I think the most astonishing part is that any Chinese today, who can read could still read those 2000 years old wooden chips.
@Cjszila the thing is so called traditional Chinese is just a formal written language used for officials, while simplified Chinese has been around for hundreds of years used by the civilians. So that means in China mainland, any middle school graduates could basically read both.
What I meant is in ancient times. Now mainland China use simplified Chinese, officials or not.

I lived in China for almost ten years. I have walked the Eastern end of the Great Wall and the Western end. It is an incredible sight and feeling! I traveled along the Silk Road and the Great Wall around Yumen.

Really you have to give respect to the Chinese and there history, an ancient people who's rich warrior culture goes back thousands of years even before christ, an amazing achievement that culture has left. They should and must be proud of there history regardless of politics what an impressive culture hats off to China......

There is a Chinese saying story about "uncle Yu moves mountain" a children story about teaching determination can complete a task even if it takes generations to do it.
This is one of the best programs about China and the great wall that I've ever seen it's absolutely outstanding

I went to the desert section of the wall with my father in 2019, we spent 3 hours walking around the wall 20:11 trying to find artifacts, eventually we found an arrow head made of stone, ( it has a very distinctive triangular shape around 1 inch long, a quarter inch wide). Imagining ancient Chinese and Mongolian had been fighting in the exact same wasteland thousands of years ago just makes you tremble and amazed by how human civilization has comes throughout the history.
It's probably going be used again in the future 🥺

Gotta shout out to camera and director on the wide shot of the terra cotta warriors scene: Have read about them and seen stills-but that wide establishing shot blew my mind. Knew they were unique and the site was “epic”. But holy Toledo and WOW! They ARE a whole freaking army…! Goosebumps. Go, Nat Geo.
I had the same feeling - thought I had an idea of the site from pictures, and I've even seen a few of them in a museum exhibit that traveled to the US (including life sized horses and chariots), but that wide shot was AMAZING. The living people circling the site were like ants...

Actually, the terra-cotta warriors were made based on real people, horses, and chariots, and even the size is almost the same. And what he said is that the expressions of each warrior are different, if you understand the details of this period of history, you will understand that this should be the earliest single-line accountability system in the world. It is possible to trace the person who made it according to the corresponding symbols on each pottery figure. If there is a production error, it will be either redone, or the person may face punishment or even death.
What's been excavated thus far is only fraction of what's still unexcavated!!

@@benoitbergeron8858 yes, they were actually the first ones to establish stable oceanic trade routes...their issue was that the later empires were extremely xenophobic, and thus decided to close the borders and cease any contact with anyone from outside china ( although they kept trading in african slaves, but unlike White people, they would demand that all black male slaves would be castrated, to prevent having any of them defile chinese women and taint their genes)...that slowed down their technological progress tremendously...if not for that, it might've been them, and not us whites, to create the most advanced society in history so far.

Amazing! One of the best documentaries I've seen about the Great Wall of China. How fascinating is that they had meticulous instructions and literature for soldiers and commanders. This shows how highly educated they were over 2000 years ago! I'm just enchanted by this whole documentary.

I am one of the lucky one... I have visited all these locations mentioned in this video multiple times, even stayed over night in one of the watch towers in Jinshanling. Jinshanling/Simatai section of the Great Wall is so magnificent - must visit!

I remember going to China and walking part of the Great Wall, It is mind blowing to see it stretch endlessly across the ridgeline of the mountains.
I am extremely impressed with the language ability of the lady in red. Besides her fluency in English, her Chinese language ability is far beyond regular people in China. She is able to read the ancient Chinese text which is fairly rare in today's China. She must be a successful academic herself.

You misled the context. The Chinese symbols are almost similar to what they are using today (do more research about their symbols). It means the Chinese have continued their civilization for thousands of years, their civilization is nearly non-interrupted.

Qin Shi Huang didn’t just build the Great Wall and leave behind terracotta warriors, he standardised language, script, scales and currency.
Edit: why are so many westerners in the comments blabbering about the great wall death toll in ancient china? every single chinese child knows about it and we even have stories and legends of the peasants who suffered and died building the great wall. we respect them. why are white people getting on their moral high horse again? maybe you'll have space to sound so condescending if the roman empire didn't use slaves AND if your dutch, belgium, british, american ancestors didn't just have slavery a few hundred years ago and are still downplaying it today.
great wall predate Qin, Qin only had the wall standardized like much of his empire...

You could make a solid case that Qin She Huang Di is the most impressive figure in history based on his many accomplishments and the time when he lived. From producing the first unified China to the Great Wall to his monumental burial.

He was also the first emperor to standardize writing, measurements, and currency for all of China. Before him, there were many writing systems in place and the currency was madness since so many different countries had been formed and got abolished by other states(I think around 60 or 70 kings had ruled over different parts of China for over 100 years). He was one of the most important ancient figures for 1/5 of the population on earth. You can safely say he was one of the few people that truly change humanity before modern days.

The whole wall is bodies of those who lost their lives building it packed with dirt and whatever else they used to fill it. That’s a lot of bodies even if they are spread out, probably over 1k in total.

What a great storyline! It makes one appreciate the wisdom of ancient Chinese! The Great Wall of China is a remarkable structure. But the other stories regarding the older walls and how they were made, and how they signaled is absolutely amazing story! I hope there are more stories like this from China!

It's interesting that while Asian learnt about all major world empires, westerners only know about Roman empire. I was surprised that a youtuber from Canada said he never knew ancient civilization Mohenjo Daro existed before as he never learn about it in school, and was surprised we Asian knew about it.

People have been building walls forever. It doesn't take a genius to build one.
Building a wall takes an architectural genius? 2200 years ago The Greeks were building beautiful temples and carving gorgeous statues that would be challenging to do today. Same with the Romans. So they must have been beyond genius.
This is a great new way to analyze the Great Wall-- there's still so much to learn about it. About the Terra Cotta Warriors of Qin, I was thinking that perhaps the reason each warrior is unique is because they took impressions of the faces of his actual warriors, to immortalize them, as well. To honor them. ??

I have never seen the Pyramids or other seven wonders of the World, but ive been on the Great Wall at Mutianyu , where the Great Wall has been preserved since he was build...and I gotta say...its astonishing !.. you feel so small, but at the samevtime so big being there and thinking how many battles that wall witnessed!? I believe The Great Wall must be in everyones bucket list!

The three sided arrows they referenced they found, is a very old technique to arrows. It is used in bayonets (equipped to rifles.) It completely prevents any healing or attempts to stop bleeding because of the three sides.

I went to JinShanLing and SiMaTai several times in the 90's, the last time being about 2002. It was not touristy way back then whereas Badaling near Beijing was just overcrowded with tourists. The views are definitely spectacular and the wall was broken in many places and also dangerous in others like one spot called "The Eagles Nest". Well worth a visit.

We rode our bikes there from Beida. We spent the night camping on the wall but not without first having to hide from the locals who were chasing us. This sort of behaviour was already suspicious back in the 90's.
That was amazing watching the whole documentary, I would the every part as it was very engaging and knowledgeable, and how beautiful and amazing 🇨🇳 wall is just fascinating

The mountain section of the Wall must be the greatest engineering feat humans ever built. It is truly astounding how humans back then could build something like that, when with todays technology and calculations it would still be an amazing accomplishment
Many civilizations of old were far better in such endeavors than we are. Same goes for many types of simple machines and wood work. And it shouldn't be a suprise since they relied on such technology for their very survival and professions were life long affairs where incompetence meant starvation. Now imagine your motivation level to excel at what you do under those circumstances.

The wall was built by peasants, slaves, criminals, and other people that the emperor decided to punish. Soldiers were involved in building the wall and in managing the workers as well. It is estimated that millions of people worked on the wall over the course of over 1000 years

Uh.. that is just an understatement. Lots of people lost their lives building it and many of them were part of the wall. Meaning they were just buried in the wall when they didn't make it while working on it.

China's history is really cool. Modern China is actually only 75 to 80 years old. Spent 3 yrs there and got to learn so much about it. Really intriguing.

It would be amazing to dig and study, in sections, the great wall, expose its secrets then rebuild the great wall using the ancient traditional techniques to restore it. Restore it for generations to come
What a great storyline..interesting...love it
I hiked along the Great Wall for 5 days and 4 nights with my mate some 20 years ago. We climbed through the half-collapsed walls on the steep ridge, camping inside the watchtowers in the night, watching the sunrise and sunset every morning and dawn.
We passed some of the most 'dangerous' parts of the great wall, where the whole wall is so narrow that only 2 people can walk side by side, or where the rise of each step is half a meter high (extremely steep following the natural ground). Exactly as the documentary pointed out, the great wall was built to the natural barrier and made it impossible - or at least as they planed - to be invaded.
What really amazed me was that the Chinese have used their advanced technology and administrative capability to build something for defensive, for the country and people, instead of invading others.
The theory of Chinese-threat is one of the biggest jokes ever produced - at least from the historical point of view.

Many underestimate the breadth and scope of this construction. To really appreciate the enormity of this accomplishment, you must take into account that all of this ambitiously engineered structure was achieved & erected sans computers, *sans* 3-D mapping and **sans** satellite imagery from space..
This feat was made possible only by the diligence, the maths and the imaginations of that time..
