    I just came across your videos and had to say a massive thank you for providing detailed and genuinely realistic advice! Foolishly, I had been thinking of leadership in the literal sense this whole time so that was definitely an eye opener. Your other points about the personal statement were also great - so thank you!

      My pleasure tender chicken (probably the best name I’ve seen on YT btw) 😂😂😂. Glad that I could help a little and good work for working on your portfolio early. I always thought of it as a working document that you can be added to and constantly improved so the fact that you’ve got examples and put pen to paper is great 🙌. Good luck with your portfolio and application this year and for GAMSAT it you’re sitting that soon too 🙌

      @@DylanAppelqvist any advice on how to preference, I haven't got the best GPA and gamsat score and am a bit confused about what unis I should preference higher. Been looking into it

    • @DylanAppelqvist
      @DylanAppelqvist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GorillaTech28 Difficult for me to answer but if you google: grad ready minimum requirements you can scroll and have a look at the minimum reported GAMSAT scores and calculate your combined score (GPA, GAMSAT) to find out where you would be competitive. Not sure how accurate these minimum scores are as its not official but you will see that USYD typically has a higher minimum GAMSAT than most and uses GPA as a hurdle. Portfolio univeristies also weight the portfolio differently so if you have a strong portfolio you can afford to have lower GAMSAT, GPA scores. Bear in mind the minimum GAMSAT scores on this site likely mean that the applicant had a very high GPA or great portfolio. Hope this helps :)

    Such great advice! Just a random question. I’m in year 11 this year and I was wondering what was your path from high school and about your atar? Does that affect your path?

    • @DylanAppelqvist
      @DylanAppelqvist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      My ATAR was 87.65 (good not great) and definitely not enough for entry into undergraduate medical school (usually 6yrs). Instead I had to take a different path doing an undergraduate degree in something else (I chose medical science but you can do any Bachelor's degreee). From there you need to get good grades at uni and sit an exam called the GAMSAT (there is also another exam called the UKCAT but im not sure of the deats on this). After finishing your bachelor's degree (usually 3 years) you can apply for postgraduate medical school (4 years). So overall you end up becoming a doctor in 7 years provided you get in to medical school straight after your bachelor's degree (i did not do this). So overall my whole journey will take 8 years of university (3 years bachelor's degree, 1 year of research, 4 years of medical school). I hope this makes sense.

    Hi! I am curious as to what your thoughts are about including your results from high school or other degrees in the academic achievement section? I did well in high school and did a year of health sciences before transferring into my current degree and this influenced my decision to undertake medicine. I haven't had any experiences in research or won any awards during university, my grades are good, but I feel a bit like an average Joe haha so I'm trying to think about things I could fill this section with. Thanks!

    • @DylanAppelqvist
      @DylanAppelqvist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally get your dilemma and trust me I felt like an average joe too! I think if you have more recent examples than highschool then use those but I did use one highschool example in my portfolio (leadership section). Remember to focus on what you’ve learnt from the experience. They know you’re smart so saying you got a particular grade doesn’t say much, especially if it’s from highschool. If you talk about how you prepared, the discipline it took, curiosity, acquiring knowledge, overcoming adversity, etc then this shows your character so focus more on these aspects. Hope this helps 😊

    Hi Dylan :) thanks for the great tips and advice! Was just wondering if you would know what kind of questions the universities ask the references? Or do they just call to verify if the applicant is being truthful about what he/she said?

    • @DylanAppelqvist
      @DylanAppelqvist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Catherine thanks so much for reaching out. I'm not sure on this one. My feeling is that if they do call they are calling to confirm that you participated in the activity and that your participation matches the duration and role that you had. Hope this helps and good luck :).

    Can you please tell me which subjects should I choose in my 11th and 12th grade in order to get into Med-School? I'm good in cell biology, Mycology, Animal and plant physiology, Genetic engineering,
    I have done My BS in Microbiology in Afghanistan but our Education is too weak, I want to start from 11th grade after moving to Australia . Guide me which subjects I should choose to study in high school that can help me to get into Medical school. Waiting for your reply thankyou .

      @DylanAppelqvist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kashang, I didn’t do medical school straight from high-school so I’m not sure exactly what subjects would best suit. My best advice is to speak with the school careers advisor or look at the pre-requisites from the specific universities you wish to apply to. Best of luck
