body oils that some were afraid of washing off, could be replaced with essential oils. They even had those, back then. They chose to be dirty and funky.
Yes, if you're going to be working with others in close proximity then these "naturalists" need to use deodorant or cologne/perfume out of common courtesy.

Perhaps those people are poor and can't afford your stinky hygiene products.

I am sure that the stench of cigarette smoke didn’t help either.

Most people smoked back then. You don't smell it when you smoke. I don't remember being aware as a kid that adults stunk. It was everywhere. In hospitals, on planes & trains, in cars, everywhere.
@@loritracy1385 My parents both smoked, and I told my mother her breath stank.
I thank God most places are smoke free now
Clark Gable was one to talk, he was known for very bad breath.
I knew people who were such heavy smokers that the front doors of their homes stank from the smoke. It got into the wood.
So true. I used to have to put all my clothes into another room before going to bed after a big night out. Even then I could still smell them.

After your morning shower, when you eat water-logged fruits such as cantaloupe, honeydews, etc., (& nothing else), then work-out a bit later, your body scent is surprisingly pleasant.

I never knew any of these people stunk so bad. You would never know it in their movies scenes. Talk about professionalism! LHM
Non servono "prodotti " per l'igiene. Acqua e sapone di Marsiglia +deodorante e si è a posto.
Curry makes you stink if you eat enough of it.
Oh, asparagus smells foul after you've eaten it.

It should have been noted that it was normal for people to bathe once or twice a week especially until the 1950's when most people didn't have running water, let alone hot water, and they washed their clothes when they got dirty. Hotels didn't have private bathrooms. It was a different time and it wasn't uncommon to meet people with unappealing personal odor which was probably less unappealing to people from their own "tribe."
The people who were complaining probably didn't smell so good themselves.

I never had a problem letting people know they smelled bad.
I walked into a ski resort employee locker room and a coworker was there and he smelled a bit and very politely told him. He replied he had been living at his girlfriend's place and had no clean clothes but had the next three days off and was going to clean up, do laundry, and clean his apartment.
Three days later I walked into the locker room, and it stank, I had to go around two corners to get to the lockers and there he was.
He smelled so bad I couldn't stand it and I used to work around cattle.
I got right in his face and told him he stank, bad. I can't recall his reply.
That evening at quitting time I noticed he wasn't in the locker room.

To be fair in the Veronica Lake hair case, many women didn't wash their hair daily as we do now. They would go for a wash and a set once a week at the beauty parlour.
Veronica Lake's favorite perfume was 'Lily of the Alley".
This is true. There's no way my grandmother could have washed her hair daily - they didn't have an indoor bathroom.

You still have to smell yourself.
Fontaine looks clean enough to me.
When Marilyn was sick, she laid in bed for days and didn't bathe.
Why would JFK want to be with Marilyn Monroe if she sticks ?
Several of these people had the right idea of avoiding toxic chemicals and eating natural/organic foods; unfortunately, the naturalist ones didn't think of using natural soap and shampoo, daily.
The natural body oils that some were afraid of washing off, could be replaced with essential oils. They even had those, back then.
They chose to be dirty and funky.
