    It's better to run free and die free, than to be chained to a tree in someone's back yard, like so many poor dogs are. It's natural to blame yourselves for whatever happened to Scout, but think about how much good you guys, (and the other dogs and Southgate) brought into his life. I know from personal experience, that it's difficult to stop beating yourself up, but you need to let it go, or it will dominate your life.
    Life is a long series of decisions to make. You made your decisions based on what you knew at the time. Hindsight can ruin your happiness, with the shoulda, coulda, wouldas. In the end, Nature rules.
    And that "stupid little shed" is ADORABLE! We all love you guys, your pets, and what you share with us. Keep doing you.

      Your dogs don't have to be chained to a tree to be safe or under control. I lived in Alaska for 20 years with my dogs and simple training kept them in eye sight and a whistle would bring them to my side if any danger existed. We had bear encounters all the time and my dogs lived to enjoy life to the fullest. Maybe you should see what it is like to have a 3 legged dog attacked and torn apart by a Cougar, most likely not very pleasant for the dog. Truth is we are responsible for the safety and well being of our animals, especially when danger of wild animals lurks.

I guarantee you that they feel bad enough without you piling on them. Your experience is your own, theirs is theirs. It's not your right, place, or business to admonish _anyone_ here.
      It's not certain that Scout died by being mauled, anything could've happened to him. Either way, he died a natural death, and that's a darned sight better than dying at the end of a syringe, trembling in anticipation and not knowing why your lights are going out.

    Don't take this in the Wrong way Michy.......But....You and Steve have a little Hound in you. I'm thinking heart is where it is. Your love and passion for the outdoors, Dogs, and your little cabin project and Steve who, from what I make some assumptions, adventure and much more are the best fit for giving them old hounds their best go at life. Although you are not doing it in the traditional way or the most Accepted way by the "THEMS" of the world, You are looking beyond that and giving it a go......So keep it up and carry on my friend. 💝. Thank you so much. It’s very true, isn’t it. I have been thinking about it lately, more and more, just how much Clyde and I are alike - we both love running around sniffing and making noise in the forest with a smile on our face. And I’ve always felt that Clyde (and perhaps hounds in general) are such a different breed - they just beat to their own drum. And that is exactly who Steve is too. So you are 100% right.

But Scout was a hunting dog and that's what hunting dogs do. I recently saw a post of someone holding their dog in their lap and the dog looking up with such intent and love in his eyes and the caption was tell me that story how you rescued me one more time...... You and Steve are doing a wonderful job with the dogs. They are in a loving home, not sitting in a cage in some shelter just hoping someone will take them home.
    Look at it this way: Imagine there was a big fence around the saw mill and all those logs. You could look at the saw mill but not use it because you might get hurt or die.
    Then one day someone comes along and removes the fence. They know you might get hurt or die using the saw mill and they do everything they can to make it safe. The joy in your face and the metaphorical "waging your tail" excitement of cutting logs far outweighs the danger.

    • @michygoss7148
      @michygoss7148  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow. Yes, this is true. I think the only difference is that dogs (domestic) aren’t fully aware of the dangers like we are. Not in the same way, anyway. I think, especially for Clyde, if he could just come home before dark each time I’d be thrilled. Its the fact that 98% of the time he has no idea or thought to come back to the house, and travels to the most barren, distant and dangerous areas possible. 🥴

    • @BlueSky-uz1tv
      @BlueSky-uz1tv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michygoss7148 I may be wrong but I suspect Clyde was never trained. His previous owner(s) probably just walked through the woods letting Clyde lead the way until it was time to go home. A leash or something went on Clyde and home they went.
      Right now Clyde is in charge. He's calling the shots. You need to change that dynamic. I would suggest seeing a professional dog trainer. We raised 4 Border Collies (not as herding dogs) and we accomplished more in a few session with a trainer than we would have done in months on our own. We also learned you cannot train multiple dogs all at the same time. It has to be one-on-one. A very important thing is recall. All the dogs must come to you when you call them - immediately. We found a good place to train was at a local high school sports stadium. A (US) football field of grass, fenced all around, and very few distractions.
      I know it's frustrating, we all can see it on your face when you have to "go get Clyde" but that can be fixed. There is no such thing as a dog "too old" to train.

    • @michygoss7148
      @michygoss7148  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BlueSky-uz1tv so Clyde was a hunting dog his whole life. He had only been trained to hunt, which meant he was let loose to follow a scent and do his job for the hunter. He was otherwise outside living in a pen and had no ‘family’ life.
      Clyde was living in an outdoor pen and then moved to a warehouse with a rescue organization and unadopted for a year. No one wanted him - he was 9 years old, never lived in a home, not potty trained, walked terribly for the volunteers, and knew next to nothing. He was given the name Clyde when he got to the rescue, so he barely knew it.
      I know it might seem that I’ve not done any training with Clyde, but trust me, I have. He has come a long way since we first got him. He was petrified to even be inside, and one and a half years later, is still afraid to come into the kitchen. It took him nearly 2 months to go up the stairs inside the house, and I tried with him every single day. He wore a diaper for nearly a month, and was so anxious that he obsessively drank water, which required me to take him out to potty sometimes 3 times an hour, putting the diaper on and off all day long in the middle of winter cuz he’d randomly just lift his leg and pee anywhere.
      As for come recall, I have worked with several other dogs and their recall is good. Clyde is just different. If he is sniffing, he will not hear you unless you literally tap him on the back. I have used e-collars successfully in the past for recall with the other dogs, but Clyde has so many neck rolls and it’s a bit tricky and a bit dangerous, so I’ve stayed away from it, although I think it would be the only communication tool to work properly on him. I guess what I’m saying is that it’s not an age thing with Clyde, is a hound dog thing. I trained Riley and tank (tank now passed away) as senior dogs without a problem.
      Could I do more work with Clyde? Absolutely. 💝

    OMG Michelle, I am in tears over your talk about Scout. I FEEL your pain. In less than a week, I will take my sweet boy Bandit (a rescue some 14 years ago) to help him with his crossing. His age and continued and mounting ailments have brought about this decision. I know our situations are far from similar but regardless of "how" it happened, the loss is still felt and grieved over. After he found you both, Scout and the rest of your pack have and are living a beautiful life. Please continue to do the work you do with foster and rescue. People like you and Steve are many but still NOT enough for the amount of dogs that need our help, especially the seniors. I will adopt again one day and have already decided that it will be with an older dog that needs to know that his life is still worth the fine things.....letting him know & feel the grass beneath his feet as it is a place for him to have adventures and to play, he will know the touch of a loving hand, the sound of a kind voice, the medicinal care he might need and all the food and water necessary to keep him be happy and healthy. God Bless you both!

      @michygoss7148  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Lori! I am feeling your pain too - good luck with bandit, you are making the right decision before things get too bad for him.
      Everything you say is true, thank you. We will adopt again, and actually already have adopted 3 dogs from overseas just before Covid hit. Two of them are disabled, one is significantly disabled and we will likely work on bringing her here to Canada when the time is right. She will need expensive and extensive surgeries to try and fix her - she was hit by a car and neither of her arms work. She moves around like a wheelbarrow, and it’s so hard to see. But she’s an absolute doll - reminds me of Hannah.
      That’s the tentative plan anyway. She deserves a chance to walk properly again, even just a little, and they can’t do that where she’s at now.
      Best wishes to you and your family 💕

    I feel your heartbreak, but equally I can see the great life those dogs have.. scout was physically challenged anyway so it would have made him easy pray I guess. Bit his tenacity never let that stop him from living life to the fullest! And you let him live his fullest happiest life! You COULDNT have done MORE for him in the circumstances and while you could analyse every move what if this or that, he had a happy life because of you two! Just REMEMBER THAT!
    GREAT work on the Mini Cabin! It's really coming along Fantastic! I love when you say "I don't know what I'm doing" and then pull off an artistic masterpiece in raw woodwork on the side of a mountain! It looks brilliant! Anyone would be proud to build that in their back garden let alone on a mountain with very extreme limited access..
    As for not doing as much as you want. Just remember the old saying.. "Life is a Journey not a Destination!" So "Enjoy the Ride!" That's what matters..

    Strange how a wild chipmunk would know enough to trust you in one day, even while running power tools, slapping hammers etc. Those are all very scary noises to such creatures who are usually so timid, and even being as busy as you were and driven to finish the shed, you spent time holding your hand out & still, until he came to you,now I don't know how long it took, but I'm assuming that it was all in the same day, no?
    So, is Scout really gone, or was that just him in another skin?
    I've been feeding the same squirrel for about 3 years now, and the closest I can get him is about 3 feet away 🤔 he runs around me a whole lot ,and he even comes down out of his oak tree when he sees me come out of my building at work...pretty amazing indeed!

      And yes - that was in a few minutes that I got it to feed off my hand. Chipmunks are more tame than squirrels from what I’m told. But all of a sudden it showed up (and there’s actually two of them I found out later). Both coming to eat from my hand, but one more aggressive than the other. Super cute though. ☺️

You are a beautiful woman who likes to get things done. You and Steve are such a good match. An inspiration to me! Much love from me to you from the Netherlands. A fan! ❤

    Hey Lady,
    Don’t lose hope and faith. That good O’boy is out there somewhere. I’ve seen with my own eyes dogs return or are found after a year. Your doing a great job with your pups and bless your heart for taking on a task that so many others wouldn’t think twice about. We need more people that are selfless in this world. Keep your head up and know that that pup knows you love him. Without sounding strange. Y’alls home is their doggy heaven. Stay healthy and safe inside your body 😉🤙🏼
    We luv and pray for you

    This is something that I do to fill in gaps like where you’re building your wall up to the roof rafters. I get a big bottle of wood glue and mix it with wood shavings or wood sawdust and fill the gap and when it dries it looks just like wood !! Also don’t beat yourself up over scout the dog because you gave him the best, The very best life he possibly could have had considering the conditions. God bless you and stay safe and keep doing what you’re doing and don’t change nothing because you feel bad about losing a dog 🐕!! 🙏🐕❤️😊

    Michelle As one door closes another opens. Scout was a wonderful dog and his time with you was full of joy, he couldn't have wished for a better dog owner. You gave him love, a life full of adventure, you fed and watered him and cared for his needs. I have had many dogs in my lifetime, each had it's own unique character, I miss them all. That little chip monk knows where to get a free meal, before long you'll have a bunch of them round your feet. Life must go on, even if we have a heavy heart.

    Michelle, If some parents took as good of care of their children as you do of your rescue managerie, this world would be a much happier place. Don't ever doubt the quality (and quantity) of life that you and Steve have selflessly given to them. It's very obvious that you two love your animals beyond measure. Just think of what kind of life they might have had without you.
    You are simply wonderfully giving people.

Without you, Scout would have probably simply existed in a shelter until he died. With you and Steve, he lived! On a happy note, your Chipmunk voiceover was a-fricken-dorable!! The little scamp of the forest already moving. into your shed.

      Thank you Nancy! I can’t tell you how many times your comments, in particular the one experience you shared of being in front of the pack, comes to my mind. And I have this visual of what that looks like, and it is so true. I just picked Clyde up again last night after he took off and spent the whole day out and about, and I have had some opportunities to get close to Clyde and he has no idea I’m there. So I get to see him in his glory, and the content on his face is so apparent. I had to tie Clyde up a couple of times at the lake (for my sanity), and boy oh boy, was there ever a different look on his face. Crazy contrast. We know we have to let him do his thing, we just pretty much plan our day around it! 🤪🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @sfwoodwork2992

    The shed is awesome, as is the life you give your dogs. When I used to take my first husky, Smilla, up to run on the mountain it was always in the back of my mind that I might never see her again, but she needed to run and dig for chipmunks and chase moose down the ski trails. People told me you can never let a husky off a leash but that sounded crazy to me. Just watching her out in the woods being her best self was worth the stress of worrying about her. Of course, she always knew where I was and would come back to me after her little extracurricular jaunts (I did wind up getting an old style GPS collar that "talked" to the handheld unit via radio as I didn't have a smart phone yet). You do need to let them be as free as possible, taking the precautions that you can (which you do). Looking forward to the next video. I love it when you say you don't know what you're doing... clearly you have great instincts.

    You both need not feel guilty or bad about Scout, he was living the life he enjoyed and roaming free and happy. A for instance is knowing someone who enjoys motorcycle racing looses it on the track, we say they died doing what they enjoyed, like Scout was enjoying his life out there surrounded by loved ones…. we still have to carry on after tragedy occurs, I know this myself, whilst loved ones are in our hearts they still there and always will be x

I thought I saw a totally inappropriate reply by an insensitive someone, but when I went back to reply it was gone, and thankful it was since you all are to kind hearted to have to deal with evil. You build things because you want to and have the ability. For you, as you say, not knowing what you are doing, the shed looks good. If you had really wanted the boards at the top inside to fit the round logs, you would have, and I think you could have. Please do not be so hard on yourself. If it takes a year to complete the cabin, folks are not going to hate you. They choose to watch your videos. The part at the end where the dogs and cat got some steak blended so well with Scout that I thought for a moment you had found him. I will not give up hope that he finds his way home. Have good days.

      If I had a jigsaw there I could have made the round cuts to fit, but with limited tools out there, I could only make a straight cut. But, I’ve done a little something since to make it look a little nicer.
