🛑Holy crap, I am so glad you have that skin diagram thing. I feel like my entire life I’ve been living a lie after watching this video. Thank you so freaking much for educating me. This explains why I have chemical burns, I’m using too many acids mixed with chemical exfoliants and harsh bead exfoliants at the same time! My dumb butt stinks that when I get one or two pimples that I need to go to the store and literally buy every single acne spot treatment product there is and try all of them in one day and then I end up with a chemical burn. . Also I have a question, my skin was great through my teen years in early 20s I am now 33 and starting to get very weird acne not only on my face but my scalp as well, it’s like my water retention has slow down or some thing. Can you help with that? Thank you
I had a similar problem... Until a girl in a shop suggested me to cut sugar and dairy... It worked like magic! Its been 10 years since then and I never had to use a product again. Now I only get pimples (really bad cysts like the ones I used to have) when I eat sweets several days in a row.
@@anja6548 yes this or a chemical exfoliant in a cleanser or a separate method use the chemical exfoliant 2-3 times a week and search and do not layer them up!
@@jacks4705 Not for me, I've done literally all of this and now after a 3 month course of antibiotics, I am now on oral accutane, hopefully this will clear up my skin - perioral dermatitis and adult acne :(
I love how you don't "demonize" wrinkles. Actually, it's healthier for our minds not to do so. We can't fight aging process but we can grow older in a better and smoother way. Don't be afraid of wrinkles, people. Let's make them look better. Nice tips. Thank you!
Fighting aging is trying to catch the wind with your fingers. I wish my wrinkles were not so noticeable but I know that growing older is a privilege many of us do not get to do. I've lost several friends , one was beat to death by her husband and another died at 32 from cancer. Every day we get is a gift. The grey hair and the wrinkles are just part of the process. I just laugh and be myself.
@@Littlewildone0 I’d rather die early than be unattractive.. JMO of course. Some people find life worth living at any age. Not me though. I was done with it at 35.
@@kateg1570 I hope not honey. I's a beautiful world out there and loads to explore and learn. My grand ma used to tell me Pretty is as pretty does. If you have an ugly heart no amount of physical beauty will make up for that. Amber Heard comes to mind :)
People love to hate on something, Cassandra just said you need to be mindful of what you use and don't overdo it. She literally praised retinols in this clip. Don 't stop using retinols or BHAs, they are good, tested ingredients. Use them wisely. Going to "natural" or replacing retinols with oils is not what she meant
Hello Cassandra thank you so much for this video. Companies don't really care about the costumer they care about their profits and their shareholders. Some companies do create amazing products but there will always be someone that gets a reaction or the products do not work for them, WE CANNOT HAVE A MIRACLE product that works for everyone that is why there are so many companies and so many products to choose from.
This is so true. We also have many different companies bc in theory competition is what forces improvement and innovation. And who knows if that really works. Ultimately it always comes down to money no matter who you are. I wouldn’t be pessimistic sounding if more people had access to proper skincare routines and education on better self-care and ultimately proper nutrition. And while there is availability of all things to all people, they aren’t told or taught how to access it. Some end up not understanding their skin and instead spend what they have on cosmetics. Society as a whole needs a revamp on what it thinks is important in life. That’s why I love this channel. Cassandra is teaching and exposing her viewers of all ages to variety of things that truly matter when it comes to skin health and our self-identity to it.
Except for vaseline lol, and silicone (if you're not allergic which is extremely rare.) (Silicone is used for scarring, even old scars, and in the ER for wounds.) Those are the closest miracle treatments there are, but they don't have a good PR specialist lmao. Also the second is in everything still or used as a callout ingredient... even though it's literally used for burns in the ER. (It's used mainly for texture in products as dimethicone and other -cones)
As a day one butterfly cyst-er, the transformation your skin has gone through is truly incredible. And as a fellow esthetician I so love your approach to educating and not making it feel pretentious
Thank you!!! For saying what I've been saying for YEARS! Retinol, benzoyl peroxide & a few others really damaged my skin when I was younger and didn't know what i was doing. From careless dermatologists to bad physicians, I damaged my skin to the point I have lots of fine lines at the age of 25 from ruining my skin as a teen struggling with acne. I was caking my face with harsh ingredients and none of my doctors or derms told me to even use a moisturizer with them.... #notalldermsaregood
I totally feel your pain, I took harsh medicine to cure my acne and my doctor didn't bother to explain anything to me, after 8 years I suffer from a lot of symptoms .
@@Erraiad they like to throw some pills at you, put you in a corner, and it all goes away right? They had me on antibiotics (on top of the creams) for years and now I'm resistant and had ulcers because of it. How a derm/Dr treats you really does depend on how much money you have sadly.... if they're not making serious cash of your ass you're f*cked. Plus how long it takes to get into a derms office is crazy (6-8 months for my insurance) and you might see them 1-2 times a year. That's BS
SAME BOAT!😭I'm only 27 but my skin looks so much more aged than my 54 yr old mom simply because of poor advice from doctors throughout my teens! I was on accutane from about 15- 17. NO-ONE told me about SPF, and I was an active sports person swimming and playing tennis in harsh, sunny South Africa. The amount of sun damage is wild. Disgusting that I only learn of proper skin practices and how ill-advised I was, only much later in my twenties🙌🤦🏿♀️
@@veronicaphiri7432 not all is lost. Laser treatments, religious sunblock use going forward and retinol should help. I’m also mad that sunblock wasn’t encouraged in my family but as an adult I learned to never go in the sun and my skin is great
You know, I think you're the reason that I started being interested in skincare. Even my dermatologist said that she feels like I know what I'm doing, so thank you Cass! I am on accutane so there isn't reason for me to dry out my skin any more, and since I started really taking care of skin barrier it looks amazing, it's so smooth.
One of the products I absolutely love to use especially if my skin is extra sensitive or I overdid it with my retinol or an exfoliating product is the Purito Centella Unscented serum. It has centella extract, peptides, ceramides, and niacinamide. It’s found on a lot of sites and it’s affordable. It’s just something that I’ll probably always have in my routine because it’s just that good and such a lifesaver for me.
I've incorporated the uncented toner into my acne tretinion routine and it works like magic! so soothing. I am skeptical about the serum, would mind sharing specfic results you got?
I started a routine where ill use a glycolic acid serum one night and then the next night i dont use an active and then the following night I use a retinol serum and then the next night is another break and its been working great for me. I also put cerave healing ointment lightly around my eyes before putting on the actives because they used to irritate around my eyes and dry them out no matter what I did. This process has done wonders in a matter of a week for me. No more irritation and acne and dark spots are healing up really nicely. I wish it was talked or taught more on learning about your skin and whats its telling you and how to care for it. If there was I’d probably have realized much faster my irritation was a damaged skin barrier and not a chemical burn or allergy. Thank you for the information you give it really makes a difference.
Oh man, thank you so much for this video! I damaged my skin barrier while using retinol and a salicylic acne wash last year. I was using the salicylic acid twice a day and the retinol intermittently. The damage showed up not too long after I quit the retinol (the retinol was causing me acne in places on my face where it usually never happens). At first I thought I was getting super dry skin. When it wasn't going away in the summer, I realized I caused some damage. After I met with a dermatologist, my skin is finally starting to recover. He told me I have sensitive skin and mild rosacea, which makes so much sense now. I've eased off on the salicylic acid, and now I'm focusing on the basics (moisturizer, sunscreen, gentle cleanser). I only cleanse my face once a day, as you've recommended.
I did this combo like 2 years ago ; I got break out everywhere , my skin gets so much worse , and my skin was peeling off and red ! Ehh . It was a nightmare !!!!!!
I used to use a lot of acne products when I was in my teens, knew nothing about skincare, and I had to stop using most things because they BURNED my skin. At the time I really didn't know why that was, or if I was doing something wrong. I now know a lot more about how to care for my skin, but this is still very interesting to hear, I was completely damaging my skin barrier, and as someone who naturally has very sensitive skin... Yeah, it was not fun.
i feel this. there really wasn’t the best information out there for us to be able to make good choices for our skin back then. i used to think that if it burned and stung my skin a product was working. that if my oily skin was left dry as a bone, it was working. i tried all the home remedies you can think of too. from putting toothpaste and nail polish remover on my face, to a straight lemon 😂 skincare really has come such a long way!
I can’t use AHAs BHAs and PHAs. Tried it consistently for months and it ruined my skin. I wish it was purging but It never stopped. Once I switched to Azaleic acid, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and mild hyperpigmentation products like tranexamic acid, as well as low % of niacinamide and alpha Arbutin, my skin is finally calming down slowly. Once I stopped buying into trends and created a routine that allowed my skin to heal and get used to actives & mild chemical exfoliants 1-3 times a week instead of everyday, my skin was so grateful.
I've stopped doing anything for my acne, I discovered that if I kept my skin moisturized and healthy the acne decreased. I can't use most of the stuff others use right now, and my skin was just so horribly irritated and dry from the over the counter stuff I was trying, and once I gave it up the bumps on my forehead disappeared and within a couple of weeks the pimples and cysts stopped.
This topic recently became relevant for me. I seem to have damaged my skin barrier with some of the products I was using, in combination with mechanical abrasion from wearing a face mask for long periods of time. It gave me some sort of an eczema on my cheek which wouldn’t go away for a few months now, no matter what I tried. I decided to go on a ‘product detox’ a few days ago and only use water until it heals. My aunt recommended chamomile tea (topically), so I’ve been applying tea bags on the cheek for a few days now, and believe it or not, it looks like it is starting to heal :) From now on, ‘less is more’ for my face, and will only be using moisturiser and oils once this thing heals.
I used BHA on my skin for about a whole year without using any type of moisturizer or hydrator, only sunscreen once a day. That was it for about a whole year. After I stopped using the BHA because it got rid of my acne, the areas where I used to apply it would become really red at random times. I had no idea why, until I did some reading and discovered that I indeed had completely damaged my skin barrier using the BHA without anything to balance it out. It's been about 3 years and my skin still gets super red in those areas (bringing out the acne marks too!). So yeah, be mindful and careful with your skin barrier!!!!!!
I am learning so much from you every day, Cassandra. I am currently using a Salicylic acid wash in the PM (only washing my face at night) and I am still trying to find moisturising products that work for my skin, because my skin gets giant pimples when I try to add a moisturizing ingredient. Honestly a little frustrated with it but I am trying my best to find something that works for me
i just started a prescription tretinoin and had done a lot of research, as i am a nurse. i would LOVE a video that explains how to correctly use tretinoin products and how to take care of your skin through its purging (for myself, a lot of redness and dryness in my nose and mouth area) phase and how to strengthen the skin barrier or repair it while on topical tretinoin. thank you so much, i LOVE your videos!!
I've realized less is better. I'm sticking with a micellar water, and vanicream cleanser (only if I have makeup on) and a simple moisturizer. I will use a dead sea salt to exfoliate my skin 1x a week. I might add a 10% chemical peel 2x a month. I don't think I'm going to use a retinol anymore.
I'm concerned about retinol but can't give up either. My mom noticed I have much more freckles and dark spots nowadys and it's because of sun damage. Ive only used tretenoin/retinol alternate days but now I've decreased it to every 3rd night. Ive used sunscreen diligently everyday but can't reapply often when I'm out. Im so torn.
I've tried retinol, AHA's and BHA's for my acne. Retinol burned my skin really badly, AHA's seem to really irritate my skin. My skin absolutely LOVES BHA's though! My salicylic acid toner is the only thing that seems to work for my acne. I guess it really depends on everyone's skin :)
Does anyone know can AHA+BHA toner and retinol cream TOGETHER damage the barrier my forehead is peeling (for the 1st time ever my skin is mega oily + I have redness)
i use la roche posay effaclar serum and noticed my skin clearing up, but I developed dry itchy patches and some little red itchy dots. So after some research I found out it might be I have a damaged skin barrier. So I still use the serum, but I'm topping it with the la roche posay cicaplast baume and my skin is clear, smooth, hyperpigmentation free, blemish free and I dont get new pimples.
I was using TLC Framboos for years with no issues. Decided to "switch it up" and tried the Sunday Riley Retinoid Serum. It destroyed my skin and it still hasn't recovered. This was probably a year ago. And just recently I was diagnosed with rosacea. So I can definately attest to the title of this video!!!! 😣
I am very grateful to have found your channel. Some of the products you recommended were game changers for me. My pores are clear and my acne has improved so much, I didn't believe it was possible. Also the educational value of your videos is so high and it has helped me so much. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I've found myself in the same predicament. I have sensitive skin and every time I try to incorporate chemical exfoliants or salicylic acid face wash, my skin ends up p1ssed. Add winter and all I can tolerate is Cerave wash and lotion, along with Glow recipe avocado serum and LaRoche Posay cica balm
question.. i want to try that glow recipe serum how does it feel on your skin? does it sticky & lightweight? i have large pores and I'm concerned if this thing will clog my pores.. thank you in advance..
I really look forward to the next video. We can google the ingredients but I'd like to know the products that have them and are not irritating for a sensitive skin or for people using acids and retinoids. Good video
i can honestly say ive learned more about my skin and what products work for me in the last 2 years by watching your videos ( and james welsh) than i ever learned from ANY dermatologist. I use to feel so disappointed when ever id leave a dermo appointment cause it was always the same thing they would always say, give me stuff that was too harsh for my skin and just burned it and never solved any issues. i tried so much different stuff over the years and always felt disappointed that my skin would either burn, breakout, or just never look good. I wish i found you sooner cause here i am 32 years old and finally understanding my skin, knowing what products work, which to avoid and finally feeling like my skin is no longer a burden or something i need to hide! thank you so much for doing what you do and giving us not so perfect skin peeps REAL information that we can use!
had the same experience! used to go to a derm since i was 8 (got acne very early) and they all kept prescribing me products that burned my skin (as in, it hurt a looot) and made it extra sensitive and super oily. literally astringents/exfoliators/acids. they NEVER told me to use sunscreen or moisturizer. i’m so glad i stopped going when my parents realized this was going nowhere, and found out about proper skincare routines on the internet. now my skin has drastically improved, it’s basically clear except for the old scars and a few whiteheads that come out when i eat too much sugar. cleanser/moisturizer/sunscreen is a godsend! now i also added a retinoid product for the night routine and rose water for the day routine (makes my skin less oily somehow and i spray it on after makeup) and it’s great, skin is not as oily as before. i feel like some derms just have a partnership with brands because they just kept prescribing the same products no matter what i told them and no matter how my skin reacted to it so glad for you that you found something that works for you, it’s never too late!!
@@TheFaro2011 but they didn’t deal with it in my case. they made it worse each time i went to see a derm, and i went to different ones in a span of 10 years so that’s a lot
I use three kinds of serums and alternate them, one day I use retinol, next day Niacinamide, and next day Tea tree serum, (obviously with all the skincare steps: cleansing-toner- serum- eye cream-face cream), it works fine for me, I have a friend that likes to apply retinol serum everyday and I think maybe it's too agressive, but to each their own.
Used appropriately, after a dermatologist consultation, these products are fine. Retinol is meant to be phased into, lowest concentration 2x a week, increase as tolerated. If you have any kind of skin concerns, best to visit an actual doctor, not google or Sephora.
I was so excited when I started using pixie glow tonic, and then tarte knockout (biologique recherche dupe), Ann’s then biologique rexherche p50 1970 a few years ago. Damaged my skin barrier and made it look so much worse than it did to begin with. I won’t use acids again, just not worth it to me

Hi Cassandra! When you say use things like green tea. Do you mean drink more of it or use it topically? I would like to know coz I am from a tea growing country and we have purple tea that has more antioxidants
retinoids are so popular on social media, and even though regarded as the holy grail, i know so many people myself included where it just did more damage than good despite being very careful. It left a permanent discoloration on my tzone, constantly oily, peeling for years. my skin looks so much better off retinoids.
Hi Cassandra! Great video! I love the way you talk about the skin. I suffer from adult acne but also dermatillomania, and I have a hard time recognizing my skin for the incredible organ that it is. On most days, it's nothing more than a source of frustration, disappointment and poor self image. But going back to the basics, learning about how it work, what it's made of, what it does for us is actually really helpful for me in fighting the urge to pick and adopting a more caring approach instead. So thank you for the efforts you put into those highly educational videos, they are truly making a difference in my life.
MEGA RECOMMENDED: Avocado ceramide serum from Glow recipe hits the mark on all of your points. My skin never recovered from acutane (always red and reactive) even 4 years later although is less now. My skin lovvvves it.
Hi Cassandra! I’m curious to know what you recommend for people with cystic acne caused by hormones. I’ve always been told by various dermatologists that Salicylic Acid is the best for cystic acne because it’s so deep, but after watching this I’m left feeling a bit confused. What’s the best way to approach this without further damaging my skin?
I had the same problem but with sensitive skin, I used emu oil and it helped reduce the swelling which helped with the pain and it helped the healing time. For it was about a week but for my step daughter hers healed almost over night
for hormonal acne, you’re gonna also need to address the root cause, ie the hormonal issue. go to a doctor and/or derm to talk about that. the pill is the most common way to minimise hormonal acne. it doesn’t work for everyone though, so try out numerous ways to treat this to find what works. i got on the pill for hormonal acne and it did help, but not quite as much as i would’ve liked. so skincare like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and general spot treatments have helped. as mentioned in the video, go slowly, use low concentrations of ingredients before working up to higher ones if you want and use sunscreen and a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.
@@laur83 very true , I cut out dairy and nuts and that made all the difference! I also started probiotics. I had hypothyroidism which I manage thru diet. It seemed to hit on my 30th bday which was also the same week of my father's passing so major stress can trigger your thyroid
For hormonal acne if you don't want to do birth control a derm can prescribe spironolactone at a low dosage. It is a diuretic so keep that in mind. For me I saw a 95% drop in cystic acne and I used both salicylic wash (am) and benzoyl peroxide wash (pm). Finally and as a game changer in cme Vitamin A, I went on adapalene and then eventually Tretinoin. Now I am 99% free of breakouts and if I get the tingle implying one is starting I will apply an adapalene/benzoyl peroxide leave on called Epi-Duo. Finally a ceramide and fatty rich moisturizer at night and a lighter version for me Cerave keeps the skin barrier nice and plump. I add some drops of TO Resveratrol and Feurelic for the antioxidants and voila!
@@laur83 True, Cassandra is warning us about not overdoing it which means frequent and excessive use, higher percentages, multiple layering of actives without proper knowledge, over exfoliation and not giving the skin enough time and care to heal. Trust me I'm loaded with salicylic acid, retinoids, niacinamide and benzoyl peroxide. But I use one active at a time and always follow it up with a barrier supporting moisturizer. Although actives have helped diminish active breakouts, the barrier friendly ingredients have lessened the instances of having more pimples in the future.
You’re my new favorite! I’ve been watching beauty vids on TH-cam for like 10 years but just recently became a skintellectual lol. I like how frequent you upload
As it recently happened with make up, skincare has reached delirious levels. It' s common sense that skin just needs: (if there' s acne, first find a derm and get 100% rid of it) cleanse, moisturize, saintscreen and one or two actives wich target our needs or issues. Pure retinoic acid (not processed OTC derivatives) *CORRECTLY* used after 25. Stop overlayering.
I have acne rosacea! I've tried all the common products you see online. The ONLY products that feel good for my very very sensitive skin are simple micellar water, sukin sensitive rose face wash, rio rosa mosqueta rosehip seedoil and sometimes their intensive night treatment. I've never enjoyed going to bed and sleeping with anything harsher than that and my body and skin thank me for it in the morning :) x
This video is exactly what I’m doing right now in my skincare game!!! I upped my use of exfoliators ( I also use G&G Agame 5 retinal and facetheory’s Azelaic acid) so, I’ve actually been slowly getting antioxidants, ceramides and fermented ingredients. I just got the Mary&May Idebenone + Blackberry complex. It comes in an amazing serum and a cream that has 5 ceramides and niacinamide. I use Missha time revolution fist essence as well as Dr Ceuracle Kombucha essence and Pyunkang Yul calming cream/balm and I have some Illiyoon cream and I just started looking into CCLIMGLAM Cerabiotics and Numbuzin #3 serum. Looks promising. Lol that’s just so funny you decided to do this right as I embark on this goal. Thanks for the video!!! 💕
Hey! I forget if you have a video on why the sun is bad for our skin? I get many confusing messages about it…it’s naturally good for the skin? Yet, it’s not? Only 15 minutes of sunlight? Need more clarification please😭. I’ve been watching your channel for years. You’ve helped empower me so much!! Thank you.
I’m so happy I found your channel. It had completely changed my skincare routine. I used to think I have to use all the actives like retinol, acids, …. And my skin got irritated and red. Now I have changed it entirely. Every evening I use a retinal 0.1% cream. I know it’s rather harsh but the formulation of the product I use is amazing. It actually gave me less irritation than basic retinols. Then I use the cerave thick moisturizer at night. That’s it. In the morning I use a niacinemide and galactomyces toner and a HA serum with sunscreen. Personally I tried the Mikey list vitamin c with egf and it rly didn’t do anything. Then I went and started with a really harsh vit C and it wrecked my skin. So if anyone has recommendations for vit c that aren’t too weak and not too strong I would love to hear them 😊 Now my skin is the best ever 😊 thanks so much ☺️☺️
Building muscle uses the same concept. Work out to break them down, give the muscles time to rest and rebuild stronger than the last time, then repeat.
Omg, I'm finally seeing wrinkles begin to be created on my skin, due to dry weather and heaters on blast but I almost bought a retinol. Maybe I'll get herbivores bokchoy serum for something gentle instead. Or hyrams skincare line, selfless beauty. I've been diligently using sunscreen everyday since last summer. I'm 24 with acne prone skin, of I even look at a picture of milk, Imma breakout.
Get a retinol please. She literally preaised retinoids in this clip and said how amazing they are. It is probably one of the best and most researched ingredient out there when it comes to skincare. It just needs to be used in a smart way without mixing and matching potent actives in the same routine.
Cassandra! I love you! Your presentation in this video was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed it and learned so much from it. Thank you so much for all you do to educate us and at the same time make us roar in laughter.
8:46 are you saying that sunscreen keeps acne scars from setting in? Or is it just due to it blocking the sun? Or does sunscreen have other benefits? I'm confusion
Hi Cassandra. Thanks for your amazing and informative videos. I'm kinda new to skincare and I've been confused lately. Here's the question: Do I need to doube cleanse non-tinted SPF or is it just makeup that I need to double cleanse?
i wish to try glow recipe avocado ceramide recovery serum and my skin type is oily, acne prone and sensitive. for someone with large pores, do you guys recommend it? how good is this chic?
Thank you for alerting us to this information!!! I feel like trusting my skin and how it’s feeling/reacting is much more important than pushing through the irritation. Wow. 🤯 Wondering if there are any layering best practices while using the barrier protective and anti-oxidants while using retinoids/acids at the same time. 🧚🏼♀️✨
This was so helpful. Thank you! I've been using the Mochi Toner by TonyMoly and it has ceramides in it, along with the Beauty of Joseon Green Tea and Panthenol serum and they have been really helping my skin. I had a horrible outbreak of hormonal acne and was prescribed Monocycline along with tretinoin. Using the kbeauty toners, serums, and moisturizers has helped my skin to stay hydrated and healthy despite how drying tretinoin can be. This video really helped me understand my skin and the things I put on it so much!
Thank you. You listed these 3 types of helpful substances. Should they be all on 1 product or is it only possible to get separately each? And are there any particular product for Day use? If overnight I use adapalene.
Wven with skin cycling my barrier waa damaged. But i got it nailed down by making sure to pair the exfoliating , retinoid days with hydrators/moisturisers (serum, toner) as well, like shwet masks Otherwise my skin would burn using these actives..
I just found your channel. Yes, I've been living under a rock LOL! I am in awe! You are amazing. I just saw your reaction video of your younger self 10 years ago and I'm sending you a BEAR HUG!!! 💖💖💖
Dr. Dray would disagree. It’s all about how you responsibly use Retinol & SA. Be conservative about your product use and don’t forget your sunscreen guys.
But Dr. Dray is not a good source. There are much better, less problematic and not excessively sponsored Derms that see patients on a daily basis here on TH-cam. Like Dr. Shereene Idriss, just to name one.
@@angelachristina Dr Dray is a certified dermatologist. How is she not a good source? Because she is very honest about skincare and vocal about how toxic the industry can be? Okay go off random person on the internet who doesn’t have any validation to have that say.
@@onedudethelegend I also love dr. dray but just because someone’s a dermatologist doesn’t mean they’re always a good source cuz I feel like everyone’s skin needs are different and if someone relates more to a different dermatologist and their recommendations then that’s better for them. I shudder to think of the things i used to put on my face......i had very oily skin during puberty so i just didn’t put cream on my face 🤦🏻♀️ on my pimples i used toothpaste, aftershave, acetone!!! I abused my skin
I have eczema aside from from my horrible cystic acne and the pictures on the thumbnail is what my skin looked like when i used tret omg that was so painful :(( no matter how i used it it flared up my eczema. so sad that tret didnt work for me so im on accutane now the last option that i have
I was prescribed (by a dermatologist and to help me deal with melasma) retinol at night and vitamin C for day-time. My cheeks got red, like burned after 4 days (she told me to use them on a daily basis). Now, it looks like a sun burn. It never hurt. Just unpleasant to see. I did use SPF50. I stopped using them. Will my cheeks recover? I am hydrating 200% for now and I am afraid to go back to the dermatologist.
Thank you thank you thank you. My skin has been freaking the hell out thanks to my IUD and everything I have been doing to try and fight the horribly painful cystic acne I now have as an adult, has been drying out my already dry and sensitive skin. This has been such a struggle for me
How does skin keep healing and grow beyond a scar? For example, keloids, hypertrophic scars, the skin keeps healing and forming layers upon layers, how do you explain that? Are there any treatments to breakdown the scar tissues from forming repeatedly? I don't see any experts on this. It should be on research more. Other than kenalog/steroid injections, are there other ways to revert back the "over healed" skin?
question. during the daytime some days i don’t even leave my house. should i still be applying SPF? i know they say windows the uv rays can still get thru but i have the blinds down usually or i have the little slits open but my house doesn’t get much sun on it the way it’s designed and placed.
Always wear sunscreen, but indoors especially with blinds you can reapply way less than when you have your windows wide open all day or moreso when you go outdoors.

Now I only get pimples (really bad cysts like the ones I used to have) when I eat sweets several days in a row.
you should use azelaic acid instead of multiple applications of exfoliating acids

I love how you don't "demonize" wrinkles. Actually, it's healthier for our minds not to do so. We can't fight aging process but we can grow older in a better and smoother way. Don't be afraid of wrinkles, people. Let's make them look better. Nice tips. Thank you!
So true the only ugly wrinkles are from looking sour , so love yourself and get those smile lines!
Or… get some Botox. My mind loves my wrinkle-free forehead!

She really looks flawless, doesn't she?
I’m also mad that sunblock wasn’t encouraged in my family but as an adult I learned to never go in the sun and my skin is great
@@kateg1570 unfortunately laser treatments are way above my pay grade.
Love it too!
My skin can't do niacinamide, but in the same line they have a hydrating toner that is really great too.
I've incorporated the uncented toner into my acne tretinion routine and it works like magic! so soothing. I am skeptical about the serum, would mind sharing specfic results you got?
@@thecarmen7182 it's really really good
I started a routine where ill use a glycolic acid serum one night and then the next night i dont use an active and then the following night I use a retinol serum and then the next night is another break and its been working great for me.
I only cleanse my face once a day, as you've recommended.
how much did you pay for a dermatologist?
I did this combo like 2 years ago ; I got break out everywhere , my skin gets so much worse , and my skin was peeling off and red ! Ehh . It was a nightmare !!!!!!
I've really loved rosehip seed oil, I have cystic acne and it doesn't break me out.
yes me too!!!!!!!

OMG same..using products and masks ..I got horrible cystic acne..now just focusing on repair after which I will tone down skincare products too :(

A protected barrier is a must for the cysters!
Honestly a little frustrated with it but I am trying my best to find something that works for me
rosehip oil is SOOOOO good for my acne/rosacea skin!! Honestly it's a lifesaver :) x
i just started a prescription tretinoin and had done a lot of research, as i am a nurse. i would LOVE a video that explains how to correctly use tretinoin products and how to take care of your skin through its purging (for myself, a lot of redness and dryness in my nose and mouth area) phase and how to strengthen the skin barrier or repair it while on topical tretinoin. thank you so much, i LOVE your videos!!
I'm having the same issues😭 did your skin got better?
I've realized less is better. I'm sticking with a micellar water, and vanicream cleanser (only if I have makeup on) and a simple moisturizer. I will use a dead sea salt to exfoliate my skin 1x a week. I might add a 10% chemical peel 2x a month. I don't think I'm going to use a retinol anymore.
Dead sea salt scrub sounds bad, use retinols, but do it wisely.
Dead Sea salt sounds horrific oh my god
I'm concerned about retinol but can't give up either. My mom noticed I have much more freckles and dark spots nowadys and it's because of sun damage. Ive only used tretenoin/retinol alternate days but now I've decreased it to every 3rd night. Ive used sunscreen diligently everyday but can't reapply often when I'm out. Im so torn.

Why does it sound "horrific" as you stated. I make sure it's somewhat dissolved without the particles scratching my face.
I stopped using Differin because it made my skin too fragile and was causing damage, especially because I live in a very cold and windy climate.
What about the adapalene? Does it irritate your skin too?
Yeah retinol does nothing for me other than smell weird and bead up.
Does not play well with others on me xD.
Does anyone know can AHA+BHA toner and retinol cream TOGETHER damage the barrier my forehead is peeling (for the 1st time ever my skin is mega oily + I have redness)
@@croatiankpopfan7709 pretty sure you aren't supposed to use salicylic acid with retinol, fact check that though
i use la roche posay effaclar serum and noticed my skin clearing up, but I developed dry itchy patches and some little red itchy dots. i can honestly say ive learned more about my skin and what products work for me in the last 2 years by watching your videos ( and james welsh) than i ever learned from ANY dermatologist. I wish i found you sooner cause here i am 32 years old and finally understanding my skin, knowing what products work, which to avoid and finally feeling like my skin is no longer a burden or something i need to hide! thank you so much for doing what you do and giving us not so perfect skin peeps REAL information that we can use!
had the same experience! used to go to a derm since i was 8 (got acne very early) and they all kept prescribing me products that burned my skin (as in, it hurt a looot) and made it extra sensitive and super oily. literally astringents/exfoliators/acids. they NEVER told me to use sunscreen or moisturizer. i’m so glad i stopped going when my parents realized this was going nowhere, and found out about proper skincare routines on the internet. now my skin has drastically improved, it’s basically clear except for the old scars and a few whiteheads that come out when i eat too much sugar. cleanser/moisturizer/sunscreen is a godsend! now i also added a retinoid product for the night routine and rose water for the day routine (makes my skin less oily somehow and i spray it on after makeup) and it’s great, skin is not as oily as before.
i feel like some derms just have a partnership with brands because they just kept prescribing the same products no matter what i told them and no matter how my skin reacted to it
so glad for you that you found something that works for you, it’s never too late!!

I could've told you that! After I used ordinary's Vit C suspension serum I noticed my smile lines got WAY more larger and defined
Used appropriately, after a dermatologist consultation, these products are fine. Retinol is meant to be phased into, lowest concentration 2x a week, increase as tolerated. If you have any kind of skin concerns, best to visit an actual doctor, not google or Sephora.
1:00 what exactly do you mean by "permanently damaging your skin barrier"? Permanent damage? Is that even possible?
I was so excited when I started using pixie glow tonic, and then tarte knockout (biologique recherche dupe), Ann’s then biologique rexherche p50 1970 a few years ago. Damaged my skin barrier and made it look so much worse than it did to begin with. I won’t use acids again, just not worth it to me

retinoids are so popular on social media, and even though regarded as the holy grail, i know so many people myself included where it just did more damage than good despite being very careful.
The neutrogena acne oil free wash made my skin very sensitive, dry and extremely oily.

So if anyone has recommendations for vit c that aren’t too weak and not too strong I would love to hear them 😊
Now my skin is the best ever 😊 thanks so much ☺️☺️
My skin barrier is damaged currently and I’ve cut out all actives until it’s recovered. If I have a spot, I just put on an acne patch.

Thank you for alerting us to this information!!! I feel like trusting my skin and how it’s feeling/reacting is much more important than pushing through the irritation. Wow. 🤯
Wondering if there are any layering best practices while using the barrier protective and anti-oxidants while using retinoids/acids at the same time.
This video really helped me understand my skin and the things I put on it so much!
hey cassandra, i wanted to ask u if u watched dr idriss's video on hyaluronic acid ? and what do u think of it
Thank you. You listed these 3 types of helpful substances. Should they be all on 1 product or is it only possible to get separately each? And are there any particular product for Day use? If overnight I use adapalene.
I couldn't get any results from retinol besides damage until I started suffocating it with the Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand creme at night!
What do you mean by suffocating? Did you put retinol before the moisturizer or after?
@@midi6615 always after
You’re skin is glowing! You look fab☺️
Wven with skin cycling my barrier waa damaged. But i got it nailed down by making sure to pair the exfoliating , retinoid days with hydrators/moisturisers (serum, toner) as well, like shwet masks
Otherwise my skin would burn using these actives..
I’m a huge fan of Krave Beauty great barrier relief, but I’m curious enough to try the Purito dermis’s sleeping pack.
I really want to try the peach &lily glass skin serum. Has anyone tried it?
But dr dray literally saved my skin I love her sooooo much
@@m.7340 She literally acknowledges a diversity of skin types & even people of color. You realize she actually works with a diversity of people with all kinds of skin concerns? She’s not just on TH-cam putting on an act like your favs. She’s genuine and a professional.
@@onedudethelegend yeah I’m glad she warned me about some mineral sunscreens cuz I’m a person of color and that cast would not be pleasant on me
I shudder to think of the things i used to put on my face......i had very oily skin during puberty so i just didn’t put cream on my face 🤦🏻♀️ on my pimples i used toothpaste, aftershave, acetone!!!
Hi Cassandra! Thank you for making these videos. I'm learning so much. Could you please share where you got your 3d skincare diagram?
When I first saw the title, I was like oh no! Haha but this makes a lot of sense now! I've learned so much from this channel! 💙
Does anyone have advice to get rid of after acne dark spots treatment?
Ooo, super nice timing! Was just about to buy my first SA product this week 😊
I love your videos! They are informative and educational. Watching from The Philippines.
Thank you thank you thank you. My skin has been freaking the hell out thanks to my IUD and everything I have been doing to try and fight the horribly painful cystic acne I now have as an adult, has been drying out my already dry and sensitive skin. This has been such a struggle for me
Your videos are always so helpful. They’ve helped me learn more about my skin and honestly a lot of what you recommend has been helping. ☺️
You are so sweet, thank you so much for all you do!
I hope you have a wonderful day! Stay safe!!
question. during the daytime some days i don’t even leave my house. should i still be applying SPF? i know they say windows the uv rays can still get thru but i have the blinds down usually or i have the little slits open but my house doesn’t get much sun on it the way it’s designed and placed.
Always wear sunscreen, but indoors especially with blinds you can reapply way less than when you have your windows wide open all day or moreso when you go outdoors.
I really want you to talk about psoriasis. I have for about 9 months an i would love you view on the topic.
Hello Cassandra, could you please help me or maybe make a new videos about actual procedure that can make a different in 1-discolouration (very dark knees and armpit) 2- keratosis pillars (I've it from my chest until my thighs.
I've tried all home remedies, visited dermatologists and applied the suggested topical creams since I was 12. Yet, I'm 27 and still can't wear my favourite dress (can't show my back, stomach or even legs) .
I'm so willing to go under any treatments that can provide me with a real solution :( .
I just luv ur skin care tips..others techniques tnq luv u 🙂
Can you speak about sodium benzoate and Ascorbic acid? I’ve been reading about how it can turn into benzene which is a carcinogen. Why then do most facial products contain one or the other with no warnings of don’t mix the two on your face?
Hey Cassandra,, seriously u r a saviour,, u r my cyst-er😉,, I have learned so much about skin and skincare from ur channel,,and I am so thankful to you for that coz I have started understanding my skin better,, I have a question though, I use sunscreen only when I have to go outside, do I also have to use it when I am indoors??
Such an INFORMATIVE and ENTHUSIASTIC piece! Thanks Cassie for having our backs! # Road to Healthy Skin#sendung love from sunny South Africa♥️♥️♥️🌼🌼🌼🌺🌺🌺🌿🌿🦄🦄
