    Once red hot, quench it with ice water. Works every time . The heat expanded the metal, and then the cold shrinks it, breaking the bond of the rust

      But it might change the metal as if you were forging it, changing its properties, I think, or wouldn't it? Which may be irrelevant or may not.

    I had a similar experience with a siezed shaft and pulley. Used an air impact hammer - less mushrooming of shaft and more localized impact. Just an FYI.

    Sometimes drilling a hole into/through the shaft then heating it and letting it cool will allow the shaft to shrink enough to come out too. Kind of like welding on an internal bearing race to shrink it.
    Love the tenacity you showed in getting that shaft out.

    I deal with this kind of shit all the time on heavy equipment. Either heat it red hot and shock it with water, or run a weld bead down one side of the shaft housing, which expands just the metal on one side and breaks the rust bond. Only works if the shaft/pin is in thinner material, exactly like that situation.
    Also, you should get yourself an air hammer. Lots of smaller impacts does a better job knocking siezed pins loose than a couple big hits with a sledge. Take a drill bit and make a divot in the middle of the shaft to keep the air hammer bit from walking too much.

    Been there and done that also Dony actually built up at least an inch on the forearm the first year. Now at EP we use the Induction Innovations Venom Mini Ductor heat gun with proper coil assembly to heat the outer metal. There are times when we water quench the heated metal to shock the rust loose. Jake and i both think the Induction Heat Guns are not only the safest and most effective tool to use for this work but also consider it the number one tool in our shop which eliminates issues with seized nuts and bolts.

  • @BXDT99
    @BXDT99 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can’t let the shaft inside get red hot because it also expands with the housing, heat until the outer housing is red only and it “should😅” be easier to free. In theory the outer housing expands away from the shaft.

    If the shaft is soft enough to drill into, drill it well below the surface.
    When you go to knock it out the shaft has less thermal mass, the punch cant slip and youre almost pulling it out instead of applying all your force to the end.

    If you’re stuck item will fit in a pail of cold water just drop it in. I’m 73 and an old welding shop taught me this trick when I was in my teens.

  • @tazmun
    @tazmun ปีที่แล้ว

    Not gonna say he did anything wrong because he didn’t. However, in an alternate approach I learned working on heavy equipment from my boss, on semi trailers, is in this scenario, make a narrow strip on the outside pipe lengthwise with the shaft hot versus heating the entire area. Try to avoid heating the shaft. In this manner you can expand the outside pipe sometimes while leaving the inner shaft the same size. Then of course there is the old put it in ice after you’re done heating it shock emergency contraction trick! The bad thing about snowblowers is those shafts every damn one of them in the machine is the softest steel I’ve ever seen. One hammer blow without a brass drift and it’s completely mushroomed and you have an emergency problem. I have never owned a decent hydraulic press but man oh man I wish I did.
