What do you cook the most in your camp ovens or Dutch ovens, roasts or wet dishes.

Do you cook your roast meals all in one oven or spread it over a couple of ovens

With your roast potatoes do you crack the lid open slightly to allow the steam to escape? I find I can’t get them to crisp up. I tend to use HeatBeads at home as easier, maybe I need more heat.

I’ve never cracked the lid. Just lots and lots of heat on top, I’m not a fan of heat beads and refuse to use them but one day I may have to surrender. Bagged Charcoal has good heat but I’ve never got the intense heat required form heat beads and sometimes wonder how anything gets cooked with them. The real reason that concerns me with beads though is somehow the smoke etc gets into the flavor of your cooking, it just does, it’s what’s special about camp oven cooking the flavors and those heat beads to me give off a smelly synthetic taste which I’m not keen on it infiltrating the food. I might be off with the fairies but that’s my way of thinking. Same with pork I don’t crack the lid but do remove the liquid at the end for final crisping. Sometimes my heat on top is so intense it burns the seasoning on the lid so I just reseason afterwards but that’s the type of heat required.

@@CookingwithHeavyMetal thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I have bagged charcoal which I use for my small spit so will give that a crack. Living in town doesn’t make it easier to just light up a fire whenever. After attending every demo Ranger Nick put on at the Boulia camel races in 2019 and using his ‘take 2 add 2’ method with heat beads, if you are unable have a fire, got me into camp oven cooking. I haven’t had any disasters using this method. However now I need to step it up to the next level. 😂. Thanks again. 👌👍

@@rogertrimper3093 yeah I understand some don’t have much option living in cities and no access to wood that beads is there only option unfortunately, reminds us how lucky we are to have access to wood still. Currently setting up for a camp oven competition on Saturday that we are helping organise and supplying wood is one of the big jobs a volunteer has taken care of for us.
