    Good to see you have finally emerged, like butterflies from a cocoon. 8-)
    I've previously recommended kiwiamericans to you. Tara did a video on her experience with the NZ health system, which you have probably seen. She also did a much more recent one, in which she actually got quite angry about the stress and cost of dealing with the US healthcare system, compared to NZ, and she is even doing a follow-up edition, so possibly she will become even more agitated and mount an even taller soapbox. But what she is angry about is exactly the kind of reaction you had to the possibility of you having a medical problem, not knowing what 'the system' was, and fearing that it could be very, very expensive. In particular, kids can get very sick very quickly [which is why the field of paediatrics exists], and when that happens you want your child to be seen by a doctor as quickly as possible, except that in the US that can also be ruinously expensive. What you just experienced in the hotel is actually the norm in NZ and Australia in major cities.
    If bubs had needed urgent medical attention, he would have got it immediately, any necessary tests would have been done, if he needed hospitalisation, that would have been arranged [and you would accompany him], any hospital procedures would have been performed, under COVID-safe conditions, and there would have been no cost to you. As Tara at kiwiamericans can attest, it's hard for Americans to believe the NZ system actually works that way, until they experience it for themselves. Fear of healthcare is not a thing in NZ.

      It's a beautiful thing! I have seen her videos on healthcare. It's just crazy to actually experience it for yourself. It's the best feeling in the world bringing my son here - knowing he has access to free and good healthcare, we don't have to worry about school shootings, and also people love children here. I feel luckier everyday.

    • @Becca.Loveless
      @Becca.Loveless  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man! That sounds like it'll be hard. But at least at that age they can enjoy things by themselves, like games and drawing. Our ten month old isn't really in to anything yet, so it was up to us a lot of the times to entertain him or make sure he wasn't trying to kill himself when he was exploring on his own. And yeah, coming here was the best decision we've ever made. So worth it!

      @@Becca.Loveless So true! We're hoping they can keep doing their online kindergarten from here too, which will keep them busy! The school here has been pretty accommodating. Our senior is studying for AP exams and will have to take them online in the hotel room we've just found out, and hubby is working remotely, so it's going to be either super productive and pass the time quickly or turn into some sort of circus (a bad one!) Luckily, I'm an optimist! On that note, did you find a house? I've heard theres a huge shortage of housing but we've been able to rent an AirBnb for three months over the winter for after quarantine, so that might be a good option for you? Apparently with the tourist shortage, more Airbnb hosts are willing to do that, and it is furnished, which is brilliant! Our oldest is very excited to go to Auckland University next year so we want to do a bit of traveling and have time to find something more permanent for housing. I grew up on Waiheke so we're keen to move back there! Anyway, its nice "chatting" to you. I've been thinking about doing some vlogging for a while now so it might be a good time to start just to document things for myself and for the kids when they get older! Your baby will love seeing this footage when he's older! And what a great job you did keeping him busy and safe! Good job Mum!

    • @Becca.Loveless
      @Becca.Loveless  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kiwicowgirl07 Let's meet up when you get here! We have Waiheke on our list. And MIQ really isn't so bad. I don't know - we didn't think so at least. I talked to another mom with a 12 month old and she said it was the worst two weeks of her life. I guess it really depends on a lot of circumstances. I think we lucked out with a decent hotel.
      We did find a house to rent. Signed on it today, actually. It was a nightmare and I'm still pretty stressed out the whole situation, to be honest. I wish we had done something like the three months of an airbnb because we needed more time. We almost signed twice because we were so desperate but looking back on them now, one was a total scam and the other wasn't very suitable for a baby. We really like the house we got, but I'm always worried about how "nice" the landlord will be and we don't super love the location (a bit further out than we were hoping) but I think it'll all be okay.
      Auckland University sounds amazing! I keep wishing I could go back to school.
      And do start vlogging! I felt so goofy about it to begin with but it's honestly so fun. My husband and I both enjoy editing them, and when you're in a beautiful place like New Zealand it's so easy to film everywhere. And I know both my son and I will love having these memories saved.

      @@Becca.Loveless I would love to meet up! I’ll find you on Facebook (I have a weird last name so you’ll know me when you see it lol!!!) I’m glad you found something you like. And I’m feeling better about MIQ just finding another Mum who made it through - I connected with another one a few months ago too and she said they did ok with five people. Honestly it’s been so bad here in Oregon that we can suck it up for two weeks to get back to some sense of normal especially for the kids. My wee boy cries about online kindergarten at least once a day - it’s heartbreaking. And yes you should definitely come to waiheke and meet people there too! There are tons of fun events too like the art walk!

    That picture does look like seaweed -- giant kelp in particular.
    Feijoas are originally from South America. Some people refer to them as the socialist fruit because a mature tree produces far more fruit than a normal family can eat, and lots of people end up giving huge amounts away.

    Yes anything to do with healthcare in the U.S. sucks. The system is beyond broken. Insurance companies run the medical system here and tell doctors who to treat and how. How can a little country like that take care of it's people and we can't? If you have a baby in New Zealand you get 472 days off paid! 372! In America o paid days off. 0 and if you take some time off to be with your child there's no guarantee you'll keep your job. Sad and sick.
