Loveeee D.P Jung Hae In played it really well and I wonder if the SK military service really that though. In Indonesia there are several cases of bullying I heard in police academy or army too, so I always have image that field is tough with plenty of seniority but I don’t know to what extent.
The Korean entertainment industry really needs to change. In the U.S, We don't have trainees or companies that control our every move. Just seems way too controlling over there. IMO
I dont really know abt other company but i noticed that idols from yg are allowed to do their own shit. Gd with his own brand and nike collab, jennie with her gentle monster collab, bp members with being global brand ambassadors, mino with his art exhibit, yoon with his photo exhibit, etc. I also heard that yga are paid the most among other big agencies.
I vouch for when Soobin said idols x idols relationships don't last long most of the time because some idols tend to be full of themselves. Being a kpop fan for 12 years, I kept seeing my older biases ending up dating mostly business people or athletes or non-celebs so I figured, yeah, it makes sense.
I mean that delusional fans are regular people, so they are going to like it when idols date regular people because it makes them think they actually have a chance.
Idols work so hard to achieve dance, vocal, rap, styling, acting, and visual that they may admire another idol achieving great results w/ the same work. But it can become a competition or the hard striving of their work can be a problem for their relationships.
Gosh. Listening to these insights I can't help but think that being an idol is somewhere between the old Hollywood studio system and the Hunger Games. When it's your fans gifting you the things you need to live... Interesting video!
I'd also say the K-Pop industry is very similar to how American sports, particularly football/basketball, industry works. Particularly the scouting when they're young/in high school, signing them to a team (or in K-Pops case, a record label like YG/SM/Hybe), and then training them to maybe be on the starting line (debut). Players sometimes get injured, have controversies/scandals, dating scandals similar to K-Pop industry and they have to try to not let it impact their main duties or their fans start hating and become very toxic (which they already do towards other players/teams anyway lol). It's surprisingly similar.
@@MrSuperjam789 Right? Things like the ban on dating or marrying for young actors, fake studio-arranged dating between stars for publicity's sake (or killing rumors of homosexuality). Getting locked into contracts with one studio for years and ending up making pretty much no money at all, studio public relations responses to actors' bad behavior...etc etc.
Because they create an intimate image in their head with the idols cuz of the nature of kpop content and no dating policy. I personally think that there should be some research on this but yea, there are lots of delusional fans and they truly feel heartbroken from this.
@@anikaabida6019 there is research on this, a tonne of scholarly work on the parasocial relationships in communication and Korean studies as well as the impact on idols suicide mental.health etc
Exactly!! That's why it won't be a change in the future about that topic, unless the own agency start to sell their groups as artists and not boyfriends and girlfriends.
Imagine not being able to openly have a relationship because a complete stranger might have a melt down, or no longer support your music. The sacrifices are too much. Being a KPop idol seems unhealthy on so many levels and doesn’t sound appealing at all. I enjoyed this and appreciated her perspective.
Not to mention its kind of illegal bc its like taking a basic human right from somoene and a stranger even wth having a relatioship is a HUMAN NEED and RIGHT
But that the compromise you have to accept, in any case for what I have seen it's a rule valid in their twenties when they are at the peak of their activities. Considering their schedule, the scrutiny of the public 24/7, the public image, the tours and other endorsements etc. how on earth can you keep up a stable and meaningful relationship? It's a luxury when they have good friendships, and if that happen within the group they belong, they should make the best out of it. Or when they are involved in extra activities such as being the MC in music programs they can meet new people, colleagues, interact and expand the circle of friends. Past 30, after military service, they can move on with their personal life and start dating in public etc. because the target audience have aged as well and have become more reasonable and understanding.
Sadly a lot of fans are mostly into idols for their looks etc. and not primarily for the music. If you see all the ppl on TV, TH-cam etc. getting asked who their favorite member is and why, a lot of the time they'll say because they're good looking. Also Kpop is very performance oriented and often not really focused on the music. A lot of idol albums will have a catchy title song and otherwise lots of "fillers".
Shoutout to KQ Entertainment for letting their idol go on hiatus to take care of their mental health properly. We stan the consideration, care and foresight.
Jyp was the first to do that with a twice member (mina). But it depends from idol to idol what that break is like, sometimes they have a therapist but that therapist is fulfilling the companies demands like for jae day6. So I wouldnt praise companies for giving their artists mental health breaks & that artist under KQ is still under tight contract so they wont say anything unlike jae who was more free when he revealed everything.
@@cnorm4887 bruh I'm myday & atiny and trust me JYPE aint shit front of KQ let me tell you how much mistreatment they have done to day 6 alone ,day 6 was 6 member group and they kicked out one of the member Junyheok and then called it "he left for personal reasons" coz news of him dating a fan broke out(I'm leaving the group for personal reasons doesn't make sense coz he litreally re-debuted again) they never gave us a full explanation. They hardly promote thier comebacks too it's actually too painful to see as a fan trust me .

They didnt bash or say anything bad abt the ex member, its courtesy. The youtube thing is ridiculous honestly, but again jype is trying to create an image just like all these other kpop companies & if they cant control it then its unecessary to them. If he were to do a youtube channel that's still controlled by jype it would work, any company would want that. I think kpop companies in general wouldn't let him do what he does because it's too different. Yeaa that part abt hardly promoting the comebacks is true, stuj needs to have more budget from jype's top management cuz trynna save money gives no results.
@@cnorm4887 yeah I'm just hoping jype promotes them better tho like there is hardly any promotion for young k new single "guard you". 😭😭 JYPE has many talented artists but they still need to do a lot better at management/promotion and good treatment
To be honest, if kpop fans were healthier the kpop industry wouldn't make as much money. I'm not saying that it's okay to do so, but the truth is that a large part of the money that this industry generates is precisely for making fans think that they have a "relationship" with their idol, that he loves them more than anyone in the world and to get them to buy hundreds of albums to "take care" of their idol and thank him for the love he give to them. If you could get the fandoms to be really healthy the kpop industry would stop working as it does now, it wouldn't make that much money and there wouldn't be so many groups debuting every year
Your comment literally made me breath. You said out loud what I was thinking. I also think kpop industry is just taking advantage of the people who are in urge of not feeling lonely, etc. They are just selling the perfect image/visual and the good side of their artists so that they can become a role model, or a dating model. And so these fans are just feeling the urge of feeling closer and closer to these partially real images. I am not saying that idols are fake. I am just pinpointing what the industry is going for and how these fans are just eating it without thinking of how hard this way of living might be... They cry and say inhuman things when someone is dating, smoking, take a "too normal"/human picture of themselves, talk about their point of view, etc... Of course I am NOT saying that ALL the fans are like this. I'm just loving those artists out there but my heart just hurts when I think about "how it's working".
Totally agree. I always say this at the beginning stages of the idol entertainment industry they should have normalize alot of things for the future Kpop idols, because fans would just see it has the norm for idols to date, drinking, clubbing, doing hobbies and traveling and would just support their idol music and not put social pressures on them for being a perfect human being.
I think even if they want to be good. Due to thr nature and demands of their jobs they would not be. I personally would never want to date an idol. I rather date a regular person. Plus the stress of their fans hating on you. No thanks. I wish the best to whomever they end up marrying. And I will support them.
@@trishashaileshshukla6393 4th generation idols can't really date, it's written or unwritten rule of every K-pop agency. It's nothing for them to throw them out if they violate it when they're not as popular and trainee too. U believe it or not, only groups that debuted earlier can date, but many of them don't do it. And there's Jyp where's date ban cancelled after 3 yr after debut
@@Jiu_zule I think they are still young so that is okay. And most of the time their company hides their relationship (if any). But think about 3rd Generation k-pop idols. The amount of backlash these people receive after disclosing their relationship is horrendous.
This girl wasnt even a famous kpop idol. She was legit only an idol for months and doesn’t even have a solid fanbase. I dont know why she keep showing up on these interviews. Interview people like Ashley Choi who actually have an “insider” view instead of this wanna be whatever her name is. She isn’t interesting to even listen to or look at! Its a thumbs down for me
Soobeanie’s info is awesome i love it, at least she had first hand experience in many things. About “insiders”, well…it’s fun to know from them but i take a step back when listening to it.
As a near psychology major and also a k-pop fan, I'm really concerned about the mental health of these idols... this topic definitely is not being taken seriously as it should.
I agree. I don’t understand why there aren’t more studies on this, and especially on the “fan culture” phenomenon. If anything it’s becoming for relevant than ever.
Maybe if the country closes some plastic surgery clinics and opens up more therapy clinics, i feel like a lot of people may be healthier and satisfied with who they are :)
Yeah you're right but sadly the first thing people look at is how good looking you're... A rookie group members were harassed in twitter few months ago when their debut concept photos were released bcoz some kpop stans feel like they are not good looking smh
Sounds like a gold painted jail for me. The more I learn about S.K and the Kpop industry the more I think the fast technological and industrial development was impressive but the people were left behind. I mean no disrespect because the rest of the world ain’t better but it’s sadden me. Those kids ( they were kids when they started) work their ass off days in and days out with no certainty of making it. They’re 1m70 for less than 50kilos ( which is def not healthy), can’t date, can’t go out in public freely, are monitored 24/7, and the money isn’t guaranteed?! Sounds like a scam if you’re asking me.
@Pristin & Hinapia orphan - Weeekly & Loona adoptee Because the company invest a LOT of money on them and the albums, a lot of staff, music video, content, clothes, pay the shows to perform, etc, and they give them classes, food, rent and a big big etcetera, so of course they don't earn a lot of extra money and they finally start to gain more when the debts are payed in a few years(luckily). And thanks to big concerts and royalties of the idols who wrote and compose music they earn more, and specially if they have tv commercials, model/acting/mcs contracts :)
I’m a fan of BTS since 2016, I have never imagined dating any BTS members and I don’t buy any albums and other stuff. I’m not broke, I have my own job, but I don’t want to spend for that while I have access to enjoy content on online. (but I want to spend for their offline concert) I bet a lot of ARMY are like me. 😂 😂 Edit: Nowadays Kim Nam Joon, this man wrecked me so hard with his buff body.😋
You’re just like me. I would actually love to see the boys in a relationship I think it would be cute. I’m definitely ready for when they go on tour. I do stream their music on Spotify cuz I genuinely really enjoy their music
I just wanted to talk about this to get it off my chest.. The lyrics of 'My Time' do talk about losing out on time and Jungkook's probably talking about how he couldn't do things a lot of people his age could do. Understandable. But thinking about it, that's true for any successful person (unless money/position has been handed to them on a golden platter). If you set your mind on achieving your dreams you *will* lose out on other things. You can't do everything. Doctors, athletes, engineers, CEOs, teachers, soldiers etc. all lose other parts of their lives to become who they are. And that's why I don't think 'My Time' is only about idols or celebrities, but it is relatable to any person who spent their youth chasing their dreams and then looks back at the past. I don't think Jungkook means that he's regretting his decision, but rather he's thinking about the things he may have done if he wasn't an idol and realising how fast time flies.
Wow! This is exactly what i was thinking when they mentioned the song. I couldn't agree more. Most successful people on the process to get to where they are had to make that extra sacrifice, and that includes losing out on some of the things. I believe that definitely will be relatable to everyone who works harder to achieve their dreams.
I'm a med student and I related to Jungkook's song from that album the most. Keeping in contact with family and friends means losing out on study time and sleep, and while I do love them, the stress of knowing how much time I'm losing doesn't let me fully enjoy the time socializing. I had to make up a system; when I cook, I talk to my mom. When I'm doing my hair, I talk to my friends, and and I'm washing my hair and showering I listen to DKDKTV 🙈 Because I hardly have any other time in the day to catch up 😭
Ya but most successful people aren't monitored whole time, can go out when they wish, can take break when they wish, I don't say they waste time in these things but they aren't controlled by someone on what to do and what to say...
I agree.Any professional that aims to earn above a certain amount of money and carries responsibility have to sacrifice time and effort.i am a doctor and work 100hour week for years
The dating question.. I think it comes with the fan service too. I mean these idols are out here making us feel like we're their everything and it could mess with some people's brains. These companies know what they're doing. Fans have so much interaction with these idols everything is in the palm of their hands. It's almost scary.. I can separate it but I'm from the US so maybe thats why? I wouldn't care if they dated.
@@minimochi2206 all bou bands so it but the way the Korean groups talk to the fans is insane. They say, what are clearly written as love songs, are devotee devoted to fans. I am sure they appreciate their fans but it's not healthy to talk like that and feed young girls delusions
@@rajs7876 Well they're doing what is asked of them... some of them are just natural flirts as well. The female idols do it too, it's just more of a thing with male idols seeing as the kpop audience is more female than male. Anyway.. They need to learn to separate themselves from it.
@@minimochi2206 ylboyh parties should be responsible, I mean they are kids usually when the fantasies start so maybe parents need to intervene. I grew up in North America we had crushes on our boy bands too but they would date etc so it was normal to not think we would marry them lol
thats sad :( i just hope fans will be more open minded and let their idols date, in private or public. the idols is not yours to begin with, they're human too :(
Amazing video! Thank you! My theory on earphones is that idols use it to avoid being rude for not responding when fans are calling their names and in that sense it's "more acceptable" to wear earphones and just pretend you don't hear a thing (or actually listening to something) than to just obviously hear but "ignore" (basically because you have to).
Honestly kpop companies need to just lift that dating ban. Idols are human and should be allowed to date and date publicly (if they want). The kpop companies just created a monster with the fan culture and delusion.
Though, I'm all for idols dating, I think it's already part of the strategy. It's the delulu fans that they're targeting for, let's be real here. 💀 But also, other than that, I think they also want their idols to just focus on their work more until they have a certain notoriety.
Tho dating ban actually means not announcing u r dating to public otherwise idols r allowed to date but I agree . Or atleast they should do what JYP did only 3yrs of dating ban.
Yea it is a tactful business strategy, this is a very successful way of attracting a fan base so most companies will still hold onto the no dating policy until the idols get older later in life and become more independent.
The companies aren't to blame, they adjust themselves to the culture, and people won't take it well, so the the company will try hard to keep a clean image
I also think the intense fan service makes some young impressionable fans think that their idols actually love and care abt them and then when a dating scandal breaks out it ruins the illusion bc the fans realise they don’t actually know their idols or what they’re doing
@@smileyz1054 It's usually young fans who believe in the illusion, or Korean fans because they're conditioned to believe in it (the illusion) and because Western fans already know that the illusion is fake and that artists are just people are need their privacy and their own social life and off-time... just from what I've observed, I might be wrong and there might be exceptions to it, as always.
I found most of the ships are either fanservice or friendship thingy they do. Really, what the shippers found romantic imo just friends interacting with each other. Blackpinks popularity is around this whole brand image yg created for them. The high end fashion and luxury is very much part of thier brand which is why I think that yg has such a significant role to play. Their brand value is not from being realtable or as musicians . They have become icons for young Asian girls who probably don't always see other successful young females in the music and entertainment space on a global scale. Pretty and successful.
yup, i do see this happening with blackpink. For example, for most of the kpop concerts i go to, people usually rave about the performance and how hyped up/ lit is was. But for the blackpink concert that I went to, ppl were mainly gushing about blackpink's appearances and how pretty they were or how nice their style was. Like yes, ppl did still make comments about their performance, but the majority of the fangirling/ fanboying was based around their appearance.
I too felt the same...coz they are becoming an influential grp rather than a music group...am a multi stan.. I stan blackpink, bts, tbz, svt,iu etc.... it felt so bad when some of the groups and songs are so underrated even they have songs which gives great message to the society (eventhough they compose, produce, and write meaningful lyrics to their own songs)
It would be interesting to hear from a former boy Kpop idol since it’s a different angle. I so totally agree about the worst thing of being an idol is that there are so many of them. I tend to go for the underdog groups and that is just so true. It doesn’t depend on the talent, but on your management company and social media.
I'm kinda surprised that she didn't talk about the fact that female idols have to maintain the "girlfriend" image for their male fans as well. I was expecting a female idol to talk about that since it's just as big as the "boyfriend" image for male idols in creating that false image where the fans will pour money into their fave because they are obsessed with them. The mindset is a little different when it comes to male fans of female idols but it's just as toxic.
Isn't the dating thing to do with the 'My Oppa' mindset? When I was researching the idol basics, the fan culture of my oppa came up an INSANE amount. I read so many damn horror stories, it almost put me off. It's scary how serious some fans get, it's worthy of a psych study as I think it would be interesting to see the results from it.
@@Vor567tez Basically, fans having the image that their idols belong to them and a single idol means they are free to fantasize dating said idols so when said idol annouced that they're taken, some of these fans become aggressive
@@Vor567tez I'd say it's close to similar with Yandere. The other term for the crazy fans is Sasaeng, doesn't have a literal translation. But I believe there was an example of it in 2018 with BTS' Jimin. A fan sent him a bloody knife and threatened his life if he didn't admit to loving her. Another obvious example would be the monstrousity that is Oli London. He whole heartedly believes if he worships Jimin (again poor man) that Jimin will notice him, fall in love and marry him. You take that and times it by thousands; there's the my oppa mindset. They have literal cults worshipping idols, they stalk, harrass, hurt and destroy just about anything and anyone near the idol because something is telling them 'that idol is mine. Mine and mine alone. If I can't have them, No body will.' they literally become so enamoured by the idol and the fanservice they believe it's directed at them specifically. Idols tread a literal line of 'if I love another; they'll be harmed.' these fans will legitimately sell EVERYTHING they have, organs included to get near the artists. It's honestly terrifying to see; I had a friend who was basically my oppa personified; she scared me to the point i became a passenger because I was genuinely afriad if I didn't she'd hurt me for refusing. I think it'd be interesting to see the circumstances that lead to them becoming so attached to a star, their context and stuff if that makes sense? Note: the hangul for it is My oppa- 내 오빠 (I believe) Sasaeng- 사생팽 (again I think) Note of note: I've only really taken to learning hangul fully last year so I'm sorry if the characters aren't correct and stuff :')
I knew it since first generation of Kpoo. Trust me first generation are really bad. I knew one that we can say 'success' he sell his own blood during trainee. When they sign contract they sign the debt as well! Cause all accommodation are not free.
When I watched the BTS BE comeback special, each member got a role to handle for one comedic segment of the special. J Hope was assigned to do the 'Mental Care' and he went around checking on everyone individually. He was patting the other guys on their arms, chests, and etc saying 'Mental care, mental care. ' But even though it was funny, it gave a good idea of the fact that idols do need to have their mental health or mental care provided for, too. I think those companies that treat their idols with respect and love are taking care of their idols' mental health. Take MINGI from ATEEZ for example. He took around 9 months hiatus to manage his anxiety. His management company definitely did provide for his mental and emotional well being. And he came back strong, happy, and healthy! So, mental care, as Hobi said, is something each person needs regularly in order to be their best self. Thanks for the video David and Soubeanie or Soubeanie
I worry about Hobi's own mental health tbh, as he seems to be thinking of others and always "on" for others so much. But I worry about all idol's mental health really. I think most people can benefit from therapy, and I know being an idol has to be really stressful on top of life in general.
Yes! That's why I think KQ Entertainment is one of the best companies out there. I'm glad they prioritized Mingi's health and even asked for permission from his parents and doctor if he could participate in the comeback together with Ateez. And he looks so good and healthy. It just makes me happy to see him again
I never understood the whole "I don't want my idol to date" thing cause if I wanted to date my fav idol, knowing that he/she's around dating people would make me think that I have a chance, so I don't know why they think the opposite way.
I believe that it might be because these fans think that if their idol is dating somebody else than he obviously does not date them! It makes me so sad when fans believe the own their idols :(
Yeah, like it would literally raise your 0.0001% chance of dating an idol to atleast 0.001%, and thats better than 0.0000000000001% chance with the dating ban.
That why i love KQ Entertainment cause Ateez members are free, decided of their hair colors, participaded for the music (lyrics and producing) have tattoes, have hobbies like sport like Hongjoong who likes plays tennis or Jongho with futsal, they have vacations , let member when he's feel down like Mingi , they have food when they want and what , also they don't seems controlled a lot by their managers when they goes in live or shows/ interviews I stan KQ Entertainment too
Girl. Did you miss the part that all of it is part of an illusion created by the company? You could say the same about ATeam Ent and VAV, but it's all part of the image they're trying to create for themselves and the idols. The guys also have tattoos, go to school, take vacations etc., but it's all monitored even if it appears that it's not. The company is not going to take a chance on something happening and ruining the group.
free? they are still get monitored in whatever they did, they need to have permission because they are under contact. do u know when idols have freedom? when they do not sign any contract.
If that’s the image you have, then the company has done its job really well. This industry works in portraying a fantasy to feed into people who are heavily into this sort of thing
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about making it *anywhere* in the kpop industry, it is that you must have the mentality to endure. If you don’t have the willpower, the motivation, the dedication, the mindset, the ability to suffer and still yearn for success, then you might not make it too far. And that’s just the career overall, considering how much is being sacrificed if you *do* make it big
I wonder how idol life in Japan compares to Korea. Like, I know the whole idol culture and training system started there but I wonder what are the similarities and differences between the two? I feel like Japan values privacy more. There are singers who are anonymous and no one knows what they look like(Ado comes to mind).
Nahhh there's still some sasaengs in Japan. And I feel like idol culture there is super sad cause you barely make any money and get any chance to be in the spotlight because 100 members groups are norm. Plus digital idols are a thing too so you would have to compete with practically perfect beings on top of it.
if you want to realize just how delulu kpop fangirls are, go watch ANY boygroups vlive and read comments. it's a cringefest what these girls will actually say to idols. it's pure desperation. IMO if I was an idol and someone said these things to me, those are the ones i would want to stay far far far away from lol. even just usernames of fangirls is pretty pathetic for the most part
Well not to say fan boys don't do it too its just boys in east Asian are really very watched in behaviour by elders ( there's always exceptions ) while girls are treated like porcelain ( or ignored cause your gonna be married off one day ) as long as you don't shame your family ( like run outside naked screaming ) girls get alot of behaviour freedom the family gets the blame instead.
Jungkook wrote song about his loss of his own time he always have to be on spotlight but in the interview with Yoo Quiz on the Block, ‘he said he didn’t regret at all coz that make him to become to be mature and who he is today. If he have the chance to choose again he will choose this path again’
Don't compare bts with other boy groups especially in small companies. Jk has the strongest advantage to speak like that because bts make it big. They are grabbing the fruits of they hard work . 9 feel that bts shouldn't be compared anymore with idol lifestyle becouse they are living like in other dimension. He lost all that but he gained other things. But there are there hundreds of idols that do a lot of that struggle even more and they don't even get paid

Having obsessive fans is a price Kpop idols willingly pay too. They know it's gonna happen, but it's worth the fame and money. Companies too support it. Two hands make a clap, so it's something that Kpop industry profits on. The obsessive fans/Sasaengs.
Yeah agree. I lost count of idols who call their fans lovers or girlfriends. Like they can't have their cake and eat it too. At the same time promote obsessive behavior so people buy into what they're selling and then call out obsession as problematic
I'm not an expert and not even Korean, but I think - as many people have stated here as well - labels in fact do sell fantasies. Everything from looks to behaviour and dating life is usually quite non-human - just happy, perfect and extremelly beautiful characters singing, dancing and talking. I started to listen to K-pop as an adult few years ago, and idols instantly reminded me of those characters I found in books or I just imagined as a kid/teenager. Labels kind of turn those fantasies everyone has into reality. As I said I'm an adult, almost in my thirties, and I obviously don't feel it the same way I would have when I was younger. I still enjoy music and the acts. Anyway, I think that "fantasy business" is one major reason K-pop is so popular - and on the other hand, groups with little more realistic and humane appearance - like BTS - are popular abroad. But it's really interesting!
And to add to the previous: even their flaws are acceptable and part of the fantasy. Depression and low self-esteem do good for the brand nowadays - unlike issues with gambling, for example. I think BTS Suga is a good example from this: his not rich background, anxiety and other struggels are essential part of his image and story. Not to say that they aren't real or sad, of course. It's just a good example of how tragedies are much more acceptable and even fascinating when it comes to good looking and talented people. If he was over-weight and unemployed, his depression would just be a number in the statistics.
". I started to listen to K-pop as an adult few years ago, and idols instantly reminded me of those characters I found in books or I just imagined as a kid/teenager." That's exactly what it is. I was really into manga since I was 11, I still am just not as much, and I read regular books as well. And it was always an escape and still is for me imagining those "perfect" people who don't really exist IRL but you can self insert or have feelings for. I started listening to Kpop in my late teens but I have this thing where I am not attracted to really good looking people IRL...like it's complicated but if I see a good looking person in real life who is really physically attractive I feel like I cannot trust them or be attracted to them even if maybe they really do have a good heart. I still enjoy to look at them, but in the same way I enjoy to look at a beautiful painting or well designed object. Being as perfect looking as a Kpop idol makes my brain see a real human being somewhere between someone I cannot trust and a nice pair of shoes. I know that sounds horrible because Kpop Idols are humans too and deserve to be treated like humans but it's just the way my mind works. And at least it has saved me from turning into some kind of crazy saesang since I've been a Kpop fan for 12-15 years now. It also means that in my real dating life I only date people for their personality, but then I can escape to the world of books and manga where I don't have that same reaction because I know for sure it's just a fantasy.
I grew up in America and honestly the celebrities here aren't much different My dad works for a VERY famous country music singer (arguably the most free industry on earth) who pretends to be someone completely different in public Like he owns a jet, dislikes country music, talks crap about his fans and is not who he says he is at all he's also not racist lol, despite that being his "brand" his friends are all black and asian
The 'delulu' fans, the obsessive and entitled fans are the DIRECT consequence of the companies' marketing strategy. They're selling not just music, but a 'relationship' with the idol, the perfect bf/gf fantasy, the illusion of their availability and the idea of them being your friend and caring about you. Fans' deep emotional investment and dedication is what companies are aiming for bc it's immensely profitable. So they're willing to sacrifice artists' personal autonomy and put up with fans controlling behaviors.
It makes me wonder how much the members of these groups actually like / care for fans... I've seen some cry on stage overwhelmed with love and I don't think that's fake, considering they actually cried and big stage and fans was their dream the whole time they were training but.. I wonder how much of it it's insincere
I was just thinking about this especially when he brought up how Americans would most likely get praised for being in a relationship with someone. The kpop industry has these weird tactics that make a fans obsessed with a group . Like do you think it’s just a coincidence that these companies put baby laughing noises when a grown adult idol is laughing ?…
@@lovesosweet4474 just saw your reply omg! i believe they genuinely love their fans and cherish them. i think idols assimilate this concept of lack of boundaries from their training under the company. this fundamental mindset that idol-fan relationship is something personal
I think Kang Daniel was able to make KONNECT and have a solo career but of all the endorsements he had. He managed his money well and was able to pay off his contract and buy a building! Great interview. Please have Soobin on more often. A good topic would be about culture shock she experienced while living in another country.
I listen to kpop since 2009, the only thing that I'm still confused until today is why dating is still called as 'scandal' in Korea 😅 not only for kpop singers but also for actors. It's a totally weird weird weird culture... While overseas fans always congratulate anyone who's caught dating & wishing them the best. in my country people don't care if celebs dating or got married, people just respect their private life. & I'm so happy to see artists like Hyuna & Edawn who openly date like normal human being. & I wish all the weird ent culture in Korea can change one day, so celebs can just date freely outside
Reminder - Jay (Day6) went on record to say that he gets NO HELP and has to hire every little thing - including stage crew, lights, makeup, etc. EVERYTHING!
Just to add some more context here. The eaJ project is a passion project of music discovery for Jae and he expressed to the company that for non-commercial eaJ releases (Pacman, It Just Is, Pillows etc.) the company would not get involved, they both agreed on that. I’m not sure what the case is for HITC LA but Jae has expressed that apparently he’s (trying to at least) not taking any profit from it rather spending the money he’d make on production for his stage, therefore no money would be going to the company possibly? Tbh I dunno if his that “No help” thing was towards the company but logically speaking if the company isn’t making money from it, they’re not contractually obligated to provide “help” (if he were to ask for help)
Update : he finally left Day6 and JYPE. Which I think it's honestly great since it really looks like he wasn't having a good or healthy relationship with the company and he's been going through a lot recently.
I'm not a huge fan of the "idols are so busy" narrative. Yes, they are busy. But so are lawyers, so are stockbrokers, so are doctors, and in all these jobs people manage to find time outside of work to have their hobbies, go to events and get laid. I say the last part specifically because I think the "idols are so busy" narrative comes largely from this "my idol is too busy to date" narrative. Attractive males who have the opportunity to have sex are having sex. I'm sorry if that bursts bubbles, people will make time out of their busy schedules for things like this. There are things in life people aren't too busy for, really ever.
Totally agree, I’ve also seen a Korean fan comment that they don’t want the idols dating because it will get on the way of their career, and that’s so bizarre to me. Her argument was that the fans are the ones that invested into their career and they’re paying for them, so they have the right to be made. Against absolute bizarre. I made a point to that they’re paying for the products(including the music) they get what they’re paying, not the idols life. And also it’s their life, they’re choice, if they’d want to continue or not. Everyone that works gets paid, so what? That would mean no one should have a personal life.
It has nothing to do with how much work they have but more about the schedules. Idols have to shoot music videos in like 28 hours to 2/3 days straight and maybe even more. They can have schedules at any point of time, no matter how late it maybe. You see all these music show performances which require almost the whole day with the amount of rehearsals before the live performance and yet even between that they go for other schedules like radio shows, etc. Sometimes they literally have a little bit of food in the car. I think only doctors can compare to such lifestyle and it's quite exhausting physically and mentally bcoz they have to dance and sing and even the korean variety shows are really exhausting and then the whole mental aspects comes in and no matter how strong they are, it's still going to be atleast exhausting if not depressing with all the attention and scrutiny they receive. It's not about how busy they are per day but rather how inconsistent the timings in their scheduling is and it's a particular lifestyle that jobs don't necessarily have. But I will agree that doctors, especially interns and residents and others working in ER or in times like now with covid and all have fucked up schedules as well. But once your over with it, and you're practicing your specialisation, the schedule is still much better then.
My comment is specifically for people who are give the reason for not having much hobbies other than their work. It's nothing to do with their sex life or anything. I only elaborated on it bcoz we can't simply deny that idols do have a really busy life tho which does fuck up their personal life tbh
@@blairwrelos1891 Wall street bankers can work 80-90 hours a week. Each legal profession has their busy season and during that season you may work through many nights as well. You can easily work that much in big law. Is it exactly as much? More? Who knows, probably varies person to person, season to season, and the difference at that point is splitting hairs. I'm not going to accuse you of having that perspective, I understand you're just saying a very narrow thing. Being busy with work can affect your personal life. Ok, well that's obvious. But the erroneous assumption that some people make is that simply because people's personal lives may be affected by work, that they then must not have personal lives. Yeah you might miss some football games or not be able to go golfing or not see your girlfriend much for even weeks at a time but you will still do all those things eventually, and much more so in less busy periods.
@@asecmimosas4536 I think you're not understanding in what sentiment I'm trying to explain. What I'm trying to say is most idols don't get much vacation or rest bcoz they are constantly under scrutiny. Like Soobinie said, idols are expected to practice when they don't have any schedules and even their scheduling is mostly very messed up compared to jobs which are still way more systematic in its timings. Also idk if you live in an asian country but the work expectations in asian countries is just a lot. Most foreigners in korea would agree that Koreans need more Holidays. Now think about the idols, they barely have vacations forget about weekdays. Even if they want to have hobbies, they would be so tired that they would just prefer to rest. That's why I agreed on the comparison with Doctors. My point is it's unnecessary for us to expect them to have hobbies bcoz different people have different capacities and to simply shove off the reason that their busy schedules don't allow them to be productive in other areas isn't our place to decide either. Also I'm pretty sure that most people who are at jobs aren't being scrutinized of what they do unlike kpop idols who do bcoz they have to keep up this certain curated "image". Obviously there are idols who despite their schedules still make time for hobbies but for a lot of idols, we also see that they really don't do much and simply rest and relax, we even see some idols saying that they don't really much friends apart from their group which obviously could be just their personality but also sometimes they just stay at home whenever they can rest, doesn't mean it's an excuse or sth it's just different people have varying levels of energy to spend on various activities 🤷🏻♀️
Love the honesty here, and truth about the Kpop industry. A lot of industries have "romanticized" illusions connected to them. I work in the fashion industry which really has a romanticized version, but in truth it can be a grueling work environment. Nice to see some reality being shared here. Thanks you two!!
"Do they really exist" Woah the guy had an attitude while saying that. He behaved like a celebrity himself lol. Aren't you the same guy who got so excited on getting a little nod from one of the bts members. Well that might be what the fans feel too. To be noticed and recognised. 🙂
Yep many idols have admitted that there is a huge gap between how they got projected and how the way they are actually.....and they said that they are trying to live up to the fans expectations 🙄 company is like just assigning character, in front of public and fans "you- be cute, you- be sexy" etc... even idols itself said that
@@ID_iKONIC_VIP i delete my comments. Actually i am too much lazy to write comments 🤣.Its my first time fighting with anyone. Lets leave these topic because we have nothing to do with this. Have a nice day bro.
I really enjoy kpop music and watching all sorts of idol related content but I have no idea why anyone would ever want to become one. It is just too much stress either you debut and get successful or not. Maybe it just depends on different personalities but I can't imagine it being an enjoyable lifestyle at all.
Neither is being a struggling actor in Hollywood, but many young people have dreams and will sacrifice comfort and convenience for a chance to prove themselves or give something they're passionate about a shot.
@@BluesRiffage am still questioning my self like whether they ll create music stuffs even though they Don't make money..??? Some of them are really doing coz of their passion but some are doing so that they can make so much money, fame, top branded etc...in the latter one, where the music goes(in the name of making music) and fame comes...this is just my point of view
The thing about celebs in the west becoming more famous after they've come out dating each other is a thing from where I am, too. When these celebs date, people will flock around them and suddenly, they'd have tons of brand deals, new shows, etc. Everybody celebrates them and their love. It's always been a normal thing for me until I realized that this is not the case for K-idols. It's very weird.
I hope that for the big groups, the agencies really make special efforts for taking care of the artists' well-being because I can only imagine that it's a lot of work and pressure for them to be celebrities. 14:25They should pay for trips to get massages, do yoga or meditation... things like this.
even though i mostly dislike pledis i at least appreciate that they do let seventeen go on trips where they just get to have fun and drink and just act like regular people (even tho they still film it for fans enjoyment lol but as long the members are ok with it which i think they are) i hope more companies do this
@@Indijana they just have a history of mismanaging and mistreating their artists, most of their girl groups specifically. Those fans are crazy! Poor both of them, what did they do wrong!! Both get hurt esp the girl, she get so much hate for loving someone😔 Fans sometimes forgot that IDOL also a HUMAN. And we (fans) not owned them.
Kpop industry has a lots of problem and deserves all the criticism and should be addressed. But I have seen the hypocrisy of westerners and their media who started this dark side of Kpop narrative when it started getting popular. May be because it was something non-western non-English getting popular that was being seen as a threat. Many of the problems here are very common with other fields like in sports training, football and even the American music industry, how labels bind them in contracts there too. The “dark side” exist in every industry. I am not saying it shouldn’t be addressed, it definitely should be. But when Kpop is addressed there is lot of pigeonholing and this narrative of “manufactured” as if they are not working hard or creating anything. It’s this western idea how one should be born talented, as if all this training makes your talent worthless Lot of it stems from racist stereotypes and techno orientalism and I wish people will address this more.
I really hate it when western fans over criticized the system, which to the point where it may come racist/disrespecting the korean culture. Tbh me as asian, i can understand some rules, and why are they made like that but western fans are not it ://
But dont forget that the idols do sign the contract /agreement and do behave like boyfriends of the fandoms they also feed the delulus its not only the agencies fault but idols also follow them as they get money out of it
As an American listener, I am still trying to grasp the whole “mini album/full-length album” dynamic in the Korean music scene. For me, I am thinking along the terms of “just release a full-length album”.
With that said I think this interview was well done and I liked seeing her side of things. Personally I don't know if it's cause of my mindset but to me music is just music honestly. I have never bought a album (expect a DPR album), never bought a light stick or merch. Sometimes I won't be able to tell you everyone's names or birth date of group member's I follow. If they have good music honestly I'll listen to pretty much anything, English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese etc. Both soloists, main pop scene and more. I think everyone is right though, people are to fixated on a certain idea that they have on a celebrity (even in the western world) I think the mentality has to stop in my honest opinion . Loving an idol is totally okay, listening to their music or whatever etc. But once it gets obsessive or people start doing weird things that's were I think it's too much.
So a lot of people are saying the idol ‘industry’ is unhealthy and I agree there are definitely aspects that need a lot of improvement but if you think of elite athletes, for example, they make similar sacrifices for the chance of a medal. They get up at 4am to swim laps or run before school, they don’t date because it might distract them ( or they simply have no time/energy for dating). When they are actively in events they might spend weeks away from families, they endure harsh diets and rigorous training often for no ‘reward’ in the end. Because Korea has a ‘system’ for coaching and training entertainers it highlights the hardships. Musicians and singers in the West spend also years pursuing their dreams, working several jobs to make a living. Then they might make a hit but get into a dodgy contract with a record company and end up broke and forgotten. In short people with passion will endure to achieve their goals and companies with power will support them or, unfortunately, exploit them. I applaud anyone who works hard to pursue their dreams good luck to them.
I totally agree because these idols are kids or teens when they start and they eventually feel obligated to their company and fans so they'll endure whatever they're told to do not knowing the end of it might cause obsessive and possessive fans. I really hope the fandoms will become more accepting of the privacy of their favorites personal lives, especially when they're dating. I love to see my favorites celebrities being genuinely happy beyond their careers.
Speaking of idols and their hobbies. JAY B has a lot, he likes scuba diving-he has a license too, reading, photography, tea brewing, riding a big motorbike, etc lol
I have a question - does richness matter while accepting someone as trainee and picking to debut? Also nepotism is a thing in kpop? If not , will it become a thing in future?
Not really but coming from a well off family means if the trainee failed to debut, they still have their family's wealth as a safety net so they can recover quickly for a different career path. But if a trainee from a poor family fails to debut, that's practically the end of their life because they're already too old to go back to school or pursue another career. That's why a lot of foreign idols are rich or at least middle-class, because their families could afford supporting them going into the unknown in another country
I don't think nepotism is a thing in kpop .because if a untalented trainee will debut ,netizens will eat her/him alive in internet.you can see ,when a member which is lack in something, how much they get hate.like lia from itzy, she was in vocal department and other were on dance department.
richness: no, it's not a factor why a company (especially a big one) picks out their trainees. But being rich will help you when you start training and even after debut, if all fails or problems pop up along the way your family can help you out; also: by the end, most kids who don't make it big have no money, no solid education and are deep in debt. In those cases, a rich family can somewhat take care of you/your debt and help you get some other jobs. nepotism: not in the idol industry, cause netizens have never been here for that, on the contrary, if u have a famous sibling or relative you'll have to work twice as hard to not only be seen as their sibling, it's not like in Hollywood or Bollywood. But it might help a little bit u if you wanna do something else in the creative field.
In my opinion you can't discount a persons background. Yes talent matters but at the same time I am sure a lot of these companies have behind the scenes agreements that never come to light with these chaebols or rich families. Debut my daughter and I will invest in so and so. 🤷♀️
I think a lot of stuff depends on the company and the idols themselves. Especially due to the pandemic, I'm sure things have changed for smaller companies. Part-time jobs, unsupervised live streams and so on
Question: How approachable are big/successful idols to another less popular idol? U usually see YG/SM/JYP idol interactions but ive always wondered if idols frm smaller companies would be a fangirling/boying to their more established peers?
there are lots of smaller groups who are definitely fans of bigger groups! i follow both big groups and smaller groups and ive seen a few interactions that smaller groups have with successful groups. Id say it depends on the groups on both ends, but the interactions ive seen have usually been sweet
@@sootekken ahh i see. But i wonder if they are also approachable enough to be friends with.. what i mean is, do they also interact backstage? What if a smaller idol passes by say, Jennie from BP or Wendy from RV, would they actually have a chance to strike up a conversation with them, or it’s more of a courteous hi & hello thing? Do agencies limit who the idols can talk to? Esp those boys vs girl idols?
@@regularjane1996 idols are for sure friends backstage! I can’t think of anyone specific at the moment but quite a few groups I follow have members that are friends with other idols; I remember a certain video of idols from different groups playing arcade games in waiting rooms for music shows. I don’t think agencies really limit idols being friends with each other, at least not anymore, because I see friendships like Pentagon Kino and Woodz, Ateez Wooyoung and TXT Yeonjun etc. And while I’m not as well versed with girl groups (I only really stan one or two ggs as of right now lol) I know that they’re also friends with each other, and there are some girl and boy friendships as well A lot of these friendships are from the different shows they appear on together, be it mcs of music shows or guests on variety shows, or even acting partners in dramas!
@@sootekken Ahh ok. I suppose it’s hard for these idols to have a social life since everything is so restricted for them, so i can imagine it must get pretty lonely too. But it’s good to know that at least they do get to have some semblance of it from all these interactions! Backstage must be quite chaotic then 😂 Thanks for the info!
H.O.T. are at the age to be married and have families. I would expect fans of 1st and 2nd generation groups to be happy for their idols who got married and have families. I love Donghae of Super Junior and I would be happy to hear if he was getting married.
I know I'm writing this 2 years late, but some of these comments invalidating Soobin's answers are kind of baffling to me. Like, even if you think her time in the industry was too short to be called an expert (which, I don't get as she was in Blady for around 4 years and lord knows how long she was a trainee), she still has WAY more experience than anyone here in the comment section. Not only has she been through the process, but she also knows others who have as well. Now I will grant that she can only talk about the things she's seen or heard, and given she was from a smaller company she'll be more familiar with that aspect, but that doesn't mean you can discredit all her answers. You don't have to be super famous to experience all of those things, let alone know people who have. Now, I'm sure if Dahyun from TWICE could sit down and spill the tea her stories would be different, but she's at a different level. I'm sure idols that high up are treated different and they can get away with things those in smaller companies can't, BUT there also is common ground. She would have had to go through the process, just like Soobin. She will have seen the dating, the surgeries, the fan culture, experienced the limitations given by the company....everything that was discussed here. It's just her experience would be more specific to her situation.
I honestly think fan service should stop because it’s making things worse. You can’t really ask delusional fans to stop being delusional and possessive when their idols willingly and even happily call them girlfriends, lovers, wifes. Idk if idols feel like they owe the fans to do these stuff but seriously there are so many different ways to show appreciation. The kpop industry seems like a nightmare, all we see are the visuals, the charisma, the fame, the Prestige, the money, the love and support. But it’s such a dark place, it’s dehumanizing.
If idols want to date and not have delusional fans then a bigger stronger boundary needs to be created. The idols should not be accepting expensive gifts from fans and saying things like "think of me as your boyfriend" and fans need to realise they do not have a say in idols private lives. At the moment it's messy because boundaries are being crossed on both sides.
The part with Idols getting some things done reminded me of that time when Yuta suddenly had a triangle shaped chin.🥲 I was so upset but I'm glad his square shaped chin is back😌
She's on alot of your shows....is Soobeanie really a special guest? She's really a co-host at this point! As for blackpink, I don't agree that YG has very little to do with their success and that it is their talent got them to this point. Blackpink's career has been closely curated by YG, from the type of music that is chosen for them, the way their videos are shot, the style of show they make for BP, the number of comebacks they have, who they collaborate with, their endorsement deals etc. There are a lot of talented kpop artists, some imo even more talented than the members of BP, but the key difference is the agency that creates the image. I have no hate for blackpink, I was a fan during their early years. I'll be honest, alot of hate for BP, comes from two reason imo. The first is nothing to do with BP, but hate against toxic blinks. The second is the perception that they gotten to were they are without effort, that everything is handed to them on a silver platter (they barely release music, they are just pretty faces etc). But for me, again, that is YG doing a great job driving their career.
BP had a huge head start because of YG, they got hype from Bigbang and being YG's new GG after 2ne1. So had BP debuted under another company, the concept and hype will be different so ofc
Right! They have little to no contribution in what they put out as a group, everything they do is closely curated by the company, they aren't even as active on social media or do vlives often where you'd say "oh they have a fan following bc they're close with their fans" it's none of that. And I don't mean it as a hate towards BP but there are groups that managed to stand out and get big despite debuting under a nugu company (bts, mamamoo, ateez too but not sure) bc they have a hand in their creations and don't receive everything on a platter. I just hope we get to see more of their talents as "musicians".
Let me guess, you’re an army? Makes sense because it’s the same tired excuses your stupid fandom used all the time. They’re not more talented than others who are less successful than them (aka don’t forget about mamamoo) or they didn’t work hard enough for their success (aka look at all bts documentaries and witnessed “true” hardship) 🙄Aren’t you lot tired of the same shit you keep feeding yourself and your co cultist on a daily basis about BP? Lol truth of the matter is you hate that BP became as big as they are without all the cheep tactics you all used to get BTS to where they are today. The mass buying, fake voting, VPNs, begging radio stations to play them… the sad part is, the only time bts made it into that precious #1 they’ve been salivating over all these years is when BP shattered most records with HYLT😆You were so threatened that you did everything under the sun just to get them that #1 before BP lol…but what to do? BP got to where they are because the fans just love them, they could care less about records or charts or trophies that was never their goal or dream…you idiots will keep talking 💩about them yet they’ll keep getting bigger with each comeback 🤷🏻♀️ one day you’ll learn to accept and shut up about it, or it’ll end up eating you alive and you’ll look back in 5 years and realize just how big of a loser you all were for hating someone who’s done absolutely nothing to harm you! You’ll realize that it was all your insecurities that made you hate and try to bring them down constantly. They’ll be fine, dunno about all of you though
I was watching the video and I remembered I dreamed that the bts RM went public saying he was going to marry a girl who was a pianist and he referred to her as "a talented pianist" I have no idea why I had this dream but 😂 If it happens I want it written somewhere 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think the stuff related to idols vary based on the popularity of the idols. The more popular the idol is, the more freedom they get from the company. They have control over their own work/life or anything in general. For example, artists like BTS, Bigbang (only using these two) have lot of power over the company, so the companies cannot control them. What Soobinie talked about implies more on rookies or idols that are not still on that position to have their individual power. So it sucks, how you can't have full control over your life unless you're successful enough to have that privilege over the company.
Not that we don't all know kpop can be on a different level, but some people here are pretending the western music world isn't just as controlling (on some levels, like dating, personality, styling, micro managing everything, overworking). Like honey, it's all of music, some companies more than others, some countries more than others. But it's not Just a kpop thing.
yeah if they think western music companies are "superior" i feel like it's just racism. Western celebrity culture is also cutthroat, just look at Britney Spears for example, or any celebrity that came out as queer. Or like, Disney Channel stars who have a purity clause. Or Hollywood sexual abuse, and even industry for the non-celebrities (such as stuntpeople, animators, and VFX workers being abused.) Or even other Asian countries... like mine. local celebrities in my country judged for switching religions, or bullied to the point of suicide. It always sucks.
I jst love the way she talked so smoothly and giving very suitable and reasonable answers to every question in a very diligent way who else liked the way she answered?
thats why i try to be as respectful as i can with every idol groups, the ones that i'm a fan of and the ones that i'm not, because they worked and are still working so hard to get to where they are right now. and at the end of the day, they're all humans and have limits so for all toxic kpop fans out there, think before you speak. idols already have enough pressure on their back, no need to add into that with your hateful comments 👍 anyway stan mamamoo and seventeen luvs
Imagine getting a few days off to deal with your mental health issue and your company has to declare that to the entire world or else they’ll think you’re pregnant or secretly married or some other crap. Like respect privacy you don’t need to know everything that goes on with your idol’s life
How/when do idols get permission/involved in the writing process for their own music/concepts/choreo? How do idols feel about developing parasocial relationships with their fans? If they are dependent upon them for their material possessions and emotional support but also will never truly engage with them I feel like that would give me a lot of guilt over time... What would you most like to see change in the industry and why?
from my experience following groups that go from company produced to self producing, it happens once theyve become successful enough and shown by helping with lyrics, composing, choreo etc. that they're allowed more creative freedom. it happened with pentagon, bts, and seventeen for sure. i also know that some trainees are handpicked to debut exactly for the fact that they show prowess in choreo or songwriting ( Pentagon Hui, Ateez Hongjoong and Stray Kids Bang Chan being one example for songwriting, all leaders as well which is an interesting thing to note ) as for concepts, it goes hand in hand with songwriting for some groups bc the songs they write will usually have a specific sound that goes with a concept that they might want to express; though mostly groups have a lot less say so for concepts, especially if theyre a group based in a storyline of some sort ( example being Ateez ) and of course both of these things vary from group to group, it all depends on what the company will ultimately allow for each group indiviually
What I get from that is that the toxic fan culture is obviously problematic, but clearly exploited and nurtured by the companies and idols themselves. Idols selling that "single, married to their fans" dream get more following AND gifts from them. The whole thing is pretty messed up on both parts... The market is so saturated. Without this system, most groups wouldn't make it or definitely wouldn't be that successful. It's not gonna stop any time soon...
I think kpop appeals more to a younger generation that's why the "love" tends to be on the selfish side. Like for example when I was 18 I hated when my stans date or get married because I fantasize about them. But then you get older and that "immature love" turns into the purest version of love- more respectful and accepting. Off topic but that's why BTS Army stands out because they not only have young fans, but of all ages who love them purely and wo judgment. Just total support. I seriously respect them. Maybe because I'm older, but the kind of admiration I have for the boys are not immature. I don't fantasize about them. I seriously want them to be happy.

This was so interesting and informative! Thanks very much for this! Being an idol seems such a demanding and uncertain career! I really empathize with those who dedicate their lives to it! Being an artistic/creative person is so misunderstood in many cultures! The demands of creation are high and many don't understand the sacrifices! I really feel happy for those who not only make it big, but for those who break even but do what they love! The dark side of kpop mirrors the dark side of artistic lifestyles I think, but to an extreme. Thanks again for this video!💗
This video is great but soobeanie does come from the perspective of an idol that unfortunately, despite being very talented, didn't hit it very big in the industry so we can't really take her answer for every single idol out there. I'm sure the perspectives of idols from different tiers would differ greatly. What is certain is that the industry is very difficult and I'm glad soobeanie managed to move on from her idol career to something she enjoys and has more control over
But her version is the closest one to the reality. How many groups do you think there are out there ? Try it more than 200 groups. Now, how many groups are famous and doing well ? Not even 30 groups. So, now with some basic calculations you can see that the big groups are the minory, therefore the perspective of someone who's failed the industry is most likely the right shot than someone's who succeed .
If I m not mistaken, it does seem like Soobeanie still has interaction or have social circle that included idols or.people working in that industry as well.
@@thetruthuntold924 That is true and her perspective is probably good to learn about for people who only see and hear about the glossy life of successful idols who do make up a minority in the industry

You can check out the Get Real podcast from DIVE Studios if you haven't yet. It's hosted by the idols I previously mentioned, minus Rose.
Is it irritating for stylists to be in your face all the time to put a single hair in place when you are standing still? I have seen that alot and wonder if it is annoying.
It's standard practice, it's not just idols but this happens on film sets and photo shoots as well. The expectation is for the idol/model/actor to look their best, because otherwise fans are screaming the hairstylist did the idol dirty because the idol didn't have perfect hair.
Well... I would think that it’s because everything about their look in photoshoots, performances and etc is planned, designed and taken care of so it’s understood by all parties
I imagine that it wouldnt be annoying since the idol knows that the stylists are just helping them to fix little things here and there to help them look better. I also feel like it's kind of fun to have someone take care of you like that xD
That helps to understand the plastic surgery thing. Jimin is the one that puzzled me the most. He looks different whenever a new promotion starts. Recent seeming more dramatic for his new album. I just couldn't put my finger on it, it's so gradual (im sure that's intentional). He looks absolutely nothing like when they first started. Even his skin color is so much lighter. This explains it, ha.
Are you okay? Of all idols jimin is one of the few who look exactly like his predebut photos. I highly doubt your feigned innocence of such a comment. Makeup and styling and for jimin especially I notice hair styling goes a long way, those hoop earrings he wears and when his hair is long on his neck in that kpop mullet style compared to short at the back make a huge difference as well. Of all members of even just bts he is the only one who doesnt look like he had work done, why 'fix' your entire face and not get a front tooth correction which he personally has said he doesnt even want to keep unstraightened. And for idols who actually do look different, in reality kpop stans would also accuse everyone in their own grad classes of getting plastic surgery too if they did not know them. And I'm not some offended fan or against plastic surgery at all, my two other favorite idols including all time favorite have definitely had work done.
@FaydraGirl I think that the changes you notice recently with Jimin are just makeup. It's amazing what these makeup artists can do. But also remember, there is just a natural aging process. Jimin had a baby face when he debuted because he was so young, and now he looks the same but just a mature young man. I don't think he has had any work done to be honest. And I like his cute little crooked tooth, lol.

i will never understand delulu fans that think they are “dating” these idols…firsty, you have to be crazy enough to think you’re good looking/have a good enough personality to even think you can date these people and secondly what on earth makes them think these idols who dont even know them are dating them??? i love my idols but more as a good friend i would like to see happy and successful, like i hope these idols are experiencing love or atleast getting laid with people they can trust, some of them are mid 20s to early 30s like cmon…imagine how depressing it would be if you couldn’t do such normal things without an insane amount of worrying. and even if they can, it must be incredibly hard for them to “connect” with or find someone that is genuine and wont sell them out (bc thats a thing famous people have to worry about too). it makes me sad and i hope this aspect atleast can change.

An idol dating a regular person makes sense...said every delulu fan 🤣

Idols work so hard to achieve dance, vocal, rap, styling, acting, and visual that they may admire another idol achieving great results w/ the same work. But it can become a competition or the hard striving of their work can be a problem for their relationships.
Gosh. Listening to these insights I can't help but think that being an idol is somewhere between the old Hollywood studio system and the Hunger Games. When it's your fans gifting you the things you need to live... Interesting video!
Yes! I was trying to think what was similar to being an idol and the old Hollywood studio system is a good example.
More like the Motown music system in the 60s
I'd also say the K-Pop industry is very similar to how American sports, particularly football/basketball, industry works. Particularly the scouting when they're young/in high school, signing them to a team (or in K-Pops case, a record label like YG/SM/Hybe), and then training them to maybe be on the starting line (debut). Players sometimes get injured, have controversies/scandals, dating scandals similar to K-Pop industry and they have to try to not let it impact their main duties or their fans start hating and become very toxic (which they already do towards other players/teams anyway lol). It's surprisingly similar.

I thought the same thing!!! We love that for our faves
Jyp was the first to do that with a twice member (mina). If you could get the fandoms to be really healthy the kpop industry would stop working as it does now, it wouldn't make that much money and there wouldn't be so many groups debuting every year
Yeah I agree. I mean the kpop industry is exactly designed to have that kind of fans..
Yeah, you would have a lot less groups and comebacks would probably be once a year or once every two years, similar to the western industry.
Yeah I agree

True...its all comes with the job 🙌

@@anikaabida6019 it smart yeah, but its attracting a very toxic fanbase that feels entitled to puppet their idols.

I also think the intense fan service makes some young impressionable fans think that their idols actually love and care abt them and then when a dating scandal breaks out it ruins the illusion bc the fans realise they don’t actually know their idols or what they’re doing
I also think like that. It's the realization that you've been lied to that hurts.

@@justmyedits6596 o so it is what it is called , thanks
Note: the hangul for it is

Hey! That is so true!!

That's everywhere though, for success you have to sacrifice and work hard
I wonder how idol life in Japan compares to Korea. Like, I know the whole idol culture and training system started there but I wonder what are the similarities and differences between the two?
". I started to listen to K-pop as an adult few years ago, and idols instantly reminded me of those characters I found in books or I just imagined as a kid/teenager."
That's exactly what it is.
I grew up in America and honestly the celebrities here aren't much different
My dad works for a VERY famous country music singer (arguably the most free industry on earth) who pretends to be someone completely different in public
Like he owns a jet, dislikes country music, talks crap about his fans and is not who he says he is at all
he's also not racist lol, despite that being his "brand"
his friends are all black and asian

Actually, I was hoping that idols will be as blunt as Jae. He isn't afraid to talk about how his company treats him. He has the balls.

It’s this western idea how one should be born talented, as if all this training makes your talent worthless
Lot of it stems from racist stereotypes and techno orientalism and I wish people will address this more.
Oh rightt say it louder!!!
I really hate it when western fans over criticized the system, which to the point where it may come racist/disrespecting the korean culture. Tbh me as asian, i can understand some rules, and why are they made like that but western fans are not it ://

"THE FAN CULTURE NEEDS TO CHANGE" absolutely!
About the dating thing I Would say companies are responsible for the obsession of fans 🙄

But rather than nepotism ,kpop is full of company stan.if they hate any company ,they don't even look for their new groups.
richness: no, it's not a factor why a company (especially a big one) picks out their trainees.
And while I’m not as well versed with girl groups (I only really stan one or two ggs as of right now lol) I know that they’re also friends with each other, and there are some girl and boy friendships as well
A lot of these friendships are from the different shows they appear on together, be it mcs of music shows or guests on variety shows, or even acting partners in dramas!
A lot of the English speaking idols are friends regardless of size of companies... because they share language and similar upbringing outside of Korea
i loved HeeJun from H.O.T. so much back in the day but now I enjoy seeing him and his family. If my favorite idols are happy, then I am happy too
H.O.T. are at the age to be married and have families.
And those are the things Heechul asked to his fans a long time ago. Now his fandom is the most peaceful and the most respectful one i've ever seen
The part with Idols getting some things done reminded me of that time when Yuta suddenly had a triangle shaped chin.🥲
I was so upset but I'm glad his square shaped chin is back😌
Ikr, I don´t know who thought that much filler would be a good idea, especially because the change was so obvoius
Exactly! I was confused when David implied that YG and BP are separate entities. No other record label could have created what BP has become today.
@@Daniella_M lol
I was watching the video and I remembered I dreamed that the bts RM went public saying he was going to marry a girl who was a pianist and he referred to her as "a talented pianist"
I have no idea why I had this dream but 😂 If it happens I want it written somewhere 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Actually, as long as you have signed/renewed contract, no matter how popular, your company decides your amount of freedom.
"they're constantly evolving" 😂
Thank you DKDKTV and Soobeanie! This was very informative and helpful.
thats why i try to be as respectful as i can with every idol groups, the ones that i'm a fan of and the ones that i'm not, because they worked and are still working so hard to get to where they are right now. and at the end of the day, they're all humans and have limits so for all toxic kpop fans out there, think before you speak. idols already have enough pressure on their back, no need to add into that with your hateful comments 👍 anyway stan mamamoo and seventeen luvs
Imagine getting a few days off to deal with your mental health issue and your company has to declare that to the entire world or else they’ll think you’re pregnant or secretly married or some other crap. Like respect privacy you don’t need to know everything that goes on with your idol’s life
I've been a treasure fan even before pre debut and most fans are so protective of the boys because most fans are noonas.. 😆
Being an idol is so HARD! Yet after suffering all of this, they still have to suffer from toxic fans. So sad!😞
Up
GD started the trend as idol songwriter and with light sticks and crazy colored hair... also he dates and doesn't care
I knew David was gonna say NCT, that’s a smart & safe choice😂
Great interview! Would love a second interview episode. So informative.
kpop idols need to unionize
Seriously! 🙌🏽
What does unionise mean?
@@farahanshaik8860 when workers in the same field band together for mutual aid and protection against employers, usually to strike or bargin for fairer working conditions or pay
Silly question; do they have unions in Korea?
Unionize....I have heard this word in chemistry
What is certain is that the industry is very difficult and I'm glad soobeanie managed to move on from her idol career to something she enjoys and has more control over
Yeah that's true
@@tenka2894 Her friend group includes BM from Kard, Peniel from BTOB and Ashley from Ladies Code (now disbanded) who is close to Rose from Blackpink. Tbh tho, there's a lot of idol insider content out there now and they all pretty much relay the same information without spilling any real tea for obvious reasons. You can check out the Get Real podcast from DIVE Studios if you haven't yet. It's hosted by the idols I previously mentioned, minus Rose.
THANKS DAVID FOR CHOOSING NCT . YOU KNOW THEY ARE THE COOLEST AND NCT GANG IS LEGENDARY
Given the taboo around mental health I think it was good that Twice Mina and Ateez Mingi got time off for anxiety, I hope it helped them a lot ♥️
Is it irritating for stylists to be in your face all the time to put a single hair in place when you are standing still? I have seen that alot and wonder if it is annoying.
it also must be annoying for the stylist when the idols dont stay still when they're trying to do their job
It is called professionalism, for both sides yk
I imagine that it wouldnt be annoying since the idol knows that the stylists are just helping them to fix little things here and there to help them look better. I also feel like it's kind of fun to have someone take care of you like that xD
That helps to understand the plastic surgery thing. Jimin is the one that puzzled me the most. He looks different whenever a new promotion starts. Recent seeming more dramatic for his new album. I just couldn't put my finger on it, it's so gradual (im sure that's intentional). He looks absolutely nothing like when they first started. Even his skin color is so much lighter. This explains it, ha.
skin color is just from makeup and editing, most idols just use bb cream or foundation in lighter shades + bright white lighting and editing
Other idols: compelled to follow company rules
Then there's Jin: "I don't listen to the agency" only #Jinhit
😂
Reminds me of yesterday when he was sleeping on the zoom call while the rest had their faces on screen
@- navis -
Lol
@- navis - LMAO! Chill bruh. We know that when it comes to bigger rules, Jin abide with those. And excuse me? "by making fans obssessed with BTS" The only people I know who're obssessed with BTS & ARMY are the haters! They follow them everywhere in every platform, even disliking their videos as sson as it's released 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@- navis - Bruh, take your debate somewhere else. If you're looking for a perfect industry, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, that one doesn't exist. You better get rid of the whole musical group 'you like" and live your life the way you want it.
@- navis - Burh, i did not even read all of your long reply because you and I won't get anywhere with a debate. It won't change anything in the industry nor the company you are hating. Plus, I've been an ARMY for quite a while and I have encountered a lot haters attacking BTS and Bighit, yours don't make any difference no matter how much you pretend to say you like them. I'm tired picking up trashes in the internet. So do believe what you believe. We ARMYs know better than just random mantis. Ciao!
Exactly fans culture need to be changed
Idols can date, they can interact with idols of other companies ,male idols can interact with female idols too
Male idols aren't your boyfriends , you get that ?? you crazy fan girls !!
Let them atleast do what they want to do
You can't control them just because you're a fan of them and you buy their albums lol
I don't see any of our international fan girls having problems with such dating and interaction stuffs and all
i will never understand delulu fans that think they are “dating” these idols…firsty, you have to be crazy enough to think you’re good looking/have a good enough personality to even think you can date these people and secondly what on earth makes them think these idols who dont even know them are dating them???
i love my idols but more as a good friend i would like to see happy and successful, like i hope these idols are experiencing love or atleast getting laid with people they can trust, some of them are mid 20s to early 30s like cmon…imagine how depressing it would be if you couldn’t do such normal things without an insane amount of worrying. and even if they can, it must be incredibly hard for them to “connect” with or find someone that is genuine and wont sell them out (bc thats a thing famous people have to worry about too). it makes me sad and i hope this aspect atleast can change.
Jokes on you I consider myself good-looking... only this
