I had very good luck with our first Dodge Journey. It was a 2013 with the 3.6 liter V6. We bought another Dodge Journey GT with the 3.6 liter V6. Never had a problem and gets 28 mpg on the highway. Plus it pulls our 18' in-board/out-board boat with no issues. Gas mileage does drop to 19 mpg towing at 75 mph.
My friend's BMW X5 power steering warning light comes on and off. The dealer replaced the module for $3,000. It didn't solve the problem. The problem then said it was due to her driving "profile": the car wasn't driven often enough and that causes the battery to dissipate, hence the power steering warning light. Hard to believe. Yes, it seems like a money pit.
@@RED5standing-by I bought an x5 November 15th. It's been in the dealer more than i drove it and it only has 48,000km. Sold with bumper to bumper warranty until you bring it in. Sorry we don't cover that. Spent a week, came back after 2k.. nothing was fixed. Now they have tonfix something else.. awesome
I sold cars for two years, we hated to see Land Rovers come in for trade ins. The owners would get so mad when we gave them a trade in price. Trust me, no car make depreciates quicker in value than a Land Rover.
All luxury complicated cars depreciate like stones ! In past paid by companies - now leasing seems to have taken over - some great lease bargains if looked after properly
When I had plenty of money I bought a Range Rover. I still have it and it is stunningly beautiful, but so are the bills I get every other few months. I did get 200,000 miles out of her. Cost me $109,000 back in 2006. My favorite all time car. I don't have the heart to part with her just yet. She still drives like a dream.
It's a smaller SUV but I've owned 4 Blazer's throughout the years. They're great. Relatively cheap to fix and relatively easy to work on and they're dependable. I had one that made it to 425,000 miles on the original motor and transmission and the 4wd still worked great
In Austrailia there is an old aboriginal saying: "If you want to go out into the Bush, get a Land Rover..... If you want to come back out as well, get a Toyota "
Scott is simply a mastermind in cars...all he has been preaching for such a long time now is so right....unfortunately for myself, I can give you more or less the exact same advice like Scotty after throwing more than 100k in buying a few of these cars and trying to maintain them properly which is simply unobtainable not just because of the cost of the parts but because brand new original parts are still of the same low quality
@@willisix2554 That will depend on the year, model and maintenance each individual car has had. In Germany, many taxi companies still use Mercs - and they wouldn't do that if total costs of ownership flew in their face.
@@willisix2554 I used to own a 1992 Merc 190 E 1.8 as a daily driver for 12 years and I've got a 1993 SL 320 as a fine weather car for 15 years now. I had no problems with the 190 at all and the worst thing I had with the SL was a head gasket needing replacement. Sure, an SL is less zippy than a Porsche but even an SL engine is mass produced for use in several other product lines and generally easy to access and to work. Living in Germany with lots of knowledgeable independent mechanics around and with a good supply of spares helps, too.
I owned X5 E90 for 9 nine years. Spent 15k or more in maintenance. One day it stopped in the middle of the freeway. I had enough. I sold it for 5K. Mileage was 119K miles. It's the worst vehicle I've ever owned when it comes to reliability. Scotty is so right about it.
I bought my wife a Land Rover LR2 a little over a decade ago, and while she loved the vehicle and it never really gave us much trouble while we had it, once the warranty lapsed, just the routine services priced us out of keeping it. It was ridiculous.
I have owned a BMW X3 for 5 years, and I officially have put in the exact amount of money in repairs; as the price I bought the vehicle at. Please avoid at all costs.
@Shelik Hodge further details. I purchased it in 2017 at $9,200. I only use it for mostly in town use, occasionally making the 3 hours drive to visit family, and it has gone on one 800 mile (roundtrip) road trip. I have put roughly $8,000 alone in regular maintenance. The oil leaks are really rough (as he said in the video), not just a few drops, but there will be a pool of oil on the ground typically, I always joke "hey, I don't need an oil change ever if im constantly leaking and just refilling it constantly". but also what he said about the electronic sensors is the most accurate, these parts break rapidly, and are extremely expensive.
I bought a 2008 X3 6 years ago with 90k miles on it. I did my research on it. 3.0 Inline 6 is pretty bullet proof and it’s not turbo so you don’t have to worry about that going wrong. It has over 150k miles now and all I’ve done to it was coils and valve cover gasket, less than $1000 total repairs. Been a pretty sweet ride. But we are going to get a 4Runner once my tundras paid off, I like knowing that my car will last forever lol.
My advise too if you have a bmw or want one, learn to do the repairs yourself and the cost is a lot more manageable. The stealer ship is where they get your money!
I'm a professional mechanic that does a lot of warranty work for Carmax. I can tell you this list is absolutely correct. Avoid anything GM with a 6L80e and a Dodge with a 62Te
I had a coworker of mine do car flipping on the side. He was deep in the high end scene with a 3.7 million dollar house to get an idea of his business man lifestyle. He always told me the best luxury cars to buy were Acura and Lexus. Nothing else. He said they hold there value so well and never break down. Told me Land Rover and German cars may seem luxury, but that they are so unreliable, the computers and electronics break all the time, and they loose so much value so fast! This was explained to me long before I discovered Scotty and is infinite wisdom on cars.
@michael lee 75 lbs overweight with blue hair and tattoos all over their chests and arms. Three kids by four different dads and they're looking for a sucker to pay their way and to pay for their mistakes.
@Ta Blet It's best to avoid women right now. Avoid them like you'd avoid a high mileage 10 year old Chrysler Sebring with their terrible self-grenading 2.7 V6.
My friend owns one from like 2014 and he beats on it like crazy. It’s fine apparently but I guess that’s only 5 years ago so what does that show?! Haha!
Omg yes had an ex that i broke up with. she always hated on my civic her next boyfriend had a rogue and guess who ended up driving him around all the f'in time. ha and yes 4 years later the civic still runs great did the timing belt and water pump and coil packs thats it.
I can't find the story of remember the exact details , but it's something like this: A guy wins a brand new one in some kinda lottery or raffle , and 45mins later on the way home he needs a tow truck because it's broken.
Completely agree with the BMW X5. 2012 Worst car I ever bought. You didn’t even mention that water leaks into the engine because of the cheap plastic engine parts. Car broke down & wouldn’t start. 3 weeks in the dealership and it broke down again in a day.
I own a 2003 BMW X5. Awesome suv. Many BMW mechanics own this year of X5. When I ask my mechanic why he has one, her told me it's because it's the last year before they started adding a bunch of tech that is designed to break down in order to make repair sales and keep BMW owners incentivised to trade in for the latest model.
I buy only used car/truck. Have a 99 chevy tahoe (LT 4wd, 4 doors, im about to sell it) bought it $5k about 10 years ago, it has 194k miles, only did regular maintenance (i dobeverything myself) i also changed tge starter and the radiator but thats it. Also had a 98 jeep wrangler that i also bought used for $5k. Kept it for a bit over 10 years and sold it 2 month ago with 212 k miles for.....$5k. Same i replace the radiator, the water pump, starter and then regular maintenance. There is no reason to buy new cars/ truck, let someone loose their money on a new vehicle. Its only a tool that you need for a certain job. Myself i need 4wd and space (going a lot camping, hunting, hiking, fishing with kid and dogs) i couldnt care less about the look as long as it function the way i need it to. I just bought an 06 h3 for $11500. Thats the most expensive vehicle i ever bought but i should be able to keep it for 10 years
I imagine some fat guy wearing clothes that are too small with a face reddening and constantly tucking in a shirt while sweating from his male pattern balding head.
That 50 yr. old guy that bought the Land Rover for the 20 yr. old girlfriend, reminds me of the old saying...….. "If it has tits or wheels on it = lots of $$$"
Land Rover are the worst for reliability perioid might as well buy a Chrysler there is no difference huge electronic problems and the mechanical parts are not much better.
just because Americans cant fix Land Rovers it doesnt make them all bad. Freelander's are solid. First gen Range Rover Sport are miles better than Merc/BMW/Audi. Discovery 3 with a petrol V8 will run forever, too. Evoque is good, too. Upper models and past 2013 models can be expensive to run after warranty, but hey, if you buy the most versitile vehicle in its class with the original sticker price over 100k what do you expect? Its not a toyota, it actually goes, stoppes and is safe and comfortable.
Old land rovers are perfectly fine IF they’ve been properly maintained. Obviously you can’t control whether the previous owner did proper regular maintenance. But if you do find a good one it will last forever, especially the diesels, v8s not so much. Newer ones aren’t too great I’ve heard but never seen or worked on them to know. I reckon it’s probably electrical crap and not mechanical as is the failure with most modern cars
I've had my Equinox for 13 years so far and it's still running great. I just purchased a new car, but kept my Equinox because it's the second best car I ever bought. I don't have the heart to part with it. This is only one guy's opinion. Always remember that.
He’s right about the BMW X5. I had one that was in the shop 5x a year. Everything broke on this car: window regulators, door locks, tail light assembly, head gasket, on and on. $500 to replace the battery. Brakes and rotors replaced and resurfaced every 2 years $2000. Never again
Anyone that pays $500 for a battery deserves what they get. Also, brakes every 2 years on a sports car is not bad. But if you had your discs resurfaced (big mistake) and still paid $2K then you have more money than sense. But after owning 2 Bimmers myself - "never again"
Bmw take unique batteries, they need to be programmed with the cars software as the battery age the battery adjusts the power surge so it will not harm the sensitive electrical equipment
I have a 2012 Vw Tiguan with 224,000km had it since new and I’ve had minimal issues. To be fair the timing chain is starting to wear and the serp belt needs to be replaced now but as long as you maintain it and fill it up with 93 octane turbo the entire life of the car it will be fine
@@roydencort3830 because over there is cheaper to fix and mechanics actually fix them instead of just replacing parts like our "certified mechanics" here
I purchased my 1999 Kia Sportage when it was a year old. It has 198000 miles on it and still runs great. Very few mechanical issues along the way other than the typical timing belt changes.
I had one too. Had been treated ruf. Looked like was in a pond a yr. Still ran fine. The 4wd worked about 4 daz. I traded my Ranger work truck in cas was so lame in snow. Now have a 20005 CRV. Love it Soooo.
I like to take the time to say thanks Scotty for showing us the "true cost" of one of those exotic vehicles -it's good there's somebody looking out for the general public, thanks for having our back.
If you like Toyota, consider a Rav-4. It makes NO sense to use a car, or especially sports car name on an SUV. Mitsubishi Eclipse "cross" is greatly being frowned on!!
There are still many good SUVs/Crossovers on the planet. Like CX5, HRV, RAV4, Forester, Santafe, XL7, MUX, to name a few. Heck, you can buy a used Land Cruiser and it will outlive you.
My family learned by the late '80s it was Japanese (Toyota and Honda, in particular) or be prepared for endless maintenance. Apparently, little has changed.
So very true! Subaru belongs in that group with Honda and Toyota; and during the period from 1970s thru mid/late 90’s, Datsun/Nissan was a Japanese car manufacturer that produced really good cars). AND then Renault bought them-and their cars have been 💩 ever since!

I have owned a BMW X3 for 5 years, and I officially have put in the exact amount of money in repairs; as the price I bought the vehicle at. Please avoid at all costs.
Woah...thats crazy
@Shelik Hodge 2010, don't get me wrong, I love this car a lot, but just expect to put in $5,000-10,000 in repairs.
@Shelik Hodge further details.
