Today Kelsey and I talk about a frequently asked question: What are the best toys for my autistic child? We go into some great toys as well as strategic ways to structure play to build joint attention as well as language and social skills.
As always, start with assessment. Play and social skills are built-in pieces of our digital assessment, but you don't have to stop there. A great way to assess your child is through observation. What kinds of leisure activities bring them joy? What activities are they drawn to? Dumping? Sorting? Peekaboo? You can pick toys and tailor joint activities to match up with these already preferred methods of play to make them engaging and language rich. Toys like potato heads, modified shoebox games, inset puzzles, magna doodles, and fake food are ones that you can make more fun with adult involvement.

What age? A lot of my videos and courses work for kids of all ages who are not conversational. If they are conversational, that is not my area of expertise!

Hi, what a great and informative video. I have a 3 year old nephew who has nonverbal autism. He is a sensory seeker.. tip toes, doesn't enjoy clothing, and like to bite balloons, jump, etc. Is there anything you can recommend to meet his sensory needs? Thank you!

I have a 21 month old who meets the criteria for autism now. He has a stim that hes doing a lot, Alot. More often than not he wants to almost "hump the floor" with something visually happening in his face, either flashing lights or colorful liquid timers or anything with lots of bright colors and he wants to stare at it while hes flexing his calves and squirming on the floor. Its very difficult to understand why, I do not know the reason he is doing this, i do not know how to help him. Any suggestions?

Great video. Thanks so much. My daughter's problem is when trying to play with her 4 year old autistic son, little sister always wants to be in the middle of things. She is 18 months and very social. Are there some strategies that she can use to keep her entertained while working with brother.

Hey there, I'm a former preschool teacher. I think it would actually be really good to involve the siblings in activities they both can equally do together. I also think it's important that your daughter has a talk with her daughter and explains that her brother needs extra help with tasks sometimes, and that's completely okay. "A manual for Marco" by Abdullah Shaila is a children's book that is written from the point of view of an 8 year-old girl learning how to deal with her brother who is on the autism spectrum. I think it would be a great book to have in the household.

Hey there, I'm a former preschool teacher! I think your child would really benefit from a dedicated and controlled window of time to get their crazies out. There's lots of movement break videos u can find on TH-cam, I find "stand up sit down" and Laurie Berkners videos to be helpful. I really recommend getting her some gross motor movement time outdoors too if possible. If this doesn't work I'd discuss with your pediatrician!

Oh! And sorry to keep bothering you. There's actually some puzzle toys that have doors that open and shut and she might really like something like that.

@@StarryNightxx agreed we have dedicated time for our son to get “his crazies out.” He’s very sensory seeking and likes to run back and forth and running into the couch. We allow him that time he needs and make it a safe space to do all he needs. We have noticed a difference.
