This gentleman is a gem of great price. He lived Dunkirk. He witnessed it. It was an honor to be able to listen to his words. Thank you for your service sir. My 90 year old WWII veteran dad sends his thanks as well.
Ok so you seem like you are lying. Your dad must have fought at the age of 15-16 to be 90 in 2017/18 and what are the odds that you are a 60 year old+ person and you’re name is dtrix. Very disrespectful if you are an imposter because I have had people in my family die in ww1 and ww2 service
True hero. I haven't seen the film yet but when I hear or see the word Dunkirk, I always think of my grandfather who survived this and the rest of the war. It's especially poignant because I have the telegram he sent my grandmother after being rescued, it simply says " hello Edith, arrived home safely, Bill"
A movie can be historically inaccurate but emotionally accurate. What he talks about is the realism in the sense of how it felt. When people talk about the historical inaccuracies, they're talking specific factual details that the movie got wrong. It's about how you look at it- emotionally or analytically.
I think looking at a movie like Dunkirk analytically is very stupid. There are always going to be inaccuracies. I feel that the emotional accuracy is more important.
Tsukiyo well.. this veteran only see the reality with his perspective. but the historians out there see this event in all perspectives. soo it is true. this film innaccurate imagine if there is a dog and there is an owner. a dog perspective is different from the owner perspective. and a man who see this owner and his dog also have different perspective.. this man know better about the event because he see the event from third person perspective. but not the emotions. he can't feel the emotions 100%.
Both of my grandfathers (one Navy, the other Army) served in WWII and I was lucky both came back alive. They very rarely talked about the war, but the one thing they both said that still echoes in my head to this very day is "I lost a lot of good friends". It was the way they said it, just like the great veteran in this clip. The hurt was still fresh to them even half a decade after the fact. It made me think that there really are no winners in war.
Future Stein the man literally fought for the freedom for people to express opinions, like or dislikes. You saying this as an ultimatum is against everything he had fought for. Idiot.
His generation played a role in Korea, Vietnam, Cold War, Middle East, etc. I'm not blaming him personally at all. This guy moved me. But our world today was shaped by his generation and generations after.
zunkwind no they don't. But they do grow up and might be in the position to be able to send troops to war. Regardless, all young people can learn from the experiences of war veterans like Ken Sturdy so as to not have the mindset that war solves all problems. Even if you're not affected, someone else will - physically, mentally, or emotionally (or all three).
Hi Buddy, yes he is from Torquay, a resident, Ken Sturdy, from the Normandy Veterans' have a read here's the link where he is from news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/7660915.stm as your from that area you will know more I'm sure its south devon ?? correct me if I'm wrong ??

mircea1910 See it in IMAX, I did yesterday and am still stunned by how real and scary it felt. It's so loud, you're on the edge of your seat the whole movie but not necessarily in a good way. This movie is war from front to back, no pauses. Incredible but exhausting film.
There are some people who doesn't respect Veterans without this brave men our world will be put in to a never ending disaster we all salute you Veterans of War thank you for your service and to the civilians who fight on those days or help the soldiers we salute you.

It's amazing to see how clear headed he still is. Yes he's frail and it's hard to talk fluently because of his age, but still in the way he speaks and his eyes you can tell he's right there, still very clear headed. And although he has to carry the pain of his memories, he also caries wisdom. It must be so disheartening to see young people being sent in to war time and time again, even when there were other choices. And it must be insanely disheartening to see fkn Hitler apologists still walking around.
This is why you commit to realism in historical movies. Because real people went through it. We need to honor their sacrifice and bravery, not trivialize it by making it a stupid spectacle.
My Opa was my age during this battle. He was a german fighter pilot shot down and captured by the british. but he was badass and he befriended his captors and went to visit them after the war. He took the negative effects of the war and made something positive from them.
He's saying that it's sad that people say the film is portraying the war the wrong way since a veteran who lived through it said that the film portrayed the film the right way.
As a vet, I can say my experiences have changed me and how I live my life. I have survived my time "over there" only to have to face cancer. I have been in remission for 3 years now and try to greet every morning with a smile, even the bad ones. Each day is a gift and family and friends should be treasured, live each day with the thought "what can I do to make at least one person smile today".
A real hero my granda was at Dunkirk and I never asked him about it as he didn't talk about the war so it's so important to hear a world war two veteran talking about it most of these poor guys were trained for six weeks then flung right into battle all gave some some gave all lest we forget
I was only expecting him to talk about the film and the real battle...... But I was blown away by the additional wisdom and observations he was making about violence and war in general. Even at 98, he’s still coherent and adamant with his message to us young people.
Saw the movie today and was mesmerized. It's not entertainment. It is pure education in history and in humility. What a moving review by the veteran - respect to him and his fallen comrades.
Sir it is with utmost respect to you and thank you for defending Justice and freedom from oppression I cried with tears of sadness and of admiration salute!!!
I'm in tears. I love to look at history especially warfare and I often don't think about the lives of the men who served, it's just numbers to me, but this man restored a little bit of warmth to my cold heart.
Dunkirk was quite an inspirational and well-done film. It's quite amazing this gentleman who was directly involved in the events depicted was able to live long enough to see this.
My grandfather served at dunkirk, he was on a boat that was strafed by an enemy fighter and was left with several recesses in his left leg for the rest of his life. He passed 10 years ago and never spoke about war. This video kills me because i know these men will soon be lost forever, and the world will move on. My son will know how great these men were.
Sir. i bow nd salute to u. i cried as i saw this video. i also cried happy to say thank u to you Sir. bcos i am adult now...i got a family. bcos of you i got a family. u fought so we all can have freedom today.
He reminds me of my grandpa, he likes to tell me things about how life felt like during the WWII. although he wasn't a soldier that time, those stories often make me cry bc i just cant picture myself in that hard & cruel situation. All respect for you, Sir. God Bless.
Such a powerful interview. My grandfather was at Dunkirk & I will never forget him telling me about swimming out to one of the vessels with his pal who had been wounded on his back. Little did he know, that by the time he reached the vessel, his pal had been shot & killed; which had no doubt, saved my grandfathers.
Love love love out to this elderly man who clearly is still in pain to this day. I hope one day his wounds will feel less pain and that he knows people respect and admire his comments and what he's done for his country
Makes you want to cry. Proud of Christopher Nolan for making that film. To know Ken went through that horrible experience is really depressing. That speech he gave will be remembered for a long time
Last year my grandfather’s regiment marched for the last time and there was one left and he was pretty gutted all of his mates who he fought with aren’t here anymore it’s bloody sad though I’ve never forgotten it
The most important thing to learn about war here was just spoken by this amazing Veteran of War....Will we learn anything?? Will we listen?? The movie was a masterpiece....Moving, emotional, powerful, suspenseful. And REAL!! And so SAD!!
At 98, this man is a legend yet so humble and very wise. Men like him at that time sacrificed themselves so that we can live free today and yet many youngsters nowadays do not even know what Dunkirk was. All they know nowadays is Nicky Minaj or Bieber, sad!!! . At 98, this man is still warning us of how war is STUPID and yet we do not listen in this present generation. I take this opportunity to thank many of the men and women who sacrificed for us. What a masterpiece from Christopher Nolan.
"All my mates are gone now, if you keep living all your mates are gone" That had me near in tears. This seems like such a genuinely lovable and kind old man, I'd love to just sit with him having a cup of coffee and listening to his life story and all the important things he'd be able to share with us. So sad that he's part of the last of his generation of heroes who fought in the second world war. Their heroic sacrifice and bravery should never be forgotten, whether they hailed from the US, England, the Continent, or the Soviet Union. All of the world's nations of that generation more or less sacrificed to make today possible.
What an awesome man. Like, usually, a lot of people like subtlety when viewing these kinds of movies, but here he is in full uniform. It really helps the movies message about survival, and all the things that are associated with the films ending. When he talks about how this movie reminded him of his friends... That is just some real power right there. This man is one of the most amazing people I can think of.
The most important interview this film will ever receive ! What an honor for the film makers .
Seadog. U mean Christopher Nolan
Master Le no, meant the filmmakers.
Master Le Nolan is not alone, it takes a lot of people to pull this off.
I hope that he gets at least a phone call from Nolan
Master Le : exactly !
Five star reviews from the newspapers is great of course, but this is the best praise Christopher Nolan could've hoped for
Owen Jones Agree 100%
Nolan said the early screenings were for veterans who were there and he was pretty scared to show them. Totally understandable.
Makes me want to cry hearing him say I've lost my mates now
Wow this is insane that he was able to see this movie.

My heart shattered for him. This man deserves all the respect in the world.
Wise words from a veteran. We don't have many left. We should heed their words.

"All my mates are gone now, if you keep living all your mates are gone"
That had me near in tears.
Why isn't this video on trending???
What an awesome man. Like, usually, a lot of people like subtlety when viewing these kinds of movies, but here he is in full uniform. It really helps the movies message about survival, and all the things that are associated with the films ending. When he talks about how this movie reminded him of his friends... That is just some real power right there. This man is one of the most amazing people I can think of.
