Wow! One landing tip that you mentioned in this video has transformed my accuracy. That is to, during approach, maintain a speed that's just above stall speed. This minimise the risk of over or under shooting the runway but have enough room to increase or decrease throttle if required.
Many thanks for putting this series together. I know it's several years old now but for anyone new to sim flying it really is very informative. I took the Cessna for s brief spin last night around London City Airport and did struggle with some of the basics so will try again tonight having watched this video. Using the trim is something I was not doing as much as it appears I need to rather than adjusting on the stick. I think my issues were mainly to do with getting used to my HOTUS One but also working out the button assignments was giving me a headache lol so that's certainly where I'll be concentrating next.
@ I took the Cessna 152 on this journey myself this evening and had a great deal of fun. Changed the sensitivity settings in my HOTUS and found it much better as a result. Not anywhere near as smooth as your flight but once I learnt not to be too impatient with the trim controls I was going along quite nicely. I did take a bit of a detour though visiting a couple of stadiums and getting a bit lost lol But it was all good practice. I’ll take the direct route tomorrow to see how much I can improve.
Two more efforts tonight, one in the 152 and then the 172 for the first time. Much better and both ended with pretty smooth landing too. I’m still not quite there on the trimming, I’m a bit too unsure still on how much the dabbing is affecting the aircraft so tend to overdo/underdo it but it’s getting there. Most importantly I’m having a lot of fun.

Great video, flew a 152 back in 81 and thought I remembered it but I had forgotten the finer points. Back to practice for me. Thanks for your helpful videos.
Thank you for a great video, I have just purchased MSFS on the PC and loving it , but much more difficult than I imagined. I have completed the basic training and the 2nd level, can't remember what that was called now , brain overload lol.....my 1st attempt was with just the keyboard and mouse and found it impossible so got hold of an X Box controller and so much better.
Thanks for another great video! I will definitely be watching out for more... like I have said in previous comments I am new to Flight Simming, having started back in April. I have Learned a lot from your tutorials and I just wanted and wanted to say Thanks again for the time you have spent helping myself and others to try to get a handle on this.
Really helpful, thanks. Using Tflight, HOTAS one the trim isn’t too bad but real problems with mixture! I thought ‘best mixture’ would solve but kills the engine!
When you were trimming airplane, what was your AOA. Was it orange over green or green over green. Also what was you trim, what percentage of AOA and trim?
I did some testflights on XBox after the update and it seems the elevator trim issue is fixed. One button push does now change just a little bit, compared to a full % earlier. Manual trimming is now very well possible on XBox.
Have you noticed there are two ways of setting the weather? One is in the main menu and the other is the in game. I found it when I was trying to set a calm day ie Calm conditions No Wind No Cloud just to check out why the aircraft a Cessna 152 was still rocking and rolling in supposedly calm weather. I had set calm conditions in the main screen but the in game settings were still set as default, after making sure both matched each other I got the weather I wanted. Thought you might like to know this twin choice we seem to have?
Thanks as always for your awesome videos. Just out of interest since the Hotas is still not available in SA, how would you rate the Logitech Vs the Hotas. Most of my MSFS time is spent in the lounge and not at a desk if you can bear that in mind too please. Also spend most of my time in the Cessna 152 and 172 if you feel one of the flight sticks is more suitable to the Cessna. Thanks again
Hi, I prefer using my yoke system when flying aircraft that have an actual yoke in them (like the Cessnas etc); but I love using my Hotas One with my Series S - it adds a lot of immersion, over using the gamepad and it feels fluid and accurate when in flight. If you're sat back on a coach like me in your lounge, then the Hotas is the better choice, as yokes really need to be mounted to a desk or similar.
Really informative video. It really helped me, but on the issue of trimming I am still seeing that my vertical speed is never zero. I am always oscillating between -200 to +200, although gently. Can this be considered ‘level flight’ for practical purposes? Thanks again!
Let's try this again. I changed my account and had to unsubscribe from the old one (lfisher441) and resubscribe on the new one, what a hassle. Got a new plane (FreedomFox) which is great. Dusted off the ThrustMaster which is so much better with this plane and had to look up your video on changing the hat buttons for freelook in cockpit and exterior. Getting better and better flying. As you say practice, practice, practice.
That's fantastic. Apologies for the late reply to your message - for some reason it put it in my 'Held for Review' section on TH-cam. Shouldn't happen again now ;)
Really nice video! I always have trouble trimming out the plane correctly when using trim controls (i use one of the buttons on mh Honeycomb Alpha Yoke) For some reason i can't get the right setting.
@@Huddison Yes :) I find it difficult how much 'clicks' i need. It seems first i don't trim down enough ( i keep climbing) so i 'click' once more but then i am descending too much again.
It takes a while to learn, but get used to 'dabbing' the trim, like I showed in this video - perhaps I can do another video that shows this in a more definitive action.
Thanks for this back to basics tutorial. I have a lot of trouble trimming,so I will practice. The external view in the is aircraft gives a numerical indication of our trimming, is that accurate? I like to see how the numbers change with my inputs for trimming but half of the time they don’t change …
Hi, in regards to trimming, I would advice that you concentrate on the Vertical speed marker/tab in the cockpit. If you're climbing or descending, if you look closely enough, it will display numbers informing you of your climb/decent vertical speed.
The figure in external view shows the percentage. One dab doesn’t make one percent. I think it only does 0,1 or 0,2 percent per dab, at least after the update. Before that it did do 1 percent per dab, which was way to much to be able to trim. That is why you don’t see it changing that much now.
@Huddison with this video you addressed exactly what I was looking for. As a Newbie on Flight Sim 2020 I am still tweaking my setup. I am on a Xbox Series S with a Thrustmaster Hoyas One. While I saw in one of your other videos that you use buttons for Trim I am still on the default settings here. Having really issues with this to keep my plane balanced I wonder if using buttons instead of the Axis makes the difference. What would your recommendation be?
@@Huddison thanks for the reply. This rally sound logical to me. So I tried Trim with buttons, but I think I still don't get the trick. Used the same flight route as in your video, but with real weather on. For me it was like push button once for nose up - nothing happened - push button twice - nothing happen - push button a third time - plane start climbing rapidly. Push button nose down once - plane start to sink even more than climbing before. When I had it balanced for a few seconds and had my hands of the controller it started sinking again extreme. To sum it up for me Trim is a stressful process and not nearly as relaxed as in your video. Hopefully this is caused by the weather conditions.
Did you upgrade the sim? In the latest version on my XBox S it is much easier to trim. They decreased the effect of a single dab on elevator trim to about 0.1 %. Before the update the increments were 1% for each dab.

First I’m a newbie with flight sim. But trim on the sim l do not like l was always taught “PAT” to climb or descend Power, Attitude, Trim and never to fly the aircraft with the trim control. I hate the sim yokes that are spring loaded as you cannot feel the aircraft. Personally l feel the sim is harder than the real thing. On the real thing you relieve the load on the yoke after you set the attitude you required which takes just a few seconds. I use the Honeycomb yoke and throttle units (I read they are in financial trouble now) and do not like the yoke for the reasons l mentioned. Does anyone have one of the expensive yoke’s that are supposed to be force feedback?
Hi the problem is with the trim wheel on the Xbox x with mouse and Hotas one when you move the wheel up or down any number clicks the wheel returns back to where it started from does not matter how far you move it. i fly mainly with Cessna 152
Make sure you have AI auto trim turned off... This feature constantly attempts to override trim and resets it back towards 0... no helpful at all. You can do this from the appropriate settings menu, or from the assists panel in flight.
Some people have rudder issues. Check through your 'Assistance options' though - they all reset to easy (pretty much all turned on) after the last update.
You didn't state if you are using a controller or the keyboard for rudder control. I found it impossible to control the rudder with the keyboard and upgraded my flight setup with a set of pedals and that made ground maneuvering that much better. A flight joystick that twists will work as well.
I am using a joystick with a rocker for the rudder. I will look through the assistance options to see if this helps. At the moment the plane careens of the runway to the right no matter what I do. Aaaargh.
@@peterjohnson350 I wonder if that rocker is being interpreted as a switch instead of an axis control? A switch would be as difficult as using the keyboard for rudder control. I fist started playing with desk top Simulators in 1983. I learned to fly real airplanes when I was in high school.
You have a great deal of knowledge about the FS2020 sim and it is very nice that you have taken the time to produce your videos.
@@TheFalconJetDriver Thanks that appreciated & in a recent Members Only video I released, I talked about me using the correct terminology during my videos - so you do indeed make a good point ;)
@@Huddison Thank you, Sir.
