That was a really great video. When I started to watch it I wondered how far the examples would go and they were really great. I had a few questions and this really answered them. I now have something to practice. That black is so nice as well. Top example!
Thank you! I wasn't too sure how best to pitch it. I didnt want the tone to be too basic for people but I still wanted to reinforce the basics. In the end I just went with things I know help me and figured they'd be useful for others. Black with a high contrast highlight seemed the perfect example to really show the process.
Great guide. I've struggled with edge highlighting for a long time, but I just put your tips into practice, and I've improved greatly. Looking forward to getting better.

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Well sir you give me hope to practice and become better! Just getting into the hobby after lurking for so long. Love your videos mate!
A couple more things I'd recommend: A nice, even (but light) pressure to ensure the line stays smooth and of uniform thickness. It's best not to pick at an edge bit by bit. Holding the model in such a way that strokes are toward yourself when possible will help to make a nice, even line. Most importantly, the consistency of the paint matters. I recommend thinning it with a bit of flow improver or drying retarder, to ensure it stays moist on the brush. If the paint is drying on your brush, you have to try harder to get it onto the surface, and it can affect the line you're making.
How would you do the small clean up with the base coat if your base color is a contrast paint? Any touch ups I do with contrast paint usually is noticeable
I know technique matters most, but I struggle with brushes keeping their sharp tips even with cleaning soap and all. What would be the least expensive brush you'd suggest for this specific task?
So, I recently made a video on paintbrush basics. It includes some pointers on types of brush, brush loading cleaning etc. th-cam.com/video/chBHaXh8iko/w-d-xo.html which I would certainly recommend you give a watch, if you haven’t already. In terms of what brush would I recommend to keep a sharp point? For sure it would be one with kolinsky sable bristles. As they are the best suited bristle for the job and being a natural hair, it means the conditioners in paint soap help to nourish and keep them clean and soft. Personally I’m a fan of Artis Opus series S brushes and for edge highlights I use a 00 bit.ly/42NKGLH Hope that helps 👍
Great video. My biggest issue is paint drying on my brush so fast. I get 2-3 strokes max. Any tips? I have a retarder I could use but worry it will thin the paint a ton
I know it can feel that way but it gets easier. I mean it. I used to absolutely suck at it. But using the tips in the video and sticking with it. I found I got better with each mini. Some edges are easier. Like really sharp straight edges. So I focused on them first. To get my paint consistency right and my softness of touch dialled in. Then I moved on to other trickier ones and sure they don’t always go right first time. But that’s ok. You can correct and refine things as you go. That’s all just part of painting. One thing that is for sure. You won’t get better ever, if you never do it. Stick with it. You’ll get there 👍
Thanks, glad you like it. So for the bronze and grey scheme you’ll want to check out this recipe (one of my faves) instagram.com/p/B2l4O_aHgEd/?igshid=d8mv8x2pt5kq Done before I started youtube I’m afraid
Thanks for giving it a watch man. Not a dumb question at all. So, the answer is yes but with a little explanation. In this example I did a high contrasting highlight to make it obvious what I was painting. If I was painting something which was more subtly layered and shaded, I would still apply a final edge highlight in just the same way but I would use a colour with was much more subtle and natural
You might be surprised to discover the visual effect that can come from an edge highlight on an already layered surface. It tricks your eye into perceiving the color of the entire surface a bit differently, that is to say it enhances the highlight on the whole area, not just the edge that the paint is actually applied to. A very helpful illusion.
Well, there’s no real rules to how you decide, as you can have quite a lot of creative freedom with it. For example, blue highlights on black looks great. Generally though, you would just go with a lighter tone to the colour you’re highlighting You can get this by adding white, or cream or yellow etc depending on the colour you’re wanting to lighten. I’m now thinking there’s a whole video on this topic. Red is an odd one, as you generally need to either go the orange / yellow route or the pinks Up to you really
I genuinely thought people would be sick of seeing Ultra marine guides. I will do one though, as you’re not the first to ask, so there must be an audience out there 👍🏻
Oh I see, sorry The recipe is the same as the Raven Guard video th-cam.com/video/dUyZQGe_tho/w-d-xo.html And the specific paint being used for these highlights was Graphite from Scale75. So, it’s just a standard acrylic paint basically. Hope that helps
You already have a thicker highlight on the model, is that one also applied with this edge highlighting or do you paint that on normally to be thicker?
The thicker highlight was done in just the same way, using the edge highlighting techniques shown in the video. The only difference is to get a slightly thicker line I changed the brush angle I used and applied slightly more pressure so more of the brush was in contact with the edge. Hope that helps. Thanks for checking out my channel 👍🏻
I personally don’t see the point in edge highlights I prefer two tone xenethol prime drybrushing and reductive technique with some ak interactives streaking grime and some white spirits. But I appreciate this and how damn clean those lines were.
That’s the beauty of this hobby, there’s countless styles, interpretations and preferences. It’s all about finding what you like and what works for you. Thanks for checking out the video though much appreciated Hopefully some of my future videos will be more to your style and taste 👍🏻
I think it’s because it’s so matte and my camera equipment back then wasn’t the best. I’ve upgraded a bit since then. Thanks for watching though, really glad it was useful 👍
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides me too scale color plus fantasy and games is my favorite range and the metallics are top tier too! I had a guy say scale is horrible for glazing I Was like “what??????”
@@TriptonStudios scale is awesome for glazing. He clearly didn’t know what he was talking about. I’ve had lots of people ask me if scale paints are just for pros. Which I obviously said, definitely not. They’re not different to any other acrylic paints. So, there’s clearly a lot of misunderstanding and confusion around them which seems to put a lot of people off. Which is a shame, because I think everyone should have a least a couple of colours in their paint collection
Dam your work is excellent.just found your channel and subscribed. Could you do a night lords and thousand sons tutorial at some point ? Thanks for sharing your talent.

Tell all your friends 😉
Give this a watch, it will explain brush loading th-cam.com/video/chBHaXh8iko/w-d-xo.html And then in terms of paint thinness, yes it should be slightly diluted. But only so that it flows from the damp brush cleanly. If you’ve not already done, then I’d recommend watching my paint thinning video too Let me know if you still have questions 👍
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thank you. I somehow missed the guide on painting basics, it is also very useful. Now, in conjunction with this video, everything became clearer to me. Paint thinning video is of the greatest value to my mind since it gives the understanding that is not clear on the first sight - "water evaporates from the paint, and paint lays smoothly".
@@Uruluke nice one. I’ve tried to make these videos work in conjunction with each other so as to not repeat things over and over in each video. Really good to hear they’re helping you though, I’ve another video in that series coming soon, on washes. So keep an eye out for that too
I am curious of what varnish you use for the models? If using a matt black, and then add a matt varnish, is that to much matt? :-) I am sstruggeling to find the right varnish for my black templars. :-)
Paint finish is quite a personal thing I find. I like a very matte finish and tend to use Testors Dullcote or AK ultra matte varnish for mine but some would find it too matte. If you're already using a matte black though then adding a matte varnish wont make it too matte. If anything it will just correct any areas where you may have over painted some washes etc. I say, go for the matte all the way :)
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thanks allot for the reply! I am currently using AK ultra matt aswell, mixed with a contrast medium to not be to matt. I like it :-) Will try your black recipe today, picking up the SC00 black. Thanks again!
Can you recommend any brushes for highlighting? I'm not a bad painter, but I struggle with fine edge highlights and I think part of the issue is the brushes I'm using not being of a good enough quality, but I also don't want to pay a small fortune for a brush that becomes useless for highlighting after a few uses
I'm a fan of Kolinsky sable brushes. Depending where you are in the world there's a few different brands you can choose from. Personally, right now I'm using Artis Opus brushes and they perform really well: elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-hobby-and-scenery-by-manufacturer/artis-opus/single-brushes?d=10493 I tend to have a bit of a hierarchy to my brush use. I reserve my best brushes for edging, cheaper brushes for washes and blocking in and then junk brushes for mixing and basing etc. I have found though, by cleaning my expensive brushes with brush soap after every paint session they really last and stay like new for ages. I have some brushes which are 3 years old and still going strong
Actually, you can do it either way. Generally, I’ll edge after using shades in order to get a brighter, crisper highlight. However, if I’m painting something I want a softer result with less sharp edges, like a horse for example. I’ll apply a wash after to help blend the transitions together
What would you say is the right amount of paint for this? Every time I try to have a small enough amount as to not spread it to the wrong area, it dries out really fast on the brush and then doesn’t give a sharp clean edge. I’m struggling with this for the Revenant Wings.
It’s tricky, there’s no exact answer to that as it will always depend on a lot of factors, the temperature in the room, the paint you’re using, the brush you have etc As a general rule though, I would suggest before going near your paint you want your empty brush to be damp. Not full of water, just damp so that it won’t draw the moisture out of your paint as you load it into you brush. It’ll also help the paint flow from the brush. Then load your brush with your paint, Test it on your palette / hand to check it’s behaving how you want And then paint onto your model. After a while you will begin to develop a feel for that Goldilocks amount. Not too much, not too little. Keep practicing and it’ll come 🙂 Hope that helps?
Thank you so much!! This is super helpful! I think I definitely need a stiffer brush and I think my paints are a little too thin for highlighting! I’ll give this a try ☺️
Don't thin it with water. Try a little flow improver instead, or add a little drying retarder to the water. It's important to keep the paint moist on the brush.
Edge highlighting isn't hard per se but my biggest problem is the same as when I'm blending. These things are supposed to be a bit subtle but when you're doing it feels GLARINGLY obvious and so it feels like it looks like crap. Stop looking at it for a minute or move it far away from your face to get a good feel for if it is crap or not.
It’s true, especially because wet paint is often a very different tone to when it’s dry. Getting into the habit of reviewing the mini from different distances as part of the process is important to do. I’m also a firm believer in not over reacting when you feel a paint job isn’t going well. Instead of stripping it and starting again, I force myself to put it to one side and look at it again the following day. Fresh eyes see things differently 👍🏻

which I would certainly recommend you give a watch, if you haven’t already.
In terms of what brush would I recommend to keep a sharp point?
For sure it would be one with kolinsky sable bristles. As they are the best suited bristle for the job and being a natural hair, it means the conditioners in paint soap help to nourish and keep them clean and soft.
Personally I’m a fan of Artis Opus series S brushes and for edge highlights I use a 00

Hope that helps 👍
Saw the FB post. Great looking work! Subbed and will look forward to more.
Awesome, thank you!
Great tutorial. Super helpful. If you dont mind, what colors for your black did you use/how did you get your black to look a little like grey metal
Thanks

Great video. My biggest issue is paint drying on my brush so fast. I get 2-3 strokes max. Any tips? I have a retarder I could use but worry it will thin the paint a ton
I’ve been struggling with the triangle hand lock thing with the tops of models. Like the top of a termagant. Any tips for that?
Thanks
Very welcome, hope it proves useful
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides oh I think it will thank you soo much
U had me at edge
Really good tutorial. Started the hobby about three months ago. Can I ask what colours you used for this model. Thanks.
I see there in the video description. Thanks.
Love the intro! Really helpful vid!
its official. edge highlighting is the single hardest thing to do in the world. i hate it.
You’ll get there 👍
Hey man, great job! Great video, thanks! And which colors did you use for the bronze and grey backpack? Looks great!
Thanks, glad you like it.
So for the bronze and grey scheme you’ll want to check out this recipe (one of my faves)

Done before I started youtube I’m afraid
Came across this on Reddit. Good tips! Maybe a dumb newb question but would you ever edge highlight a model that you've put layered highlights on?
Was the black base coat sprayed on? It looks very nice
Thank you, no it was all hand brushed.
Check out my Raven Guard paint video for details 👍🏻
th-cam.com/video/dUyZQGe_tho/w-d-xo.html
How do you know which is the best color to edge highlight? For example, what color do you use to edge highlight red?
Well, there’s no real rules to how you decide, as you can have quite a lot of creative freedom with it.
For example, blue highlights on black looks great.
Generally though, you would just go with a lighter tone to the colour you’re highlighting
You can get this by adding white, or cream or yellow etc depending on the colour you’re wanting to lighten.
I’m now thinking there’s a whole video on this topic.
Red is an odd one, as you generally need to either go the orange / yellow route or the pinks
Up to you really
Steady hand like a sniper. Unbelievable.
Thank you 🤛🏻
I you’ll find these tips helpful in your painting
I know this might be redundant, but can you do a full ultra marine tutorial?
I genuinely thought people would be sick of seeing Ultra marine guides.
I will do one though, as you’re not the first to ask, so there must be an audience out there 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides you’re my new favorite channel! Keep up the great work!
What color do I have to highlight edge with? Is there a table?
The model being painted is from this tutorial. So all the colours used are here

Focus better on this one?
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Much better! :D
@@faidon90125 cool 😎
Was this done just using a base paint white? Or was it a different type of paint like contrast or technical?
Sorry, which bit are you talking about?
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Just wondering what type of paint you used for the highlights
Oh I see, sorry
The recipe is the same as the Raven Guard video
th-cam.com/video/dUyZQGe_tho/w-d-xo.html
And the specific paint being used for these highlights was
Graphite from Scale75.
Thanks for checking out the video though much appreciated

Very neat mate 👌🏽
Why does the black look like dark drab green to me lol 😂 great video though! Very pleasant to watch to boot!
I think it’s because it’s so matte and my camera equipment back then wasn’t the best. I’ve upgraded a bit since then.
Thanks for watching though, really glad it was useful 👍
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides that’s what I thought its so matte! Love it thought great black
@@TriptonStudios yeah, it’s one of my top 5 paints.
I love the stuff. Makes everything looks great
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides me too scale color plus fantasy and games is my favorite range and the metallics are top tier too!
Thank you, really glad you like the channel. It’s still pretty new and I’m still learning filming skills, but I have big plans. I am planning on doing a Thousand Sons Exalted Sorcerer, as I think they look amazing.
I’ve actually done a picture guide for a metallic Night Lord scheme if that’s of use though?

Very usefull video. But I cannot understand: should the brush be wet and how much should the paint be diluted?
Give this a watch, it will explain brush loading
th-cam.com/video/chBHaXh8iko/w-d-xo.html
And then in terms of paint thinness, yes it should be slightly diluted. But only so that it flows from the damp brush cleanly.
If you’ve not already done, then I’d recommend watching my paint thinning video too
Let me know if you still have questions 👍
I like it :-)
Will try your black recipe today, picking up the SC00 black. Thanks again!

How do we get smooth white armor? :)
I can help you there
Here’s my recipe for white
th-cam.com/video/APwVOAzwUqg/w-d-xo.html
Can you recommend any brushes for highlighting? I'm not a bad painter, but I struggle with fine edge highlights and I think part of the issue is the brushes I'm using not being of a good enough quality, but I also don't want to pay a small fortune for a brush that becomes useless for highlighting after a few uses
I'm a fan of Kolinsky sable brushes. Depending where you are in the world there's a few different brands you can choose from.
Personally, right now I'm using Artis Opus brushes and they perform really well:
elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-hobby-and-scenery-by-manufacturer/artis-opus/single-brushes?d=10493
I tend to have a bit of a hierarchy to my brush use.
How much time does it approximately take to finish a power armour in such manner?
Takes me around 20-30mins
But I’m not the quickest painter by any means
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides for that standard and quality it seems fast enough, thanks for replying
Do you edge highlight before or after you use shade paint?
Actually, you can do it either way.
Generally, I’ll edge after using shades in order to get a brighter, crisper highlight.
However, if I’m painting something I want a softer result with less sharp edges, like a horse for example. I’ll apply a wash after to help blend the transitions together
What would you say is the right amount of paint for this? Every time I try to have a small enough amount as to not spread it to the wrong area, it dries out really fast on the brush and then doesn’t give a sharp clean edge. I’m struggling with this for the Revenant Wings.
It’s tricky, there’s no exact answer to that as it will always depend on a lot of factors, the temperature in the room, the paint you’re using, the brush you have etc
As a general rule though, I would suggest before going near your paint you want your empty brush to be damp. Not full of water, just damp so that it won’t draw the moisture out of your paint as you load it into you brush. It’ll also help the paint flow from the brush.
Then load your brush with your paint,
Test it on your palette / hand to check it’s behaving how you want
And then paint onto your model.
After a while you will begin to develop a feel for that Goldilocks amount.
Not too much, not too little.
Keep practicing and it’ll come 🙂
Hope that helps?
Thank you so much!! This is super helpful! I think I definitely need a stiffer brush and I think my paints are a little too thin for highlighting! I’ll give this a try ☺️
@@missbunxiv hope it help. Stick with it and remember to test it first before putting brush to model.
let me know how you get on 🙂
Don't thin it with water. Try a little flow improver instead, or add a little drying retarder to the water. It's important to keep the paint moist on the brush.
What is the difference between abbadon blackand corvis black
Corvis black is a little more matte and a bit more grey than abaddon black
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides my life is hard
