I'm not a small engine mechanic but, I do fix garden equipment as a hobby. My main "pocket change" are from maintenance. Either, the "customers" have no time, no tools OR interest in maintenance. Hey ! If you have money to throw away, I'm much obliged to accept it.

I fixed a Husqvarna last year, the owner decided to force the issue and destroyed the cable mounts in the plastic shroud that holds all the controls. The hexagon shaft for the friction wheel was dry as a bone, as I find on 90% of snow blowers that have never been maintained. The owner ended up with a bigger bill because of lack of maintenance. This happends often. Pay me now, or pay me more later seems to apply here. Good video friend. I always enjoy your videos. I just wish more snowblower owners would watch your videos.

That's exactly what i discovered yesterday when i did my oil change! The lever was really hard to move. So now I know how to fix this problem, even though I've never been in "the belly of the beast" (new owner of a 2nd hand sb) . And like G.I.Joe always said back in the 80s: So now we know. And knowing is half the battle! Thanks Don!

Very useful advice. I have this same Toro model, and it has worked very well. In the West, we dont have the same dampness and salt issues as in the East, but your advice is good for any climate. I got my machine used. New ones are so expensive I dont k now why people would ignore such simple maintenance. In my opinion, the owners manual could be better detailed on maintenance info. Thanks

I encountered a slightly different scenario with the heck shaft an older MTD machine I was working on. The disc was moving but it was sluggish due to old grease. My symptoms if I had moved to reverse one from any of the forward gears it would continue to go forward. Glad I looked at what was happening when I took the belly pan off. This MTD has a shift rod instead of the adjustable cable they currently use.

I have a Cub cadet X2 going on it’s 3rd season here. It has the steering assist. Last year the assist started to not work to good. I thought it might be cause the snow was deep and it might have built up ice which might have caused a problem. While getting it ready for winter I noticed it won’t turn at all. I operated the handles and was able to see the clip rise and fall and the gears turn while tipped up.
    Any suggestions?
