As a first year driver, I can certainly appreciate your kindness in that situation. I've been in some tight situations (never hit anything) and when another trucker helps by spotting or something else, it means a lot to me. We all start from somewhere and I highly doubt anyone was God's gift to trucking when they started out.
That Swift driver was having a really bad day because now he has to report that and that will be on his record. A simple act of kindness can really make a difference, especially in situations like this. Thank you for being an example to others and being humble enough to help.

I've been on my own for two weeks now, and because of the stereotype associated with Swift drivers, whenever i pull into a truck stop pulling that Swift trailer i get a bit anxious. I'm pretty okay at backing, and with every backing i get a bit better. I live on TH-cam watching backing videos looking for every tip i can find. Anywho, thanks for being out there. About a year late, but just caught the video. You rock man. Most truckers today spend most of their time picking on the dudes that are having a hard time out here. I give you well due respect as a trucker for what you did in this video. The last time I stopped to help another driver out, I got in big trouble with my boss for getting involved in another drivers issues. The flatbed trucker got caught up in a violent thunderstorm in the middle of the night, out along I-40 in OK. He had a load of mulch on & the winds from the storm blew his tarp off & loosened his straps on the load of mulch, which resulted in many bags of mulch being dropped along I-40, before the guy realized what had happened & got stopped. I was a head of my scheduled delivery & seen the guy trying to salvage what he could, so no questions asked, I stopped to help the guy out. My truck computer squealed on me to the dispatch office that I had stopped & beings it was out in the middle of nowhere, they wanted to know what's up. I told them I was stopping to help another driver out & man, did it hit the fan. Screw it. What the boss don't know won't hurt him. We are all human & make mistakes. When we see others with problems we should be helping each other out. Between the 2 of us we were able to salvage most of the mulch before it got hit & ran over by other cars & trucks. Together we were able to reload by hand what was salvageable & retarp & secure the load. It took us about 4 hours. Bossman was pissed but after a face to face with him, we seen eye to eye on a lot of the issues. It didn't cost him anything for me stopping to help the guy out, just like it didn't cost you much to help Swift out, about 6 inches of airline, a couple zip ties & about 20 minutes of your time. That all went to good use. Bless you.

We had to go farther down to unload another truck because the guy couldn't back up. Not sure how he managed to get a CDL.

Those who catch it are not angels or the smartest it's just a second of luck that they caught it. After many years of driving with no more errors you are going to forget that you did a mistake, so when you see someone or a rookie do the same mistake tell me what will come out of your mouth with 20yrs chip on your shoulders mixed with some pride n arrogance. i've said it before and i'm sure i'll say it again in the future... just because someone is driving for swift doesn't mean they are automatically a bad driver
swift is a giant in the industry and they hire people with zero experience, and they hire a LOT of them
and being that they are such a large company, they are just more visible than smaller companies so it's "easier" to find drivers doing things they shouldn't... part of that blame goes to the new driver, part of that blame goes to the "trainer" who just used them for mileage and didn't actually teach them a damn thing

Swift drivers get far more training then I got starting . When I was new I had to do everything slower & think about what I was doing before I did it. It's just common sense & patience that these driver lack . A CO the size of SWIFT can't be choosy on who they hire, they have to many seats to fill.

The reason why these swift drivers are so bad is from what I hear is once you finshed with your training you can BECOME a trainer which means he could have SIX MONTHS experience so it's like blind leading the blind

    • @davidmiles
      @davidmiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@zebo3531 just because someone has years of experience doesn't mean that they're a good trainer. It comes down to how well they understand it and how well they can teach it.
Ideally a more experienced driver would be a better teacher, but that's not always the case.

First, I am not a trucker.
We had a food delivery one day. The trailer had drug the air break lines and it had a hole in it. The driver was trying to fix it. I suggested a piece of mud flap and a hose clamp. I put it on the line and the driver aired up the line and everything held. Got him on the road back home.

Everyone starts somewhere. I started with Swift right after school. I worked there 16 Months. That was 15 years ago. Still accident free. Swift pays what they pay because they have a lot of repairs to pay for. These new drivers have to learn humility and patience then they can learn to drive. It takes a little time.

As a former swift driver, honestly. Its less the driver's fault and more the company. Their training is rather nonintuitive, and my trainer only sat in the passenger seat and yelled at me for a week never explaining anything. Then for 3 weeks after only slept in the bunk. I learned more being out alone then I did with him.

How to properly set up for a spot. However, im used to the international i used to have, which is notorious for having a shit turning radius, i now have a 2017 freightliner, which has almost the best in the industry turning radius, i have a problem with me getting back in front of the trailer actually faster than im used too.

Should not cut up Swift too much, it is a training company and most only get like 6 weeks or less with a trainer and then they cut them loose. I trained Flatbed for them for 3 years and what I found is the better the trainer the better the driver that is produced. Great Karma helping out, be safe and keep the rubber side down driver!

I just applied for swift. Had my Class B for years but want to go OTR now. Know when I told recruiter I worked on a farm backing wagons up on a farm she was happy and trying to get me signed up asap to get my class A. Often pulled 32 ft flat bed trailer behind pickup (nose to tail was 32ft). 20ft deck 5ft tail, 7 feet of tongue. Glad cops never got me. Had that trailer loaded over 10k pounds often with logs.

A couple of weeks in school and they turn drivers loose with a 80,000 lb missle. First thing I learned was clear EVERY turn in your mirrors. A driver side accident like that is really bad. If you don't trust your mirrors yet, just turn your head and look.
