Its nice to see a fathers point of view. My Son is on the Spectrum . It started around two years of age. Ive been raising him since he was three years old (9 now ) As a single parent. I remember the nights I would rock him to sleep. I would tear up ( cry ) at times thinking how it would be nice to just hear my Sons voice. He would stare at me and touch my face. He wouldnt talk verbally but his eyes knew what to say. I'd talk to him while he slept and he'd smile. Raising my Autistic Son is a Blessing. I wouldnt change a thing. Hes had my full attention and its made a difference. My son isnt on meds , is in regular classes, talks really well, comprehension is awesome, A/B Honor Roll, has friends and is The Light of My Life. Much Respect To All The Parents out there.

here I am searching for something to help me as a single father of a teenager with autism because I feel like im at my wits end. I am starting to get so depressed especially during this lockdown caused by Covid 19. My wife left when my son was 4 years old and I have been winging it ever since that day. I dont know what to do anymore and I feel like I am the only single father in the world.

All people are individuals as are Autistic people. Know thyself. Learn about what co-morbitities are and recognize, these are not Autism itself. Stay positive. Conformity is not about being Autistic, it's about fear of difference.

My 3 yr old grandson is autistic. His father is not in the picture at all, which is good bc he was very abusive to my daughter. I am the man in my grandson's life. I absolutely love my grandson, he is my world. It doesn't bother me that he's autistic, it helps explain a lot of his characteristics. I love him for who he is and how he is. Unfortunately, I hardly get to see him due to my daughter lives in another state with him and bc of covid it has made seeing them almost impossible.

My wife asked me to take over primary care when our son was 6. I then went through public health for diagnoses, ndis for therapy funding. Now, hes 12. Doing so very well. Dsm-2 so all social stuff really. Cant remember his last meltdown, probably about a year ago. My journey was tough alongside all this. Cptsd and self medicating with alcohol. Sober now 14 months and a much better dad. Just finishing up an Individual Support worker cert 3 and hoping to work with kids like my son. Turns out being a carer is something im actually good at, especially for our young blokes. Im scared as hell though but also trust myself to be the best i can be as a dad and support worker. All these dads deserve a big hearty hug. Good onya fullas 💪🔥🙏

I clicked on this video thinking it was about autistic fathers not fathers with autistic children, but it was still interesting. I never asked my dad what it was like for him when I got the diagnosis, because I was already an adult when it happened...I think it put some behaviour of his dad (which I suspect was probably autistic as well) in perspective.
it'S kinda fun to see that several dads are working in highly specialised jobs and stuff like IT...which have a higher rate of autistic people compared to the general population . wouldn't be surprised if some of the dads weren't somewhere on the spectrum as well.

  • @GamerGirlEmily1
    @GamerGirlEmily1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

This is what makes me frustrated Autism is not really a problem it just means the people fuelled by another program if you will.
I think the problem is the focus on "they cant communicate properly" I mean yeah by the standards others have on what communication is that's true but I mean Animals don't speak they communicate in a different way we don't expect them to "talk" and communicate like neurotypical people and we accept that LOL and autistic people are mostly wired to be amazing at technology so there are so many apps and such to help out with communication nowdays.
Because we don't meet the social standards of the masses or function like others do it automatically becomes that we are a problem.
I mean there are times when Autism can be annoying but almost every person had a mental illness and such nowadays there are reasons for lots of people not to function as regular adults.
Also many aspies have high IQ and are very smart. Yes we are challenged when it comes to physical contact but it is not a survival skill to hug or kiss people. It's not needed to survive. Why does a child need to want to be affectionate? I think it's usually for the other people's needs that they want them to be that way. Idk get a pet to substitute the affection you need but people don't need to be touchy and love hugging it's fine.
As they say if you want the Autism symptoms to be gone put us in our rooms and close the door lol
I think all we want in the end is to be accepted how we are and not be pushed to be like the neurotypical functioning.
    Problems solved

well i have 3 children with autisim two nonverbal severe and one moderate and verbal, all 3 of them love to cuddle and hug they will come up to me and sit on my lap and start hugging me,my now 8 year old verbal daughter who was non verbal until she was 4/5 had a good conversation with me last month i asked her how she felt when she wasnt able to communicate with me with her words and she said exactly this, mom when i couldnt talk to you and tell you what i wanted and how i felt my mind felt like i was going crazy and i felt really really sad and frustrated and not happy at all......so i cant agree with your opinion you cant compare your self to how other people feel everyone is different even people on the spectrum are different thats why its called autisim spectrum

One of the best videos made, regarding parents of those with special needs. We hear sooo much from moms of those with autism. It is wonderful to hear how dads handle it, what they find the most challenging, the most memorable/proud milestones, how important their partner is to them in all this, and just seeing them so invested and so involved. I hope these videos continue to be made. They are very insightful and just plain awesome to see how proud and in love they are with their child with special needs. Every one of them light up when they speak about seeing their child happy, and I think that’s all we want for our kids- to know they will be ok and they are happy individuals.

    Disability?
    Really?
The DSM 5 is grossly reliant on making it out that Autism is a disability.
Maybe to neuro-typical people it is because it's all you know and think you can fix an Autistic child.
Shame that the community surrounding Autism isn't more transparent with its presentation of what Autism is, to those who have the "condition".
Why am I so abrupt in what I say?
I am 40 and Autistic, I have 2 beautiful Autistic children and they are NOT disabled!

Technically pure worldly it's called a disability; at the same time we like to turn the negative into a positive and disability becomes ability! With God anything is possible. Not a scared little girl! Pple underestimate us and make us feel or look at us like we're stupid and don't know what we are talking about; hence non believers. We get exiled and get bullied a lot by adults and children other children. It's a special gift and power; hence disability becomes ability. It's a great thing! We have things we can do that's impossible for others to do. They can't cuz they don't have that gift. If they do, the so called normal ones will fail. They lose we win. God wins everytime!! :) We are different and don't really fit into societies standards and rules.

🥰🥰🥰🥰 that there is finally something put together regarding fathers. Anything out there seems to almost always be mom-centred. While that all fine, fathers absolutely NEED wht other fathers are going through or have been through.
These fathers are bang on correct about becoming a better person. Having a special needs child will make you or break you. Community is crucial. Now I need to go find one. Hubs and I have been at it alone for too long already. Our son is going to be a teenager this summer. We may need any and all help we can get.

Thank you all for being on our side. And thank you all for letting us know things will get better. I look forward to this journey . And I know I(we) can do it. Especially for our son. Have a wonderful day my friends. I thank you so much for the reassurance. I'm 100% positive we can do this. I know I can. I know we can

Those kids are so lucky to have caring fathers that treat them sensitively. I diagnosed with autism couple days ago as a 24 year old female and my dad is still very abusive and dont even treat me like an individual whenever I visit him but here is the thing I can’t unlove a person you know and i just found out that its one of the symptoms its just unfortunate the fact that they were all you needed them including early teenage years and they were never emotionally there and now they’re old and you can’t treat them like they treated you bc they’re old yup its a very odd feeling w.e i hope y’all learn how to live w it so much love❤

All these parents have similar experiences because they are committed and have been there for their children and their partners. This is not the same for everyone. Father's who do not accept that their child has a disability, act differently and their view and approach is much different and negative if I may say. That's why there is a high rate of divorce in families with a child with autism or any other developmental disabilities.

The only selfish thing you've really done is act like autism is some curse.
Autistic people have feelings too. Research online. Lots of autistic people have their own things to say.
Edit: Sorry, I skipped over the part where you said you had it too. Still, it's not selfish! You brought another life into this world. Who knows, he could save someone's life or change the world, or hell, just have a very happy life! Who knows?

My daughter is a single mother, we have been having my grandson evaluated and tested over the last year for Autism. It was confirmed two weeks ago that my grandson is Autistic. It has been challenging at times for my daughter and for me. We are trying to learn as much as we can, watch a lot of videos, and research as much as we can. I find that so many things he does or the way his brain works is very interesting and fascinating. I am also having to practice a lot of patience with my grandson as to sometimes he wants to be around me and sometimes he wants nothing to do with me. The hardest part is wondering how his relationship with me will be as he grows up.
