    You have a great message and it's the community's fault for not properly applying it. Supports need to learn when to damage and when to heal; timing is everything on every role, even in life.

      You can easily tell a bad DPS when they stop halfway through the match and turn around and stare at you to heal their 30 missing hp instead of getting to a good cover point and waiting to ambush greedy enemies exposing themselves while you heal them up so when the enemy drops in you can ambush them together. Newbie DPS need to get it through their head that they are primarily there to punish greed. When people see Supports exposed they naturally get greedy and try to farm the kill. As a DPS you need to look for these opportunities where you can give these greedy players a slap on the wrist. If you're turning your back on the enemy and getting annoyed because the support doesn't want to heal your barely missing hp in favour of getting picks, you aren't creating any value worth being healed for.

    I used to be gold/plat support for too long simply because I was pocketing the tank, I had tunnel visioning and my positioning was so bad I lost so many games and mad at my teamamtes. Then I learned more about the game and playing around cover, better positioning, using my ultimate as soon as i get it mid fight or before fight and I end up in Masters 3-1. I am only focused on myself. I consistently have the least deaths on my team, yet I still lose a lot - so recently I've been asking myself if I'm taking enough risks or making a real difference despite good stats. I've noticed people often read Awkward's tips the wrong way. They interpret it as a technical truth; as something that can be expressed with numbers or spread sheets. But this is not his thinking style. Awkward is a pragmatist. His prescription has people in mind that want to improve at the game. And for them specifically, he speaks the truth. It's why I'm glad he expressed the counter picking thing again. He elaborates that it robs you of a valuable learning experience. Which is true.

    • @GriFFonRec4
      @GriFFonRec4 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah but if I'm on Dva and the enemy switch to Zar, Mei, Sym there is nothing to be learned there. Your value is greatly diminished, and as far as the tank MU goes, you have to play scared and pick your targets carefully, while the Zar just walks down main and nets twice your value no matter what you do. The 1 or 2 targets you actually CAN dive will just get bubbled and there is no risk to the Zarya for playing this way unless your team makes up the difference.
      You are better off just swapping to a less harsh pick and going from there. Same if I'm on Doom, and the enemy team is on like Mercy, Echo, Lucio, Genji. Like sure, you might be able to net some value somewhere, but your punches are insanely hard to hit, your slams are useless except for as movement. And your ultimate will net 0 value unless you are highly intelligent in your usage. If I'm trying to play Doom and my team is on Soldier/Ashe and the enemy team has Cass, Ana, Zen, Hanzo, you'd have to play out of your mind and literally every single CD that hits you is an instant death (Sleep, nade, Discord+hanzo, flash bang) and you won't be receiving any followup from your team since they are playing the most passive heroes.
      I feel like it's good advice if you are playing Support since they specifically are all jacks of all trades. Damage to an extent can also get away with playing what they want since their value is so low, it really doesn't matter either way. As tank you NEED to swap, and ALL the time. No 2 ways about it. The only reason UR2GMs work is because the players are 10 fold the skill level of the players in the lobby. Now obviously skill doesn't mean their bullets do more damage, but they don't need to "learn" anything. They already have the fundamentals and knowledge and are just passing the "test" so to speak and even then there are always unwinnable games.

      @@GriFFonRec4I was making a reply but yt decided to crash my phone. Your playstyle and way of thinking is what’s limiting your rank. Like you talk about echo, mercy and even genji as if they never touch the ground, as if the entire team only cares about hard countering the tank, and claiming that you “NEED” to swap. No lmao. And then saying dps value is low 💀. And no, even masters plays haven’t got all the fundamentals like literally being next to cover. ZBRA continuously hits rank 1 on tank as a hard doomfist 1 trick while you’re making up such an extreme scenario which involves unrealistic thinking and then you’re making excuses for it being hard to get value of doom including you talking about cass nade and ana as if you’re fighting all of them in like a completely open space without cover

    • @GriFFonRec4
      @GriFFonRec4 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Asgelio Oh, absolutely. I'm 100% the reason I'm stuck in the metal ranks, no doubt. I'm saying the path to getting better is harder on tank because you cannot 1 trick without an extremely steep hill to climb. You say I'm making up an extreme scenario, but that is most games I play Doom and am forced to switch off, otherwise I would just play it out. When I play Dva, I will get the Zar+Sym/Mei swap 90% of my games. Again, it's playable if my team is properly fighting the Zarya, but there are many games where they just fold and let her walk on them for free, and I can't exactly trade favorable with her. In those games I go for the back line, but if the back line consists of a Sym and/or Mei and I have 0 support because they are being bullied by Zar, then I just have to swap to a stronger front line (the underlying issue being I cannot bully their back line due to my lack of skill at handling my counters without outright avoiding them).
      You say those characters touch the ground, and you are correct, the problem is, it's 100% possible for them to dodge YOU as Doom. The openings I have are extremely short, so they only need to be in the air when I'm near them. I can't exactly wait for an Echo to land when she can kill me mid flight. You mention cover, and my issue is diving characters who aren't using much cover in open space. If there is cover to play around, it's easy enough to set up near a corner and bait them into pushing me, but when they can just wide peek me with no consequence I lose my angles and can't match their damage from where I am and usually end up eating a ton of damage while I wait for seismic slam to get me out. I try and take angles my team can see, but usually they just get pushed or otherwise retreat before I can finish setting up (I'm assuming since my only goal is getting out and in those times I get slept or magged I see my team is pushed out while I'm running from 2-3 players). I typically find it easier to play against enemies who are using corners and cover because it's straight forward to take the cover from them and use it myself, but when they are in open space, I have to be in open space to do decent damage against them (also easier to LOS them and close the distance before the dive).
      Maybe my issue is I don't focus tank enough when I'm playing Dive tanks like Dva and Doomfist and I rely on my team too much. The hardest games, and the games where I feel forced to switch are the games where I cannot 1v4 their back line, but their tank is somehow able to. I can consistently get the attention of both supports and usually 1 of the Damage, but when I go to regroup back with my team they are pushed so far back, I'm isolated. If I realize this and swap to Ram, Sig or Zarya the game turns around immediately because now my team has a front line who can actually stand in front of them without bleeding resources and I have heals and damage where I can see it.
      Damage definitely has the lowest value, particularly in the metal ranks. Just exploiting the tank seems to be the best play they can make (again in lower ranks). When I play damage, I pretty much only play Sojourn and flex to Sym in brawl comps and Sombra when we aren't brawl, but I'm not hitting my rails (again way easier to 3 trick on Damage since my only job is to do damage/secure kills). That said, dueling a support or a tank feels like throwing unless I'm up on resources (like I have a full charge rail and they've used a CD or 2). While it's easier to secure first picks, it's also easier to get picked by standing too close or too far from your team (so you either eat incidental spam and die or get poked out and are useless).
      All in all, it's my lack of fundamentals which keeps me low ranked. But bashing my head into a wall isn't really worth the rank up. It's super boring to play Doom into a lot of comps. Even if I can make it work, it's probably by playing super passively, in which case playing Ram or Zarya and abusing the tank focus is usually a better and more interactive answer.

      @Asgelio 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GriFFonRec4 I am not going to read the entire bible but I have been learning dva for 6 hours and already have a 70% win rate with her in masters where more than half of those games have been against zarya. Theoretically, if you don’t play dva like a rein, zarya shouldn’t be much of a problem as you should be boosting around on off-angles looking for dive opportunities. Even better, the other team probably shouts at their tank “go zarya and we win” bcs then if I have a bastion on my team, it is literally a free win bcs they have literally never played zarya before and are hella straight up awful
      You should only be focussing their tank as a dive if you’re either stalling time while building ult charge or you don’t see a clear dive opportunity. Yes it somehow happens that an orisa can somehow end up 1v4ing your entire team but as long as you set up a dive correctly by off angling instead of hard passive frontlining like a rein. Despite my 70% win rate, ppl have been toxic just bcs they literally have not a clue on how to play dive and think that they’re dying bcs of that even tho cover exists. Dive characters do have a much riskier playstyle than other tanks but you learn boundaries and how to cycle cooldowns much more effectively. Your main goal is to distract with MAX uptime so without dying and hiding and then as soon as you’re in danger, go back to your team early enough so you don’t die. You would get better with dive if you play kiri,moira, tracer, reaper etc, bcs you’re low hp and will be able to recognise opportunities of value,how to set up an off angle not too far from your team when to disengage. If you watch ZBRA’s doomfist, he literally spend most his time away from his team which is somewhat how you should also play dva meaning zarya shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Anything I say here anyway wouldn’t even probably be taken up by you since this is literally just a comment without any direct demonstration like an U2GM shows but just watch ZBRA, literally be continuously off angling unless you’re able to effectively stall time. But then you never know when to off angle with specific character bcs you don’t try it if you swap off the dive characters, always focus killable squishies as that’s what generates the most pressure since they need to be healed immediately. Shooting a tank will just be a stalemate or you play incorrectly and 100 charge zarya destroys you. And really importantly, don’t die
      The tracer U2GM by awkward is great for the fundamentals of how to play dive with short range characters.

      @@GriFFonRec4 I onetricked dva from plat to masters with 80% winrate. Enemy probably swaps zarya 1/3 games, maybe even more often. Nobody has good bubble management below masters. I know, because I main zarya myself. Zarya becomes a squishy when she's out of bubbles.
      Play angles, pay attention to her bubbles and you'll find windows to punish her team for poor management all the time. Dva is not a frontliner, she is a hypermobile assassin oneshot tank.
      Staying determined instead of swapping off dva gave me a way greater understanding of the game in the long run, which led to me hitting D1 on dps and support the same season. When I was plat on those roles several seasons in a row. And even that became easy, on my offroles.
      On paper, counterswapping has obvious advantages. But now you have to learn how to play those heroes, and how to actually capitalise on the counter advantage properly.
      People in lower elo know the counter swaps, but they don't have a solid grasp on how to play the matchups. If you onetrick (or twotrick), you'll learn to play every matchup, while the enemy plays for the "on paper" advantage. YOU know exactly what to do, and the enemy is a headless chicken on a counter hero.
      Is it awesomesauce to play dva against zarya+sym? Maybe not. Will you win anyways? Of course. You have the required knowledge and experience (with practise) to maneuver it.
      Tank has been a pretty challenging role for a while, but fighting through it is the road to mastery. Be like sisyphus. Push that boulder up the mountain.
      (To prove my point on counters: on zarya vs rein, below diamond you can literally just walk past him and kill the backline. Because all rein thinks about is "I'm rein I counter zarya, yippie!". Try it, it's a legitimate cheatcode for metal rank.)

    • @wicked5999

      @@maodecavalo You push up to take space before the enemy respawns. They now have to spend resources *before* they even get to contest, which means they will be at a disadvantage in the fight. If everyone sits on the payload (or the point), the enemy can walk up for free with all their cooldowns ready, full hp etc.
      Go forwards and grab a nice position, deal damage, force cooldowns etc.
      Why sit afk on the payload when you could be 10m forwards on that juicy high ground before the enemy gets there?
      Imagine if the defending team at the start of the round waited until the attackers doors opened before leaving spawn themselves. Makes no sense, right? Why not go set up in preparation for the attackers? It's kind of the same thing.

    • @mycelia_ow
      @mycelia_ow 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Flats, Jay3, KarQ, mL7, and Spilo all disagreed with Awkward on this take of counters. It's far more nuanced than Awkward makes it seem.
      His idea behind it isn't wrong or anything, but it mostly applies to high-rank players, and shouldn't always apply regardless. All of the creators I mentioned above have given some excellent points on this. Swapping increases your chances of winning at the end of the day. Also probably better to be versatile, that's needed in T500 matches.
      That's gonna climb you quicker and more guaranteed than playing 10x more games refusing to swap. Not to mention your teammates aren't gonna like it. F to your endorsement level in that case. Even if you find some success some of the time refusing to swap in lower ranks, it's not gonna last outside of metal ranks I can assure that.
      It's just funny that in his video about this, he was mainly playing in metal ranks. The funny thing about that should be self-explanatory. It works so well for him not just because he's such a high rank, but the people in his games were of magnitudes lower elo. Just something to consider.

    • @brianhohl6049
      @brianhohl6049 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@mycelia_owthe way you are viewing the issue is inherently wrong. I’d argue that high ranks is when counterswapping does actually become more relevant, because everyone is equally good and the room to grow is low.
      At low ranks, counterswapping means not learning to play certain heroes in difficult scenarios. If you counterswap every time things are difficult you never learn how to play in those difficult situations.
      “But I can just swap every time the enemy is playing my counters”, well no actually that isn’t always true for a few reasons. For example, on some maps with some team comps it might be better to play a character despite one or two counters on the enemy team simply because of playstyle synergy reasons. Your “counter” might not work too well with the team comp they’re playing with or on the map they’re playing on, or your team might work much better with the character you’re playing than with the counterswap you would switch to. To view things as simply as “this character counters this so I need to switch” is too simplistic.
      Another example, sometimes the enemy will swap to a “counter” for you because they weren’t able to deal with your playstyle on the hero they were playing before. You aren’t aware of this until you’re already out of spawn and the team fight is happening, maybe you also are halfway to ult. Do you go back into spawn and waste time? Do you go back if you die and waste ult?
      The fact of the matter is, it’s inevitable that you’ll get into situations against hero’s who make it difficult for you to play your character a certain way. If you always swap off asap whenever that happens, you’re never actually learning OTHER WAYS to play your character in order to still get value. Youre actually just forcing yourself to only know how to play each character ONE way, when in reality there many ways to switch up your playstyle to get the same value on that character.
      The fact that tons of one trick players exist in top 500 is literal proof that you don’t NEED to counterswap to win the game. In contenders and OWL that’s not the case because teams have more communication, but in regular ladder it is a fact. People always say “but those are top 500 players” yea, that’s the point. If counters were such a requirement to play the game, those people wouldn’t be able to get into top 500 or even into high ranks at all because the mechanics of the game wouldn’t allow it, but we know that isn’t the case.
      The truth of it boils down to this when you’re “countering” someone, it just means you’re effectively making a certain playstyle difficult. Some characters naturally are inclined to be good against certain playstyles. If a Pharah normally plays up in the sky against a junkrat that sits on point, that junkrat won’t be able to do much against Pharah. If he switches to Ashe, then the Pharah won’t be able to play up in the sky as easily. BUT at any point the junkrat could have switched things up by positioning around areas where he can bomb jump into Pharah and 1 shot her (Pharah has a huge hitbox), or he could’ve switched positions to be indoors where Pharah can’t do much and instead he focuses on killing Pharah backline. Or if he switches to Ashe, the Pharah also has other options. She doesn’t have to just continue to play in the open sky and get “countered” she can play more like a typical tracer, staying out of sight lines and focusing the open targets while slowly getting into range of Ashe to boop into her and 2 shot her.
      If you have no idea what you’re doing, you’re 5/10, and you can’t think of any good ideas on how to switch up how you’re playing to come back, then yea you should just switch to something you do know how to play into the enemy. But in those situations you should also go back and look at your replays and think how could I have played differently to not get shit on so hard, and maybe watch some videos of top 500s or unranked to gms to get ideas of how other people might play that character in different scenarios. But it’s about learning the characters and how they can be played, just learning the meta and counters is too simple if you actually want to get good at the game.
      TLDR; Counters on playstyles exist, but counters on entire hero’s don’t. If you don’t ever try learn how your hero should be played against difficult matchups, you’ll never get better at that hero.

      @@mycelia_ow Yeah, I think you have it backwards. Counter picking is most useful at the top ranks. The way you win a disadvantaged matchup is by capitalizing on others' mistakes while limiting your own. In lower ranks, mistakes happen often and you're less likely to be punished for your own. In the top ranks, mistakes can be rare and will be punished often. The existence of OTPs in top 500 proves that any one tricks in lower ranks have a skill issue, save for a few heroes in a legitimately weak state.

      @@mycelia_ow if you just swap when there’s a “counter”, you will just not learn anything. And no you absolutely do not need to learn multiple characters “that’s needed in T500 matches” there are so many 1 trick players that are consistently top 100, even top 10 on their role and never swap. Ppl don’t counter swap as often in be high ranks bcs either it would be to a character they don’t know how to play or they just straight up know for a fact that the person would have enough playtime and experience to know how to handle all the “counters”.
      And if you’re in a metal rank, you should not give a shi about what “advice” your tm8s give you bcs their ass is probably hardstuck and then actually taking advice from metal ranks rather than awkward is just undoubtedly wrong if they don’t align. I was literally playing dva yesterday and was 27 5 and my 13 10 DPS told me to swap just cus the other tank went zarya. I was hard carrying his ass. And then he told me to “play with the team more”. Bro I currently have a 70% win rate from DIVING as a DIVE tank yet this dps in MASTERS thinks I should play like a rein to further protect him that never uses cover. Ofc we won bcs I know how to slightly adjust my playstyle against zaryas rather than swapping. Also I have never met a single soul who has cared about their endorsement level other than quick play mercys.

    100% agree on all points but aim trainers ARE useful. I was bouncing between low diamond and plat for a while before realising I had AWFUL mouse control. After grinding aim labs(free) for like 2 weeks I felt MORE CONFIDENT to try more risky plays. Now I can easily stay at diamond 2. It isn't THAT much difference in rank but I'm having way more fun now that I can hit shots and just need to work on game sense, positioning, timing, etc.
    I think content creators underestimate how having good aim gives you more reassurance. Especially if they always had good aim or been at a high level for a long time.
    The advice needs to be:
    A) use it as a gym, a focused area to get a lot of reps to improve your skill
    B) Find modes related to OW and use OW settings
    C) Use it along side deathmatch and other modes to get reps in VS real players AND use i game aim training codes like VAXTA

    Like I really disagree on number 20 as a "rule" opposed to just advice to be pro-active. If I'm genji for example and have blade, I could go dry and it might work, or I might be 2 tapped. Mid reward, high risk. Meanwhile if I wait 40 seconds ana who is being slow on nano, I'm confident that 90% of the time we'll win the fight and the point.
    Other times my team is dominating and winning fights before I even have a chance to ult. I don't think I should ult as just a "I haven't clicked this button in a while" when we're winning the fights regardless and I can pop it when shit get's hairy. No other content creator is as effective as you and i watched a lot of soldier 76 videos!
    Thank you awkward, now my ambition is off limits and i believe i can go to diamond and maybe masters!

    Awkward, this is such a good video! This is the most concise but most impactful video on TH-cam for overwatch. This is why you are and will always be, the best overwatch coach.

    i watched this vid after another one of you about aiming a lil older and i love to see that here you mention some things you also did in that other video, cause imo this shows how you actually realised that those things weren't good and trying to make others aware of that too
    btw i found this very helpful, some of these tips i already knew and try to follow and others did not, i think you explained them pretty well and more players should at least know and try to follow them

    some of these aren't mistakes at all, you're just shoving your own ideas on everyone. jumping or not jumping works. swapping works, period, you just gave a bad example where you don't know the hero. solution is to train with X hero, or switch to a hero you know, and when you can play a handful of heros, you can successfully swap.
    telling players to swap works. "focus on what you can control", you can control what hero to play, so control the situation properly to win.
    argument contextually works, i was arguing with a hero coice and I won the argument, they switched, then we won the match. it's because i knew better and hero swapping works.
    your "solutions to mistakes" results in toxic individualist behavior in a team based game.

    Your against counterpicking argument could just as easily be used in favor of counterpicking. You say you'll never learn how to play your hero if you swap off during moments of duress, but I'd argue that you'll never learn where a hero is applicable if you don't first practice playing it in the best matchups. Sure you can 1-trick Rein into mauga/bap/kiri, but why not practice your sigma against a good set of players that will force you to get better at a hero you're bad at?

    I do have a question @awkward2. I’m not sure of the balance between ‘damage before the fight’ and ‘engaging too early’. Doesn’t damage before the fight imply that the team isn’t with you in that moment and you are engaging early for an advantage? So when should you seek damage before the fight and when should you wait for your team to setup?
    I also wanted to ask what does waiting mean? Does it mean hiding and setting up or does that mean shooting at the enemies from a safe distance?
    Please do let me know if I have misunderstood these concepts. Love your videos Awkward. Keep up the great work!

    Thank you awkward, I was baptiste main and was stuck in silver, i was healbotting and i thought i was really good at it, but your perspective completely changed my playstyle, i always had good aim, once i applied your rules I got to gold like in an hour. I dont play like how you destroy the lobby but now I can feel I have an impact like Im carryong a game taking a support..... Feels goos

    I've been bronze since season 3 in overwatch 1, I only started climbing recently when I decided to stop going into comp getting mad at a loss and trying to force a win and backed off to quick play to remind myself why I enjoy the game, if you're not having fun you're not going to win

    i agree with 99% of this video.
    but the first tip about always using abilities? you need to rephrase that.
    you need to juggle abilities. Always have one ready. This is ofcourse situational and some characters this matter more for than others.
    but i cant name a single hero where using your abilities all the time is a good idea.
    Take Zarya, what are you gonna do when you used all your bubbles?
    or Moira's fade? you'll want some abilities ready for use and not just use them cus you can.

    Invaded by smurfs, boosted people, stacks cheaters, the matchmaking is broken. Sure you can improve rank up to diamond plat alone against them but that s it. Just dont play alone if you want a good tip ...

    I have to say i have greatly improved from being average and inconsistent to becoming the best player in my team and many times on both teams by using Awkward’s advice. But i have to say self improvement is not enough to win. Many times i cant do enough to carry the team, only consolation is that i learn from my mistakes but im still stuck. When i play with ppl who also know what they are doing, is when i win.

    All great tips but I somewhat disagree with the counter picking tip. A lot of times switching a character is the difference between winning and losing I understand learn to play against your counters is good but counter picking isn’t a mistake. Also aim trainers isn’t bad it helps you warm up and improve but I’m talking about the in game ones
