  • Are you concerned about a child with red flags for autism or a confirmed autism diagnosis who is not talking? A small percentage of those kids do not intentionally vocalize. No one talks until they learn to control their own voices. Becoming verbal as soon as possible is a positive predictor that a child will begin to learn to talk. Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP of teachmetotalk.com as she explains 7 highly practical treatment strategies for helping nonverbal children with autism find their voices.

    You're a great therapist. I wish more therapist had a focus and guidance in parent couching along with the speech therapy. My son suffered an Anoxic BI at 18 mos. old, then diagnosed with Autism and Apraxia ≈ year later. The journey of speech and language therapy has been cloudy and rather confusing to me as why my son is not verbally communicating and what I should be focusing on to help promote communication. Im tirning to show #403 rn.

    Is there an episode on behavioral stuggles (i.e
    communicating the concept of 'waiting' , redirecting pintching or biting to communicate to a form of nonverbaly l requesting what they need) . My child is in 2nd grade and I struggle with replacing these unwanted behaviors with appropriate ones.

    How do you reduce the stimming? Often the activity and the flow are interrupted by the child's abrupt stimming

    • @alexparedes1573
      @alexparedes1573 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Stimming should always be allowed, beginning to end, in my opinion. If there is something that naturally grabs their attention enough, use that. Otherwise, as a therapist, I believe we should not minimize their expressions.

      @@svetavinogradova4243 you make it clear that stimming is a problem for YOU. Imagine your parents training you to not tap your foot or click a pen when you’re nervous or excited. It’s quite literally not harming anyone, it’s just a problem for YOU because YOU don’t like hearing the constant tapping. You don’t need to train a child to stop comforting themselves. I get teaching replacement behaviors, but you speak of autistic people as if they are pets. Disgusting.

      I’m very late in this response. However, I have 2 autistic kids who are nonverbal and still learning how to talk. We are working with an Occupational therapist who has really helped our son focus during speech therapy. We noticed our older son would be so distracted by his sensory overload he could not focus on his speech therapy. It is not a matter of discipline rather a sensory need. His OT works on muscle massage, deep pressure massage and postural support. With these in place he is able to listen and participate in a 25 minute session non stop without having to stim. Remember stimming is to calm a sensory overload. The more the sensory piece is addressed, the more he can attend to his speech therapy.
