I am team steam chicken!! 6:45 The auntie waved at the camera!! So cute! Also a tip, instead of steaming the rice dumplings, submerge the dumplings in boiling water to warm it up. The dumplings will come out nice and won't stick to the leaves. ^_^
I wondered if anyone would spot her little wave. So cute. Thanks for that tip, I have re-steamed before and we’re all sticky. Have to remember that next time.
Bak chang is actually wrapped in reed leaves. The shape, leaf wrappers and filling vary a bit from province to province in China, more variety than our local ones. I saw many variations being introduced once in a Chinese tv programme on Dragon Boat festival (aka Poet's Day /DuanWu festival). Lo Mai Kai (Cantonese glutinous rice with meat/mushrooms etc) is wrapped in lotus leaf though.
Circuit rd is my favourite lunch and dinner place as its near my workplace. The hawker centre is bustling at night too, good vibes surprisingly in this old neighbourhood area.
They sure do love it here. We’ve been looking at Google maps and picking a place we haven’t been before. Some of the lesser known spots, which we’re finding are worth going to.
I am a steam chicken girl as well! Have you tried the Boon Tong Kee Restaurant version? I had it the last time I swung by and liked it a lot. My friend also recommended Wee Nam Kee in Novena.
How fabulous, one thing we really love about Singapore is the absolutely fabulous food, just where locals eat, we found a Hawker Centre somewhere in the depths of Chinatown area, were the only tourists, not People's Park, we found that as well. Looking forward to the new channel.
Circuit road used to be my childhood playground as my parents used to sell duck rice at the hawker centre and always long queue. For Bak Chang, my fav is the nonya dip with chili sauce. However, my mum makes the best Hokkien Bak Chang with salted egg yolks. I remember our neighbours in our ex neighbourhood used to order from my mum and the fillings are better than what you get from the stalls.
@@WONDERLUSTworld she still make though it takes a lot of prep and sometimes we told her not to make. Last year during the Duan Wu Jie, she made like 30ish and some sweet bak chang too.
Alot of people are saying the Hainanese chicken rice at Golden Mile hawker centre is the best. Our local famous good blogger Zermatt Neo just uploaded a video of it today. Do visit the hawker centre it has lots of nice food and know for it. There's even the only Columbian chicken stall over there. One the best tulang over there too. I think Jonty is familiar with this dish. But do check online before going as it was in the papers recently that the chicken rice owner is ill and the the stall might be closed for awhile.
We saw your comment tonight - thank you for the support! We also started @walkingwithwonderlust for all walk and no talk… and Jonty’s topical channel is going well too - @jontytan - THANK YOU!
@WONDERLUSTworld You should check out that area since you guys love hiking and nature. Lower Pierce reservoir and Upper Pierce reservoir is nearby. So is Upper Seletar reservoir where it's well known for its sunset. Thomson Nature Park and Spingleaf Nature Park is nearby too. There is a nice outdoor Cafe at Springleaf Nature Park which you would love. Latest I googled a few minutes ago the Cafe is permanently closed but I hope it's false news. I wanted to recommend you that Cafe long time ago🥲 If you have the energy still then the Windsor Nature Park is a few bus stops away where you can go to the Treetop Walk.
Gawd, as I am watching you both eat the Kim Choo bak chang, I suddenly have an urge to go out and get one myself! I simply love the nonya chang, and yes, that's because I'm Peranakan too. My late grandma used to make killer nonya chang... special XL size with generous servings of pork and also chestnut inside. I really miss that. Btw, Jonty, did you try to get tissue packets from the drinks stall at the kopitiam before heading out to the supermarket? Most drink stalls would sell them.
We had bak chang again this week for dinner, the kids had them too and loved them too! Ah we didn't think about getting the tissues from the drink stall. Now I have lots in my bag!!
@WONDERLUSTworld Great. Looking forward. Your Malacca trip was nice. Bring the kids to Genting Highlands while they are still young. I'm sure they will enjoy 🙂
@WONDERLUSTworld Alright looking forward to your Malacca video again. Can't remember if you did visit the Jonker Street bazaar on Fri till Sun night which you should visit. Hope Jonty can recommend some good Pera Peranakan restaurants over there since he's a Peranakan😊
Hello friends, I always feel intrigued by your amazing videos, hope you guys have a blessed & fun week. 😊 Hope we stay in touch. Have you guys done your Christmas shopping? 💜🎄

Ghim Moh market is highly recommended ! i suggest going on Saturday late morning... and its a lovely neighbourhood too..
Ooh, thanks for the tip! We've been looking for a good neighbourhood to explore!

Oh nice. What do you like to eat?
Hi Wonder lust you makes me drooling especially the Nyonya chang or Bak Chang 😢
Haha 😛
Yes, is the place where my childhood. I used to stay in block 38. Thanks for this episode.
Oh lovely! Has it changed much over the years?
We're fans of steam chicken too! 😍
It’s just so good!
Love watching their videos and thanks for sharing. Some places i dont even know 😢.
The kids look so local now. Hope they love SG.❤

Wee Nam Kee is good!!! But Boon Tong Kee not so good these days....
Yes
Go explore into the heartlands to dine like a local. Makes sense
Absolutely! The places tourists should go to experience the REAL Singapore!
The chicken rice looks so fragrant & flavourful. 😊
It was a very good one.
@ Where is the chicken rice stall at? 😊
Mattar - I think 78 Circuit Road!
@@WONDERLUSTworld Thanks so much for the recommendation, friends. 😊
You should really try the chicken rice at Katong shopping centre. It is the best in Singapore in my opinion. Your dad will love it.
Ok thanks!!

thanks, i will the area soon.

I'm pretty sure that the drinks stall in just about any coffee shop or hawker centre do sell tissue paper.
Very true...
Go to an old Crawford hawker ctr behind ICA see if you like some affordable lunch and some old school desserts good stuff there . Hokkien mee I like
Thanks for the suggestion. Keep them coming!

The best foods are usually the ones where locals are, far from the city center, and far from the need to feel "professional" :>
Agreed. We’re enjoying finding these spots.
Do u know y its named circuit road? (Hint: F1 isn't the first race in Sg)
Oh really?! Thanks for sharing that.
I thought the first F1 race was at Upper Thomson Road?
Ah after looking on Google it does mention Thompson as first road race!
Sembawang it's for motorcycles racing in those days, suzuki yamaha

Err, changs are always wrapped in bamboo leaves; not lotus leaves. You’re mistaking loh mai kai which is wrapped in lotus leaves.🤓
Ohhhhh!!! Thank you!! Glad to know this!! 😊
And if it's Nonya Chang, it's wrapped in pandan leaves, though some (the not so authentic ones) use mix of bamboo and pandan leaves to save cost..
@ ah bet the Pandan leaves give a nice flavour too.

Must try Briyani by Hamidah Bi. Probably best in Singapore.
Oooh where can we get it?
I was curious and googled it and its at Circuit Road hawker centre@WONDERLUSTworld
Thanks!
I saw a queue at Chinatown hawker center & I joined the queue thinking the chicken rice would be good but unfortunately it was disappointing 😂
Oh no!!!
2:23-2:25
Sales lady: "Do you need a bag?"
Jonty: "No need."
Man, you sound so Singaporean now, despite your clipped British accent! Lol...
Haha it sneaks in

A non tourist trap hawker center , cheap and good.
Exactly! Just pure good food.
I can confirmed that the chicken rice these days are seldom as flavorful as they used to be. Popular places like Tian Tian are really not very tasty.

Pin Xiang Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Bedok Central, and Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice on Balestier Road.
