I actually had to buy a r6ii for a wedding because of how bad the r5ii was. It’s only good in 8k or 4k fine. I debating sending it back. Not only is it soft but the overblown hi lights actually have a yellow fringe.
I hope people fined this video helpful. Or cannon just lets us shoot 4k fine 60 not only 30.

Thanks for the honest opinion. I'm a Sony User actually and had a chance to try the A7RV for video and the pixel binning is quite incredibly good, but it produces artifacts when shooting with everything in focus (widangle, landscapes, hyperfocal in general). It's a huge improvement over the A7R4 line skipping.
That Canon 4k60p line skipping in 2024 for that price and whit that fast sensor is insane, I mean it sounds like an imposed cripple/limitation, I can't believe they did it.
And moreover no one talks about it. I expected at least a pixel binning...

He just said he has a c70. For other professionals, mirrorless cameras are actually a better value than camcorders. Not sure what you mean by “smoother zoom”. If you’re shooting with an integrated lens, you really don’t understand filmmaking vs photography 😂

I think we can respectfully agree to disagree. I did watch the video to the end and I understand your points. 4k 60 is softer than R6 II, which I own both. I understand that you are mostly video so this camera may have not been the best choice for the money as well and I think the c400 or c80 would be better for your needs. I've been testing the R5 II like crazy since release day and read through the 1200 plus page online manual to make sure my findings were correct. Where I disagree is your conclusion on sRAW. sRAW 60 is so sharp and has much more detail than clog 2 4k 60. I did a few videos on it on my channel, but from what the manual says about sRAW on all FPS it is oversampled. I reached out earlier today to the Canon Cinema Rep and they couldn't conclude if it is or isn't oversampled in sRAW 60 based on the same manual so they are reaching out to the engineer team and getting back to me. I also did not have the same issues or results as you did when editing sRAW. What editor do you use, because in DaVinci Resolve it is super clean and more accurate in color than even clog 2? I'm editing on a 48" OLED and there is a big difference in colors with sRAW in a good way over clog 2. Both are great, but the 12bit in sRAW is able to be pushed so much more in Resolve. I do appreciate your perspective and I think the c400 will be much better for your needs.

    • @JaredHoyman
      @JaredHoyman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

@@franreinaphoto I read your comment and didn't want to just answer your questions with opinion but actually look at footage I have shot with it over the last month and pixel peep. That being said I just spent an hour looking at sraw 60, sraw 24 and Clog 2 60fps so I can give you an honest perspective from another R5II. Michael is correct in what he is seeing. In 4k 60 sraw once you zoom in 2x or more you can see the artifacting, but it is not easy to notice it at 1x. 4k 60 clog 2 is much much much cleaner, but you lose some sharpness. To be fair clog2 60fps does give it more of a filmic look not being so digitally over sharpened and I like it. In sRAW 24fps the image is SO much cleaner than sraw 60, and if you zoom in you don't see the same artifacting as sraw 60. So far I prefer sRAW for its flexibility over clog2 in post, but clog 2 is amazing as well. The moral of the story is that for people like Michael the c400 or c80 is better suited. For a hybrid shooter like me and my business the r5 II is amazing. Hope that helps!

@@JaredHoyman Thanks mate. Just got the mkII and this video made me panic a bit. I film underwater, so things are tricky enough! The main reason I upgraded was the colour grading in clog2, the increase in options in 4K and sound being recorded at 120fps. I'd be interested in your opinion on me starting with 4K60 in clog2? Thanks again.

Thanks for the feedback, I like hearing from other actual videographers vs TH-cam reviewers, and the amount of time you put into this video is appreciated. I have the R5II and will start doing my own testing in the next couple of days. I was aware before getting the R5II that the 4K60 is line skipped which is disappointing but wasn't a dealbreaker for me. TBH I have the C70 and IMO it is softer than anything I get out of the R5 and probably softer than anything I will get out of the R5II as well.
It doesn't bother me because you can always add post sharpness. The C70 footage gets incredibly sharp with a touch of post sharpening as does the R5 and I am pretty sure the R5II will be the same way. With the 4K60 SRAW, it is straight off the sensor so no denoising or sharpening has been applied to it, if you post sharpen the SRAW it will actually get much sharper than the C70 or R8.
Post sharpening is a standard step in editing both photos and videos, as long as the footage was shot with a good codec, at a good data rate, and the subject matter was in focus, post sharpening can make the image as soft or as sharp as you want. The R8 probably looks better right out of camera because it is probably applying some sort of in camera sharpening and denoising; the fact it is oversampling vs line skipping definitely helps as well but probably not as much as you would think.
Congrats on getting the C400, I am eyeing it as well, but most of my work is run and gun hybrid photo/video work so the R5II was a better fit for me. If the C70 wasn't so good I would consider replacing it with the C400. Looking forward to your thoughts on the C400.

Thank you for your comment. Best comment ive seen all day on this video. Yes I agree the C70 is a soft out of camera. But like you said I can always touch it up in post and it looks amazing. With the R5 2 I tried doing what I always do with the C70 and of course some other methods and it just looks nasty to me. I was using one of the highest Bit Rates it had in 4k 60. I have to say though maybe im just spoiled with the C70 image quality and im expecting the Canon R5 2 to match it.
I use the R8 and C70 together all the time and it matches very well with the C70.
Yes I use Raw quite a bit and know that I have to clean that footage up a little but when the SRAW totally changes the colors it just through me off lol. Regular Raw I can handle and fix it up nice and pretty. But SRAW just looks nasty to me.
Looking forward for when the C400 ships. Maybe that one can be the Full Frame version of the C70 lol. Maybe not though because of the DGO Sensor. Lol

@@MichaelJohnsonProductions I did quite a bit of testing today and it is official, I will never use SRAW out of the R5II, the color shift and chromatic aberration is not worth it in the R5II when shooting SRAW. The XF-HEVC S 4K fine @ 30FPS and XF-HEVC S 4K@60FPS looked much better than the SRAW. The SRAW also does something strange to the exposure, I couldn't tell if it was increasing the DR or just increasing the overall exposure, but the exposure changes when switching to it from one of the compressed options.
The good news for me at least is the 4K60FPS compressed looked sharper than the 4K30FPS Fine with a touch of post sharpening so it will work for my main needs. SRAW is so new it is possible that Davinci Resolve will need an update to properly read it, I have a hard time believing it is really as bad as it looked on my screen.

But starting to think I'm way better off saving a tonne of money.. getting the R6mkii.. only thing I would have liked is a bit of 120fps option.. but otherwise the r6 does seem like the bang for buck option.. and maybe spending money on a new 70-200 l2.8 would bring about a better overall result! Edit: I've since read you can get 120 at 1080p.. I think that is quite usable anyway!

the answer is very simple, the R5II is a great camera for 12bit 8k60 raw and 10bit 8k30 & 4k30 fine because it uses ten ull sensor read out or supersampling. for me it's great to shoot 8k60 raw as in post I can do slow motions and can do digital paning and zooming in without loss of quality. all olther formates like 4k60, 4k120 and sraw a downsampled with line scipping / pixel binding which causes less details less sharpness an aliassing on contrasty lines. there is only one additional mode for 4k60 which gives you the full quality and this is the 4k60 cropped mode (S35 / aps-c) because then, the R5II supersamples the resulting 4k60 cropped image from the cropped appr 6k resolution. if you need a clean 4k60 or great 4k120 or the best low light camera, you should better use a 24MP cam like the R6II or R6 or for professional use the R3. thats the reason why I still have my R3 besite my new R5II, the R5II only for 8k60 raw and the R3 for low light conditions and 4k120

@@Andrew_Nekrasov The R5II is the jack of all trades but master of none, a perfect swiss knife for hybride creatives, but not a full size video machine. That's what one should keep in mind. It's a 750 gramms 8k60 12bit raw machine which fits into your pocket, but it's not build for endless 8k raw recordings. It has multi formate options for every need, but not all formates are supersampled, some are downsampled with more ore less loss of quality. You should know what to do with this camera and Canon should better communicate their camera line up in terms of best specific user cases for every model. One more point here regarding the test from Michael Johnson, 4k sraw is definitlely not as worse as he described it, it's not as good as original 8k raw due to line scipping / pixel binding but is way better than the 4k 60/120 10bit formates.

Sounds like you're pretty much a videophotographer. Did you not know the 4K 60 wasn't oversampled when you bought it? If your primary use for a camera is mainly video, why would you even buy a hybrid like this? I'm a stills photographer that shoots mainly wildlife and that would be like me buying an R5C for my stills photography because once in while I might shoot some video clips. I think your choice for C400 was great one, from reviews I have seen I think you're going to love it. I personally never understood the whole 8K video thing myself, from most of hybrid camera reviews I have seen 24MP Hybrid seem to be the sweet shot for downsampled 4K footage, don't have overheating issues, much smaller files, etc. I do agree with your assessment of Canon's marketing, because they hype up the video features so much and not the what this camera really excels at which is fast action stills photography. The stills photography is nothing short of amazing, that shoots some really good video too. Hope you like you new C400.

    1. Your Side by Side comparison at 4:33, are you using the Same Lense OR Same Lense and Adapter (RF to EF)?
    2. RAW will not look good straight out of camera, shooting RAW you are expected to Color Correct and then Color Grade your footage (Hopefully people use the right Color Gamut and Color Space), it is not meant to be used straight out of camera.
    3. As for your argument about 8k File Size at 5:40, I use 8K RAW for my commercial shoot 25% of the time for the flexibility in Post for the shoots that will require me zoom in and add Motion Graphics, then I have 2 outcomes, "First Outcome" I have it Archived for 45 Days after completing the project for the client, then send the full folder to the client (RAW, Davinci Timeline, Finals) then Delete and keep Finals. "Second Outcome" I keep either the RAW or Downsize to 4k or 1080p Resolutions of the footage from clients to be used for the Future.

      1. Same camera same lens same everything. 24-70 RF 2.8. Only difference was 4k 30 and 4k 60 as I said in the video.
      2. I never said in the video it should look great straight out of camera. I just said it looks amazing. And yes I am aware that you have to color correct then color grade. Most people that are interested in a camera like this are aware of that. It's almost like you are commenting on the wrong video. Either that or I didn't explain myself clearly in the video. Which is possible I guess.
      3. Yes I am aware on how raw can be beneficial I use it all the time on my C70. It's not 8k Raw but it's simply amazing. My argument was the time wasted in waiting for the camera to cool down and waiting for your computer to downsize or render the 16 hours of footage for a single day. With two camera's shooting all day. If you have the privilege of shooting short clips. That is amazing. I'm happy for you. There is a reason cinema camera's have fans in them. It's for people that shoot all day in the hot sun shooting really high formats. Like myself. The Canon R5 One or Two would not last 5 minutes in the heat. Trust me I tried it.
And like I said if you have the time to downsize your footage then good for you but my time is spent trying to get things done. It just dont make since for the type of shooting I do. I understand small projects of course that would work but not long days with multiple camera's running.
      I do appreciate your comment.

And people always recommend A7Siii FX3 when it comes to video. Well in most cases they are probably OK, but after 4 years they are aging and lack a lot of features that others have, e.g. lower resolution, no animal autofocus, soft 4K120 and no pre-roll. Videography is just as vast, if not vaster, use case as photography. Recommendation should be use case centric and bespoke. Thanks for the great review BTW.

I did note that the SRAW has a different colour cast when testing myself, but I think that’s down to the standard’s post processing.
SRAW undoubtedly looks better, I am not sure how you came to the conclusion that it was bad?

Well Nikon dropped the price on the red, so its actually cheaper and better than the canon c400...go figure. Yeah that is a dumb omission on canon's part, but that might be something they could fix with firmware...I mean if it can do 8kp60 albeit in raw, why the hell not oversampled 4kp60...can't be a horsepower problem. So the fan did keep the 4kp60 going? Its just the line skipping bs that makes it soft and therefore unusable for you? I've used mine with regular grip on two outside texas days (99-101 F), all 120fps HEVC 4:2:0 10-bit and it worked great capturing b-roll clips (was not recording it continuously, and had about 66% time in shade). So capturing short clips to show the festivities/activities for some fundraiser videos. I did see two bars appear outside after running it for about 4 minutes, but literally as soon as I stopped recording the bars dropped to zero. Another gentleman, I believe in South Texas ended up returning his, coz he was driving around in the heat windows down and left it on the seat on and came back and it was bricked by overheating. The sun is POWERFUL here in texas but that made him not trust it. So far so good for my use which is also photography....love being able to run it 100% electronic shutter with no penalty I've been able to visualize! Have the fan grip on order though and I think I'll test it with 8Kp30 to record a long form stage show just to see how it does, using HEVC 8K UHD long gop to keep bitrates lower. The only reason I could justify the upgrade/price was the "improved" video features making it more usable than the R5 mk I.

I own a Komodo-X. My particular niche is recording classical music concerts in often poorly lit churches where have no control over the lighting, where it would be nice to get the brilliantly let stained glass windows (but not essential). I can tell you that the K-X is significantly noisier at iso 4000 than the R5C, (Or lumix S series cameras). and I have no doubt that the canon C400 (having a 3rd base iso) would be better for my application than the K-x.

To be fair most full frame cameras overheat when shooting 4k 60p. This is a feature unique to Canon unless its a full frame camera with a 1:1 4k resolution sensor like the Sony A7S III. This is why all other full frame cameras have to crop to APSC mode when shooting 4k 60.
The R5 is a unique camera that pushes the limits of full frame technology. Full frame can barely manage 4k and yet Canon has made 8k work. For those that want that level of detail its there. For those that rarely want or shoot slow motion the tradeoff is there to prefer fine detail and better quality options for recording formats like raw. The R5 is a borderline cinema camera and some sacrifices have to be made for other types of video production to be better optimized for more narrative types of production.
Its important to use the best tools for the job. I own a R6 and a R5. Owned the R6 first and yes its a better 60p camera. Its a better videography camera which is why I keep it. I feel like I have the best of both worlds at my disposal now. Great 60p from the R6 when the type of project makes more sense to go that route. Great 8k raw using c-log2 for a lot of color flexibility later.
The R5 is not a bad camera at all and in fact the mk2 is an absolutely amazing video camera. It depends on the types of video each person shoots which is why we have the choices out there.
Fun tip but much like other full frame cameras that shoot 4k 60p at APSC crop the R5 can do the same and it eliminates overheating. Since the sensor is 8k a APSC crop is still 5.1k oversampled to 4k video. The R5 can over sample when cropped since the sensor is reading out a lot less pixels. So it manages 4k 60 over sampled from 5.1k and looks great. Its a APSC crop but its the clean 4k 60p I think many were hoping for.
Over sampling takes processing cycles and the 8k sensor is already a ton of pixels to read from the sensor. The R5C can handle it due to a much larger fan and colling system built into the camera.
I will say that outside of the 4k 60p aspect the R5 is superior to the R6 in almost every other possible way. I rarely shoot slow motion or 60p real life video anymore so its not as much of a concern for me. If I do have to shoot a long form type project I either use the R6 or use the R5 in crop mode.

@@papsny you are correct because it’s another full frame sensor like the A7S III that has just enough pixels for 4K video. No over sampling at all. That is also a trade off. Some may feel a 4K sensor should only have 4k resolution but even many cinema cameras now over sample to 5k, 6k or larger. Ironically one of the best cameras on the planet the Alexa was only really a 2.8k sensor so really is a 1:1 4k sensor all that bad?
I love my R5 but I also love my R6 and I personally so feel like 6k should be the limit of 4k sensors. I would like it if Canon made the R5 6k instead of 8k. I would like to see a 4k option as well like the FX3.
Sadly those are niche cameras that have almost zero appeal to photographers.

@@digitaldevigner4080 Nikon Z8 or Z6 III can do oversampled FF 4K 60 fps, Leica cameras have FF oversampled 4K 60 fps, Sony a9 III has oversampled 4K 60 fps, Fujifilm GFX 100 II - probably same thing.

I’m in the market for an R5II and I have an R5C so if you wanna trade let me know 🤣
I’ve always struggled to understand why 60fps is so popular anyway. Unless your output is 60fps, using it in a 24 timeline you have the wrong shutter angle and then for actual slow motion, I don’t know why you wouldn’t take the time to switch to 120. @suchetdas5392 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

It might not be the camera for someone with exclusive video needs such as yourself but it surely is a very capable video camera. Overheating is a problem that cameras in this price range and form factor are bound to have, there is simply no space in the design for the heat to dissipate, but the performance of the R5 II is very solid with very good video quality in terms of DR, rolling shutter and customisability. No brand has been able to create a hybrid camera which doesn't overheat in 4K 60p or higher frame rates at this price point. Yes the lack of oversampled 4K 60p is a surprising omission and Canon's insistence to stick to an archaic system for white balance evaluation is a bummer but overall this is a much better camera than most models in this price range. Btw, the oversampled 4K 30p never overheats unless you are shooting directly on a hot day in direct sunlight (even then you can record for more than an hour) and the 4K 60p goes on for over an hour, the 4k 120p can go for 19 mins and the cropped 4K 60p is oversampled and has a 80 min run time without any overheating. These are pretty good numbers in line with all other brands at this price point, and the addition of the fan significantly extends these run times by atleast 40 percent and in some cases more except the 4K 120p which receives a modest increase in run time (from 19 min to about 25 mins). I don't know where you got this information from but it sure as hell ain't correct. Gerald Undone has broken down the model very well, so have others. If it isn't the camera for you, it's okay but don't go around spreading inaccuracies.
