How to Fix a Snowblower That Doesn't Shift Properly

  • Step by Step!
    Today we'll be working on a YardWorks snowblower that drives forward when shifted into reverse.
    In today's video I'll be showing you how to properly adjust the "Speed Control Lever" it's a simple adjustment that doesn't require many tools.
    I'll even show you what tools to use so you can make this adjustment by yourself!
    With a solid shift linkage, you'll need to either extend or decrease the overall length of the shift rod. Whereas with a cable, you'll need to either increase or decrease the cables tension on the shift arm.
    I'll show you how to do this on newer MTD snow blowers, as well as an older Poulan Pro / Husqvarna model.

    One thing I failed to mention in the video is that this adjustment can also be made if you notice your snowblower drives too fast in the F1 gear position. By adjusting the speed select lever linkage or cable, you can bring the friction disc closer to the center of the friction plate, which will thus reduce speed in Forward 1st gear.
    Additionally, a note on the 3 holes in that bracket; the older MTD machines only have 1 cable Z bend hole, while the newer ones have 3 to give you additional adjustability. It is generally not required to change the hole the cable goes into, but I assume they make the triangle plate with 3 holes now to make up for differences in cable length you may get from the manufacturer.

    • @danielrobert7181
      @danielrobert7181 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good video with an additional comment that's a real bonus. I do think those 3 holes in the plate result from that part being used on various models with different handles' lenghts. Regards !

      Love the videos! You would think they would want to put the cable in the top hole so it doesn't bind up on the "adjustable plate".

    Thanks for the crescent wrench and clamp trick. I will be adjusting my eight year old Huskee (by MTD) soon. I noticed my R1 was veeery slow, it wasn't slipping or going forward, it just barely crawled backwards. I got used to running my machine on light snow in F2 and wet snow in F1. I only use F3 to jog it back to the car port. I just assumed I was getting too fat and old and I could not match my walking pace to keep up with speeds F4, F5 and F6.
    This video also showed me that I should change how I park my snowblower. I always back it up in R2 to park, with the bucket pointing toward the driveway ready to go. Thus I got in the habit of leaving the snowblower all year long in R2. This keeps the shift cable at the highest tension, all the time. I will remember to park my snowblower in F6 from now on!

    Excellent vid! The friction disc is a simple mechanism, but most people need a how-to like this.
    I adjusted my friction disc (on the shaft) so that my "F1" position is slower than a dead turtle Lol. JUST off the center of the drive plate.
    You sacrifice top end "F6" speed, but who wants to run behind the machine?
    But the real benefit is the faster reverse speeds. Not by a whole lot, but noticeable.

    Need some advice on my craftsman 9/28, 247.88190 drive speed adjustment . I picked this up used and it had a lot of problems that I have fixed however my pivot bracket is at its max adjustment. I finally was able to get #1 reverse to work and in #6 forward the cable has slack. The piviot bracket only has 1 hole for the cable end and I have seen many of these that have 3 holes so I am thinging about drilling a second hole below the original hole for the cable which should take up the extra slack. Maybe the cable has stretched? Also the cables zig zag fitting is between the two plates and all the diagrams, pictures I see show it goes into the hole from the outside to the inside which will keep the cable from rubbing on the metal. This has been a much bigger project than I anticipated with sheared pins and frozen auger blades. Thanks for all the great, informative videos!

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I'm honestly not sure why they don't do it, these cables snap ALL the time! The drive and auger cable don't snap as much, usually the auger one snaps at the spring near the impeller idler arm. A slightly thicker cable would prevent the speed select cable from breaking though, although it wouldn't prevent the Z bend from breaking. Thanks for watching!

    I picked up a 9/28, (247.88190 a older model) that wouldn't go into reverse. The piviot bracket only has 1 hole for the cable end, and was adjusted to the max. I ended up drilling a hole below the the existing and now I have all the gears. Now I think that I will remove the bracket and bevel the inside of it so the cable will not rub on a "sharp" edge although there is no sign of abrasion on the outer cable casing, yet.

These get chewed up when the speed lever tooth pops out out if position. I find these to be a bad design since the whole design has no adjustment to made the lever fit better in the notch. Years ago these were all metal. What is your opinion about these issues and would you suggest a good model of 2 stage snowblower?

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No but same principle, lengthen the rod and it moves the friction wheel further one way, shorten it and it goes the other. If you want, you can flip up your snowblower and remove the access panel to see which way it moves, then you can properly adjust the rod and get it close to where you want it, having 1st gear on one side of the friction plate, and reverse on the other side so it spins the opposite direction.
