  • It's taken a little while to actually post this, due to life being very busy, but now that we are in lockdown and can't run errands, I have finally uploaded a new video. Brian and I discuss what life has been like for our first week out of MIQ in NZ. This is a longer video than we usually post, but there was a lot to say! (FYI we left MIQ July 26)

Welcome guys. I hope everything you experience here in New Zealand is positive. It's always interesting getting to view our country via the eyes of someone from overseas. No place is perfect and we have our issues but after travelling the world for a few years, I can say that the problems we have here are minor in comparision to many other countries. It all depends on your own perspective and what you value in your lives to make life "worthwhile and fun". Thanks for this update. Lets hope this "lock-down" doesn't last too long and you have a chance to explore your area of NZ. Keep up the updates. "Auntie" Jacinda will look after our best interests. Cheers.

Kia Ora and welcome to New Zealand. I stumbled across your video and it brought back so many memories of what I felt when I moved here 25yrs ago from Chicago. Just remember to breathe. NZ is a great country and I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Loving your videos. We lived in Plainfield Vt and arrived here April 9th. I'm a Kiwi and my wife American. After 38 years in US we came back. Our daughter moved here 5 years ago. She was the pull, Trump was the push and covid was the shove. We are so glad to be here in a land of sanity. Good to be home. Keep up the videos.

@@ZoomiesAbroadHi, We are living in Whanganui and loving it. Before we moved back to the States in 83 we lived in Dunedin and really loved it but it.s too far away from our daughter in Auckland and brothers in Northland. NZ is not perfect but it's freaking awesome.

Kia Ora and welcome! Thank you for being part of our health system. I hope Level 4 Lockdown is going ok for you! I love the vibe and coffee at the Dispensary at Dunedin Hospital. Loved hearing that you are moving to St Kilda. Dunedin is very dog friendly with a dog park not that far away in Forbury, S Dunedin. Also, you can walk along the beach to St Clair with its cafes, all of which are dog friendly. St Clair Open AIr Salt Water Swimming Pool opens Labour Weekend in October, for the summer season. It's heated to 28C and has a great cafe too which and outdoor space for dogs. For coffee: the Salt Water pool (Allpress coffee I think) and Starfish cafe (Supreme coffee). Hope you continue to settle in well!

IRD stands for inland revenue department, best bank in the south is tsb , cooperative bank, kiwibank or ANZ , Subaru are the most stolen car in nz , hands down so make sure you have an antitheft device , even a steering lock, Dunedin is a small place so there won’t be as many large stores as say Auckland , and if you have borrowed with a finance company for the car, refinance with the bank, much cheaper interest rate .

Plus you can sleep in the back of the Subaru, you’ll need for weekend exploring. Yeah for some weird reason Indian food is awesome in NZ. We had the best Indian food we’ve ever had in Gisborne also. Sounds like youre still on US speed (re grocery stores and finding everything immediately) you will eventually slow down and breathe, sleep, don’t stress unwind slowdown

Things are slowly calming down (lockdown has helped), so we are able to enjoy life a bit more. And yeah, the Indian food....so good!! We have some theories as to why but mostly we are just enjoying it!

What you call 'zee' is 'zed' in NZ. We don't use American spelling norms, we use English,
I too emigrated 59 years ago from the UK after considering just about everywhere else in the world. It was a bit of a scary leap into the dark and travel by ship much slower, it took six weeks to get here instead of a couple of days. It was the best thing we didm as far as I'm concerned, this place is paradise! Sure we have our problems but life in general is good, we are laid back. relaxed and easy going.

I feel a lot of the time when New Zealanders ask "Why would you want to move here?" is more of a low key way to hear new arrivals talk about how great it is and get a feeling of if the people are going to assimilate into life here. New Zealanders are great at "Beating around the Bush" which is asking indirect questions to get a feel for people without being too direct and rude.

After listening to your chat, I’m sure you’ll fit in well. You already have a Kiwi mindset.
It will be interesting to hear your views re our little dot in the South Pacific.
It will be quite a change no doubt... no dangerous fauna, virtually no guns, national healthcare, news focused TV, different foods, different customs...

Welcome to New Zealand! Just want to point out that we have our own crazies, and people who distrust the medical field etc, so don't be surprised if that happens. But generally, most of us are decently educated (i hope) and won't spew that kind of stuff. Also remember that there is also some rural/urban divide just like any other country, and so everyone has differing opinions. But yea, everyone generally is open your opinions

I hope you are going to continue to have good experiences in NZ, and wish you all the best. Thank you for adding one more to our nursing numbers. I'm glad that people in Dunedin are making sure that you feel valued as a nurse. I'm surprised that your employer didn't have all the banking and IRD help organised, and didn't help with finding accommodation. Or did they and I missed it? I did my training in New Plymouth many years ago, and at that time nurses were virtually on a pedestal, but I guess times have changed. From what I hear, lockdown will be a different experience too. Cheers

I felt the same thing when I first lived in the US (I'm a kiwi). I broke down in tears one day and hid under my blankets because everything was so exhausting. I couldn't work out the phones, I didn't know where to find things, the food was different, I didn't know where things were and the foods I normally got at the supermarket weren't there Everything was the same but different. Everything I knew and took for granted didn't work in Kansas. I didn't take long to became a native.

I understand your target audience are those from the US, but from another immigrant to NZ, try to remember that the US is NOT the norm. Elsewhere nurses are invariably recognised as one of the most trusted professions, invitations to come over to visit your house is expected, and to have true conversations without prejudice or demands is normal. Treating, what you call a “foreigner”, any differently from someone else is alien to most people.
You will find not everything in New Zealand is to your liking but keep in mind your previous experiences are broadly out of kilter with the rest of the world. Generally most people have been bought up to be humble and accepting of differing views, not that they live in the “greatest country in the world”.
Welcome to one of the most beautiful countries with genuinely friendly people.

Hi guys. Welcome to NZ, sorry you landed in level 4. But it is what it is - welcome to the team.
Fun fact - not sure if it’s true or an urban legend of sort, but the story goes that St Kilda was actually named St Hilda beach back in England who at the time were our mother country and stenographers. Apparently the ink on the initial document got wet and the H became a K somewhere between England and here. Does kind of make sense as there is a St Hilda’s school in Dunners as well. Enjoy!

Take things slowly.Rome wasn’t built in a day (and neither was Dunedin !)
Allow plenty of time to view several properties before making a decision if you plan to buy a house.
Of course it’s cold right now ! We are in the middle of winter. Also, you are right at the bottom of the country. After Invercargill and Stewart Island,it’s next stop Antarctica. Is it as warm in Alaska as it is in Florida? ( Sorry…..rhetorical question ! )
Seriously though, I wish you a very happy future in Godzone., and I look forward to future vlogs, and possibly photos of your new dog.
Take it easy, and thanks for sharing your experiences.
    Regards from Taumarunui.

Thank you! We come from a very cold place in the US, so we actually don't mind the weather right now. It's warm enough to go outside and not freeze, and to stay active. We hope to pick up our future dog when lockdown is over, so you will definitely be seeing a lot of photos of her!

3 Indian places worth a look in Dunedin imho.
Chill Dharba in South Dunedin. Forbury raceway building.
    Mela Eatery George St CBD.
    Indian Twist Mornington.
If you're living in city rise Mela Eatery is close it's very small indo-Nepalese.

My wife and I are looking at a move in 2022 to either the Burlington, VT area or the South Island of New Zealand. My wife is a veterinarian so we have a path into New Zealand on the critical purpose visa and a path to residency with the 2021 one off residency visa. Would love to talk with you about Dunedin versus Burlington. Please reply if you are interested in sharing your experience with us. We will be making a decision in the next 1-3 months. Thanks.

We’re moving to Hamilton in a few weeks. I was wondering how you were able to purchase the vehicle with the CPV visa? We’re running into a snag there because of the time frame of it

righto, not sure if it is promounced 'duneden' but 'dun-eden', also, it's not 'subaru', its 'sub-a-roo'. No matter, you will lose that American edge soon enough. LOL

How did you adjust to the driving differences from US?? That scares me the most.

    • @ZoomiesAbroad
      @ZoomiesAbroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Very carefully lol. With a lot of saying out loud ..'turn left, stay left' and things like that. Roundabouts were very confusing the first few days of driving, but now are much easier. It helps to have someone ride with you to help remind you of where to turn, etc.
