Thanks for the explanation and video. Many of us want to learn this stuff but never take the initiative so we NEVER PROGRESS in our skillset. You are a great teacher and we hope you will do some more of these videos....such as adjusting the gear cables, changing out the gears, etc.

You can use a hammer with a screwdriver on the back of the crank to knock it off rather than the extractor. However this could damage the crank and the bearings, so wouldn't suggest this unless you're throwing the crank and replacing the bb. Hence why a crank extractor is a way better idea. They're not expensive either. £5 online

adjustable wrenches are great in a pinch ,,but should be used as primary spanner .
