  • We’ve mapped other planets to more detail than we have our own oceans. How close are we to a complete ocean map?

    “Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project between the Nippon Foundation and GEBCO. It aims to bring together all available bathymetric data to produce the definitive map of the world ocean floor by 2030 and make it available to all. It builds on more than 100 years of GEBCO's history in global seafloor mapping”

    “It could also be potentially lifesaving: Even today, the lack of a detailed map can be deadly, as was the case when the USS San Francisco crashed into an uncharted mountain in 2005. “People have been excited about going to different planets,” says Martin Jakobsson, professor of marine geology and geophysics at Stockholm University, but “we haven’t been able to bring the attention to our own Earth in the same way as Mars. It hasn’t been easy to rally the whole world behind us.” Yet at the same time, some ecologists fear that such a map will also aid mining industries who seek profit in the previously unattainable depths of the Earth.”
    The Ocean: Haven’t We Already Mapped It?
    schmidtocean.org/cruise-log-p...
    “Most of the seafloor that has been mapped thoroughly is close to shore. Thanks to all of the hydrographers that constantly survey the world’s coastlines, we now have nautical charts (specialized maps) that are used to safely navigate ships. Coastal areas are well surveyed and often re-surveyed because seafloor conditions continuously change, especially close to shore. Hydrographers make sure that ships have the information they need to navigate safely by detecting and reporting new hazards to navigation with each chart update.”

    The problem with acoustics is the effect they have on cetaceans, especially the deep diving species such as the Curvier's beaked whale. They are mainly found in deep canyons where the sound bounces off the walls causing them to make a bolt for the surface which ends up killing them as they get DCS

Personally I think we screwed things up enough "managing" our land and it's "resources". Resource, the name implies the source gets replenished, but not once Humans get their greedy hands on it. @Sky Man
      Has the ocean floor been mapped? Yes.
      Accurately? ...No.
      The problem is the maps of the totality of the ocean floor hasn't been accurately mapped because thousands of feet of water is quite hard to see through it's why submarines are still a thing. If stealth weren't possible military subs today wouldn't be a thing (because of their cost and overall uselessness outside of being covert).
      The ocean floor is very hard to map. Having maps isn't the same as accurate mapping. The ocean floor a few feet from the coast in Florida that is visible to the naked eye isn't the same as trying to figure out what is underneath miles of water in some places in the same ocean a few hundered miles away from the same coast in the same ocean even if you're directly above the area you want to map.
      So again mapped? Sure. Mapped well? If those 500 year old maps of the world are accurate to you... Then yes, I guess.

      @VariantAEC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Sky Man
      Actually they explained how global organizations will use accurate maps of the the ocean floor for their own benefit. Did you watch the video?
      Most of the stuff humans make isn't for general use and doesn't directly benefit you as an individual.
      If you're healthy you don't know what it's like to need the medical equipment your own species pioneered. Does that mean it doesn't help those that do? I guess according to you it does, right?
