    hello I'm just a normal South Korean girl who lives in Seoul and I love BTS. I'm going to go Canada this summer as an international student.. and I don't know how to make friends in foriegn country. As you see my English is pretty bad...ㅠㅠ I just wonder the real popularity of BTS in Canada. Do Canada's high school girls know BTS? or do they don't like them? How many BTS fangirls are in a school usually? Are they a lot? Can you guys answer my question I'm very nervous...

      Hi! I'm also a high school student and I was born and raised in Canada. From my personal experience, BTS is actually really popular in my highschool! There are lots of highschool kpop fans in Canada but I think the main difference is that for most of them, you wouldn't know unless you asked. That being said, it depends on where you're planning to go. Canada is a great country for people of Asian descent (I'm not really one to say because I'm white but my friends experiences have been great). There are tons of clubs at most schools that you can join! For example, my school has an Asian culture club where they study languages, celebrations, etc. And a popular topic is Kpop! If you don't mind saying, where are you planning on going? Obviously I can only speak for my area and experience which is Ottawa, the capital. 💜

      Depends on where you are in Canada, Toronto/mississauga area there are a LOT I have met many fans in my high school they play kpop in the mornings sometimes as well, I'm not sure about many other areas but I have met people online from different areas of Canada

      Yeah. They are.
      I've seen them constantly on the papers there.
      And they were also really high on the charts in Billboard Canada.
      Also I remember I saw the huuuuge BB sign about BTS.
      So don't be nerveous honey!
      There are ARMYs everywhere in the world and Canada is definitely one of those places😉
      Cheer up!!
      Hwaiting!!

      I'm 23 and I can't say I personally know many ARMY where I am in Canada but even if people aren't fans of BTS they are still more than willing to listen and may enjoy a song or two. Everyone is honestly very friendly. There are a lot of oportunities in Canada to meet a diverse amount of people so I'm sure you'll have no trouble making new friends!

      i guess so
      like i knew him way before i got into BTS... i guess his name is the reason.. because when i searched them , his name stuck in my head the most and i could spot him instantly in any song and when i watch non kpop reaction videos i noticed that they remember his name the most

      0000 9999 Being famous in SK is very important to BTS. All of their members are Korean and that would make it very difficult for them to market outside of SK. Not financial wise but the members. As we all know Namjoon is the only one who speak English fluently, he's gonna have a hard time trying to translate and all that shit and the other members would surely struggle too.

  • @whoareyou8199

    I'ma clear some things up, as a Korean. I've always been into kpop idol genre since when I was in high school, and now I'm a 25year old adult. For a long time I observed the Kpop scene and I can tell you that general Korean public don't know all the idols because there are so many groups in the industry+because of stan culture. If by chance we get to stan idol group, we don't look back and we stop looking for other oppas. Most fans usually stan only one or at most two groups, and it is highly valued to stan them in a dedicated mode.That's why fanwars are so much intense and fierce among Korean fans. Even I don't know all the names of members in some internationally famous groups like Got7 and BlockB, Infinite, etc. I just know that the group exists. So I kinda understand those interviewees talking like that they don't know BTS. Also, Big 3's influence is pretty huge. And I mean it when I say PRETTY HUGE. They have their connections with Broadcasting stations and news platforms. It's hard to find negative news articles about Big3 artists, and when their artists did something wrong, the negative news articles go down from the list of Top News very quickly. Even the most smallest news like Big3 artist's fashion or selfies or instagram updates go to the main top article. Platforms like Naver are very favorable of them, and it is very important to be exposed via those platforms like Naver because people realize the existence of the artists through that. However, if BTS gets more exposures more common people will recognize them. I just wanted to tell you that the amount of knowledge shown by the interviewees in this video is not at all "small". If they know BTS exists, it is an indicator that they are pretty famous, though probably not "enormously popular". Thanks to the international armys, we reached to the level that they recognize their group name. Let's keep it up and make BTS so popular that each of the members are remembered by general public!

      +Anna Kou No problem! I just wanted to show people the proof that a lot of older fans exist in Korea too, since I saw some even Koreans were passing out misleading info. Also some were generalizing too much. A good example is still-existing Seotaeji fans, H.O.T fans, Buzz fans, and Sechskies fans! Those were 1st&2nd generation kpop idol fans, and you saw the successful Seotaeji concert where BTS went as performers! 99%of his fans are not teenagers, they are like in 20s~ 40s!

    • @whoareyou8199
      @whoareyou8199 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If someone says that there are no older kpop Korean fans, just rub Seotaeji or Sechskies's name on their face!! lol Their older-age fans are still strong, and Sechskies's new album song is now in top100 melon chart :)

    the only thing that sadness me is the fact that they think the first motive for us to like korean artists is because they are good looking. they don't think 'idol' are good singers and they end up being embarrassed when they said they know about them.
    When I was in Korea in 2012 Block B was already a 'big' thing for international fans but when I asked nobody knew about them. But look at them now! Especially Zico

      what even I don't think they're specifically prejudiced against BTS. When they point out their looks etc they don't mean "their looks is all they have, its the only reason they're popular" it's just that the korean society cares more about looks/beauty than the other societies. It's sad but it's a reality..

      but that's generally what idols were first and foremost marketed for... so i get where the prejudice comes from. their looks are a huge part of their image as an idol. i mean the definition of the word idol is definitely changing now with music becoming more and more important and center focused, but it still is a huge part of their appeal.

    • @Sylbiah
      @Sylbiah 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Exactly what I meant. I was not talking specifically about BTS. They care too much about looks in general. They do not value their country enough (and this happens with every country) to think someone may like them just because they are good.
      More: if a guy or a guy group are good looking they think they are not talent and they end up being ignore and not taken seriously . But if a girl ou a girl group are good looking (and act cute), they can even sing bad.... they don't care.

    The lessons from this video:
    1. Accept the fact that not all people will like what you like. So I-armys don't be hurt, there are K-armys out there who love and support them 100%. Armys should be a class act. Support the boys because you know why you love them. They don't need to be recognized/appreciated by other people for you to like them.
    2. There are prejudice in this world. Even if they haven't heard/seen anything, they will already judge or they will have something to say.
    3. Be thankful that the boys are known globally not because of their looks but because of their talent. There is still hope in this world.
    4. The sad thing is that they don't know the impact of BTS being known globally. They are breaking barriers. They are opening gates globally. This is more than just another KPOP or idol. It's more of global unity; being open to others' culture. The diversity of the global music industry has started. Most of the music from other countries that were known globally are one hit wonders, but BTS has outdone this. They release record after record and become more and more popular.
    RM: Haters gonna hate. Players gonna play. Live a life man. Good luck.

I came into this group because of their motivation lyrics to me, that raised me up, hold my hand like saying " lets do it together. we can. " and knowing that they reached the billboard for the first time and even went to BBMAs and AMAs teared me. My boys have already got everyone attention all over the world. those past that only they think will just be as a dream back then, now come across the reality. And they still being the same bts i used to know and still i know.

      i agree with you, but i have to admit i do find i-armys (and international kpop fans in general) to be rather annoying. like i'm sorry but so many i-armys are SO disrepsectful, not only towards koreans but asians in general? i stan bts, but as you said yourself i stan them because i like them. not because i care about them having debutes in america. like OF COURSE i'm happy for their success, i'm so proud of my babies but i HATE when i-armys only bring up bts because of their western recognition, as if that's the only thing that matters? there's so many other kpop groups who deserve so much respect but just because they aren't famous in america and white people don't know them it's like they're just trash?
      i don't know im really conflicted. i love that the boys are breaking barriers but i hate the racism and cultural ignorance that follows with it. like i really find it annoying seeing them being interviewed by ignorant americans, having racist journalists screaming at them. and then i haven't even mentioned all the white koreaboos who thinks all asians are kpop idols and that kpop is ONLY about bts bc their culturally ignorant ass don't know anything about korean/asian culture or kpop unless they have an american debut. :///
      sorry for ranting. i kind of derailed from the discussion here. i guess i've just met a lot of annoying white armys, i usually just interact with asian armys because they usually don't fetishize and disrespect my people/culture

People in other countries probably love them, but I barely pay any attention to their personal lives, awards, and appearances because they just don't interest me. I'll still hear their songs on the radio and sing after hearing it so many times, but that's about it.
    As for BTS, they're probably the first idol group I've ever really paid attention to in general. I do enjoy other K-Pop groups such as Big Bang, SNSD, Sistar, Shinee, EXO, and Super Junior because they were the ones that first introduced me to this genre. But BTS seems to be the group that got me hooked and actually hoping to see more of. I'm proud of their success and I'll continue observing their progress. Good luck, boys!

      Edit: I should also be mentioning that my friend got me into Kpop way back to the Dope era, from there she introduced me to Exo and Seventeen, all three of which I now stan, then in 2015 I offically became a multifandomer. Not True. Almost every Korean will know Big Bang and they were called ugly and short...but it is sheer talent. You know how good their music is? They don't even have to dance...people just like their music and lyrics...they were the 1st "idol" group to be self-produced...writing and composing and producing...whilst other idol groups just sang songs written for them and danced from choreographer's lessons.
      GD's lyrics and music and creativity and their performance artistry is off the charts....something that was new to Korea at the time...they were pioneers. Everything they wore became the biggest fad. GD is a fashion icon as well. They are also very hilarious and real...not manufactured or perfect idols.
      Big Bang is known as the Idol of Idols...BTS members have gone to their concerts and constantly sing all their songs. Celebrities say GD is one of the few real celebs in Korea where even celebrities are in awe of GD...his charisma and swagger is something not seen in regular Koreans.

      @@judylee4761 Bts don't make manufactured music! They make their own music! And I respect that GD and bts part. Jungkook himself is a gd fan but tbh I don't like bigbang's music. Not saying that they are bad but they just don't fit my taste. I like groups like dreamcatcher. They make diff music.Ppl generally hate on bts because all of them wanna seem cool by saying that they don't listen to mainstream music and bla bla. So obviously, they are not famous amongst boys but those boys who have really digged deeper into bts know about their messages and are some really great fanboys. Bts also appeals a lot to foreign middle aged ppl.. I have seen 1000s of armys in 30s,40s and even 60s. I am an army coz of their music, message and vibrant personality. I didn't get attracted to bts for the first time because of their looks. Honestly, I thought they were average looking. And talking about bb, they are famous but koreans still obsess a lot about their beauty standards. And that is ridiculous.

    honestly if you were to do this interview in the US, until recently, there would still be way less recognition. if you did it now it still would probablly just be, "oh the guys that are all over twitter??" and they would know nothing more. But BTS has been able to form small pockets of fandom in so many many countries that the numbers begin to add up. Plus they've built such an insanely passionate fandom. Even though they will probably never be a household name in any specific country, even their own country, they have a truly global fandom that is proving to be very powerful. I see it when we literally win awards for them and when youtube reactors who may literally only have 20 videos have THOUSANDS of subscribers, or when tiny US local news stations cover BTS and get MILLIONS of retweets on twitter because they simply posted a picture of BTS without Suga in it. I've never even met another person who knows what BTS is, but I feel powerful and because I am ARMY

Now they things are slowly being excepted. USA can be very judging of fellow Americans tastes. Kpop has actually been more successful recently because of EXO and BTS, AND THE INTERNATIONAL FANS. Thank you all for working so hard to build bridges and transcend borders, culture, and language and showing your great talents and always doing your best. Because of this you have won awards and gain recognition so that the USA fans no longer have to hide their love for Korean Pop and BTS. Bless you.

      Kpop was first broken into the western world by legendary groups like Big Bang and SNSD. Lately, the more recent, 3rd gen groups like BTS, Exo, BlackPink, Twice etc. have helped the genre spread to a lot of countries. Sure, they may not be a lot of fans in a particular country, but add up the total fans and the amount is vast. From what I know, BTS Exo and BlackPink are the most popular currently in US, although that is subject to change since many groups debut every year. But BTS has definitely opened Kpop up to a lot of ppl, including me. (I discovered BTS and then through them Kpop) Proud to be an ARMY, because we are very strong like an actual army

    I don't understand why everyone here assumes everyone in Korea should know every tiny little thing about BTS. I mean, the fact that they even know their name and know a song by them says something. I've heard tons of songs where I don't know who sings them myself. Take an American artist example like Fifth Harmony for me. I've heard the name sure, but I couldn't tell you what awards they've won, how many albums they've sold or even what they look like. But the fact that I even know their name when I don't actively follow them or their music speaks to their success. The same goes for BTS, the fact that most of these people obviously don't really listen to kpop and yet STILL HAVE HEARD OF THEM tells me that they are relatively well known. Everyone has different tastes and priorities and some people need to realize that.

I don't have knowledge about other k-pop artists other than their group names, title tracks, and some of the members. One interesting story, I accidentally saw GD ( a member of Big Bang) once when he was shopping in a mall in my city and even though I freaked out a little, I didn't try to get closer to him. VIP's would have called me crazy or even idiotic but that's just how much I care about other kpop groups.

    I think Koreans are not into BTS because they are not addicted to TH-cam 😂😂
    Cuz for me and lot of other Armys , they stumbled upon MVs like *Dope* , *Fire* , *I Need you* , *Boy in Love* , *War of hormone* etc, then watched subs like rookie king and Bulk buk game*? And Watched random videos of their lives and got to know how nice and down to earth kinda boys they were 😄((funny and adorable too))
    We all saw how they are hardworking ,passionate and talented in more ways that one so we couldn't help but love them and support them thereby becoming *fans* 😄😄
    We feel happiness seeing them rewarded for their hard work just like we would be on a family members success 👪😊
    Does my fellow army agree ?🙌🙌

Well BTS is so popular here in our country almost all my fellows know them even my grandmother especially when I'm watching their MVs in YT at our TV , she always say that BTS is so handsome especially Jungkook hahahaha. And BTS is not popular because of their handsome faces, well aside from their talents, we ARMYs love and adore how they work really hard just to fulfill their goals. And one thing, me as a Kpop fan, I like how they shine. They started at the little point until they reach what they are experiencing today. It seems that the only way for them to get validated by K-public is to write a public-friendly song. But tbh I'd rather BTS make music for their own enjoyment & to deliver messages that they think are important. As an artist, it truly sucks & hurtful to make songs that nobody would listen, but BTS have gone through that. And thankfully two years after their debut even if Korea ignores them, the whole world has its eye on BTS. So I think if they just do what they've done so far, it's only a matter of time before Koreans see what the international fans have seen in BTS for so long.

      nah, rather, in Korea it's more about really entering Korean variety shows and entertainment and TV. In Korea, 예능, or variety shows and entertainment is HUGE and crucial to letting people know about Korean celebrities because a lot of Koreans (surprisingly) don't really listen to Kpop because of music tastes. Especially a lot of adults like watching variety entertainment. For example, Big Bang hit it big not just because of Lies and Haru Haru, but also because Daesung's appearance in....Family.....I forgot the name but it was a popular show. I LOVE BTS! but, they don't appear on TV often

    • @user-th7ct4fn6l
      @user-th7ct4fn6l 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      There are typical types of songs that the korean public is crazy about- and I appreciate bts so much for not following that trend in music. I'm happy that bts tries different styles of music, whether it may be popular to the public or not. I can't believe how ignorant many koreans are when it comes to bts. I mean, they just won a BILLBOARD social artist award and nobody really knows about them in korea? That's just sad. I hope koreans would stop ignoring bts just because they're an idol group. Many koreans think having "great taste in music" equals not listening to idol songs- super stupid idea. If an idol group has their own message to deliver through their songs and has their own color and style, they should be regarded the same as any other "artist". Korean should really stop sleeping on bts and actually start appreciating their music.

  • @rainxcviii1612
    @rainxcviii1612 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One huge reason that BTS isn't so popular in Korea as they are internationally is because they don't appear on TV or Radio as much as other idols from groups do. They have very little endorsements and CFs compared to other groups. For example Wanna One who currently beat BTS in brand reputation for the month of April by over 4 million points. They're always appearing on TV and people from all age groups get to know about them. You walk in the streets and see at least one members face on some sort of advertisement. BTS has had at least 4 TV appearances in 2017 and none in 2018 so far, so many people who hear about them will only hear about them during comeback season and when they break some sort of huge record. Other than breaking records and winning awards, no one cares to know more about them or listen to their non title tracks unless they're a fan.

    • @rainxcviii1612
      @rainxcviii1612 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if after BTS's international popularity dissipates, will their support from Korea also dissipate as well? Will they have to build that bond with the general population starting from the bottom? Bighit is too focused on having BTS at a huge global scale but i fear it will backlash hard one day. But for them slowing down or stopping is not an option, they're going to keep going as far as they can possibly reach before landing back down again.

Yes, they can sing (awesomely), can dance ( but i must admit, only bts choreography stuns me when i first see it).... and yes, they also hardworking... however, when there are to many idol group came out... im becoming tired of it... and i left kpop... but bts brought me back... because the originality in their music... well, i dont know how to say this... i just know that the members participated in the album making although i still dont know that they participated in it...because each line of each member has that persons own vibe...well, i hope u understand....

      the snakeu on jhope shoulder same! I've heard tons of songs from tons of groups, girl and boy groups. I have been hearing kpop song since Super Junior era, around 7 years. Not only kpop, but also Korean ballads. So I fully understand you.
      koyukiny you are right, they are freaking gorgeous. but wrong with the fact that they would not be this popular if they are not handsome. their appearances placed below great songs, relatable lyrics, great teamwork, great personality, hard-working, sincere, passion. that are the typical reasons ARMYs around the world would give.
      Lastly, good-looking reason does not apply to fanboys. From what I have seen, most of big Kpop reactors (youtube) are male.

      They also said that their dancing and songs are the reason why they are so successful and when you watch a music video you can’t know how goofy or whatever they are

      Yeah, I got into BTS because I really liked their music. Now, they stand out to me because of the chemistry between all the members. I love all of their relationships with each other. They have beautiful personalities and their music is really good. This is the way that people think about ARMYs but I'm pretty sure all true fans love them for way more than their appearances.

      Nessa I feel you. I've been a fan since their first comebacks, watched their shows when they were still rookies, struggling to get to the top and working hard as they could. I was so captivated by everyone's hardwork, and it took me two episodes to learn their names. I was sad that people didn't give them the recognition they deserved but right now .. I feel like their fandom is getting worse and worse. there's only 10% of people that are actually armys, who don't brag about their talent, start fanwars or bash others just to praise our boys. bts would be so disappointed in most of us.

    The fact that our boys are not really popular in their own country kinda saddens me alittle but it's okay. As long as ARMYs all around the world supports the and they're happy. That's all that matters to me. :)

      adibah_ tofu they're popular with teenagers lol. These people are aged twenty and up, save for like the two middle schoolers who said BTS was famous among the girls. These people will say what they see or hear briefly. But im sure if these two interviewers went to teenagers, there would be a more positive response

      Sara H. That's not true I have seen statistics and we have 20-30 year old k-diamonds (more than others)
      It's just general public but they're "studying" about bts now (literally coming from new version of this video and every1 knew about bts) our k-fanbase is in top2 biggest fanbase in korea, it's just media was always quiet about bts but everything is changing and gp starts to love bts, today I read that gp (30-50years old) chose bts as adol they want to have Christmas with, bts is getting recognized by general public

      Even at that time, Bangtan was so popular even with older people (college and adults) those people not being fans doesn't mean anything, the numbers speak for themselves

    This vid isn't as bad as some people are talking. Sounds realistic, a decent amount know of them, but the action starts when you ask who of the people THEY know that know of them lol. I do think because it's a pop group/artist, just like it would be in the states, you're gonna have regular folks who aren't QUITE into that scene, but will hear about an artist if they get that big. That doesn't mean an artist isn't known though. For example, I promise you no one in my family knows of Dua Lipa, but that doesn't mean she's not successful and well known in her own right, with many many many people willing to vouch for her. Same thing here, or with any other kpop group that gets popular enough for a vid like this to be made for them. SK doesn't have to be 100% pop fandom to be aware of it's own people at the basic level if you have a good sample size, just like the U.S. isn't only fans of Demi Lovato or Hailee Steinfeld or something. Yeah some people follow them but statistically many don't, yet they're still known and successful.
    I think Bangtan is doing well for themselves, suffice to say. About them mentioning good looks, tbh, it's a compliment at the end of the day and especially considering how important that can be in their society, I'd take it haha. Don't make it seem like that's the ONLY thing they said though. Many people mentioned their dancing (talent) and music (talent) along with good looks (super duper benefit no matter how you cut it). Idk, I liked it. A lot of them were funny to me, or like...wanting to sound like they knew less, but a few seconds later got more comfy and could be honest that these were at least celebrities they knew of. Interesting vid lol.

      donte j. This needs to be comment number one. Like, I love BTS, my life practically revolves around them, but I don't by any stretch assume that everyone in South Korea shares my same tastes. Dua Lipa was a great example. Like, I've heard of her, don't know that much about her, but know she's doing pretty well for herself even if I don't know the specific awards she's won, number of albums she's sold, or what her dog's name is (if she even has a dog) and I wouldn't recognize her if she passed me on the street. But the fact that I even know of her when I don't actively follow her speaks to her success.

    Local medias(Korean) weren't really paying attention and lil bit discriminised Bangtan back then. Only international media recognised their talents and ability. Its such a shame, local media did that to Bangtan. Now who' has made DaehanMinGuk proud? Only Bangtan. Im really thankful to K-ARMYs who gave their loyalty and supports to Bangtan. Without them, ARMYs all over the world would never know and love them. K-DIAMONDS, I-LOVELIES love you and appreciated you so much. Tq for supporting uri Bangtan. I am proud ARMY since 2014.

    returning back from the other video, people's opinions about bts has changed so much, like they're so much more appreciated and successful in their own country, and that makes me so proud of them, and so are k-armys. I love how they grew up in their impression on other people, and how people know more about them because now they appear on tv more regularly.
