Bit of background on the story - In the early days of WWII the Germans managed (by invading the neutral Netherlands and Belgium to break through the Allied lines and cut off 400,000 troops of the British Expeditionary Force (including the bulk of Britain's professional soldiers), the French 1st and 7th Armies and what was left of the Belgian and Dutch Armies.
Surrounded, and with their backs to the sea, it looked like they'd all be captured or killed, which would have left Britain massively vulnerable, to the point that there was some talk of surrender among the political classes.
Then, for no adequately explained reason the German tanks stopped their advance for three days giving the Royal Navy and the Marine Nationale time to begin to evacuate the troops.
However, given the sheer magnitude of the task, and the losses that they were suffering from the Luftwaffe, when the advance began again the British commandeered anything that could get across the 35 miles of sea from lifeboats and ferries to yachts fishing boats and cargo ships, commanded by Navy personnel to begin with, but by anyone by the end, to get back as many of them as possible.
By the time the last defenders surrendered, of the 400,000 who were trapped 239,555 had been rescued from the harbour (mostly by the Navies and large ships) and 98,671 had been rescued from the beaches.

Thank you for the history lesson - I am sure I learned about it in school years ago.

"no adequately explained reason" there actually is. 1st they went to far ahead of their supplies and 2nd, they still couldn't believe how easy it was and were expecting a counter attack or trap of some sort or form. the order to stop wasn't given by Hitler btw.

I meant no disrespect - you were totally right - I don't remember learning about this in school - seems there were a lot of facts we didn't learn about in school - like this & about the black women whom contributed to the space program in the United States.

@@trepacer thank you. Non taken. Sometimes words or text can be interpreted with a different meaning. One of the hazards of communicating by text. Cheers.
