Another common fault on the early 2009-10 models is the ABS module failure, more so on cars that have done over 250K Klm. You will get the ABS & stability control lihht come on and these have to be replaced with another unit with the identical serial number. You cannot just simply get a second hand one from a random used Mazda 3 BL. I had mine reconditioned reinstalled for about $1100usd.

    I own a 2l Disi sport version.
Had problems with the idle being rough and needed fair amount of throttling to avoid stall from standstill.
Cleaned the egr, intake manifold, new filters, gone through acceleration and power learning for the ecu procedure - no joy.
Found out it was the main positive cable loom from the battery had a nasty burnt section, replaced it, replaced the batteries ( start stop system ) and seemed to have aleviated the problem and the idle is steady, but still tends to need throttling from stand still to avoid stall and driving at low speeds in traffic is a nightmare.
Other than that - rust on the under body, it's everywhere.
Nevertheless, love the damn thing 😁

Rust eh? Seems Mazda still did not learn from the 80s and 90s. But it seems models from the past couple of years are good like the CX-5.

Great car, I have the disi 2.0 with the 5spd auto. Only issues I've had, have been rough idle which was a dresses by cleaning the intake manifold and egr valve and tube also the dashboard material has failed. Mazda's are known for weak dashboards but everything else on the car is good the transmission can shift a bit jerky a low speeds but my car has over 150,000kms so it's within spec. Other things to note is the power steering can is a bit noisy but the steering is fine, there was no reduction in the noise after replacing the fluid. Also the istop system can fail although this is likley due to the istop battery being low on voltage. I change the oil every 10,000kms and apart from the issues above the car has been great with decent fuel economy, on the motorway I get on average 7.5 to 7 litres per 100km. At the end of the day no car is perfect, and for the price of these cars and the reliability as well as the fuel economy not to mention the low cost of replacement parts, I'd recommend this car over it's competition.

My 2013 automatic has the classic knocking sounds here and there which I assume is the struts, end links, or the motor mounts? Also the motor just began running loud. 241k miles

Also , the TCM is prone to failure. you will get an A/T warning light appear . This is be assessed thr TCM is mounted on the transmission case ans the electronics cam get damaged due to the heat generated. The early signs are sluggish drive & not willing to change beyond 2 gear when it warms up. There is a video here on YT showing how you can relocate the TCM by making a bracket mounted to the battery box.

It might sounds silly, but if you haven't had the transmission fluid drained and replaced + the transmission filter, these cars get REAL sluggish. Also depends on the model transmission you got; auto 5 speed ford design is troublesome, the 4 speed auto is fine, but the 6 speed auto toyota design is excellent. Recommend having a dealer do the tranmission work since Mazda is a fan of using RTV to make their pan gaskets, and you really don't wanna bend these aluminum pans. Owned a 2012 3 i Grand Touring for almost 6 years and have dodged a few bullets.
See if you can bum a mass airflow sensor from someone's Mazda 3 and drive it around the block and see if that fixes it. OEM part is over $200 (aftermarket MAFs are kinda ass, I find) and takes minutes to replace, so if a fellow wrencher is willing to let you swap, I'd maybe start there. Best of luck if ya still got it, stranger!

Are there any warning lights coming on? How many miles / Klm has it done ?
