- Hey everyone! This is another of the med school application breakdowns where I look into the process for Griffith uni in QLD. I know pretty much nothing about this uni until researching for this video so it was super interesting. Let me know your thoughts in the comments

Hey, I'm Jesse, I'm a professional private tutor and founder of Simplified Study Tutoring. Since 2011, I've been helping students take a simpler approach to their studies and educating people in anything from science and maths to English and economics. I also recently sat the GAMSAT in March 2021 and achieved one of the highest scores in the sitting (84) and a perfect score of 100 in the science section. Hopefully, those are credentials enough to give this video a good watchin'.

Thanks Jesse - your application videos for different universities are super helpful!
Hi Jesse! Love this series - it really demystifies a lot of the processes. Thanks so much!
2 questions (sorry if you've answered them somewhere and I haven't had a chance to see):
1) Do you know which schools incorporate Master's degrees and other completed post grad GPA's into the final GPA calculations?
2) How does one approximately calculate their GAMSAT score if you do a practice test at home. Any tips? I know essay correction is a bit tricky unless you have someone look it over but for section 1 and 3, perhaps?
Thanks so much once again for all this wonderful content!
Hey Maryam! Really glad to see its helping. To answer your questions
1. It varies from school to school. Some don't consider it at all for GPA purposes, others consider Masters and not others and so on. It's best to check through the GEMSAS admissions guide for the GPA calculations and 'Key Degree' sections of each school
gemsas.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2022-Medicine-GEMSAS-Admissions-Guide-v1.5.pdf
You may also have to check the separate admissions guide for non-GEMSAS unit like Sydney and Flinders
2. It's pretty difficult to estimate a GAMSAT score with much accuracy given it depends on the test questions and the performance of the cohort each time. On top of that, ACER use item response theory so there are weightings to different questions and a lot of behind the scenes magic that we can never know. As a very rough estimate in my practice, I used a normal distribution with a mean of 43.55% and a standard deviation of 14.06% to calculate a percentile which I then mapped from the latest GAMSAT distribution curve and this was relatively accurate (although it probably exaggerates scores on the higher and lower ends). I've included this in my study tracker template which I run through in this video and there's a download link in the description

The flaw is that it uses the overall score distribution for estimating individual section scores so I'd only use it as a very rough guide.
Hey, so I'm looking to apply using my masters degree. This is what GEMSAS told me for 2025 med entry:
The following schools use postgraduate study in GPA calculations -
· ANU will include Graduate Diploma and Masters by Coursework results in the 3-year GPA calculation if the degree is completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application
· Deakin will calculate the GPA on the most recently completed three years FTE of study, including Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters by coursework if successfully completed by 31 July 2024.
· Griffith will calculate the GPA using the most recently completed qualifying/key degree/s (a Combined Bachelor/ Masters, Combined Bachelor/Postgraduate Diploma, Masters by coursework; Masters by Research; or PhD) if completed by 31 July 2024. Griffith allocates an overall GPA of 7.00 for completed PhDs (when it is the most recent qualification) and a 7.00 for each full time year of a completed Masters by Research (up to a maximum duration of two years). To complete the 3-FTE years of study when using a Masters degree, the next most recent qualifying/key degree will be included as required.
· Macquarie University will calculate a GPA including Graduate Diploma and Coursework Masters, if this degree will be completed by 31 December in the year of application. Completed Higher Degree Research Masters and PhD will be used in GPA calculations if completed at the time of application.
· The University of Notre Dame will calculate the GPA on the most recently completed 3-FTE years of study including qualifications at Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters by coursework level, if completed by 31 July 2024.
· UQ will accept completed Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and PhDs as standalone qualifying/key degrees if successfully completed by the 31st of July in the year of application.
· UWA will use Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters by Coursework in a 3-year GPA calculation whether complete or incomplete. Applicants with completed PhDs will receive a GPA of 7.00.
· University of Wollongong will include Graduate Diploma and Masters by Coursework results in the 3-year GPA calculation if the degree is completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application.
Hope that helps (:
What about if Masters by coursework was completed part time and graduated in 2018? but the undergraduate degree was over 10 years ago?
Hello Jesse, extremely helpful videos. Do you reckon you can do one for interviews. Good luck on your application. Thanks
Hey, yeah I might aim to do one a little closer to interview offers. I’ve only ever sat the melbourne MMI back in 2013 so I’m a rookie when it comes to interviews so I’ll have to do my research haha. Good luck to you too!
Waste of time, just go to OUM.
Can you do one of these for Flinders University Doctor of Medicine entry? Thanks
Yep, that's on my priority list. Sounds like a popular one and it intrigues me too
Thanks for this video. Same as you I had never heard about this uni either. Good to know about the entry requirements. 😊
Sorry to Griffith Uni if it sounds like I was throwing shade at you 😂
Hey Jesse, first of all thanks man, your videos are very helpful. My question is will Griffith accept 1.5 years of Masters degree and count 1.5 years of GPA from my bachelors?
Hey Deepak, best to double check this but from the admissions guide, if it is a standalone masters by coursework then your GPA will be calculated from the final three years of your bachelor's degree only. If it is an combined bachelors/masters degree then the final three years of study inclusive of Masters will be used for GPA and must also be completed by July 31 of application year.

Yes that sounds about right (:
Hi, i am currently an internation students with a gpa of 5.4 and a gamsat score of 60 what are my chances of getting in? Also your video was really helpful :)
Thanks Jesse!
How the med. quality there, thanks for the video btw : )
Can't comment on it because I don't study there but generally the quality of medical education is agreed to be equal across all universities in Australia
